The Fall is a great story, well told, and it's thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish.

An absolute must-buy for fans of Philip K. Dick and Arthur Clarke, The Fall is a prime example of a perfect storm of a game. Coming out of left field with zero hype, it banks on rock solid game mechanics and incredible art direction/voice overs, to carry a poignant story that will stay with players long after the end credits have rolled.

The Fall is one of the best science fiction games around. This first episode talks about artificial intelligence and difficult choices. Its mix of action and puzzle solving moves the intriguing narrative, which is sustained by beautiful writing and unique atmosphere.

My new favorite proof that you can create a cinematic experience without millions of dollars and photorealistic visuals. [10/2014, p.67]

A nice robo-drama that doesn't need to complicate things. The Fall is clever, albeit a little bit inhuman. [Issue#244]

A bit more text would have been nice, as the possibility to maybe study some archives and extract more about the backstory of the game universe would have made the wait for the next installments much more justifiable and pleasant.

The Fall is a short but excellent first chapter of a planned trilogy. Even as it neatly wraps up its own story, it leaves enough questions unanswered (and raises some new ones) to create anticipation for the follow-up.

Beginning as a universally relatable fantasy about overcoming red tape, The Fall winds up as a game about identity and civil rights without ever talking too much or treading too clumsily.

Over the Moon have begun something very special with The Fall and you’ll be looking out for ARID again even months after you finish this intriguing opening act.

The game is a thoroughly atmospheric side scrolling action adventure game. The action feels a touch too limited and a touch too clumsy and the adventuring is rather basic. The negatives are almost offset by a very engaging storyline. I'm looking forward to seeing how the story develops, but in order for this to become a cult classic the gameplay could use some additional development. [Sept 2014]

The game is a throwback to the old-style point-and-click adventure game, requiring you to solve puzzles with limited assets within a constantly shifting scaffold of constraints that limits what is and is not possible. For the most part, the game avoids the exasperating opacity that once plagued adventure games—flush the pickle down the toilet in order to get the car keys—but there is nevertheless little room for variation in how one solves the puzzles, and little room for choice within the story.

While mechanically this action-adventure is mediocre, it shines with its story approach and its characters.

First act of an announced trilogy, The Fall has an impressive story and a compelling setting. Its gameplay is not as brilliant, but there's space for improvements.

Despite the initial plan to cut The Fall into several episodes, Over the Moon decided not to tease us with a cliffhanger – it’s a self-contained, albeit short, story.

A clever and sound sci-fi story in one adventurous package. It may torture your brain as well as your patience. After an intense opening its tempo is decreased, however, by the time you reach its excellent finale it will increase.

In short, fix these problems Over The Moon and maybe the second episode of The Fall will be all fun and not just the last hour.

Shortly after the story began to unfold, I felt that I was getting a window into a much larger, intriguing world; complete, very real and deeply dark. The dialogue and voice acting created characters that I became so emotionally invested in that I have thought of them for days since, wondering about their histories and motivations. The puzzles, for me, were a reason to further explore the depths of this bizarre world. As a filmmaker, this game left more of a mark than many films I have watched. There was a haunting beauty about this world, and I laughed out loud many times, thoroughly enjoying the wit of characters, and morbid absurdity of certain tasks throughout the game. I was left feeling so invested that I am eager to experience the next installment. This is a brilliant game. Full Review »

Metroid meets Limbo meets Monkey Island with a twist. I started this game expecting a dark and gritty metroidvania but I found myselfMetroid meets Limbo meets Monkey Island with a twist. I started this game expecting a dark and gritty metroidvania but I found myself pleasantly surprised that it wasn't the combat mechanics (which btw are very simplistic, but capable enough as it is not this game focus) that kept me playing, it was the story.
I don't want to spoil much, but while you basically control a robot away from any conscious human being for , there is a lot of character development in a short period of time (which is even weirder if you consider the main premise of this game is very similar to "Metroid Other M").
Enviromentally, this game is beautifully weird: I found it a lot less scary than Limbo, but at the same time its a lot more unpleasant and realistic without being too graphic.
Now, the puzzle solving is represents this game partial strength but also its main weakness: the puzzles are little and pretty straightforward by themselves, but then you're bombarded with too many of them at the same time, it can become a heavy to follow, even more if you consider that there's no place for experimentation (no combination-in-menu mechanic, no more comments than "i cannot do that" at random uses), you can't really fail any of them and the first playthrough could take you hours to complete just because of this, also crippling part of its replay value.
But don't be fooled, it's very unlikely to get all this game narrative has to offer the first time, and if you're a completionist you will be repeating it just to check the different conversation outcomes.
In the end, this game is an excellent example of story-driven exploration gameplay, but not as fast-paced as many people would expect.

TL;DR version: Exploration-platformer fans: don't expect a fully developed Metroidvania (at least not in this first chapter, maybe for the next one). Point-n-click adventure fans: give it a try, you might like it. Indie enthusiast: this definitely worth a $10 price!

If you like sci-fi and old-school point'n'click adventureAn intelligent, thinking person's game with great atmosphere and sense of humour. If you like sci-fi and old-school point'n'click adventure games, you're sure to love this. These days, I get quite jaded with games and often stop playing them after an hour or so, but I couldn't stop playing The Fall - it captivated me right up until the brilliant ending.

It took me 5 hours to complete (going very slowly!) and I loved every second of it. I only got stuck on the puzzles once, but a quick look online gave me a hint on how to proceed. There are only a few characters in this game, but they are written amazingly well.

The combat is OK, it's not brilliant and it doesn't really add much to the game. But I did like the game mechanic of switching between flashlight and gun.

I thoroughly enjoyed this game and cannot wait for the 2nd and 3rd installments in the trilogy.
