Some of the 'reviews', which are more subjective and unqualified opinions are not really suitable for a site like this. People turn towards these kind of sites to be able to get an idea about the game. Sad to see, that it is not really doable.

Some people are trying to compare a MMO set in the Elder Scrolls lore with a stand-alone console / PC version, which has a different depth and a different aim in general. People are trying to compare apples with pears here and it simply doesn't work.

Nowadays many expect to have a free game, the graphics quality of the CryEngine 3 (so should like Crysis for example) etcpp. It simply is technically not feasible, so it would be good to gather information and understand first, before commenting like this on review pages. Further, people tend to forget the other MMOs out there and how they started out. Gazillion of bugs, technical issues, like lag, server crashes, packet losses and so forth.

The game is actually fun. Of course it has its flaws as any other game too, but in regards to the big picture it does do a lot right. And I am not the biggest MMO player anymore. I quit more or less years ago. The game will receive its updates and improvements and will eventually grow over time.

Sometimes I don't understand what people expect, when they say "it is nothing new" - well no, it is an MMO and there isn't much innovation that can be done in the first place --- look at the big screen or books --> same story there. The plot of many movies have existed for decades. They are visually pimped, have different actors and people like them, although there is not that much new to expect there as well.
And for the costs? Paying a few bucks per month is no big deal to be honest. You simply can't neglect the running costs here - infrastructure, people, etc. It would be like going to Burger King and asking for free food. And a visit to the cinema already costs more nowadays. You can play 24/7/365 - that is more than you get for that money in many other fields.

One thing for people who like to dismantle everything - it is easy to criticise something, but hardly anyone wirtes improvement points or suggestions. How would you make it better?
Example: Someone cooks for you - you eat the food - you say: tastes like crap" ---> is that really valuabale information? I believe not! Something like:"you could have used these spices" or "cooked this a little longer" etc. is definitely more useful.

Like that it is more like someone just complaining without having the knowledge to do so.

    My 5 cent.

PS: No, I am not a fanboy, but I gave the rating due to so many unqualified '0's here.

Character customization is nearly infinite. The skill trees are seem linear but offer enough depth to truly be the type of player you want to be, a tank sorcerer, etc. While there is plenty to do in groups with friends in ESO, sometimes it seems if the quests want to separate parties into unique instances which is my only gripe currently with the PvE experience. Public Dungeons don't seem to have this problem but sometimes overcrowding can be the problem then.

All in All, a great game and a nearly flawless launch compared to other recent online game launches.

Disclaimer: I played all of the open beta weekends and I am basing my score of 2 out of 10 on it. You may say, "hey that isn't fair to criticize a game based upon a beta build!" Normally you'd be correct, but since the last build was from 2 weeks before launch and it was just that terrible, there's no way i'd waste $60 on it much less the sub fee.

Normally you'd be correct, but since the last build was from 2 weeks before launch and it was just that terrible, there's no way i'd waste $60 on it much less the sub fee.

The game had a terrible amount of bugs. I had 15 quests in my questlog when I quit playing during the last free weekend because I couldn't complete them because they were either bugged or so high level there was no way for me to complete it. The graphics are ok, although it was more colorful than Skyrim. But the game is broken up into hub areas, so you can't explore the entire map the way you could in Skyrim. The loot drops are terrible. You can only get anything of worth as a quest reward. Literally every monster drop 1 or 2 gold coins and that was it.

This game also suffers from some of the drawbacks in other elder scrolls games as well as in MMOs in general where NPCs aren't really NPCs they're just there to tell you to go somewhere for a quest or stand around all day waiting for you to buy something. This is something that I've grown tired of video games. The leveling system is basically, "here's another attribute point. here's another skill point. Now you have a level 4 skill!" This game has a much more generic RPG leveling system than what you would be used to in previous Elder Scrolls game.

What this game amounts to is an extremely generic RPG set in an Elder Scrolls themepark. I can't come up with any reason why someone would pay a sub fee for this game unless you like flushing money down the toilet. Is it even worth $60? I'd say no, but if you're a hardcore Elder Scrolls fan then maybe it's worth paying $60 and trying it for a month. Like I said, I quit playing it when it was free for me to play because I found it so bad. So I think that says it all. If this game at launch was totally free, I'd still rather play other F2P games like Path of Exile that I think are more enjoyable and of better quality than this game.

It means the world around you changes based on your decisions and stays that way, it feels great to save a village from a bunch of bandits and every time you go through its saved full of happy people thanking you for job well done. This also means you are given decisions that have huge impact on the world around you and they are not black or white either they are mostly gray vs gray and you have to think for a minute or two which is the one you really want. Do you want to save the souls of the past villagers or do you want to clear the place from hoards of undead making it safe for resettling? Exploration is heavily rewarded, you can find quests everywhere, you can search for collectibles or for lost treasure using a treasure map you've just found on a bandit. Several quests are even based around exploration not giving you any markers making you think and solve puzzles.

The combat is fun and satisfying, you have 2 sets of 6 abilities (based on weapons and class) you can freely switch between plus light and heavy attack with blocking and rolling. Its fairly dynamic and just standing around even if you are a support is not the best option by far. The way you acquire your abilities is just like any other ES game - the more you use particular ability, the faster it grows in power and the faster you can morph it giving it some awesome side effect or completely changing it which you have to choose from two options. And sometimes, just like the quests, its fairly tough to decide.

Classes seem clearly cut just like in most MMOs, you have a Sorcerer (mage), Nightblade (rogue), Dragonknight (warrior) and a Templar (paladin), but they are NOT. All of them can use all of the weapons and all of the armor both of which have their own skill trees. You can build a battlemage (battlesorcerer?) with a heavy sword and heavy armor for example, not all builds are viable but all of them are possible and you can make them work. And thanks to the huge number of available skill points not just from leveling but mostly from exploration, you can try a lot of crazy builds without gimping the character forever or without the need for constant respecing (which is available as well).

I have yet to get into PVP but many claim its the best one in a long time, the potential is huge and the possible battles of hundreds of people in 3-way RvR sound great.

All in all this is a fantastic game and after playing dozens of MMOs it feels so fresh and its so worth it. The questing and exploration alone will keep you around for months and I have only explored a fraction of one of the 4 huge worlds you can explore. There is so much content in the game it boggles the mind and none of it feels generic, every quest, every part of the map fits in the world and expands the lore of it. It is a worthy Elder Scrolls game and if you liked the Skyrim, Oblivion or Morrowind, you will love ESO as well.

Very few people even know just how massive this game is, certainly not the haters, they just pretend to know so they can give it ridiculously undeserved low scores because for some reason the game just pisses them off. Let me put it this way, if you played Oblivion, you know the land of Cyrodiil quite well, this game has the entire province of Cyrodiil from Oblivion, it's the same size, and the entire map is a PvP playground. When I first learned that, my jaw hit the floor, and when I finally experienced it in-game myself, my jaw hit the first story floor of my house. The PvP in this game is unmatched, and that's just one aspect of what this game has to offer. You can build a character however you want, wear whatever armor you want, and use whatever weapon you want. For some reason you want to be a rogue-type class(Nightblade) that wears heavy armor and wields a massive two-handed battleaxe? No problem, you have that option, and that just popped in my head, it may not make sense but who cares, that's why ESO rules. Then there is the crafting, you don't have to train to get them and aren't limited to only a few crafts, you can master them all at once, and you can immediately go out and gather any materials you find and begin experimenting with them to create instantly useful items. ESO's combat is just awesome, it uses what is called reticle-targeting action combat meaning you can miss your enemies if you don't have the reticle aimed on them, and everyone can dodge, block, interrupt, and sneak. The main story and other quests have been very clever and entertaining as well, even the low level ones. I could go on forever, there's so much this game has to offer, it's just ridiculous. If you love this genre and pass on The Elder Scrolls Online, you just robbed yourself. IGNORE THE HATERS! Expand

    Objective Review:
It is not terrible, but it is not great either. If you are looking for a game that will provide an amazing experience - this is not it. If you are looking to kill time, then this might do the trick.

I would never give this a 10. I have no idea how some have. I also would not give this a zero - it is not that bad. 5 out of 10 is more reasonable, but

Think about this for a moment. When have you ever seen a game this big have so few reviews close to release date? Usually a handful of early reviews will slip through the cracks maybe 48 hours or so before the game's official review embargo (when we are allowed to post reviews) has passed. So why is it that a game that hundreds of reviewers of major online and print publications have only come up with 8 reviews worldwide amongst them?

