The game rewards the creation of the character in a way that is planned to succeed. For example, an orc that tries to be a pure mage will inevitably fail by level 20 for lack of magicka and levels, but a high elf will succeed. Oblivion makes the decisions while creating and levelling your character determine their ability after to succeed after levelling. Someone very good can make their character improve after levelling up compared to their surroundings if they do everything correctly. Otherwise, they have to compensate with skill in battle. I have spent hundreds of hours perfecting characters and maximizing efficiency and moving through the game at a normal pace allows this to still be achieved by the smart. Expand

I wouldnt play it without mods: The level up system is so stupid, if you want to play it somehow effectively: the attribute condition is important and to raise it, you need to use 3 skills: armour, heavy armour and block...as a mage? In addition you need to take care, which skills you use to control the bonuses you get at level up. It is killing a lot of fun, but there is a mod that changes the XP system. There is another point with the key word leveling...everyone knows and only few understand that stupid system, where every mob is leveling with the character, so it means you re fighting with lvl 5 against a skeleton and it is a hard fight, later on you are lvl 40 and you will have another hard fight against a skeleton -> LOL. Maybe Bethesda is simply to lazy to implement a better system.
Technically this game is a nightmare: still so many bugs, although it is so old. It is so obvious, that Bethesda / Zenimax simply dont care about it and know, that users will work for them. In addition this game works so bad with new computers, it is like they convert it from console to PC and dont care about the possibilities with PCs. !"%$%$"§&/()&$§" I needed so much time and needed to install the mods for this game so often, it was frustrating. And yes, dont play this game without mods.
Controling and Interface...download mods ! so frustrating without.
Sound: Yes, there are few voice actors, yes they are even changing with the same NPC (wtf?) and what I dislike, they have such a strong american accent. I cant hear it anymore. Music is very good great.

What is good? Yes, The Elder Scrolls again, this means: a free free free world :) A lot of discoveries, hidden content, very good immersion. Like in Morrowind and Fallout 3, Bethesda is simply the master in it.
NPCs have finally a life, in Morrowind they ve been a bit static. In the woods you see NPCs hunting animals, mobs fighting and so on. Bethesda learned from a little weakness in Morrowind and put life in the world.
I like the story and the quests, the beginning is very nice. But on the other side the quests could have more possibilities and ways to solve, especially the dialogs are so linear. Look at Neverwinter Nights or Baldurs Gate.

Overall: 10 points? 9 points? never, this game humiliates us players. 8 is a maximum. If you survive the pain of modding the game, it gets 10/10.

I must say that this is another one of my all time favorites, the lore sucked me right in and I've been an Elder Scrolls fan/nerd ever since, reading every bit of information available anywhere about Tamriel. The graphics were outstanding for the time and Cyrodill was beautiful with its diverse cities and fantasy landscapes.
There are a couple of things that need to be scrutinized though.

There are a couple of things that need to be scrutinized though. For one, the main quest wasn't that entertaining and constantly closing Oblivion gates got old fast, it was also quite invasive, you were basically forced into the main quest right from the start. Another thing that needs to be mentioned is the auto-scaling system. Oh damn, those bandits are too strong for me, I'll just come back later after I level up a bit. What's this? How did they all get glass armor and higher level? And I'm dead again. Terrible game mechanic. Otherwise fantastic game everyone should atleast give a shot.

Compared to that, it's true that Oblivion felt quite a bit weaker, locations were a bit too monotonous, the interface a bit too consolized, faces terribly ugly, voice acting over repeated to death, game mechanics simplified and to my taste it all felt a bit too much like a kiddie fairytale sometimes. BUT... Oblivion was still capable to do what all the TES chapters do so well, immerse you in the world, make you forget the real one and let you enjoy the fantasy experience for hundreds of hours. While I wasn't a big fan of the leveling system where the enemies were leveling up along with you, it kept the challenge on par until the very end, also the economics and money seemed to be the best balanced from TES series, meaning you won't usually become a millionaire in a few days, but most importantly, Oblivion had imo arguably the best quest lines in TES series and that's a huge plus. Yes, the main quest with oblivion gates was terribly annoying and it made me skip it and run through them eventually, but the Mages Guild quests, Thieves Guild and especially Dark Brotherhood were just fantastic. This was also the first TES game where I was fully enjoying myself as a vampire. DLC's were ok, Knights Of The Nine being a nice big quest nicely implemented into the main game and Shivering Isles providing you the experience of something a bit different and a bit trippy. While I can't go for the full score here because of the shortcomings, Oblivion is still an excellent game and it would be a big mistake to miss out on this. 9/10 Expand

I loved this masterpiece and it introduced me to the Elder Scrolls, like it was godlike.
The thing I loved the most was the grand arena as it was fun and a little challenging.
And The thing that made me laugh and a little annoyed was "the annoying fan" who followed you everywhere you went.
But I also loved being a vampire, and the mods.
If you want to try the Elder Scrolls, I would strongly recommend trying this masterpiece as an introduction.

