This mmo will blow you away by level 10, combat and graphics are unprecedented in this genre, the questing is what is is.....but I found my self killing more mobs than quests required just cause the combat is that good! The unreal 3 engine pulls this all off perfectly , smooth fluid movement and reaction times. Beats WOW in my book and put SWTOR to shame!

Game is nice to look at. Combat is fun, but simplistic. The rest of the game....well where is it? PVP? ok...but with such a simplistic combat system, it's not really worth the monthly sub. This game is a one trick pony. This game while nice and polished just doesn't tickle the MMORPG nerve. It's a console game masquerading as an MMO, and not even a good console game at that.

I love this new concept of MMO game. Aiming, dodging, and attacking are all very exciting! Plus, I like the fantastic graphic of race, armor, background. Character creation is also interesting to personalize.

While the average mob isn't that dangerous till higher levels, the BAMs and bosses are a lot of fun. They move around, randomly change directions, have multiple move sets, can easily wipe your party if you make a mistake. All this makes the game very rewarding. Yes the quests are very generic, they haven't really changed from what MMOs have been doing for the past 10 years. It is essentially the same as what every other game does, WoW, Everquest, etc. SWTOR is pretty much the only game with a better quest system.

If you want to play a MMO which rewards skill based play, doesn't involve tab targeting and forces you to actually aim and time your moves, then this is the game for you. Th combat makes this game and the graphics are a nice addition too. There really is no reason to not play this unless you are not a fan of the subscription model.

The combat which should be the highlight is actually more a novelty than anything. It gives the illusion of no tab targeting but fails to actually deliver that type of combat. Between the forgiving nature of the aiming system, having your targets rooted while they try to use abilities, the AoE nature of most attacks, the fact that many abilities still home in on targets, and due to how slow paced the combat is the lack of tab targeting does nothing more than give the illusion of action combat. The reality is that it is traditional MMO combat with a twist. Other than this the game is just bad on many fronts. The questing is atrocious, the mobs are repeated many times through out the game, PvP servers are out of whack because something as minor as a 1 level difference is a huge disadvantage and one hard to overcome with skill. The graphics simply aren't my cup of tea but I can appreciate the fact that they are well done for the style. I wish I had more good things to say about the game but I just don't. I have a level 40 lancer, level 30 archer and a level 20 Warrior. However whether both these plus points can stand the test of time is another matter, and if they can't then the future doesn't look that rosey for TERA in my opinion; as aside from these two albeit significant pluses TERA has very little else to offer over and above any other MMO already on the market. While there's nothing particularly bad about the game it's just more of the same generic fantasy 'kill 10 monkeywangers" go back and '"kill 10 infected monkeywangers" etc etc... don't be expecting any deep lore or story telling here, there's a lot less than Rift for example. So far upto level 20, the levelling process has been linear in the extreme, with all classes/races being funnelled through the same zones and quests (with no diversity). The other issue I have with the game is pricing, because as the sub price has been fixed using EURO's which means for a UK player the monthly sub will be variable, and presently is more expensive than it's peers in the MMO market. Now this isn't a moan or whine about not being able to afford it, or as a UK player that we should get special treatment, but an objective view on TERA's price in comparison to other games available on the UK market. It's simply more expensive than any of the big MMO's out there from a UK players perspective, and I have to ask (as will I'm sure many others) is it worth the extra cost over the competition.. my opinion is; not really! I feel that the pricing difference will be a mental barrier (it's over the 'golden' £10) as opposed to a real fiscal barrier, but I think many potential subscribers will simply choose to go elsewhere.. Rift, SWTOR, WoW, LoTRO, and even the about to be released GW2. Expand

I don't believe in objective reviews for the sole fact that you introduce what I like to consider the "godlike" element, in that you expect way too much from the game, and that most people who would like to think they're objective are anything but. I'm not going to fool myself and I'm going to look at everything in respect to other MMO's on the market.

    Gameplay:

Looking at everything from the big picture, this is your standard MMO experience. Your goal is to get to the endgame, and you do this by killing things and questing.

    Questing and Story:

The questing in this game is one of its shortcomings. It's all pretty much the generic, "fetch this" or "kill this" kind of thing. If you're expecting the quests themselves to be new or exciting, for the most part you're going to be disappointed.

If you actually play the game for its lore and take that into consideration, the quests do become somewhat more engrossing because the lore is high quality and coherent. They make you feel like you're actually making an impact to the world, even if you are doing essentially the same thing over and over. The lore helps break the monotony if you pay attention to it.

