15 hours until you get to the main part of the main quest? That's not impressive, that's just poor game design. Vague instructions and directions as to where to go, piss poor combat that leaves you swinging your weapon more minutes at a time before you hit anything, so on. Trying to get some info from a NPC? One of the best classic role-playing games to date. There is so much to do and explore; you may die a lot but you’ll learn a ton throughout your enormous adventure. You'll feel lonely at times until you find a naked barbarian looking for his magical Axe.

Morrowind may not be for everyone, it is an entirely different beast from other mammoths in the franchise such as TES IV: Oblivion and TES V: Skyrim but being different doesn't mean the game is bad in any way. Mechanics work differently, you'll have to use your wit to overcome challenging situations. Some mechanics may seem broken at first, but there are often techniques which you must master in order to get anywhere which is part of solving the wondrous mystery which is Morrowind. It’s not a mindless RPG like many modern games, it’s a true RPG, one which you’ll remember for a very long time.

An adventure huge in scale; it may not be perfect (what game is), the adventures you will go on and mysteries you will solve will leave you in awe if you can overcome some of the technical limitations Morrowind has to date. Do not be put off though if you are looking for an alien yet timeless journey which you can stick your teeth into for hundreds of countless hours! To top it off, this is coming from somebody who hated Morrowind to begin with. Don’t give up, take your time and most of all enjoy yourself, you’ll overcome many of the problem’s you encounter.

    A few warnings starting out:
    - It can be overwhelming and unclear where to go and what to do, so find an online guide. The game is dated and there are no way-points. Fast travel is available from certain NPCs, and is very useful.
    - Movement is EXTREMELY slow at first. The best fix for this is an item called boots of blinding speed. Luckily, you can get them early. Leveling acrobatics and athletics skills will help a lot.
    - The game starts out slow. Leveling from 1-2 took several hours. It took about 15 hours for it to stop being slow, but once it gets rolling, it is an extraordinary game. Stick with it!
    - Use mods to remove bugs.

Bought for $7.50, played 171 hours, highly recommended.

Morrowind puts you in the roll of a Prisoner as they reach Seyda Neen and attempt to start their new life. You are given a blank slate; a way to reforge your new life whether it's a murderous assassin or honorable paladin, the only limited parts to Morrowind is your imagination.

Morrowind isn't like typical RPGs where you pick a role and are limited based on that role (Fighter, Cleric, etc). Morrowind allows you the freedom to be whatever you wish. During is time, Morrowind pushed even the most powerful hardware and to this day looks alien and mysterious. Morrowind continues to live on through the efforts of talented modders and fans alike.

It is my opinion that Morrowind catches all magic and depth of every Elder Scrolls title and is the best Elder Scrolls title yet.

You just get shat out into this MASSIVE, hostile world. There is no tutorial or direction whatsoever. Many people seem to enjoy this, but I don't. As someone else wrote, the presentation just does not seem thought out at all. Right from the start you can read dozes of books (which are WAY too long-winded), buy hundreds of spells and items, go anywhere you want, and talk to anyone you want (which doesn't matter that much because pretty much all the NPCs seem to hate you). Sounds like the ultimate freedom, right? But you are not being given any kind of reference system for what is important or beneficial, which just made me feel totally lost.

The whole world is almost entirely grey and brown and filled with hostile characters and weird, disgusting bugs. How anyone could call this beautiful is completely beyond me. Just take the capital for example. It is impossible not to get lost here because everything just looks the same (and not very appealing at that).

This game lacks character and soul. I'll still give it two points for its massive scope. But it is not fun and completely devoid of charm.

The setting is strange, alien, but rich with content and depth. The aforementioned combat, while broken and terrible, offers a lot of options and can even start to be fun. The characters aren't totally memorable, but we all have our favourites - and we all weep when the time comes to say goodbye to Caius Cosades. The quests are clever, usually with many options for completion, and the main questline is surprisingly engaging for an Elder Scrolls game (I only know one person who ever finished Skyrim's main quest, and you probably do too) and the methods of storytelling - with unreliable, conflicting narrators - make the world feel more alive than it has any right to be, with everyone looking like paper-craft dolls hung on wire frames.

Morrowind looks, and plays, like garbage - even at the time, it was janky - but don't let that deter you from experiencing one of the most unique and memorable fantasy worlds in gaming. After all, it's part of the fun.

