I have yet to see a single "movie" game that uses the medium in a way that made it a better experience. It's obvious that you would need a good movie to start with, and that's where almost all of these games fail.

I have yet to see a single "movie" game that uses the medium in a way that made it a better experience. It's obvious that you would need a good movie to start with, and that's where almost all of these games fail.

Also, for some reason, too many people seem to think that horror would be an easy genre and that you need neither experience nor resources nor talent even though we've seen decades of evidence to the opposite. It's not like brilliance can't be achieved, but it needs masterclass acting, direction and writing. There isn't a facial expression, a camera angle, a sound or an effect that isn't important, and that is why it is a daring choice for an interactive experience that changes the plot.

Why? In short: You don't just have to make ONE good movie, you actually have to make SEVERAL good ones.

    +10

-1 "Little hope" does not even have that one good movie. The ghost-town setting has seen great games and movies alike, and none of them played out in what feels like a linear tunnel through a collection of random buildings, following a plot that tries to plaster an element of confusion over everything, a little amnesia here, a little silent hill over there, and the most lazy conclusion you can think of at the end.

-1 It's technically unimpressive with subpar effects that are just plain bad when it comes to bringing it's actors to life. It's hard to say if the faces are badly scanned or the animations are botched, but there's something just that little bit off in every movement and every expression that delivers way more horror than the actual game. It doesn't do itself any favors by starting out in darkness, since the used engine muddles shadows and colors alike - I have no idea how this wasn't the first thing that got an overhaul since it already dragged down the predecessor. It's like playing one of those HD-remastered PS2 games at some points.

-2 The control scheme got even worse than in the predecessor, and the "hints" break the atmosphere even more. That's borderline impressive because both were already terrible. it's takes away even the smallest hint of a challenge and destroys any immersion at the same time. The worst part is the implementation of scripted jump scares that are foreshadowed by a sudden change of the camera perspective where your characters won't move in any direction until you've seen that jump scare. It would make for a great satire of the genre, but I'm afraid they were serious about this.

-2 points points for, once again, using the oh so mysterious, oh so victorian narrator to break the pacing the minute it gets interesting only to mumble for long unskippable minutes about nothing in particular so that the helpless viewer is reminded of the fact that whoever made this game not only has no idea how to make a good movie, but also has a terrible taste in TV.

-2 That wouldn't be a problem if "Little Hope" would excel in anything, but the writing is sloppy, uninspired and so filled with logical fallacies, direction errors and goofs that the only emotion it made me feel was not fear, but anger. I am supposed to believe that character development is, once again, one of the things that I can actually influence, but since everyone is acting out unresolved issues from the past and impulses whenever they need to do something stupid to advance the plot, this isn't even funny anymore.

It's a waste of time, and you can't even have some good popcorn while wasting it. There isn't a theme, motivation or twist that hasn't been overdone 20 years ago. It failed to get me invested, excited, pensive or at the very least offended. It didn't even try to be good and failed at being mediocre.

It's a waste of all the talent and hard work involved, which pains me everytime. It wouldn't have to be. There are good horror movies out there; a good horror-movie game should not be impossible. Try, try again.

I enjoyed the game for the most part; mostly trying to kill off characters I didn't like. However, the interludes were pointless and distracting. The ending was worse, completely disconnected from 99% of the story.

