I think this remaster is pretty good personally. I know that's not low end but still...There are more powerful CPU's out there and certainly more powerful graphics cards on the market so...yeah.

Anyway back to the game! I haven't noticed any game play alterations so far, it seems to me to be a game that has been ported to Fallout 4's game engine with touched up graphics. Primarily the shadows spring to mind; the shadows on the original Skyrim where frankly shockingly bad with the hour cycle. It left a lot to be desired that's for sure. I have also heard from a good friend of mine who put's a lot of mods into his games where and when he can that the new Skyrim is more stable with mods for him at least.

Lastly, I just want to say if your expecting this to be Elder Scrolls 6, then may I suggest you look up the definition of "Remaster" in a dictionary. Thanks for reading and happy gaming everyone!

It seems to me a lot of players don't understand what "remastered" means. I didn't expect a new game, or add ons', or new quests. I expected just what I got. PC mods took care of ALL of the visual improvements years ago and a huge down side to the SE is the mod community has to transfer EVERYTHING over. Which takes a lot of time and some stuff isnt going to make it over at all. You cant use base skyrim mods with SE so it all has to be redone. You know, as of right now I wouldn't even bother with the SE but in the future when all the mods are out, you may want to swap over. Everything I have just said however is conditional on if you have received the game for FREE. You get this game for free if you has Skyrim and all the DLC but if you are even missing ONE DLC, you have to pay full price for the SE. Expand

Still I feel it is so shady to charge the console guys 60$ 60! it should have been 9.99$ or 19.99$ for a chance for people who never played to get into a great rpg and have some fun. And leave skryim and the elder scrolls on a good note. not on a money grabbing note. they can make billions off us, but they dont want to make a 5 year old game more accessible? I think its pretty messed up. Anyways if its free for you i encourage you to download it and run around it doesnt take much time, and you might enjoy getting back into it. It only makes me excited for what they will do for the next elder scrolls game, which is by far my most anticipated game of all time. and stop comparing it to the witcher 3, obviosly thats better, and when elder scrolls 6 comes they will say its the greatest of all time yada yada, they are all great just play them when they are out have the best time ever and be happy, lol only a few real strong rpg's around. and be glad the genre is so popular and huge now. "Remaster" leaves bugs from the original release as they were in the original and makes textures blurry. Sorry Todd, but your money is in another castle.

My "original" version with a few basic mods (which I still play from time to time) looks better and runs smoother than the Special Edition. I see no reason why this should be sold as a full-priced game. Fortunately I got it for free as I owned the Legendary Edition, but still utterly disappointed to be honest.

This is a terrible, shameless cash grab. The same bugs are there. The map is still so bad you can't click on Fort Dawnguard if you're in the northwest. It looks exactly the same, if not worse.

Why not work on the next Elder Scrolls instead of pushing it back to 2019?

I think Bethesda has done great work with this Edition of Skyrim. The 64-bit version makes it more stable in my opinion. And I can not forget to say that the viewdistance is a big improvement.

The "better stability" that should come with 64 bit does not exist.

There is no reason the game should run poorly, either, when the graphical differences between the new game and the original are hardly there. Turn off the god rays and you won't be able to tell a difference. The only thing they changed was lighting and adding god rays everywhere, for the most part. I have everything set to max and the game still doesn't look as good as pre-release gameplay.

Finally, since there is a current lack of a script extender you won't be able to use a lot of the best mods from the original, so the experience won't be as good as it is when modding the original either. But even when the script extender comes out, the game will never be worth paying for because it's an overall terrible remaster that adds nothing new and hardly has a new coat of paint with the graphics.

It's fine if you got it for free, but never buy it.

The plethora of mods available for the PC *a couple of years ago* trounces everything this version has to offer.

Unless you're a PS4 or Xbone first time buyer this is a waste of (too much) money.

5 years ago Skyrim was a decent though flawed title, it is now well past it's prime and Bethesda really should be focusing on the next iteration of TOS than 'remastering' (not really) this title.

One of the biggest gripes i see is that it's a blatant cashgrab, Bethesda charging 2016 for a 2011 game but....... we all knew it was coming, i bought legendary in 2014 for £6.
This edition is the same game, so yes i do agree that in this circumstance the value is questionable.

Member when Skyrim was something we talked about ?

It's always been a good game and it has that thing, you know when you go round to a friends and they are a different race and use dodgy weps and sneak round and like you're 'nub' and they're like educating you in thievery whilst stealing sht and you're ready to batter them round the head with a stables sign for the upset they're causing in the world and there is a minute albiet a brief moment, that you think when you go home and play his/her interactions will be visible in your world.(I take Risperidone btw)

Synopsis: It's Skyrim, so it's good but if you haven't played it ever it's hard to justify the cost. The Mods for the hd textures and other stuff are more to my liking than the remaster so i'm quite happy to have the remaster in my steam account and it will probably never see the light of day

No real improvement in graphics. The Hi res official patch from Bethesda for vanilla Skyrim is probably about the level this achieves.

Godrays and HDR used all over the place like the designer was on a trip when deciding where to put them. Glaring off walls and buildings in a blinding bright light that obscures the textures - Which is just as well as they are barely better than vanilla.

Glaring off walls and buildings in a blinding bright light that obscures the textures - Which is just as well as they are barely better than vanilla. Simple fixes like allowing for modern PC monitor sizes above 1920x1080 (who buys monitors with a res that low any more these days?)