Having played the game I will tell you why. Bethesda is offering some kind of incentive to either delay or "re-review" ESO. See the developers are sent copies of the review before it releases with big games like this. There was a guy who worked for Gamespot who got FIRED for giving a bad review to Kane and Lynch Dead Men a good 6 years or so ago.

Anyone who has reviewed this game under a certain score is getting some kind of incentive to either delay their review or "rework it", and that is a despicable practice that Bethesda has engaged in for as long as I can remember.

The actual review? This game isn't amazing, and it isn't horrible, The character customization is amazing it truly is endless with the options of what you want to create, the graphics are incredibly bad for a next gen title I mean painfully awfully bad. Which they justify as saying this is because the world is so large. Really? What about Aion? What about Final Fantasy XIV: A realm reborn? What about Destiny. The game isn't horrible, and it isn't amazing but these deliberately withheld reviews make me sick to my stomach.

The game is an excellent MMORPG. It has all the features and easy control. But comparing it to an Elder Scrolls game, it sucks. The two elements don't mix well. Also, the business model is very bad. 60 dollars plus, 15 dollars per month. Nope. Not good.

I love the compass, action bar and attribute bars. The HUD UI is great and it fades away when not in use to give you a more immersive feel to the game. You can play in both Third and First person. So anyone will be able to play the way they would like.

    PVP - 10/10 (AMAZING)

PVE - 8/10 (Can get repetitive but thats only if you speed through it all and don't follow along with the story.)

Dungeons - (Bosses really challenge you, and make you figure out how to defeat them.)

    Play this game if:

You like to play with other an dare willing to join a decent guild.
You like to take everything one at a time and actually pay attention to what is happening.
If you enjoy large scale PvP.
Like to use quality game crafting systems.
    Love the Elder Scrolls
    Love MMO's

    Don't play this game if:

You don't like earning everything you get and have to work for it
You don't want to deal with player based economy because believe me everything is player based.
You don't like other people or playing in guilds.

This is a short review int he coming months I will have more things to talk about with further patches. Give the game a try, you have to pay it 60 bucks for the game but at least the first 30 days are free and that will give you a feel of the game. Do not judge it based on questing from 1-10 actually do everything you can to get a full feel for the game

All interiors look the same, even when you get to a new quest zone (which will take you about 24 hours of /played per zone). Dungeon layouts are always the same, house layouts are always the same, there are only two or three tilesets throughout the game. Giving you flashbacks of Dragon Age 2 yet?

Quests are boring, they try really hard to keep it interesting with the fully-voiced quest dialogue, but that doesn't remove the problem of going into the same layouts with the same tilesets over and over and over again.

Group dungeons are abysmal, as the "Holy Trinity" mechanic (tank/dps/healer) has pretty much no depth. There aren't aggro tables, tanks can't hold aggro on anything, which means they're pretty much useless in dungeons. Range is best here because they can kite mobs endlessly, if you're a melee DPS or healer expect to die over and over because they didn't bother to build a proper PvE experience for groups. PvE in this game is really just a crappy single-player experience with a $15/month fee, which I view as a single player game that charges you for its DRM.

PvP is the laggy zergfest that Dark Age of Camelot was, the difference is DAoC came out in 2001, this is 2014, why can't ESO do any better?

The game is called "Elder Scrolls" but doesn't feel like "Elder Scrolls" at all. There's no Crime system in the game, Stealth is abysmal so if you like playing Thief types in the other ES games, you won't enjoy it here. The Mage and Fighter guilds are criminally underutilized. The skill system feels like Guild Wars. It doesn't have the sandbox feel of the ES franchise, this is another linear MMO that's trying to keep the mass of people in the same herd and shuffle them along to endgame. Loot upgrades are boring and almost all of the equipment looks the same. The game isn't very good at delivering a sense of progression.

There is no central Auction House in the game, instead the game has Guild Stores. Each guild can have a maximum of 500 members, you can be in 5 guilds at a time, but if you list something in Guild A's store, Guild 2 - 5 will not see it. This means you're only ever listing items that 500 people can ever see (assuming all 500 members are active players). Because of this, you're better off vendoring most of the stuff you'd otherwise be listing in the Auction House in a proper MMO.

Tons of progress-stopping bugs and glitches. Some people have no issues, others seem to be getting nothing but issues. This has been a problem with RPGs since the beginning, but in an MMO, you can't just wait, your subscription is ticking. Can't finish a quest? Move on to the next one. But all too commonly, you move on from one glitched quest to find another glitched quest to find another glitched quest. You can't even grind to try and get a sense of progression when your quest book is filled with broken quests, because monster XP is abysmal - you can't even grind group dungeons for XP because you only get 1 xp per monster kill. They did this because they wanted you to be out in the world questing and going through their storyline, not grinding mobs to get to 50 ASAP and skipping through all their work. This wouldn't be a problem, except what they *want* everyone to do be doing, is what's broken most of the time.

Last time a big-name video game company released an MMO this broken because they thought they were so big they didn't think they needed to care, they had to fire the original staff, take the game off the shelves, tell everyone they were "sorry", and spend two years rebuilding the game. That saw the game re-released into something that was *much* better, and that's pretty much what I feel Elder Scrolls Online needs to do. This isn't a matter of issues that can be ironed out with some patches or addressed with a major content patch or expansion, it's that the entire game is in such a terrible state that the only way to fix it is to take everything apart and try again. This is just an abysmal piece of work, and I wouldn't trust anyone who had a hand in the making of this game with serving me my morning coffee.

Gameplay: Combat and animations are superb, the crafting system and open dungeons are a great experience without the frustration brought by other MMORPGs. Even regular combat feels epic.
Social Interaction: This is where there is plenty of room for improvement. The Chat system makes it a bit difficult to keep track of players around you, and I would strongly suggest them to create RP phasing. The game uses a single server where people "phase" between instances by being paired with friends and guild members. The same should be done with Roleplayers. Roleplayers are often Elder Scroll fans who delve deep into the lore of the games. They prefer better communication and interaction and thus should get a "instance phasing" of their own.

The game would get a 9, however I added an extra point to offset what I believe are unfairly low scores from users that really can't elaborate their reviews well at all.

Several times now I've logged out in frustration because of quest bugs (such as the boss is supposed to jump down from a balcony to fight you, and ends up getting stuck and floating in mid air). The game is riddled with bugs here and there, putting it simply you'll run into some form of bug probably every 10-15 minutes whether it be a graphics bug, npcs half fallen into the floor, npcs that are "stuck" in combat, audio bugs you name it. This is the main reason why i'm giving it a low score, harsh possibly for bugs but there are that many bugs and at the moment Elder Scrolls Online is flawed and is heading in the same direction as other MMO's. At this rate it'll be free to play in around 8-10 months just in time for everyone to stop playing anyway and play the next WoW expansion when it's released at the end of the year.

People should not be paying 39.99 for a game, then 8.99 on top of that for a monthly subscription for a bug riddled game from what is meant to be a top studio.

The graphics are nice, but I've failed to see anything that captures you like that of Skyrim.

The combat system is buggy, at times I've had to re-position myself because my blade just kept going through the mob and not hitting it (although naturally it could hit me). Even as a caster it just doesn't feel right.

Character Creation, nothing more than average. Not bad, but nothing special either with a load of wasted templates you'd never use.

Conclusion: You are not missing anything and chances are you won't gain anything at present only a forever burning hole in your wallet. Big let down from Bethesda who should know better than this, they had the betas, they had the players for it, they had the feedback and it's still ****

As usual you are this guy that will save the world, a chosen one, but there are hundreds other chosen ones running around doing exactly the same quests as you. This makes any attempt at immersion fail. As the story is concerned you are the lone hero everything revolves around you. The game does not introduce other players into the story in any way. Other players are just messing with your game. There is no game world or story logic explaining other players around you. Your best bet is to pretend you're alone.

Skill system and character development – completely uninspiring. When you look through the skills it's just blend. Nothing to look forward too. There is no builds that you can look at and say 'wow that sounds really cool' everything is 'meh'.