TL; DR: Main story sucks hard, everything else makes up for it.

    Cons:
The main story BLOWS. I mean it is awful, awful. I literally play enough to get the free horse and do everything else. And once you start, the oblivion gates just keep piling up and piling up, which would be fine if there was any variety to them, but there isn't. They do have good loot though...

Loot: meh. I love loot. love it, love it, love it. It isn't in this game.

Fighting: pretty much point and click, click, click, click. Not much brain used here.

    Pros:
    Music: amazing!

Fighting: wah? you just said it was bad. Yes, unless using a bow. The bow actually takes into account gravity and distance!!!

Quests: super fun, except for the main one. Daedric quests are the best, oh those funny meddling gods!

Atmosphere/graphics: for the time pretty good. The immersion level is fantastic.

NPCs: most amazing part of this game. Every single NPC you see has their own unique routine. Every freakin' one. Yes, they have similar voices, but come on, for the time this was unheard of. It is this factor that truly makes this game a total immersion.

Guilds: Love 'em. There is a guild for everyone: fighting, magic, murder, mayhem. The world is your oyster!

Monsters: i've read a few reviews and this is a sore spot. People are angry monsters level with you. How is this even an isssue???? Why play a game if it is super easy and you can just run around and one shot things? Go play Wii cooking games if this is a problem for you. Seriously. There is a Barbie game for that console too I think. Go, have fun.

Play this game, especially if you liked either Skyrim or Morrowind. The three build on each other so well.

Oblivion is the first experience that I finish in terms of the Elder Scrolls series, which is why I have several things to emphasize, and that is a game with a fairly good magnitude, both in options when it comes to personalizing our character, as well as a good portion of explorable territory with hundreds of side missions. You might think it's a complete game in all its facets, but it's not like that. In terms of history, although the game invites you to enter your world, it does not end correctly, as this is quite cliche with too many pretentious monologues, literally a festival of nerd terminologies that eventually There is a difference between choosing one or another race, even at the sound level it ends up looking like a copy-paste of any medieval film. Technically the game is up to what was expected at the time and although it has aged quite badly, it is still quite satisfactory at its maximum power, as well as the control that is very good.

The strength of this game is without a doubt the re-playability offered by its secondary missions, since despite being repetitive does not mean that it is not good, on the contrary, they are sufficiently addictive to keep you stuck for quite some time. 8.3/10

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After completing the first story quest, I immediately skipped to the place where the second one was in order to realize that I had absolutely no chance against the enemies present in the Demon Gate. The game wanted me to endlessly grind and level up in order to be able to progress further.

So, I decided to try some quests. One got my interest, in which a guy got robbed by some ladies while having "fun" with them. To my surprise, when I got to their hidden cottage, no one came and I got locked inside with no other way of getting out. I found out that it was a bug, so I tried this quest several other times and the girls remained at their original place - in the city. After killing them, the quest didn't progress, because they weren't in the location they were supposed to be in. How lame.

To sum it up, when the first quest in the game you try is so bugged that it cannot even be completed - that says something about the overall quality of the game. If only I could follow the storyline without having to complete buggy quests beforehand ...

Magic specialties are now actually playable, and magic is even deeper and funnier to use. The dialog experience is better, as NPCs have their own personalities now. The quests became more dynamic, complex, and interactive. NPCs are no longer static, they have their behaviors and can interact with each other. Oblivion allows better modifications, with custom scripting and animations.
Annoying Morrowind aspects like mod conflicts and incompatible localized versions are gone. Each mod exists in its own namespace now.
The negative aspects of the game are badly made mob scaling making them undesirably difficult and limited face customization available by default. The voice acting budget looks significantly cut, and you can hear same actors spanning several races.

Oblivion got the best guild and side quests in all of the Elder scrolls series and Dark Brotherhood questline is probably one of the best in all RPGs period. But stupid level scaling of enemies takes a lot of fun the gameplay. Visuals looked amazing when it came out, not so much now.