Yes,you can fix the in game mostly with an ini file change, however the menus remain largely unusable with elements unreachable off the top and bottom of them. Shocking that a remaster doesn't fix simple things like accommodating modern monitor sizes.

Expecting PC users to still be using the poorly named "Full HD" which now looks like watching a block puzzle rather than playing a game like Skyrim.

Perhaps 64 bit mod support (Will modders bother to repeat their work on such an old game?) and DX11's box of tricks might help a little in the coming months, but for now, if you own original Skyrim and even just the official HD patch - this isn't worth it in any way shape or form.

If you are running SKY UI and other mods on your original then stepping back to play this will be a disappointment.

My advice is, until or unless the modders fix this - steer well clear. It's just about worth its price of free so I give it a 5.

I don't feel entitled to more BTW -It's free so no issue in terms of value proposition.
I just think this is such a wasted opportunity - such a lazy conversion it deserves no more than average.

Shovelware - even free shovelware - is still shovelware and a score above average simple isn't deserved.

Frankly, there is little point in upgrading, as you can get better graphics from self installed mods.

Frankly, there is little point in upgrading, as you can get better graphics from self installed mods.

Is the game going to be more stable when modded? Well, not if my experience with the incredibly buggy, 64 bit crashfest called Fallout 4 is anything to go by and after years of being lied to by gaming companies, I'm not going to take anybody else's word for it.

But the main reason that this game gets a five is that they Devs have removed achievements if you wish to mod your game even slightly. Yes, you can mod achievements back in, but given that modding has been an integral part of the whole Elder Scrolls experience since I started playing the series with Morrowind back in 2002, it is highly insulting to the gaming public to remove achievements just because you've installed even a single mod.

Like many modders, I mod my game to make it far more difficult, or complex than the vanilla version and achievements make a good way of tracking progress that you've made towards different goals and provide a good point of focus for gameplay in a sandbox game. Needless to say, mods like the unofficial patches are essential in order to fix the numerous bugs that Bethesda always ships along with their games and are then too lazy to bother fixing.

Frankly, it demonstrates a complete lack of respect when developers think that its cool to give the middle finger to their highly motivated and amazing modding community in this way and it certainly doesn't make me want to play their "special edition" any longer than it took to realise that it does far less than my existing graphics mods already do.

Of course, another reason this gets a five is that Bethesda seem to have made no attempt whatsoever to fix the literally thousands of bugs and glitches that are still present and unpatched in the original Skyrim. Who gives a toss about graphics if they've been too lazy to fix basic errors that modders have known about and rectified years ago?

The quality of the remaster is so-so. Not bad, not amazing. Some rework to lighting effects, 64 bit capability and so on, but there's still low res textures that reminds you it is essentially a game from 2011.

But really, what is here is still absolutely wonderful. The kicker for me at these low scores from people moaning about it not being different enough from the original... that must mean you have the original. Meaning you got this game free probably. So what is your problem?

For newcomers to the game, you have a brand new version with more contemporary graphics to enjoy, whereas old players have the same thing to enjoy for nothing. Seriously, shut up and stop moaning.

The game is largely bug free (as bug free as Skyrim was anyway), but I have run into one crash in my playtime thus far, and the logo at the start of the game goes mad around the screen for a second, but that might just be my PC. There does seem to be an issue with the sound in terms of NPC speech, but I can't figure out what it is - they all just seem a bit subdued, but it's not very noticeable and certainly doesn't take much away from the game. Yes, no mods yet really, but they'll come, and they have an expanded architecture to build them on.

Sometimes, things are just hated upon purely because it is popular. The score right now is 5.7 for this game. That is a ridiculous score and should be thoroughly ignored as the net result of a bunch of bed wetters who don't know what the hell they're complaining about.

If you missed this in 2011, enjoy one of the finest RPGs ever made. I would also recommend taking a look at Oblivion and Morrowind - two others games in the series - which are just as excellent and, in different ways, even better.

You got this kind of thing 3 months after the original release on a PC. This is a shameful money grab, for an engine which is a decade old. Bethesda has lost some of my respect. A Reskin, with the original HDTextures..... And some new shaders.... Not even given as a "free patch" for PC users. AVOID

    - has lower res textures than original with the free HD DLC installed
    - uses compressed audio for *all* audio assets, while original had uncompressed audio for sound effects (but not music or voice)
    - decaps framerate by default so until you cap it at 60fps, anytime you exceed you'll get physics wackiness (compared to original which was capped at 60 by default, and they could've fixed

1 point because it was free.

While I can't give this a 0 because it still is Skyrim, this is a huge disappointment. I understand releasing it for ps4 and xbone, but what they released on PC is barely better looking than vanilla pc skyrim. Just a few mods and the original already looks better than this "special" edition. They did nothing to change or improve any other aspect of the game, including bug fixes. The original version with graphics mods installed still looks better, so it's not worth the upgrade. [Christmas 2016, p.73]

Purely graphical upgrade with support of the Gen4 console modes that PC owners of the original game and all expansions get for free. [Issue #269]

Skyrim is still a great place to get lost in and the visual upgrade is welcome. It perhaps doesn’t go as far as it should and it’s a shame no other aspect of the game got looked at but it’s still well worth your time.