Understandably, it's a defining release in open world RPG gaming with excellent music and great graphics for the time, but I found it difficult to get into this game without the nostalgic sentiment that probably drives many other players in the realm of Morrowind. My biggest critiques: 1) walking everywhere takes forever (this issue is fixed wonderfully in the sequel, Oblivion, with fast travel, horses, and a more condensed map), 2) many of the quests are extremely repetitive and involve tortuously long walks to various locations. The map is epic and huge, which is awesome, unless it takes forever to walk everywhere, which is the case. You can ride to and from major cities via the silt strider network, but I found myself still having to walk for 5, 10, even 15 or more real-time minutes just to get to a location for a quest after riding to the nearest city via silt strider. Due to the repetitiveness of many of the quests, you'll have to walk the same long path several times before you complete the quest. I really felt like 60% of my play-through of the main quest and side quests was just walking slowly through the map. That being said, I appreciate Morrowind as a great foundation for it's sequels, Oblivion and Skyrim, some of the best games the RPG genre has ever seen. Expand

I played Morrowind after I had already played Oblivion. The graphics are outdated but the scale of the game makes up for this fault by offering the player lots of side quests, lots to visit and see and a wide range of weapons, armour, spells and abilities.

Competes with Fallout 2 as the greatest RPG you can play on your own Personal Computer. While Daggerfall definitely had it in on the dialogue side of things, Morrowind expands on that with more gameplay functionality and thematic immersion. Pros.:
    - Interesting story. It has many details, names, characters. And the twist that the protagonist is becoming the prophetic figure. For the time, it was a very smart decision to justify why the protagonist is cool, getting stronger and finally fights the antagonist.
    - The world. It looks dull and boring. But Morrowind has interesting backstory, many characters for interaction, nice locations.
    - There is a variety of paths to play the game. Also, Tribunal may be interesting as well as Bloodmoon. They expand the story.
    - Main theme is legendary.
    - Memes based on the game are awesome.

Basically, the coolest thing of the game is the story and world building.

    Cons.:
    - The game is VERY outdated. The pace is slow, too much grind, the game literally forces you to grind, finish many alternative quest lines to actually do something in the main one. The Fifth and Fourth trials are trash - all that running around with stupid quests and begging to be named Nerevarin...
    - Upgrading and lvl systems are trash too - you start the game jumping all the time to boost the skill. You have an alternative of training but it is costly. Need more money from the quests. Main quest line money making is unreasonably low. So, you HAVE to go around and finish as much as you can do.
    - No fast travel. People tell - you need to explore the island. Screw the island - the huge chunk of it is just dusty, ugly ashlands. Bethesda did right when switched to fast travel (that I highly criticized for years).
    - Too many boring quests. Dumb bring-take.
    - The character is very slow regardless of your 100 speed.

There are more cons. The game is just outdated with its expansions. Better to play Skywind (when and if it's released) which should be adapted for modern standards. This game is AWESOME and it WAS awesome. But its time passed long time ago. And for those, who remember playing it being 14-16 - too late guys. Cant waste that much time for the game.

Both one of Bethesda's only good in house releases and also amongst the worst to play. I'm going to be real here, for the time, Morrowind was incredible. In 2002 and for years after that it was amongst the best RPG's out there. But in 2022, as more and more RPG's come out with better and better mechanics, Morrowind begins to show it's flaws.

Combat: Unintuitive at first. And that's what gets me the most. Elder scrolls games are full of combat. Your attacks are based on movement, which sounds good, right? If only. Granted, given enough time you will get used to it, and when you do, it's good! But you will fight the mechanics as much as you fight your foes. You will die. A lot. Time and time again as you grow more and more used to how this horribly jank combat system works. Your sword will pass right through foes, as the dice roll the game uses to calculate attacks hitting does not count if the weapon you use actually touches the thing you're fighting. Fans of the game pride Morrowind for being brutal and not holding your hand, but difficulty alone does not make a good game. Morrowind misses that memo, time and time again.

Movement: No. Please. You move at a snail's pace, and your sprint is not much quicker. This forces you to slow down, look around, take the world in. This wouldn't be a problem if the world were anything worth looking at.

