This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bad. I adore games like The Stanley Parable and The Beginners Guide, or Undertale and Doki Doki Literature club--all kinds of games about games. Those games are full of wit and charm and passion and life. Despite being inherently and pointedly artificial, the games I mentioned are more genuine than almost any other game on an emotional level.

This isn't. Meta things happen. You switch between playing different styles of games as one of six characters, and there's an overarching metanarrative that is interwoven into gameplay, but that's where the comparisons end. You the time you spend playing each game is upwards of a half an hour at a time, and it's spent playing the worst version of any one of a given genre of game, like an RPG or a top-down shooter, only being paid off by a few seconds of metacommentary or little bits and pieces of the story--sometimes in the middle of the gameplay, usually at the end.

Games like this need to be short and punchy and say things worth hearing, and the game isn't any of that.

Even the story only comes to anything in the end, but it doesn't much feel like tying together a bunch of individual parts as much as it's just a straightforward reveal. It's bizarre and fun and the clear highlight of the game. It reminds me of what sort of game this may have been if it was more focused on the sense of mystery, because the climax was everything I could have hoped for.

Ending was a mite bit weak, though it's less about that and more about the ride getting to it. But that's... maybe 20 minutes out of 4 hours of playtime, which weren't worth it at all.

It's way worse than Pony Island and Inscription, solely because some quite lengthy chunks of this game are... boring, which is unacceptable in this "meta-breaking-fourth-wall" genre.

It’s six hours of a diversified gameplay with loads of secrets and good music in the background. And the finale is so delightful I wanted to clap during the credits. [13/2018, p.72]

The Hex is a brilliant game that mixes six different genres: it is a shooter, a walking simulator, a fighting game, a classic JRPG, a platform, a tactical RPG and a surreal game that you have to play.