One of the worst subversion of expectation endings in anything I have ever seen. Up to that point it was a very linear, boring, walking simulator with brief moments of control that all turn out to be pointless. Little hope is the second game in the dark pictures anthology, a series of interactive movie like games from the team that brought you until dawn.. and while I enjoyed Little Hope much better than man of medan, theres still a lot to be desired here…
Little Hope is a 4 our long interactive horror game that can be played solo or with a friend, here you play as a group of people after a bus swerves and crashes, youre all stuck in this abandoned ghost town called little hope with no way to escape.. the bus driver is missing and youll all set out to find him and also a way to find help.. while youre walking around youll ocassionally run into the little demon ghost girl, shell grab you and youre thrown into the past, as half of the game takes place in the 1690s witch trials.. and this are the best parts of the game.. I would have loved to play the entire game in this setting, the visuals, the acting, the charcters.. the eriness.. I loved when a ghost would grab me and take me back… and youre basically trying to solve the mystery of this little demon girl and why everyone in the past looks like the group of people youre with. Sadly the present day is so boring to get through… It was really hard to pay attention during these moments of basically just walking forward and interacting with stuff waiting to get grabbed again… that’s literally what it feels like, even when monsters are introduced to the game.. and for the first time playing a supermassive game, I felt like nothing had consequences, I felt like none of my choices ultimately mattered, leaving little to no replay value to be had here… obviously I don’t want to get into spoilers as this is a heavy story based game, but the ending here is the ending, it cant be changed, all that can be changed is the lead up to the revelation… really disappointing.
Overal though I loved this story way more than Man of Medans.. the parts of the game that take place in the oast, and trying to come up with the answer to this games story as I played made it all worth it…
Though the story is one you have little to no impact on this time and are more so just along for the ride… the story definitely saves this game from mediocrity.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. ''Little Hope'', psychological horror at its finest, is Supermassive's best effort yet. The mysteries, unanswered questions and never-ending scares will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. Piece by piece you puzzle the story together, but there's always that feeling of uncertainty. ''Am I right? No... it must be this other theory. Or not? Let's take another look at my clues.'' You quickly become attached to every single one of the characters, as truly unpleasant as they start off, and when they meet their demise at the hands of their own demon you simply feel bad. Until the very end. That big plot twist. The adventure of ''Little Hope'' is nothing more but a PTSD-driven schizophrenic episode of Anthony, who heavily struggles to deal with the deaths of his entire family at the start of the game. It's easy to brush it off as a farce, as a moment where you think to yourself ''Oh, but none of my choices mattered? None of these deaths mattered?'' until you truly look back on the story and how it all ties together. Because it's so much bigger than that, there's so much more to it. Yes, the family was dead from the very start. But it's a greater story about battling inner demons, Anthony's demons. The witch trials? Nothing more but Anthony trying to find the right person to blame. Was it his mother? His sister? His dad perhaps? No, they all died innocently. We know Megan did it, but why? The abusive priest finally pushed her over the edge. It makes you feel empty and devastated in the most heartbreaking way, and a story with a purposeful ending does that. And at the same time it makes you think. Are people who do terrible things, because terrible things have been done to them, victims or villains? Little Hope is a big success in every aspect imaginable by making you question every single thing you have witnessed and done. It's more than just a scary slasher game with monsters and jumpscares for you to play on Halloween eve (with all respect to Until Dawn). It's social commentary filled with gutting emotion. A big step-up from the slightly underwhelming predecessor Man of Medan and it makes me beyond excited for what they come up with next. Expand

In the series it ranks between Man of Medan and Until Dawn (UD being by far the best). The atmosphere and characters are much better than MoM but the ending / conclusion of the story is a joke. Not related and totally unconvincing ... it could have been a much higher ranking ...

Though, it’s not without its flaws. I feel a lot of the issues people had with Man of Medan (MoM) had either been poorly dealt with or negatively overcompensated for. (Gameplay mechanics spoilers ahead) One example of this would be the new QTE system, in which ample warning and therefore time is given to a player allowing for them to become aware of an upcoming QTE. Although this warning is helpful and aids in the avoidance of the frustration that comes with failing an unknown QTE, this almost completely renders the desired affect a QTE is meant to have, void. Another example is the heartbeat system, first implemented in MoM. It seems in Little Hope the heartbeat moments have been made much less intense and difficult when in comparison to MoM, once again nullifying the purpose of the system and the affect intended, a middle ground needs to be found for these systems.

The only other real issue I had was that the locations throughout the game all felt indistinguishable from one other, very “samey”. Other than the issues mentioned, I felt like the story and themes presented were overall better than in MoM, the characters in each game are great as well as the world building aspect. In conclusion I’d say Little Hope was the one experimental addition to the anthology and from here on out we should begin to see the best of both worlds (MoM & Little Hope) throughout the rest of the anthology. Definitely worth picking up and giving a play.

I was sure Little Hope will improve significantly upon the first installment in The Dark Pictures series, but the developers opted for the bare minimum. The story is more interesting, the ending is more surprising, and the character cast is better. There are also some technical improvements. Little Hope is decent, but still fails to provide things I expect from a good horror game, like more engaging gameplay, interesting plot twists (Until Dawn!), and a real sense of terror. While it doesn’t do anything new and even scales back its pure horror atmosphere, Little Hope greatly impresses in other ways with a more intriguing narrative and incredibly tense – and fun – interactive sequences. If you’re new to Supermassive’s games, this may be the best jumping-in point so far.

Little Hope is a slight improvement over Man of Medan. It’s still not scary at all, but at least it's less annoying than the first game. This time around, Supermassive wrote a better story, used decent camera angles, and purged awkward jokes (dumb "screamers" are still in there, though).