Graphics: For a game from 2002, it could be worse, but this needs to be said. Morrowind is a mess of jagged polygons and low resolution textures, made all the more frustrating by the simply incredible aesthetic design. The world is both grating and wondrous to look at, befitting the game itself. It simultaneously makes you want to vomit and gives you headaches, as much as it makes you marvel at how they accomplished this in 2002 and makes you yearn for a perspective not already seeded with modern day graphics.

Story: Blows the story of both Oblivion and Skyrim out of the water. I have nothing wrong to say about the base lore of Morrowind itself, though it irks me that a studio capable of making such a great storyline managed to also release the storyline in Skyrim, an incompetent mess.

Replayability: Tons. If only I wanted to actually play this game ever again. There's so much to do, so much to see. If only they pulled some effort away from the quest design to tune up the combat and base mechanics, for if the team that worked on the quests worked on that, chances are I wouldn't be here, frustrated with how people find this game so good.

It is a basically unplayable mess, you move so slowly that is totally shatters any immersion or fun. The writing, unironically, is some of the worst I have seen in a long time. It is just flat dialogue with no flavour, and reads more like wikipedia articles than actual human speech. This is very damaging to immersion in the world and care for the characters, which can be explained in this quote from Bahktin, "dialogue is the single adequate form for verbally expressing authentic human life, in it, a person participates wholly and throughout his whole life: with his eyes, lips, hands, soul, spirit, with his whole body and deeds. He invests into the dialogue fabric of human life, into the world symposium", this quote is very true, for dialogue is the ultimate in self-expression of one's identity, ideals, and convictions. Therefore, poorly written dialogue can be greatly damaging to the quality and relatability of the characters involved, and, as a result, the story as a whole. It is just bad and lack any sense of connection one can feel with the world. And the lore is made extremely dull for a lack of releveance, mixed in with it being poorly written to begin with. Gameplay is dull and boring, both having dull and immersion breaking movement speed, the UI being clunky, ugly, and hard to actually use. The graphics were dreadful even for its time. Looks like its from mid-Nineties. It is simply slashing and hoping you actually manage to hit. And dying many a time do to how the game is not based on skill, but pure luck, and nothing else. You win through being lucky and having good items, not through any form of skill or strategy like many I have seen claim it to be. It is also extremely unoriginal in its lore. With basically no original ideas at all. Not even an original way of implementing ideas, it is just, dull and lifeless. Taken from far better and more interesting works. Tonal Magic, Elves, Dwarves, the structure of Tamriel-Oblivion-Aetherius is just Ea-Void-Timeless Halls, from Tolkien. Dark Elves from DnD, it is just, every single feature of it, even those that seem unique, were directly ripped from somewhere else. Without even an attempt to make it new or unique. The lore also very rarely ties into the world you see, and it only does Telling, amd actively avoids Showing, when one should do more showing than telling, to paraphrase Anton Chekov, "don't tell me the moon is shining, show me the glint of light in broke glass", or as said by Ernest Hemingway, "If a writer of prose knows enough of what he is writing about, he may omit things that he knows ans the reader, if the writer is writing truly enough, will have a feeling of those things as strongly as though the writer had stated them. The dignity of movement of an iceberg is due ti only one-eighth of it being above water", that is to say, it is mot only unnecessary to explain everything, but it also is poor writing to do big swathes of exposition, instead of respecting the player/reader enough to *show* them that information through various aspects. And being able to see the effects of lore, tends to make it less of a bore, and also increases retention od the information shared. And it has no Osttaneiniye, it doesn't five you a different way to view the world you see. Nor does it give one a better understanding of the events. All it does it just say a random assortment of poorly thought out ideas which it gives us no reason to care about. It simply expects people to inherently care about distant, and irrelevant events or peoples that you do not ever see come to relevance or tie into the world you experience. It is also communicated in a way that purposely obsfucates what it is trying to say, attempting to mimick the poetic style of religious texts, without actually understanding the process behind said style, and the way in which it still manages to communicate information effectively. Those who talk about how good the writing is are speaking utter bushwah, and need to actually read novels to see how the writing is actually below average, and barely functions. But this is atound all I can say jn this post. I do not hate people for liking the game, I just hate the game and am annoyed at how it is praised as a masterpiece of writing, when the writing is deeply and fundamentally flawed and poorly