PvP is an entirely different map that could have been an independent game. There is no thrill of encountering a real life enemy in a 'normal' game.

PvE is for the most part not needed. There are some dungeons/bosses that require it but its not really that fun. I hope it will get better though, it is the only justification to continue playing for me.

The game is rather expensive without even having a trial. Don't buy it.

It is speculation on Elder Scrolls series, nothing else. Reminds of another speculation - Diablo 3, when totally positive critic review complement by totally negative user review, as most people bought it just because they played previous games, but realized this game has nothing to do with those.

The fun part about Skyrim was exploring the world, opening treasure chests and collecting loot - and you can TOTALLY do that in TESO.... Only with the added stipulation of thousands of other players beating you to it. The crafting system is amusing at first but eventually just turns into a chore as even if you became the best blacksmith you can be, you can't use the gear you create without being a certain level.

PVP in Cyrodil seems promising at first but then you realize the subtle nuances of how aggravating it can really be. Going in at level 10, you're automatically doomed to lose any solo PVP you encounter as level 50+ (veteran ranks) can solo three or more level 10s and a level 27 can ace you; even with HP and Damage ratings all being balanced out to level 50 regardless of level. It even gives you a cheeky little warning saying that you'll be at a "slight disadvantage" because you haven't maxxed out your skills but it doesn't really matter because the PvP is practically designed around being level 50. Which is interesting because you don't gain XP from participating in PVP.

Beyond that, PVP also has another annoying aspect in the form of logistics. In order to get close to the battlefield, you often times need to spawn at a Home Base (an area for your alliance to spawn at) which is more annoying/frustrating to use than necessary. You have to find a flat piece of ground which can't be anywhere near a graveyard, keep or other landmark - presenting you with the problem of: "Holy ****, why did level design make Cyrodil a giant ****ing hill that I can place this thing on". Assuming you manage to get past that irritating aspect, there's the factor of it costing the same amount as SIX TREBUCHETS and only having enough spawns for 20 people. Which wouldn't be so bad if you could rez people with any sense of ease but good luck with that considering that in order to rez people you need a filled Grand Soul Gem, regardless of their level. Healers have no way of rezzing people, and all this adds up to one big Walking Simulator with intermittent, frustrating combat that isn't at all enjoyable unless you've gone through every quest in the rest of the game to get to level 50.

Questing is about as annoying as one might expect from an MMO. "Fight 6 of these" and "Go here to get the next part of the quest just to walk back" are rampant with dungeons having absolutely no loot (at least as far as I saw). There are a few that are really interesting and captivating as the Elder Scrolls usually has, but the rest are bland, boring and uninspired. To exacerbate this irritating factor, the regions seem needlessly open and spread out, being as there's usually nothing of interest that doesn't revolve around questing and if it is of interest, there won't be anything of value in it.

These sort of things wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that you can't access the forums without invitation and sending in suggestions to the developers is done through a website which has a non-functional 'send' button. For $60 + $15/month subscription, it's a terrible buy.

Great action combat. Incredible engrossing story-lines. Wonderfully done voice-overs. This game is just a joy to play for the Elder scrolls and MMO fans.

I have thoroughly enjoyed ESO. I'll start with the combat/levelling. The evolution of skill paths is **** genius, it allows for tons of different combinations and it really feels like you could use just about any spec that you come up with effectively. The combat has most of the aspects of skyrim (sneaking is similar, etc.) except you have a tool bar with skills that is similar to GW2. There are no cooldowns on the skills, it is all about your stamina/magicka, so there is a lot of skill behind ordering your attacks and doing appropriate combos. There is an active dodge mechanic which keeps you on your toes and you have to be ready for aoes and power attacks from the mobs. It isn't a hyper complex combat system with amazing AI but it is much better than any other MMOs. ESO does a good job of borrowing good ideas from other MMOs and making them unique to the game while removing flaws that were apparent in their inspirations. There are anchors (like Rifts) and world boss spawns, public dungeons that you find just by wandering the environment. It really feels like elder scrolls to me, there are times where I completely forget that I am playing online. I like the artistry the most in this game, once you get past the tutorial and into some of the cool questlines there are some fantastic animation sequences/artistry. The environments are amazing (in the main quest for the Pact you end up in hammerfell at a tomb that is just breathtaking. This game retains that "Elder Scrolls Vibe" where you are totally entertained just wandering about the world looking at things. I find that I hardly pay attention to my levels/skills because I am legitimately invested in the quest lines, stories, and environments. This is not to say that there aren't grinding quests, but they are set up in such a way that they are auxiliary to a main goal or mission and you can get them out of the way at the same time (2 birds one stone, kill X number of people on your way to Y objective for the main questline in the area). The voice acting is impressive, tons of speaking characters and they all have entertaining dialogue. I can go on and on but I think you get it.
There are some issues though, here are the ones that I have come up with. There is no open world PvP, so you can't take your character from one alliance and go terrorize the towns of another. This is disappointing because I love to do **** like that, and also I would like to explore the other zones without being forced to make an alt. The ranged combat is a bit frustrating, once you target an enemy the bow sort of just auto-aims at it. you can jump and do 360s and still land shots every time. It sort of ruins the immersion having arrows aim like that. I would suggest aimable arrows with more power so that dodging becomes a factor. I can see how scripting every arrow would be a feat of programming, so I can't complain too much. Some of the collection related grindy-sidequests have non-instanced collectibles which can be a pain in the ass if you are with a herd of people all trying to do the same quest and competing for the same collectibles. I can't comment on the endgame content but the world PvP is pretty entertaining, it is similar to WvWvW except the land is much larger and the siege is built in a better way. I'll have to mess with it more.
Overall, ESO is probably the best MMO I've played in years, simply because it actually feels like an adventure and I enjoy the exploration and questing more than I ever have. There are flaws, but most of them are flaws that you would find in any other MMO (especially the last 2 that I listed). The environments are what make me come back, and the lore is integral to the game. The fact that it's in the second era makes all of the story fascinating because you find yourself working with the tribunal and a bunch of historical figures that you only get to read about in the other games.
As a critic of many MMOs, I would give this one a 9/10. Probably the best rating I have given out in years and years. Let me know if you want further detail on anything. Don't let the people hating on the game get to you, most of them only played the beta or didn't get past level 10. The quest stories for the leveling zones always have cool cutscenes and you often find yourself whisked away to other worlds/continents, this keeps you from feeling like you are restricted to your alliance's land.

Grinding certain combos of keys to get good DPS is not my idea of a good MMO. What we see in the MMO market today is the established concept of just grinding through the levels with no connection to the story and absolutely no interaction with the environment.

ESO is far from that and it is surprisingly really very good. It is to a great extent what I want an elder scrolls MMO to be! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The best leveling experience I have ever had. I have had quests that got so emotional I nearly cried, there are quests that have you build up a city from no inhabitants. There are multiple endings to some quests. Now if that was not cool, later in the game, some NPC's you chose to save help you out in a Final Battle.

Another one of the features that sets this game apart is the PvP- You can hear the siege weapons Blasting into the ground, as you return fire with your own. You can lead a team of players over to enemy territory to cut off enemy reinforcements. Oh and did I mention that the PvP zone is a fully functional zone with quests and public dungeons too.

The future of this game looks great too, they have a ton of free updates in the works, including the high level 4 - 12 player "Adventure Zone" , horse racing, a justice system, and more quest lines like the dark brotherhood and thieves guild.

This is clearly a game released 'ready or not' on a marketing schedule. There are ongoing issues that leave some players (like me) virtually untouched while hitting others hard. These issues are being continually addressed but even so - not good enough.

Unfortunately Customer Service ranges from at best, indifferent through to actively malevolent in the case of the scheduling of the regular EU maintenance for Sunday morning.

'Our convenience, not the customer' appears to be their motto. Not good enough if you want people to buy into a premium price game with a monthly sub.

And now I'm going to tell you why I immediately took out the longest (180 day) sub I could. The reason is actually very simple. This is the best MMO I have played in a number of years.

LOTRO, Star Wars, Guild Wars, Rift and Conan? None come close.

    What makes it so good?

First - the setting. It's Elder Scrolls. It's Tamriel bought to life. You are in a setting with a depth that shows in the books you find, the look and feel of the regions. the background chatter. The graphics are top notch and very 'Skyrim'. Not seen better in any MMO.