    Interface:

The interface is quite different from your standard MMO due to the fact that the combat is action-based. Simply put, there are two interface modes. In your standard combat and running around mode, the mouse moves your field of vision and affects where you aim your abilities. In the second mode, you have an onscreen cursor to do things such as open menus and move inventory items around.

There is somewhat of a learning curve to the interface, but it's fairly intuitive once you get used to it. Switching between the two interface modes is quite simple; all you have to do is hit "Alt" or "Esc". In fact, they made the transition even more user-friendly as certain queues or actions will automatically enable one of the two interface modes. For instance, if you move in any direction, the combat-mode will be enabled, while talking to a quest giver will enable the interface-interaction mode.

    Combat:

This is where the game absolutely shines. Other MMO's have your standard tab-targeting system where you stand still and cast abilities with no real consequence for not moving at all. In TERA, the combat is far more action-oriented. While I hesitate to say it's revolutionary, it's a significant improvement over the standard MMO system.

Each class has abilities that either mitigate damage or allow you to avoid it completely when you use them at the right time during combat. If you're really keen, you can even dodge a lot of things by running to the side or backwards at the perfect time. The game rewards you for doing this, by allowing you to pretty much eliminate any downtime if you're skilled enough with your dodging or mitigation.

Another aspect of the action-oriented combat where this game improves upon other MMO's is its combo system. Your abilities have the potential to chain together and create awesome effects, as well as lower their channeling times. The system is very fluid and natural once you get used to it, and is a lot more engaging than simply hitting your skills based on a cooldown-only system.

An unfortunate aspect of the combat is that the animations are locked, meaning once you start casting an ability you can't do anything else until the animation is finished. A non-locked system would be quite easy to exploit though, so it's not all bad in this regard.

    Sound & Music:

The sound and music in this game are very solid and what you would expect from a Fantasy MMO. I haven't come across any music yet that has made me say "holy crap this is EPIC!", but the music is definitely engaging and helps you immerse yourself in the world.

    Visuals:

This game looks amazing. There's not a whole lot else to say about it. The world was designed well, and is visually striking. It is probably the best looking MMO to date.

    Overall:

This has been the most enjoyable MMO experience I have had in a very long time, and TERA comes highly recommended from me. A must play for any MMO buff!

The negatives for me are probably that I'd like a little more innovation in quests, but I don't see that they are any worse than 90% of MMOs I've played. There's enough instance quests, and then BAM fights starting at about level 19 to break up the repetition of "go kill x", "go gather x", "go talk to x".

The positives are the graphics, and environments that keep my jaw dropping with each new area, The bosses and BAM fights actually do require some thinking and strategy rather than just skill bar mashing. Tanking is more than just about keeping aggro since your blocks actually prevent damage to people behind you. The collisions based combat, while not as dynamic as something pure instance based like Vindictus, or some single player games, is a huge accomplishment and most people just don't understand the amount of complexity this adds to the server/net code. They've done a great job, and some minor annoyances like enemy pop up is acceptable to me given that it's only noticeable for me when traveling fast by mount. More important than any of that, and why I'm giving it a good review despite some issues is that I've been playing since CB1, and I'm still having *fun*. In a genre that was nearly dead to me, and generally hasn't kept my interest, this says more to me than any feature or bug.

Not only does TERA utilize the latest graphic shaders it has the art work to back it up. Environments are rich and detailed, textures are consistent and high quality. The characters models are incredibly imaginative and well modeled. Most of the nonsense from previous MMOs have been removed, however TERA is not without it's own monotony; The starting zone is the same for all races, so rolling multiple classes gets fairly tedious quickly. The questing system is fairly standard and there aren't too many changes to the formula. Perhaps playing this game as a singleplayer game would be a mistake. Where this game shines is in the group mechanics, it is very fun to play with your friends. The Big Ass Monster fights are really fun and it feels like you're constantly fighting a bunch of mini-bosses which are both challenging and satisfying to take down. Bottom line is if you are playing TERA with your friends or with other people, you'll have a good time. Expand

While the game starts off fairly easy, with monsters and combat scenario's that may make you question how legitimate the action combat system really is, that all quickly changes once you hit level 20 and start fighting your first BAM (big ass monster). Fighting these very closely resembles a boss fight in the popular Monster Hunter series. Monsters rarely stay in one place, and attack in a wide variety of engaging ways, many of which will kill you extremely quickly if you do not dodge and block accordingly. On top of a truly engaging combat system, the games graphics and world design is simply beautiful. If you like stylized high-fantasy with the most impressive combat system I've ever seen in this genre, you need to play this.