done; and the gameplay and graphics are also atrocious, thus cannot save its bad writing. Skyrim was a game like no other and I thought nothing would beat it as my favorite in the series. So after finishing Skyrim, I began to look for something that's along the same lines as the game. So after finishing Skyrim, I began to look for something that's along the same lines as the game. I got intrigued by the older Elder Scrolls games because of all the praises I've heard and seen from them, especially Morrowind and Oblivion. I decided to play Morrowind first because a ton of people in the fandom objectively thinks that Morrowind has the best story. As a gamer who treasures and regards great storytelling as top priority in video games, it was inevitable for me to begin here, and what a game it was. Story-wise, it's leagues better than Skyrim. Having to talk to NPCs about Morrowind's lore which contributes a ton to Morrowind's phenomenal world-building, and being able to get information about the current state situations of the land has never been this essential in a video game I've personally experienced. The conflicts that transpired the resurrection of evil being on a mission to cleanse its lands of colonials and false gods, and to return the Dunmer race to its former glory. The narrative went deeper and deeper as you progress through the game's long story and it truly fascinated me. It also has surprisingly great dialogue, which was pretty damn weird for Bethesda-developed games because most of the games they make seem to have lackluster dialogue options. The characters were interesting. Caius Cosades stuck with me because of his full display of kindness and respect towards the main character, and he's such a bro. I missed him dearly when he left and returned for Cyrodiil. The main villain, Dagoth Ur, was one hell of a driving force. He's the reawakened evil that wants the best for his Dunmer (Dark Elven) people. All the things he desires seem to suggest that it's for the better, but with all the terrible things he has cast upon his beloved homeland, one of which is by having continuous blight storms that cause people to fall ill and die, or turn into deformed creatures is truly horrible, which throws every convincing reason he uttered from his mouth a lot less believable. The factions had very engaging histories. The Houses being one of the most absorbing factions I've ever witnessed. After saving Morrowind, you definitely feel beloved by the people that inhabit the land because they start to praise and acknowledge you for what you have done for Morrowind, which Skyrim lacked and is one of the main criticisms that the game gets. The gameplay, especially the combat, is quite conflicting. It's great when you know what you're doing, and Morrowind has a much deeper combat and leveling system compared to Skyrim, but it isn't polished and is quite dated. The game mechanics are tough to sell for newer players who want to enjoy Morrowind, which makes the game a lot less accessible and a lot less fun, thus making the players develop the inability to appreciate the full capacity of what the game offers. Morrowind isn't by no means perfect though. One of my problems with this game is how it becomes tedious later on. Some quests dragged on when you don't know where you're going or what you're doing, especially the Hortator and Nerevarine quest in the main questline. Another thing is how vague the NPCs are when pointing out directions, especially if the place is far from the place where you've taken the quest. I've played Zelda games, and despite being very non-linear I knew where I was going and what I'm supposed to do. Maybe because Morrowind is massive as heck compared to Zelda games (excluding BotW), which makes it a lot harder to navigate. I got stuck for hours trying to find the entry to Vemynal alone, not to mention the times where I needed to complete tasks from the Urshilaku camp. With all the things I've wanted to say done, Morrowind has now reached the top of my favorite Bethesda games, and my favorite Elder Scrolls entry in the long-running franchise despite the glaring flaws it has. 9/10, wealth beyond measure outlander! In my opinion, Morrowwind is the best Elder Scrolls title and one of the best CRPGs ever made.
I remember playing this game on my dad's huge work computer back in 2000's. Even when Oblivion got released, i was still hooked to Morrowwind. Morrowind's mushroomy world is probably the most unique among all the Elder Scrolls games. Back in the day, Morrowwind's world felt so huge and varied

Morrowind's mushroomy world is probably the most unique among all the Elder Scrolls games. Back in the day, Morrowwind's world felt so huge and varied because we didn't have fast travel or objective marks; finding secrets on your own and solving mysterious felt more satisfying. Although later titles benefit from triple A voice acting and audio, Morrowwind's dialogs are some of the best i've seen in any RPG ever.
Morrowind's story is weaker than Oblivion and Skyrim but the presentation is done to near-perfection; there's no denying that. Bethesda was able to capture the feel of a decaying world with each detail and soundtrack. Even the opening piece by Jeremy Soule is the best among all the Elder Scrolls titles. I highly recommend playing Morrowwind before going into Oblivion or Skyrim as you can see the basic formula that this game established for all the later bethesda game studios titles.