Second - the questing. Quest chains are constantly engaging. They all have a real purpose and are disparate threads that weave together into an overarching story line. No 'go kill 7 wolves' or 'go gather 8 bits of wood' because basically 'I'm a lazy-ass NPC who can't be bothered' nonsense.

Plus - it's all voice acted. Not by the usual 'will recite dialogue for food' in off the street bilge. We're talking Michael Gambon and we're talking John Cleese. We're talking real professionals at every turn. The story quality and story-telling is basically first class in every respect.

Third - and this is the big one. This is what makes this game so good. This is what will have you creating different characters and thinking carefully about your options. I'm talking the character development and progression system, which is as close an implementation of the traditional Elder Scrolls 'build the character you want' as you could get in an MMO.

It begins with choosing a Race. These have different bonuses but aren't of crucial importance. You them choose one of the 4 classes. Classes each have their own skill lines but are just a starting point on which to build the kind of character that suits you. More on this later.

You get 3 basic stats -Health, Stamina and Magika. The latter 2 are the resources that power skills. You get points to allocate from levelling and from completing some quest lines.

These interact with Weapon, Armour, Guild, Race, and Alliance skill lines.

How you spend the character points you get from levelling, questing and discovering 'skyshards' is what really shapes your character. In other games if you want to tank and be the melee guy you would pick the Dragon Knight ESO class, throw on heavy armour and shove a sword in his hand.

Not in ESO. You want to be a Sorcerer and be able to tank? Throw on heavy armour, pick up a big sword, develop your healing and shielding skill - maybe learn to summon a big-ass Storm Elemental to take some heat and off you go.

The freedom is incredible. One of my characters is a Dragon Knight. These are basically tanks with a way with fire. But I'm old and slow. I don't like tanking but I do like some of their cool skills. So - put him in light armour, specialise in fire staff magic, choose a range of supporting skills and you have a Pyromancer Battle Mage. Fantastic. That's just one example and I cannot emphasise enough how great this system is.

I was going to bang on about the in-depth crafting system but this is going on too long. But I will tell you about the combat.

This is an action based combat system. You pick 5 of your skills (driven by stamina and magika and which can be morphed into a choice of enhanced version with skill points) for an action bar (and a 6th Ultimate Super Skill). At level 15 when you get to swap weapons in combat this is 12 skills. It sounds limited but it is not. It enables you to develop routines and tactics to suit yourself. I'm a bit old and slow so I like to keep the dodging and rolling to a minimum. I can build for that. You can build for your own strengths and weaknesses.

Finally I'm giving a big shout-out for the PvP. There is a whole Province where Alliances can wage war (no PvP outside of it). There are Keeps to attack and defend, dungeons to explore and siege engines to hurt people and smash stuff with. It is incredible and I'm saying this as an inveterate non-PvP type.

Way too long story short. If you are an Elder Scrolls fan or a fantasy MMO player you can buy this game with absolute confidence you will have a lot of fun.

Bugs are temporary, class is permanent. This is going to be a 5 Star game soon.

This is neither the best TES experience, nor is it the best MMO experience.

Of all the things I’ve disagreed with over previous TES games, the opinion that the graphics are amazing is top of the list. While I really enjoy playing through each Elder Scrolls title, the characters, the materials used on scenery (glossy bricks overload!) and the terribly ropey voice and motion capture acting all put a knot in my stomach when I first start playing. But hey, I forget about it after a while and get down to just enjoying the freedom and little side-stories that are going on.

Now, the graphics in ESO for me are much, much better. Unfortunately, after you’ve gotten over the graphics, the stuff that makes TES games so endearing and involving - the “meat”, isn’t there. The progression-style gameplay and hand-holding takes away all real sense of adventure, and while you can still just go off and explore, don’t expect to be able to enjoy the fruits of your explorations until you’ve gone back to where you came from and followed the breadcrumbs until they lead you to these amazing places you’ve discovered.

Which aren’t amazing. Most public dungeons are carbon copies of one another - a small circuit, sometimes ending in a Shard - which makes me wonder if the only purpose of these places is to stop lower level adventurers (yes, you, you dirty explorer types!) from farming shards.

Some of the group dungeons are interesting, until you’ve done them once and realise that actually they’re really a-b-c. There’s no intelligent thought behind them, and when puzzles (cartographic or mental) are present, they’re of the tic-tac-toe variety you expect to find in airport crossword puzzle books. Dungeon Master has more to offer.

Above ground things aren’t much better. Kill X rats is replaced with Rescue X Guan, or X prisoners, or X *insert bright new idea here*. The point is, there is still copious use of # / # in the Quest Tracker.

Quest Tracker. The worst quest tracking system I’ve ever seen in any game, single or multiplayer. When you pick up a new quest, or hand in a milestone on a quest you’re on, the tracker changes to highlight something else. Support helpfully informed me to press T to cycle through the quests. Thanks for that. How many quests do you have in your Journal?

The UI in general is a nightmare. We invented floating windows for a reason, people. FullScreen mode for every-single-aspect of character and inventory management is like stepping back to the ‘80’s. I don’t care if it’s for console too… I’m a PC MMOer and we’re your bread & butter, fools.

And Chat. Well, you have /zone and you have your /g# guild chats. That’s it. Because there’s no public AH, everyone spams /zone with their WTT messages. So technically /zone is mostly spam. Meanwhile, because everyone can join 5 guilds, /g# is often either dead, or filled with the worst offenders of /zone. I’ve found one guild which isn’t like that, and I like em, but 95% of the people shown as online don’t respond to chat because they’re only listening to some *other* guild … their presence in this guild is only so they can access the guild bank & store. Don’t ask about chat lag…is it 2014 or 1992?

Crafting is quite good. Anyone can make anything, so you don’t need to worry about selling in a few months.

Combat blows. I died 3 times last night because the hotkey input was lagging … movement and combat are in separate packets it appears, so you can find yourself able to move but not fight (and NPCs don’t care, pew pew).

3/10 .. 2 points deducted for wasting $200 on this thing, which is the most galling part of it all.

There are some bugs, which can creep up but for an mmoRPG launch this is the smoothest I've ever encountered and I've seen a lot, going all the back to NWN, UO, etc..

Importantly, of course some people are not going to like it, that's awesome in my book because if they did I probably wouldn't, plenty of other MMOs for their kind. If you don't like it, or just want to be "hipster hater trash" then I suggest moving on, because the game is solid and gonna disappoint you in your need to hate to feel good about yourself. ;)

That being said, dive into this game and enjoy it for what it is - an Elder Scrolls game, and chances are you'll be having a blast. The game feels and looks like the three last ES games. The world, the lore, and the quests are all the best in any MMO I have played so far. Naturally, ES has a lot of lore, but Zenimax has done a grand job of implementing this into their game, and even putting a few of MK's obscure lore bits in there too.

The questing is the best in any MMO I have played thus far. All of the quest givers are fully voiced with voice actors who for the most part does a fantastic job. The NPCs you meet has character, personalities, and it immerses you into the quests like no other MMO.

Questing isn't the only way to level in this game, you can explore the world too, which you're rewarded heavily for. The world is dotted with chests to find, crafting materials and ingredients, skyshards (which gives you a skill point) and quests you may not have found otherwise. All the areas are huge, and are properly fleshed out to provide a great experience.

In terms of combat - initially, chances are that it won't impress you. As you start out the game, you won't have all manner of skills, and you won't yet understand just how many you can unlock, and there are a lot. Once you hit around level 10, when you unlock a majority of skills for your class/weapon, you will truly appreciate just how deep the skillsystem is in this game, and the amount of variety it has.

Crafting. Ahhh crafting. They have really hit the nail on the head with this one. There are 6 lot of professions (Clothing, blacksmithing, woodworking, alchemy, enchanting, provisioning) in the game, who are all incredibly usefull. Crafting plays a big part in the game, as you can actually craft set items, and also create extremly powerful gear that can match that of which you find in dungeons or otherwise. The crafting system is deep, fleshed out, and fun.

In the end, I think it's fair to say that ESO is a pretty damn good MMO. Though it does have some bugs at this writing moment, the amount of potential and effort in this game is quite baffling. The game, is absolutely, definitely, a great game.