The dialogue system is a little wonky(some find the camera angle unsettling and immersion-shattering, though I had no such issue), and combat can be deceptively simple(for the most part, a good sword and shield will carry you through the game if you're combat-oriented), but even these nitpicks cannot detract from what is a true fantasy experience that cannot be matched.

Graphics dont age well, The AI are a tad.. dumb, the voice acting can sometimes be off, but the RPG elements, story, and lure make up for those take-aways completely. This is a game that brings you in and lets you experience its fantastically crafted world without resistance or restraint. Its interesting, its inviting, and its definitely fun. I really dont know what more i could ask.

The main story is enthralling and brilliantly voice acted while stilling having a wealth of different options for a more free form role playing experience.
I would also suggest picking up the expansions, especially Shivering Isles as I think it is probably one of the best additional content I have ever played in a game. Overall 10/10 and would recommend to anyone, even those that aren't into video games in general

This score is a bit of an aggregate.
In its vanilla form, I'd give Oblivion a 5/10. However, once you add in mods that revamp the console-ported UI, address the atrocious level scaling issues, remove the constant hand holding popup messages, and deal with the hideous potato heads... the game becomes rather good, and deserves something like an 8.5/10.

Even though the main quest is... lacking... it probably has the best faction and miscellaneous quests in the series, and with some good visual mods, exploring the countryside is a beautiful experience. Moreover, once you've managed to explore everything the base game has to offer... Shivering Isles is probably the best expansion I've ever seen in the series, and beyond that, there are numerous excellent quest mods.

In sum, I like the 'modern, modded version' of Oblivion MUCH more than the vanilla version that was released in 2006, and I'd happily recommend it to anyone, with the caveat that it needs mods to truly shine.

    2. Melee combat is fine (but could be better, if not that freaking amount of enemy HP on high levels), the same goes for magic (not actually played with it that much, just some more common stuff like Destruction and Restoration) and bows (great damage, when playing as a sneaky boy AKA thief), overall - not that bad, especially after the Morrowind combat. And I LOVE, how faster and more responsive it is in comparison with the Skyrim combat.

    3. Main quest is just boring, not really that stupid, but more... repetitive. But the side quests and guilds on the other hand are G R E A T, the best in the series IMO. Shivering Isles DLC is a fresh air, it contrasts from the main game really well and gives you the whole new, bizarre world to engage yourself in. Never touched the second one major DLC, Knights of the Nine, have no idea if it's a good or a bad one.

And, in the first glance, my score should be at least 8 or higher, HOWEVER!
    - Those BORING, COPYPASTED dungeons are A LARGE AND SMELLING ROCK OF GARBAGE. I HATE those lazy made caves with useless loot and no personality whatsoever, HATE those Oblivion gates with the same 6-7 worlds, HATE forts and even HATE (but not that hard, maybe) those ayleid ruins.
    - You can feel, that the world is mostly generated. Outside of miserable dungeons there is nothing to do here - just beat some stupid bandits with monsters, look at different biomes and just use fast travel to save yourself some time.
    - Levelling. Oh. My. God. It is just broken and contrintuitive, even grindish in some places.

When the RPG with open WORLD, where most of the time you are fighting, doing some quests and clearing DUNGEONS fails with some of the key elements of the genre - this is definitely a core game design problem. On the other hand, side quests and SI DLC are well made - you just have to make it through objective flaws of the gameplay to make fun of this part of Oblivion.

Oh the graphics, they were so great. Main story was at times a bit repetitive, but some of the sideline quests (esp. thieves guild and the dark brotherhood) were amazing. Bugs were not really annoying, just funny. A great game, perhaps the best elder scrolls in my opinion. Playing it today in 2019, it feels very, very dated, but that wont affect my review.

After reading many reviews about Oblivion and its expansion, I took courage and I decided to buy the game. Many people said that the Oblivion was the best version of the Elder Scrolls.

So here I am to analyze the game. So I'll do a simple analyze and thinking at the time it was released.

In my opinion, according to the time It was released, it must have being one of the best game! In 2006 there was not game like that. The history is simple, the map is big and there is a great quantity of character that can be customized. Also, There's a variety of side quest. I confess that I focused in main quest and I finished it with 20 hours.