This game is absolutely the best RPG I ever played. I played the console version 2 times through with different characters and the PC version once through. And STILL have NOT done every quest there is to do. It is a huge open world and the expansions add to it. There is countless replayability, and endless customization for making characters. And even still has a nice graphics engine

When I first played Morrowind I was much more receptive to games than nowadays. So I just fell in love with it and had the greatest gaming experience in my entire life. So much freedom and creativity, brilliant music and artstyle, The story is captivating and deep. As i didn't have internet back then I had to learn all the game mechanics by trial and error method which was fun.

However, as other ES games were released I realized that there are some flaws in the game: too many bugs, easily exploitable game mechanics, too much luck based game mechanics. And I hate cliff racers.

Still this is probably one of the best games ever made.

Однажды Бога попросили создать что-то прекрасное, но он перестарался и так получилась эта игра. Я знаю здесь каждый сантиметр, каждый пиксель и каждую реплику, но при этом всем, я все равно буду ее проходить еще и еще.

The game is ok, but I'm glad I bought it on sale. I was expecting more, considering all the hype. For me it felt flat and lacking, because the races and classes are a little too cosmetic. They are so "open" to crossover, that it doesn't feel there is much difference in choosing one or the other. And then there are so many tweaks you can buy, that characters have no distinctive flair. Which also makes this game a great money pit for players into building mega-characters.
But the deal-breaker for me was that, something about the visuals caused me vertigo. No matter the adjustments I did. Tried switching perspective, reducing head-bob, and just about any other recommended tweak. I couldn't play for more than 45 minutes without getting nausea. The funny thing is that a friend also got vertigo from the game, but playing it in a console (PS). I looked around and vertigo seems to be an issue for some people.
So, no, I wouldn't recommend this game.

Great game. Its just a little outdated. Worst of the 3 modern games because of its combat and Graphics. We are not rating mods. But that is easily fixed with them. As a base game the game is overwhelmingly brown and not pleasing. But the story and the Alien world of Vvardenfell and its great DLCs in Morrowind and Solstheim more than make up for its flaws. Sadly however an 8 out of 10.

    20 years wow.
Its 100% one of the best rpgs made which open a whole new gate for rpg games.
This game deserves a 10 out 10 becuase. 1.story telling : im not going to lie but for somthing writed in 3 weeks its really rich of story and lore. 2.worls design: i think that was the first ever rpg game to use hand made dungeons that were not auto generated like daggerfall which is a real big

2.worls design: i think that was the first ever rpg game to use hand made dungeons that were not auto generated like daggerfall which is a real big upgrade.
    3. The equipments : this game has more weapon types then any other rpg game in its time or maybe now made a real good game for role playing
    4. Races and class: in morrowind you needed to be a master of somthing to be actually use it perfectly. There is a bit flaw in here meaning you cant change your class mid game meaning you have to start over to build a new class. If you wanted to be a mage you had to train your mage skills meaning you couldnt become arch mage just by slashing your enemies.
    5. Enemies: one of the most original and cool enemies you will see in a game.
    6. And the best of all was the freedom, is soon is you are set free you can do anything you want you can go straight up go kill vivec a npc essential to the main quest but who cares like any body can stop you, thats what i call freedom.

I'm sorry to say this, but it's too old a game for me. The gameplay is too dated to play today. If this game is remade, it could be one of my favorite games, but as it is, it's unfortunately unplayable now.

A great RPG with some minor pains like the combat system. Huge world, multitude of quests, items. Equipments, locations. Hundreds of hours of gameplay.

There are secret cults hiding in peoples basements. There are gods standing around in palaces. You can jump 10000 feet into the air within the first five minutes of playing the game. There’s a divine being disguised as a goblin in some random house that you can sell your best gear to. It’s like Elden Ring but for people who read history books for fun. also everyone is super gay. 1. One of those games that just visually takes your breath away. It has some of the most detailed, and well realistically rendered environments and characters ever seen in a computer game.
  2. The Elder Scrolls tech support forum is overflowing with user complaints about compatibility issues. At any rate, this is still the biggest, deepest, most detailed RPG to hit the PC since Daggerfall, and for that, earns high marks.
  3. This is a game that can stay on your hard drive for six months, still offering new experiences.