Boy were they wrong. In fact in many cases they turned out to be factually inaccurate. Why people would feel the need to lie about a game is beyond me and seems rather pathetic. The game is brilliant. The vastly inflating numbers of people jumping in say it all. As someone who played WoW for MANY years, and has consistently failed to find a game to replace it since, I finally feel this is it. The more you play it the more depth this game gives you, and the more surprises are revealed. It really is a fantastic game.

The graphics are beautiful for an MMO, and have lovely detail and appeal. I love the way you can branch out and explore, and the game rewards you for it. Side quests, hidden goodies, lore for mages guild progression. I love how it's not like those boring MMOs where you have to kill 10 mobs, collect 10 parts etc all the time.

To not like this game would be near impossible. If I had to complain about anything, it would be that more games should be like this.

As a Skyrim fan there were parts that made me laugh - Sheogorath is brilliant and funny. Questing for the wabberjack was great, and the icy tomb was a massive Skyrim throwback, but has all the parts you wish were in Skyrim too.

Long term appeal is pretty much a sure thing. I'm not going to cover the massive amount of planned content to be added to the game, a huge benefit of a subscription based title, which will ensure longer term appeal. The current content is plenty big enough already. To boot, the flexibility in character design is HUGE. So many different combinations and builds, I've already started experimenting with alts, and loving every one of them. That alone is something that hasn't had much appeal since the days of WoW.

Bugs - there are a few at the moment. That is to be expected. Despite that, I'm giving it a 10 - the key bit for me is that I see them being worked on very quickly and they are actively tackling them. For me that means a game that will rapidly improve and grow. With all the game has to offer already, this is the icing on the cake.

The voice acting is brilliant, and in some cases hilarious. Really a very very good job all round.

Simply look into it for yourself or ask around - odds are if you don't know someone who already owns it, you will do shortly. Take a look for yourself before being swayed by empty reviews such as "It's boring because I find all MMOs boring"

On launch, it is beyond buggy, it should still be in beta. They have had two patches to fix broken quests in the starter areas in the first three days of launch. Their beta testing had failed miserably and testers were not given enough time to report bugs. The company still pushed a half finished game out the door and... honestly.... the bugs, at launch, really break it. So far I have encountered six quests where I cannot progress. Since I play in the form of a completionist and not a power leveler I cannot complete a zone and that reduces my play time... Despite the completely unacceptable, buggy, and pathetic release the game is not bad. The real issue is balance, balance in pvp and pve is a joke in this game, it makes wow look halfway decent, in terms of balance... as bad as that sounds. Two handed weapon damage is a joke, there is little point to using two handed weapons. Every other weapon type, in the game, deals a lot more damage... There are no excuses for half of this, just none. If you want to release a beta at least be ready for some very harsh criticism. That having been said, it is still fairly fun and will give you several hours a week of enjoyment... Now hopefully they will fix the bugs before the end of the first month...

Though I am a realist and I have been on the new MMO train many times before so I won’t really know for a few months. But man, right now nothing compares to ESO. The last time I had this much fun in an MMO was the beast itself, WoW.

The graphics are great; the questing is fun and not your typical MMO drudgery. The crafting system is deep, incredibly fun and get this, actually useful. I also love the fact that I can be a mage tank or a warrior healer if I really want to. Tired of being melee and want to pick up a bow? Do it! Want to wear plate as a caster? Do it! The possibilities are amazing. And PVP, one word: epic.

To make it short and sweet this game is the best MMO I’ve played since I first played WoW almost 10 years ago. It’s just fun. Plain and simple this game is incredibly fun.

One last word on people complaining about there being a subscription fee: I’ve played almost every single major MMO that has been released in the past 10+ years and have not found a single free to play game that is anywhere near as good as subscription games. I am talking about true MMOs. Every free to play MMO I’ve ever played is so limiting in content at the free level it’s not worth even playing. As a matter of fact when I do play those games I end up paying a lot more than $15. You get what you pay for.

Let me put it this way: This game can not be fully explained, only experienced. It looks beautiful, it sounds beautiful, and combat makes you feel like a badass.

Combat is incredible. I'll be attacking a guy when I see another enemy with a huge 2 handed sword rearing back for a power attack. I bash the guy I'm fighting, then turn to block the power attacking coward to the side of me, and I hear an EXTREMELY satisfying "CLANK" onto my shield, effectively stunning him. I then counter him with a power slash of my own, knocking him, in his vulnerable state, to the ground. Honestly, the combat feels like Assassin's Creed at times, when you're actually doing it right, with blocks and rolls.

And the rolls come in handy. Some enemy telegraphs are very punishing. Some of them deal devastating damage, while other will knock you down for several seconds, leaving you at the mercy of enemy blows.

Magic combat? Awesome. You can feel very glass cannon-like as you root enemies and hide behind the tank, or you can get up close and personal. Actually, that leads me to one of the coolest part of the game..

Skill lines. Yes, there are 4 classes in the game. That means very little. You play however the Hell you want to play. I did a dungeon with a sorcerer who was wearing full plate armor and a 2 handed mace. She would charge the enemy, knock them down, strike them with LIGHTING from the SKY, and then knock the enemy back on their ass with an uppercut of her giant mace. Yes. She was a sorcerer. Well, she was a "sorcerer".

The Nightblade class is probably perceived as the "rogue" class, but I've seen Nightblades in full plate, focusing on health stealing skills from the nightblade siphoning tree, and they weren't rogue at all. In fact, you can make an amazing Shadowknight. Cutting enemies down with a greatsword while stealing their health with DOTs to sustain your carnage.

Want to make a ranger? Make a sorcerer to summon a powerful pet, and go deep into the bow and arrow skill line. Congratulations. You're a badass Ranger.

Any race can be any class, use any skill line, wear any armor, and use any weapon. However, you must make some sort of commitment to unlock your full potential. Heavy armor skill line helps survival, but it doesn't really help you with mana efficiency or spell effectiveness. How do we fix this? Enchant your heavy armor with caster stats! And how about MAKING your own armor?

The ESO crafting system is the best crafting system I've ever seen in any MMO, ever. It is so fun, easy, rewarding, and you can make so many different looking sets of armor. You can create and wear FULL nordic medium armor, or FULL orcish plate, or you can wear dark elf leather armor with an Argonian cloth hood.

This game is all about immersion and freedom. When you ask for DPS for a dungeon and a dragonknight in cloth shows up, you have no right to say "Hey, DKs don't wear cloth!" Just wait, that person may shock you with their unique playstyle.

Buy a horse, upgrade it. Find unique armor, destroy it at a forge to research it's traits so that you can now MAKE that type of armor, adventure around zones doing the huuuuge number of fun quests, go do the beautiful dungeons, kill some critter and use their guts to fish off of a pier. Use the fish to make that fish stew that you just learned from the recipe that you found in the chest that was hidden under that bridge over the lava pool.

Oh.. The chests.. When you find a chest, your heart skips a beat. Be ready, though. You must pick the chests. If you fail, someone may be right behind you to steal your loot!

This game is borderline perfect, it's worth 15 bucks a month, and I honestly feel sorry for people who love MMOs and/OR Skyrim and aren't playing this game.

Do it, guys. This game is GOLDEN. 10 out of 10.

My only complaint at first was that my shield was very small.. Guess what? It was a noob shield. When I got level 34 and started crafting with dwarven ore, my shield got bigger. So, for now, I can't complain.

Having 200+ hours into Skyrim I can honestly say ESO does a fairly solid job mixing that Skyrim first person adventurer with that MMO feel. However what it does not do is excel at either. If you are a hardcore PvP player chances are you're not going to like ESO. You can’t just troll low level areas and “gank noobs”. If you are a hardcore Skyrim player chances are you may like ESO.

