Recommended to hardcore Tolkien fans or to younger players after a fun adventure. That said, the game has a long way to go to take on "Link" in battle.
-
Younger gamers are sure to be drawn into the story and the fluent gameplay, which rarely offers any particular brainstorming. Also, its a fair assumption that Tolkien fans and average gamers might find something in it as well.
-
Though the Hobbit does decent job in recreating the events of J.R. Tolkein's famous book of the same name, simplistic objectives and an overall easy quest hurt an otherwise average game.
-
A fine place to start for younger gamers. In that respect, the puzzles, side quests and overall presentation are just about right.
-
PC GamerIt continually sidetracks you with diversions that aren't in the book, when all you really want to do is get to the good stuff that Tolkien crafted. [Feb 2004, p.76]
-
An epic story turned into an average platform game.
-
Tolkien fans may enjoy the game's presentation of Middle-earth lore, but The Hobbit tends to rely too heavily on derivative, uninspired gameplay for it to stand up on its own.
-
An ordinary platformer that struggles with expectations.
-
Its look and feel is too juvenile for adults, and some of its challenges are too difficult and frustrating for kids. Even rabid Tolkien fans won't care for the game, thanks to its translation of the classic novel into a lightweight, cartoonish platformer.
-
In short, it's your typical platformer -- with all the good and bad connotations that term holds...It's just not very engaging, no matter how familiar you are with the source material.
-
Adult gamers will find it too basic, children may find it too frustrating, and fans of lord of the Rings will prefer a more authentic Tolkien experience. [Feb 2004, p.73]
-
If you play only one game set in Middle-earth this year, don't make it this one.