I could only find a single fault, and that's in the shallow story and highly genre-bound quests (Kill/Find/Gather X of Y in this area, move to the next area, rinse & repeat.), but the world itself is quite charming despite the lack of story.

I've read good things about this game, so i thought i had to give it a try. With no trial, and i couldn't find any buddy codes i decided to just jump in and buy the game, and pray that i don't get burned like in the past (DCUO, one of the most recent notable examples).

As i live in UK, i was torn between which version to buy, En Masse (North American), or Frogster (Europe). I decided to go with En Masse due to hearing good things about the community and polite staff and also because it would be a more English speaking community. however i believe having 2 different publishers with slightly different versions of the game could REALLY hurt the sales of the game, due to confusing new players

It took me a full day to actually download the game, due to the rediculous game size (18Gb), and then i had a few logging in problems.

Then i logged in, and after being utterly confused as to why i was starting at lvl 20, and searching forums/websites to see if it was a bug, or something, i persevered and found it was just a prologue. Good idea, badly executed.

Then i got onto Noob Island. and this is where i really started to fall in love with the game. It looks amazing. it plays amazing. sure, the quests are really repetitive, but a few times i have actually found myself killing too many of "x" mob just because i got carried away with the slaughter - the combat is just THAT fun!

I'm still on Noob Island, so i can't really comment on anything after the island, but i hear the game just gets better from then onwards. And the political system sounds like an interesting end-game, i'm not one for raiding so it's refreshing to see a new take on an MMO-end game that could just keep me interested!

The quests and crafting are pretty average, but there isn't anything wrong with them either. I would definitely say that the game is worth a try for anyone that gets the chance, for both MMO veterans and people new to the genre as well.

Some of the negative reviews I have read are entirely facetious! That said, I have played many MMOs and had quit after growing tired of them. This one sucked me back in...therefore I'd say it is successful. It looks great, has plenty of new places to explore, and PvP is very fun.

Technically you can create items that are on par with what you find elsewhere, but it is so expensive there is no way you can afford to do it unless you are playing on an alt and have a rich main. In other words, it's pretty much the exact same thing that you find in most other MMOs. The world feels dead to me, aka just like most other MMOs. Questing is horrible, quite possibly even worse than other MMOs. Graphics are good, but the hyper-sexualised aesthetics are not appealing to me, some people will like it though. What else did I miss? Political system? Sounds interesting on paper, but I didn't experience it and since the world feels dead to me, not sure I care enough to try to experience it. Overall combat is probably a 9/10, everything else is 4 or below. For some people, combat alone is enough to carry the game, and for me personally in some cases that is true as well, I love Mount and Blade Warband and that game doesn't really have much beyond combat. But for an MMO, a subscription MMO especially I want to play in a world that I care about, I want to enjoy things other than combat. And TERA doesn't have that, so I will not be playing this game, there are other games out there already out or coming out soon that offer much much more value for money. Expand

While the game has been recently released, there are relatively few bugs, and the gaming experience is generally smooth. When issues do rise up, the support team is also among the nicest that I have encountered, and quick to reply. En Masse is also very vocal on twitter, so players always know what is going on when an in game event occurs, or there are login troubles. There is a lot of potential in TERA, and I expect great things to come.

After playing all the CBTs and having an early start in OBT and playing to the current cap of level 32 (and now to 43 after going live) I've got to say that this is quite easily the best MMORPG I've played.

Now, that is based on my previous experience in MMORPGs and my initial favour towards eastern art direction and architecture so your mileage might vary on that opinion. And that is what initially drew me to this game to begin with, but what has kept me is the combat and gameplay as well as the community.

The problem I have with this game, is levels 1 - 20 are a bit of a chore. While the combat is ace, your early skills aren't indicative of how varied the combat can be in later levels, so it feels very much like your usual stale MMORPG with collection quests. En Masse valiantly have tried to counter this with adding extra moves to bosses and monsters, trying to make it more of a challenge, as well as the prologue intro, but it's essentially going to remain quite stale.