What I like: Awesome PVE experience, areas, towns, dungeons are well laid out. The writing and acting for the quests is very well done. It's easy to navigate and the only real thing keeping you in one specific area from another, are the level of mobs around there. I have yet to see game breaking lag even in densely populated areas - including PVP / Cyrodiil. I REALLY enjoy the “look for group” feature. This is a great idea and its executed well. If you’re outside a dungeon or instance and looking for players to team up with…instead of spamming chat looking for folks you simply go into the group interface of the game, click the search icon, refine the search by filling out drop down menus related to size of group, areas, or specific dungeons / instances. You can even filter based on roles (tank, healer, dps, etc.) Like Skyrim you can get lost in the PVE experience and not even touch PVP if you so desire.
What needs work: There are still some minor annoyances. Some quests are still bugged and prevent progress - this is exceptionally frustrating when you could be in the 5th part of a 6 part quest. However since go live I've only had one quest not fix itself by just logging out and back in. Another nuisance is having group members not in the same "game instance". Instead you see them just as a floating arrow. In fact what they see on their screen will actually vary from what you're seeing (in terms of lootable items, etc.) It would be nice to see some UI / inventory

Neither here nor there: Since the game does not force you down specific class / race paths you are open to design your character essentially any way you see fit. One issue with this is if you’re looking to specialize in crafting the enormous amounts of resources involved quickly fill up pack and bank space. You will easily find yourself creating mule characters just to retain crafting materials.

Conclusion: Did I buy the game – yes. Do I have any buyer’s remorse – absolutely not. Although Zenimax does offer some marginal discounts for buying advanced chunks of subscription time I was really hoping to see some sort of “family plan” implemented. For those old farts like myself who actually like to game with their kids, this title will break the bank! Three copies of the game ($120 – 180) 6 months subscription for 3 players ($250). 6 month sub discounted 13.99/mo = $83 per player every 6 months.
ESO gets an easy 8 out of 10 from me.

I started with the assumption that i was only going to play because my friends were playing and never play when they werent and then the game would die off in a month or so like all the other mmos ive played the past couple of years. I have not played a single video game for an entire weekend since WoW came out.... forever ago. and This weekend; this grown ass man, with a day job, a girlfriend, a job, and 3 time consuming hobbies set everything aside this weekend and just let this game consume me.

the only thing i can compare the newness and wonder to is vanilla wow. do you remember back then. when things were new and the systems that we have in place today werent even imagined yet. like duty finders? and crafting your own weapons at the lower levels wasnt utterly useless? remember when the story mattered? no? oh wait... the story doesnt matter in wow? oh ... shoot.. you're totally right.

thats what this is like, but so much more. i truly believe that this is the mmo for me (for the next couple years as long as they keep updating it) to find out if its the mmo for you i think you have to play it. because to be completely honest i thought i was going to hate it. i even dogged on it. but after i played up to level 10 and was a part of an epic pvp battle I knew there was no going back to FFXIV (my previous mmo home away from home)

you truly have to play it to form an opinion, but i believe you will be entertained for a while at the very least.

This game, I like it. I played the beta and it made me want to buy this game. It's fun, gives you enough Elder Scrolls to be satisfying, but enough new things to remain interesting. The character models look better in my opinion than the models in Oblivion and Skyrim, and the environments look pretty good. I look forward to seeing what they do next with this game.

I've done a few dungeons and they've been fun as well. The playerbase so far seems to be more mature too. Also the launch was the smoothest launch of an online game that I've ever been part of.

Sure, there's a few bugs that they will probably fix in the first patches, but nothing gamebreaking.

I would highly recommend this game to everyone who likes MMO's and Elder Scrolls and urge you to play to at least level 10 before judging so you can try Cyrodiil and the dungeons!

It's sad that most of the negative reviews here are written by people who haven't played this game for more than a few hours at most and haven't seen any real content at all. They only judge the game because it plays different from your average MMO. MMO's in general also get a lot of hate and sometimes in justice, but I for one will gladly be paying the monthly fee for this game. It's well worth it.

The crafting system is simple, yet complicated and interesting to work with, it even takes the trait learning (offline leveling) from EVE, which adds even more flavor. There are quests everywhere, you just have to get out and explore to find them, its a remarkably open world feel on the mainland. I started in beta in November and the game did not interest me at all; however, as the beta's trudged along the game improved dramatically. It is deep in lore, the megaserver means your never alone, the PVP is like nothing I have played in years, truly spectacular, even if your not a hardcore PVP'r. The dungeon mechanics are very fun and easy to learn. The skill tree is just complicated enough to make it feel like your choices really count and that your character is unique to you. I think with the modern MMO, ESO has stuck a very good balance. The launch went remarkably smooth; although, some of our guild did find bugged quests, there were work-arounds and they were quickly addressed by Zenimax. One recommendation I would make is to do your homework for this MMO, there is over 20 years of lore behind its story, and when I came into it and started playing I knew very little. This made the game very boring and confusing (for instance some characters call a race a dark-elf, another person might call them a dunmer, and there are 10 races), it doesn't hold your hand or tell tons of back-story. ESO expects you to know the races and their history already; however, I spent some time watching You-tube lore videos (which there are some excellent quality ones available) and suddenly the world made since and the game had much more depth. This is a game where the story matters and really helps the player to feel engaged in the world. If your wanting a fresh take on the MMO genre then give ESO a chance, it just might surprise you and give you an MMO home for years to come. Expand

If you have a medium- to high end rig you are definitely going to enjoy the graphics style of this game. No cartoony-graphics here.

This game doesnt hold your hand as much as the others do. Some people give bad reviews because of this, but in my opinion its a good thing. Also the combat is comparable hard to other games. Especially dungeons. Tanking in this game is something else when you cannot just tab-target, but you need to aim the mob to taunt it while its running around. People complain about that too, but again I think its a good thing. The game is harder and manages to create a difficulty that is more about your own skills than min-maxing.

Crafting in this game is also way more complicated and rewarding than in other mmo's. At the moment in low levels it feels that the quest and loot drops are second to what you can craft, but what I have read the game is more about skills & crafters than to get the most epic loot from the most epic boss. Don't know how that changes in the higher levels.

In general, even thou the game is just out, it already feels a solid experience. I usually know from my first levels will I like mmo or not. ESO definitely gives that wipe.

The combat is terrible, Bethesda had a fluid system of combat with "Skyrim". The hits looked natural and the the system was simple yet efficient. In a fast paced game it is best to apply the K.I.S.S. method to the attack system and try to make the fighting as simple as possible. With ESO, this was blatently ignored. Instead, the developers seemed to designer the ultimate "Mortal Combat"/RPG failure. Power attacks coming from a nord with a claymore do very little in opposition to my hot keyed "special move number three button attack" which looked like yellow "Wolverine" claw marks across my screen. What the attack was supposed to be? Not a clue, but it did more damage than a driven power attack from a sword designed around it's own weight so whatever. On top of that, they added a dodge function; which in principle is great idea but never seemed to work when multiple enemies randomly respawned and surrounded me; thus killing me before I could register what happened.
Now we come to the graphics; when buying this game, I had a bit of worry in regards to my 3 yr. old stock Toshiba PC handling the game. Don't worry though, because I was okay thanks to the latest graphics that the year 2004 had to offer. Though, in ESO's defense, it doesn't look as bad as "Star Wars: The Old Republic".
Lastly, I have to say that the quests are my biggest complaint. The friendly NPC's of my faction seemed to be the most inept people in existence (though, if they were able to actually complete their missions then there wouldn't be a game). How one would expect your faction to survive in reality when they can't even stop bickering as to who gives who first aid during an enemy attack is beyond me. I understand that Bethesda didn't want to make a "kill 100 enemies" game but it's as if they think that their fanbase has the IQ of a six year old child. Also, this isn't like other sandbox style games where you can (normally) kill minor quest giver NPC's if you don't like them, such as a racist dark elf.
In closing, if you want freedom this isn't your game; but if you're cool with goofball combat and a beat to death plot then this is the game for you.

The combat sucks. Hard. It takes the dodging system of The Secret World but leaves out its dynamic abilities. Instead, you just have standard MMO abilities on a hotbar -- sic the pet, shoot a poison arrow, and then autoattack. Except you can't even autoattack, you just have to keep clicking the left mouse button over and over. And then push 1 for poison arrow again when it runs out. Every once in a while, a red shape appears. You must double-tap a direction to dodge it within, oh, 5 seconds. Whoop-de-doo.

The writing is unbelievably bland. The quests are stupid. Go here. Talk to this guy. Listen to him talk about something irrelevant. Collect 5 of X/Meet 3 of Y/Kill 3 Z and collect their soul motes. View unskippable, high-production-quality and utterly boring cutscene about some sort of undead spirit war... oh, come on, what year is this? You can't come up with anything more interesting?

