Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure

Despite its minor flaws, Tesla Effect marks the return of a beloved character, it's overflowed with feeling, shows a perfect use of money gathered in Kickstarter and offers many hours of gameplay, inviting us at the same for extra playthroughs, in order to see its alternative endings.

Chris Jones and Aaron Conners bring back the legendary detective Tex Murphy and manage to make him feel as fresh as ever while respecting his legendary cult statue. Pixel hunting and low difficulty issues aside, Tesla Effect is an example on how sequels should be made.

Well worth the time of any Tex Murphy fan. Wven those that know nothing about the history of the protagonist will find something to like.

Tesla Effect is a low budget game with many flaws but it's also a great adventure made of memorable characters, great lines and funny moments.

Though he has lost his memory, Tex hasn’t lost any of his charm or humor, and Tesla Effect is a beautifully crafted love letter to a bygone era, made specifically with series fans in mind.

Overall, I found Tesla Effect to be entertaining enough to recommend. It’s just good goofy fun, and the writing and the acting help to carry it along and make up for the so-so puzzles and environments.

It does not reach the level and the beauty of its great predecessors, but Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure is still a good and nostalgic adventure game. Let's hope this Big Finish Games effort is not an isolated case, but the beginning of something more lasting.

It’s a game that is very clearly made for the fans, mainly those who have played the previous games. The puzzles, the writing, the acting, and the humor is all ripped straight from the 90’s, and if you’re fixated on modern gaming sensibilities, you probably won’t last ten minutes in Tex’s world. But for those who have been waiting for the return of the world’s greatest PI, look no further. Tesla Effect is a love letter to a genre that is all but gone.

If you're a fan of the noir genre or '90s adventure games, you're gonna like the cut of its jib.

Clearly, it is the fans who will get the most out of Tesla Effect. Designed specifically for them, they will appreciate seeing the gang back together for one more noir-fueled adventure.

Tex Murphy has been fairly successfully transported to the modern era, and maybe that's enough for the established fans. It's just a shame he didn't pick up enough new tricks in his sixteen-year hiatus for everyone else to take notice.

If you haven't played the original back in the day, this will probably look trashy to you. The story oftentimes borders on nonsense and the puzzles regularly are uninspired. But that's not what this is about. This is about once again seeing the world through Tex Murphy's eyes. And that's as much a privilege today as it was back in the olden times.

As adventure games go, The Tesla Effect is pretty average.

Prepare yourself for a time travel. Tesla Effect is far from being perfect, but seeing Tex Murphy back in action in a classic point-and-click adventure is surely a positive thing for videogames.

Every aspect -- from the humor to the puzzles to the live action cutscenes -- feels beamed here straight from the ‘90s. Sometimes it’s charming, and others, it’s just dated. But if nothing else, Tex’s puns and underdog relatability ultimately still make this rocky, uneven case worth cracking.

Technically old-fashioned adventure with real actors delivering a long forgotten trash factor. Puzzles and investigating the locations makes the trip to the past worthwhile.

Tex Murphy might be alive in 2014 but he'll need to learn a few more tricks if he's to stay around for another adventure.

For all its quaint charms, Tesla Effect is held back by all of the flaws that killed its genre in the first place.

Tex is back and it's right where he left off, ignoring more than 15 years of gaming evolution. It would've helped if he kept himself a little more up to speed.

Tesla Effect resurrects our favorite private detective, and lets us explore a new chapter of his spectacular life. All thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign. The game is certainly enjoyable, but it’s not without its problems. We can accept the low production value, but the quality of the story and the challenges are uneven trough the game.

For every moment Tesla Effect had me cursing the '90s, another put a big, fat grin on my face. It's unapologetic about its roots, even when it probably shouldn't be. But I really enjoyed my evenings with the barely functional gumshoe, and it didn't destroy my memories of Tex Murphy in the process.

Tex Murphy is back, and that's exactly as good – and as bad – as it sounds.

Tex Murphy fans will lap it up, but everyone else will likely consider this a case not worth solving.

Not half bad. Until the half that is makes for a disappointing return.

Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure should have been called Tex Murphy: The Nineties Were Awesome, because there is no way to tell such a trashy story with a straight face.

The best adventure games have an engaging story and interesting puzzles. Tesla Effect doesn't have either.