This is where I think a lot of players falter, and certainly where I faltered in a number of my concerns to begin with. I did wonder if the quests would change, if there'd be actual variation, if the combat was going to stay as clicking the mouse button and dodging blindly because of how easy it was.

I will mention the need for a solid community base to fully enjoy this game. It promotes parties, it promotes politics and it promotes guilds. If you endeavour to solo it, your enjoyment is going to be less than what it could be if you had a group of friends. They have tried to counter this with cross-server LFG tools, and it actually fairs extremely well. But this is just for instanced dungeons, not the open world (for obvious reasons). While there is a single-server LFG tool for open world, not many people utilise it because they are already with their guild parties.

Back to the combat. It's great. If you make it past the earlier levels (and let's be honest, it doesn't take long in this game) then you're in for a treat. The quests are by and large, the same. However, this isn't a problem. Why? Because the combat is so **** sweet. You have a quest to kill 20 monsters, that sounds tedious, right? Wrong! They are usually quite condensed so you can run around and agro as many as you like and give yourself a real challenge.

As a slayer, I'm close quarters, high evasion, damage through combinations. I will pick around four monsters, gather them up and play it almost literally like I was playing God of War (with limitations of it being an MMORPG, of course). And it is intensely satisfying. The combat is fluid, it *feels* strong, the sound effects make it sound like my attacks are connecting and that they are really doing damage. My varied options of evading, stunning, knocking down, slashing everything in my range - it's so satisfying. The one single downside to this is that I can never go back to a traditional combat styled MMORPG. It's that satisfyingly good.

The community, originally it was god-awful. People in open chat made it comparable to Barrens chat, it was bad. However, people seem to have settled in or the players testing the waters have dropped off and people who really care about the game have stayed. The open world chat is still full of drama, but that's a good thing. It's open world PvP with a high emphasis on Guild vs Guild PvP in the open world - so of course you're going to have people beating their chests for everyone to see.

People seem to love to play their roles well because of how satisfying it is to play them well. I have never once been in a bad instanced party, it's either good, or great, or awesome, never bad.

Enchanting weapons is interesting, you take an item from the merchant, your weapon and another weapon of that tier and try to enchant it. The rarity of the sacrificial weapon increases the chance, but are also valuable weapons themselves so that is the result of risk of loss which makes it a bit interesting, but not soul destroying if you fail an enchant.

Gathering is awesome, you can mine, dig plants, take essence and the incentive to stop killing monsters and gather things is that you actually get beneficial buffs to your character which aids in killing more monsters. I haven't tried making any armour or weapons or anything like that, that stuff doesn't interest me. But I do like gathering.

Also, if there is a queue on the server, after 10 minutes of waiting you get an XP bonus for every minute longer you wait. A nice addition for having to wait in queue.

Of course there are still things I don't like about the game, and maybe this is still the honeymoon period, but I can't see myself lessening my enjoyment if this is how much fun I'm having only at level 32 with just two instances to play. Bring on retail!

If you can get past the eastern graphics and the hilariously awful race that is the Elin, you may well enjoy this game also.

I'm a longtime MMO player with, I would like to think, vast experience on this subject. I do need to say that the opinions expressed here are solely my own and in no way represent or give favoritsm to the company that makes this game. That being said, I hope you all enjoy my review of TERA and I look forward to playing with all of you at the Head Start.

I would like to start off by saying that the visuals in this game are quite impressive. More often than not I found myself in awe of some of the beautifully animated locales strewn throughout the game. That's not to say it was perfect though. The Open Beta was marred with tearing, blinding white spots and minor annoyances that will hopefully be patched out by the time the game launches or soon thereafter. Also, while the dungeons bosses were impressive, the lack of detail and overuse of duplicate scenery in them were not. It's not really a big problem as I enjoyed them nonetheless, but something that I thought I would note.

For a Korean game that surpasses Aion in visuals, I was expecting a more varied Character Creation. Don't get me wrong, the character models are absolutely stunning and worthy of praise. I was just expecting more options in the way of customizing your character, much akin to Aion. I mean, come on, who doesn't want to change their female Sorcerer's bust size? But all jokes aside, it wasn't too bad and in my honest opinion is done much better than the Character Creation of a game like World of Warcraft. However, people really need to get off the whole 'Elin are a pedophiles dream' train. The creature design in this game is amazing. Some of the monsters were really well done and awe-inspiring. Props to them in this department.