The graphics are technically excellent and utterly lacking in creativity. Everything looks stoic, sullen, brown and boring. There is no artistry or soul to the landscapes and somehow, nature looks industrial. If id software made a MMO, this is what it'd look like -- straight and to the point, and not particularly interesting. It clearly serves as the backdrop to something else in the game that was supposed to take center stage, not as a thing in and of itself to be explored and loved.

But... what is that something else? Six hours into the game, I still haven't found it.

Maybe it was the hype. Maybe it was the promise of freedom, or the lure of better combat. Maybe it was just that faint hope of something, anything different to set it apart from the diseased MMO orgy. But I'm not impressed. The Elder Scrolls died a little today. And the MMO industry slips further into oblivion.

On pen and paper this was a brilliant idea, and it does me great pain that I believe the game deserves no better than a 4/10.

First and foremost, the attitude the player has going into the game will make or break whether or not they will like it. Expecting the typical Elder Scrolls experience, but being able to play with friends? This isn't the game you want to be going for. Expecting a new MMO in a continent that we've surely all grown to love? Then the game offers that, and by all means, don't hold back from buying it if you believe the monthly fee is worth it.

However, the game has a few standout issues. The biggest concern would have to be the size of the world versus where the player will often be going. While there are many places to explore, the areas often will only have a generic quest typical to MMOs, and after the player completes this quest, they will be given no incentive to return. The art team spent a bit too much money on a world that, in the end, will serve as a draw-distance horizon 80% of the time.

The next issue is the combat, although it's not as bad overall . The melee combat specifically, while done well, is very weightless, often seeming like a heavy two-handed hammer is as easy to swing as a dagger. The spells, however, are mixed between good and bad. Zenimax definitely did the right thing in bringing back Oblivion's and Morrowind's style of spellcasting, where spells do not have to be bound to a hand, laving room for a weapon and shield, or two weapons. This also works very well with the limited number of keybindings, so the player does not have to enter the spellbook every time to change between spells. However, although the developers promised there would be no specialized classes, the four classes that were introduced have a bit too much separation between available spells. While this isn't necessary a horrible thing, it definitely takes away from the player making their character different from all of the other characters playing the same base class.

On the topic of characters, customization is also lacking based on what Zenimax could have done. Hairstyles, for example, are low on number and generally don't have an aesthetic appeal. Scars, as well, are seriously lacking, and could certainly use more variety.

Overall, although this is far from being the worst game of the decade, it certainly falls short on what it promises to be. The box price is a little on the high side with the $15 monthly price coming after the first free month, especially if you decide to purchase the Imperial Edition. There is also the problem with lore inconsistencies, but that would be touching upon personal preference. As a standalone MMO, this would definitely be worth the price, but it certainly doesn't live up to its namesake, and hardcore fans of the series should approach the game cautiously, but definitely not avoid it entirely.

Quite unsure on where to start for this one. I can say that I have been greatly addicted to this game ever since the five day early access. It definitely brings a lot of new and great ideas to the MMO genre. Even if they have been done before it makes them feel new and exciting.

To start off, the questing set up is amazing. No matter where you go in the game you're never more than a few minutes without a quest, I actually never really found myself without a quest at most times. They are set up easy and appear on your map as an arrow sort of symbol. If it's a quest you haven't done it will appear as black, and if it's a quest you're on it will be white. You can cycle through your current accepted quests with the T button. It makes it really easy because the one you select will make the arrow appear as white, so you know that's the quest you're on. You can also just as easily go into the J button, which will show all your quests in a little more detail. The quests are actually quite fun themselves. They didn't feel repetitive too often and it didn't feel like a big grind.

The maps and areas are quite large, so it would take a rather long time to run out of land mass to explore. I found myself exploring new areas for a long time, It just didn't get boring. A lot of effort went into the scenery and it's great to look at.

The voice acting is another amazing thing about "ESO" It has been done very well, and if I can remember right, every interaction with an NPC is voice acted.

But what about the bad? Unfortunately I did come across a fair few hiccups along the way. They weren't entirely game ruining, but did tend to frustrate me a little sometimes.
To start off with this, I'm going to mention, that I do know it's still in its early stages and should hopefully get better along the way.

For the first annoying thing. I did mention before that the land mass was big and fun to explore. This is all true, but sometimes that was bad. I felt they didn't put down enough way points, Sure you can discover them and then go there when needed, But some were so far apart, and the specific place you need to go could be in the middle of two, very distant from each other. Sure you can just instant port there for a little over 70 gold, but the more you had to do it, the more it went up. I remember having to port for 600 gold at one stage. I understand why they do this, they want you to see the area for yourself, but once you keep going back and forth from area to area. You've seen enough and just want to get straight to where you want to be. This wasn't that bad, Just a little frustrating at times. You could always use the horse if you have one (still takes a little while) but not everyone got the imperial edition. In that case it's 17,000 gold to get a horse mount. I know this may seem like a petty complaint, and I feel it is, but it did get me fired up sometimes.

I can complain about the broken and glitched quests all I like but everyone who has already played the game knows that. I'm still surprised as to why companies think it's okay to release a game that still has broken parts through it. It's becoming more and more the norm these days. Companies wouldn't of dared to do this even as little as ten years ago. Now it seems like more and more companies are resorting to it. "Don't worry, We will just have updates and patch everything" Is a pretty bad attitude. It's just not on.

I could go on and on about the bad, Also the good. It kind of evens it's self out in the end. No game is perfect and I cant wait to see what it's like in a few months. I could also go about it not keeping true to the "Elder Scrolls" way, Just remember it is an MMO and a good one at that. Maybe it shouldn't be pay to play, maybe it's worthy enough for it. I'm sure we will all know in a few months.

All in all, I actually do really like this game. I could go on and on about it. If you haven't already played it, I recommend giving it a good go, even if it's only for a month.

Definitely deserves an 8 for what it is, People giving it a 4 and such, just doesn't make sense. You can see how much effort they have put into it and how versatile the game really is. Give it a shot I promise you will like it.

Honestly, it's just not very good. It doesn't play or feel like an Elder Scrolls game, combat is awful, and the aesthetics are plasticky and low quality. The lore and questing is mediocre at best, and coming from the TES world, that just isn't acceptable. It has it's moments, but it just isn't worth the box price, let alone the ridiculous monthly fee.

Zenimax has said there are further content updates coming out in weeks of the launch. WEEKS. That's great news.

Content locusts have already hit level 50+Vr10(basically you get to cap and start working on "veteran levels" so level cap is basically 60) but hey. PvP is engaging enough to be a stopgap filler until new content comes out.

The combat system is smooth and intuitive and offers more room for tactical decisions by not relying on a tab targeting system. Crafting and gathering is an absolute joy to progress into because of the simplicity of the AI that eases players into the complexity that the system holds. Don't listen to the negatives. This game looks better than vanilla Skyrim & the quests are a lot more fun.

Oh yeah Its also 600+ hours of gameplay if you play all 3 alliances with 25 maps that are about 1/2 the size of Skyrim.

I am playing as a high elf sorcerer and it is a weak character. No good AOE and no meaningful control spells at all. Early in the game any 2 enemies can take you down. Don't bother joining the fighters guild as the first quest line is not possible with a sorcerer. In Skyrim stealth was a real advantage and one can argue the most powerful combat tactic in the game. In ESO it is meaningless. In Skyrim I could learn any spell but in ESO I am constrained to the ones they assign my character. This makes Sorcerer both boring and needlessly hard to play. In Skyrim you could sell almost anything for some gold, but in ESO many things are set to 0 value, even though they may be valuable. In Skyrim you have a much larger inventory than ESO, which is very small especially considering the wide range and number of things you need to collect. The skill tree in Skyrim was the best feature of the game, but in ESO it is gone. Groups do not work like those in any other MMORPG and not for the better. Some quests are so crowded with participants that you can complete them just by standing around. ESO go play a good game like Neverwitner on-line and make some major changes please. Expand

You will read very disappointing reviews/opinions about ESO, the funny thing is that most negative reviews are not from persons that are currently playing the game(!). I have read reviews from persons that have tried this game only in very early beta. I have read reviews from persons that gave this game 0/10 just because is not F2P and i have read reviews from persons that never ever played another mmo, but have the gall to give negative score to ESO only from the videos they have seen in YouTube(!)