Despite of the game have being release 16 years ago, there are two defects that prejudice the gameplay :

I consider the map horrible: it is not possible to see the whole map, you must have to move the regions with the mouse and you can not maximize the map.

Sometimes the game closes down suddenly. How it is an old game, you can just launch the game quickly, but it is boring. It did not happen many times.

I can not say that game physics is a defect, but over the time I played games with wonderful graphics and physics. So, I advise who wants to play The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion with opened mind.

Comparing Oblivion and Skyrim, In my opinion, Skyrim is absurdly better in all aspects: graphics, history, gameplay, physics, character customization, immersion and so on, but considering the time Oblivion was released I guess it was more innovative game.

Oyunu daha çok sevmek isterdim. Aynı şeyi Fallout New Vegas'ta da yaşamıştım.

Yes it can be a buggy mess at times as with every Bethesda game but this one has a special atmosphere about it that makes the world feel special. That was mmy go to when I found my old PC couldn't run Skyrim back in the day. Freaking great game! Some side quests here really blown my mind, and every time I think about Oblivion I get sad for the fact that many games today abuse repetitiveness to pretend they have a lot of content.

THis game sucks ass... The only reason people like it must be nostalgia because the levelling system, a major part of any RPG. is utter garbage and makes you become weaker relatively speaking. The combat sucks and the only saving grace is some funny dialogues between NPCs.

    Aged horribly..

Skyrim is cool and all, but oblivion was the real **** Played this game so much, first on ps3, later on pc. even hosted a d&d campaign based on the starting area.

Soooo, this game is really well made, soo much time spent on this. Probably the BEST QUESTS of all games are in THIS game. especially assassins guild.
One minus in difficulty settings. It's not balanced at all. Better play on normal.

Better than Skyrim, equal to Morrowind. Buy it, and all the DLCs too. Have Fun!

This game is so damn awful. The combat is terrible, enemies are overpowered even if playing on super easy, the quests are so blank or straight up impossible. Best for last, THE LOCKPICKING. Its so **** tedious, causing you to loose everytime because theres no indication wherever you are doing it right or not. We have got to a point where lockpicking virtually is harder than in real life and im NOT kidding here.

Great atmosphere and story. I like the expansion: Shivering Isles. The battle system is improved compared to Morrowind. Lot of game mechanics are simplified. However, the character artstyle is weird and the leveling system is simply worse. Some NPCs are hilarious and provided great meme material.

The first feeling when I set my foot into the dungeons of the imperial city, was amazing. It was like nothing I had ever seen in RPG game at that point. It's an incredible game for it's time. And I probably say "for it's time" a lot in my reviews, but that is because it has to be taken into account. Today I probably wouldn't be bothered playing Oblivion - like most Elder Scrolls games, for me, they have always felt to shallow with the AI of the NPC:s being very bad.
But at the time, everything from the graphics, to the first person view, the talent trees, the mystery, world and story was beyond amazing and I will treasure that nostalgia forever. It also had one of the best soundtracks ever, like Skyrim. The sad calm music of Jeremy Soule. Really amazing.
Just like Dragon Age, Might And Magic 7 and Neverwinter Nights, Oblivion really contributed to my love of RPG:s.

If you have never played it, I say give it a go. Especially if you love open world games. It's a classic in it's own right.

I only give this game a 9 out of 10 because time has taken its toll on it, and newcomers may find it hard to look past the dated graphics and mechanics. Besides that, Oblivion was a groundbreaking title for its time, and the pure joy I got from playing it as a young child when it came out was something that I would never let go of in a million years. Oblivion has such a unique charm and feel to it that I can't help but feel like newer RPGs are lacking. If you're an Elder Scrolls fan, Fallout fan, or a fantasy RPG fan, I highly recommend giving Oblivion a try. It may take some getting used to the older feel of the game, but once you get into it you will recognize how delightful the game really is. Expand

“How goes it?” “I’ve been better. How about you?” “I’ve been better.” “I hope things get better.” “Goodbye.” “You too.” This is why The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is the greatest video game of all time.

  1. It’s just so damned big. That’s what you’ll say after playing Oblivion for more than an hour. Or, for that matter, 50 hours.
  2. Oblivion is by far the closest I have come to playing D&D Sunday afternoons with my friends (yes, I did that, though I’m on medication now), all wrapped up in a stunning package with tens of thousands of lines of spoken dialog and good music.
  3. 100
I honestly have to say that I am in favour of most of the changes and I think Oblivion is an awesome achievement from Bethesda.