My advice, read carefully reviews and pay zero attention to those that come from people that didn't even scratch the magic of this game.

I was pleasantly surprised by this game, it manages to keep the exploration elements from the single player series while mixing the social aspects from other MMOs. The RvR combat is the best I've seen since DAoC. One of the first MMOs that I feel has broken away from the "static themepark" feel that's been so obvious in this genre since WoW came out.

Generic quests, boring combat, familiar control mechanics. I played the Beta and loved it now with the full game I love it even more. It feels like skyrim, balanced and ironed out for multiplayer focus. Not everything is the exact same, you dont kill enemies and loot the exact armor they are wearing and there is barely any ammunition like soul gems and arrows. This is more balanced and requires more effort going through quests you will find things coming together: leveling, armor, weapons. Its not pick up and go like skyrim its more progress then pick up and go. The combat is just like skyrim no more boring watch you and the enemy fight while using a skill in mid combat. Grouping with others is even more fun, its a friendly and relaxing atmosphere this is one of the first online focused games i could see myself playing for over a year. Not everything is satisfying some things you will miss from skyrim like the persistent world with incredible AI where anything could happen, player housing, easier loot, etc. This feels so much like elder scrolls and it is similar to games like wow or guild wars 2. The quests feel more like elder scroll quests than generic mmo quests. There's so much more I could write but trust me this a fantastic mmo so far. I only worry about the end game which was big problem for GW2. But if you accept this game for what it is, It's a real treat for Elder scrolls fans who want to play with other fans, make guilds, adventuring off. Its very satisfying but there are flaws here and there like factions being seperated across the map. But this was the best mmo i ever played and I look forward to playing more of it throughout the year. Expand

At least SWTOR had a lot more variety quest wise. One problem this game suffers from like SWTOR did was having these giant open environments with little to fill these spaces. Also, the chat system is not very polished as well as a few common aesthetics that other MMORPGs have down well. It seems this game like many new MMORPGs that are being released now are being being developed by developers who pump too much focus and money into a fully voiced game with top-notch voice acting versus focusing on actual playable content and features. World of Warcraft didn't get its lasting appeal because of its voice acting (which is very minimal compared to these other MMORPGs nowadays). WoW's lasting appeal stems from its wide variety of features, world spaces filled with creatures, items and details, less restrictive environmental exploration, and good community activities even when it began and had no expansions. The combat is alright and is much like a cross between TESIII Morrowind mixed with Oblivion with a typical "select your special moves" element. Overall, this game does not warrant its $59.99 price tag and its $15 monthly fee. Expand

First off I must say that the people hating on this game probably only played the beta's. I played during beta and it almost made me want to not get this game, and after being burnt by Final Fantasy 14:A Realm Reborn (A True WoW Clone), I was reluctant to try it again. I am so glad I did. Huge open zones that can be explored, tons of quests, hidden items, probably the best crafting system I have ever seen in an MMO (Simple but deep), so much customization you can create almost any character you want (would have liked more hair options). I have put in around 40 hours since early access and I'm only level 16 haven't gotten to zone 3, and haven't even touched PVP yet. I love that I don't need 6 hotbars for all my skills. I Personally chose 5 skills 1 ultimate and have just been upgrading them. There are hundreds of skills and you can swap them out but for me it was easier to just choose a few i like and morph them. Morphing abilities makes them stronger unlike other mmos where you get a new ability and previous ones become obsolete. The combat is very nicely done. You can dodge Aoe's, attack, block, stun and even do group synergy attacks which is just awesome. Love getting together with a group and killing the world monsters or helping out when chains come down from the sky. I wish I could stop talking about how awesome this game is but I can't. And the bugs oh yes the bugs, still one of the smoothest launches I have ever been a part of and they are getting things done quick, On 1st day of early access there was a quest that was bugged and I couldn't turn it in, well I went to work and came back 4 hours later to it being fixed and I could turn it in. And the gold spammer omg in FF14 ARR The spammers would create accounts faster than you could block them. In this game I blocked 3 spammers the first day 3 spammers the second day and I have yet to see one since launch. I'm sure they are around but I have not heard a gold spammer in the past 20 hours of gaming. No other MMO can say that. Are there bugs YES! are they getting fixed faster than any other MMO ont he market? You bet your sweet ass. Will there be more? I don't doubt it. Will those be fixed to? I guarantee it. So long as the cheap bastards who don't want to pay for a quality game and are fine with being blocked from content go back to their F2P MMOS and stay away from this one I will be happy. Im gonna give two reviews/scores for the game with a decent explanation as to why I gave them that

If your from the tes Crowd (below this paragraph or so is the mmo side score)

The game without emotionally weighting it as a fan its about a 6 its not horrible if you come from that crowd but it certaintly isn't what you're looking for and I just cant recommend the game if you come from that crowd.

    Reasons why:
1.Its multiplayer players just get in the way of everything and its not something youd welcome in a single player game from the mmo crowd its like Eh whatever seen it before anyways but when you come in expecting a single player game and a swarm of players kill the boss right in front of you sometimes so fast you didn't even realize it was a boss it just frankly ruins most of the single player joy there is.
2.The story isn't up to par with the single player tes games I mean its not bad and some of them are frankly kind of good but a good amount of them are cut off awkwardly and cant really explain it but if you compared it to Elder scrolls skyrim/oblivion it just transitions awkwardly between events.

    For the mmo crowd
Its about an 8 theres a ton of content to go through and most of its pretty enjoyable I for one enjoy the combat system its got its own feel and I kinda like it anyways Eso brings back public dungeons theres some good and some bad to this the good is it captures a bit of that exploration feel and gotta say while the early lvl ones aren't great (mostly because they get mowd down because of other players) as you move on its actually pretty fun to go through them I typed out some more organized thoughts below.

Youl probably like this game for the most part reasons why.
1.Dungeons- they are all in my opinion very well done even some of the public ones theres just so much content to go through as your leveling and some times they even have there own mini stories which are decent/ok.
2.Overworld pve. Eso's overworld pve content and zones which I have few gripes about most of which revolve around phasing but that doesn't get too much into the way atleast for me that is but anyways moving on when your out exploring youl find some pretty good group content/challenges these are most of the time reffered to as bandit camps which offer little bosses to fight meant for small groups but the earliest ones can be soloed if your smart anyways the bosses are challenging and really add to the game
3.This might contradict a previous statement as to why I said I don't recommend this game to the tes crowd which is story. To be honest the stories aren't horrible some of them are actually pretty nice and if you slow down take your time and just enjoy they are actually pretty fun. Oh and to top it off most of them end in instanced boss fights which most of the time are really fun to fight a lot of times they are decently challenging not so much for the early lvl ones but as you move forward they get better and more unique
    4. Crafting this is a short one crafting in eso has so much options basically every piece of armor/weapon you make you give it a style glyph trait, stat bonus and if you go out in the wilderness there are special crafting stations you can use. To top it off you can craft items into the "legendary status" essentially making the best gear available.

By static I mean it does not give me anything unexpected. By all intensive purposes it's a generic MMO. Creatures do not attack unless very close or you attack first which I find very boring, there are NO dynamic random encounters, all characters are placed and stay there to an effect, questing is meaningless and crafting is a overly complicated and long winded affair.

The reason I love Eldar Scrolls games is it dynamic nature, you don't know what to expect. This game has not surprised me once yet!

As per normal MMO, players run around as fast as they can running errands to level up. For this is the only respectable way to level and for that very reason, people don't give a poo about what the quest actually is. Why change an already great system that the past 5 games had in place? Leveling came naturally as you explore and have random encounters. Questing was an optional and it was fun, you actually listened to the dialog and cared about the quest itself.

As with pretty well ALL other MMO's, it takes hundreds of hours to reach max level. This is my biggest GRIPE. For me it is not realistically achievable. I'm an older gamer and spending that much time to reach the "end" game is crazy and I think poorly designed. I'll most likely never experience what it's like to "finish" the game and see my character at his/her peak strength. I'd love to see and MMO where you can get to max level after 50 hours, therefore rewarding players sooner.

The good points - Great graphics, fantastic character and skill development, a hug expansive world with plenty to see and do and decent pvp.

I'll most likely enjoy it for a while but not subscribe and not play the obscene amount of hours to reach end game.