In just about every game I've played I always favor melee type characters, especially those who use a Great Axe. So yes, I did play Berserker. Though I also tried Sorcerer, Archer and Slayer. The majority of my experience was on the Berserker. The combat for me was fluid, fun and took more skill than a game like Aion or World of Warcraft. The first 20 levels were easy and I never died, however it was a great way to learn the game and get used to the combat for the content to come. As soon as I was able to do BAM's I was in love. The fights were exciting and required precise timing as well as the use of all my skills to not only stay alive, but do damage to the beasts. This was honestly where the game shined and I couldn't have been having any more fun. Dungeon bosses were even more intense and decidedly more impressive than your run of the mill BAM. The combat might have been over-hyped but I think it is one of the best features in this game. And the cool thing is that there is still more room for improvement, it can only get better people!

One of the weakest points to this game would be the story. I read all the quest text, paid attention to the cutscenes and gathered as much information as I could. But for some reason it just didn't strike the 'completely awesome' chord for me. That's not to say that the story isn't great, I just think it could be better and who knows, it might after 32.

Really, the only thing I didn't participate in was PvP. Sorry guys, but I truly hate PvP and you almost never see me do it. So if you want an opinion on that, you'll have to go elsewhere. I might end up trying it out sometime, but it's not a priority of mine.

Aside from some minor tweaks and improvements that will hopefully be fixed by the time it launches, this game is well on it's way to becoming a force to be reckoned with. If you want fast paced, skill based combat with stunning visuals and a detailed world look no further than this game. Like I said before, it can only get better and it's my hope that it will.

For a pre-launch review based on the first 32 levels of content I give this game an 9 out of 10. It's definitely one of the smoother betas I've participated in and has lots of room to improve. I hope you enjoyed reading my review and I will definitely see you all at Head Start!

The bad is the quests. The writing in them really sucks. If the quest isn't a story (red) quest then chances are that it isn't worth reading. I also don't really care for the crafting system. It isn't very intuitive as far as components, runes, and stuff go. The voice acting and cutscenes are nice after the intro levels - I admit that those are pretty bad.

I'd like to preface this by saying that TERA has alot of potential. However, the biggest threat to TERA's success isn't coming from any current or upcoming MMO; it's coming from TERA. It takes a 6-8 hours to start having fun in the game. That means if you have one of each of the 8 classes (like myself), you will wind up spending 48-64 hours doing the most unimaginative and mundane quests in MMOs in the last 5 years. It is the single stupidest thing that a generally smart dev team has done for this game. THIS needs to be changed before I can give TERA a good score (-2 points). And no, the 20 min prologue did not help...it only serves to confuse new players.

    Character Design
There is enough variance to make most people happy, but you will be playing someone with an overly sexualized body, or a baraka/amani. I was very happy with my Archer

    Combat
Combat is stupid easy for the first 1-19 levels. The monsters in general are either small and don't take much damage or big enough that there really isn't that much of a challenge in aiming. Level 20, you fight your first BAM, which is quite a jarring and fun experience. However, it only serves to highlight the absolute idiocy of having the first 6-8 hours be so lame. EME has FUN stuff in the game!! WHY don't they show it to you outside of the 20min prologue?

    Questing
Not going to even talk about it. It's nothing special.

    Final Opinion
I feel that TERA is a waste of HUGE potential. It's an MMO that forgot the RPG. Is it a good MMO? Yes. Is it good enough to warrant the $50-80 box cost + 10-15 bucks a month or chronoscroll cash grind? I don't think so.

This has to be the most enthralling and exciting game i have ever played, Sure it has the kill quests, but COMBAT IS FUN!! i cannot stress how much fun it is to swing a bigass axe or aim a fiery ball of death, with such good animations. And as a bonus, the graphics are beautiful, the characters are graceful, and It runs insanely well on almost any computer with UNREAL engine 3! This game has renewed my interest in the MMO genre which I had just about given up on. There are elements that are standard fare such as the questing system, what sets this game apart is the combat system. The combat in all the characters I've played is just downright FUN. Even healing and tanking has been made fun and interesting, a rare thing in MMO's these days.

Experience: WoW, FFXI, FFXIV, EVE, SWToR, EQ, EQ2, Korean Tera Cons:
    - Not much variety in questing, pretty much your kill/gather/deliver quest variety throughout the game.
    - Path for leveling is also very much straight forward on rails type deal. At certain levels you will need to hit certain zones to get/complete quest of your level. This only really becomes a problem when you start

    - Not much variety in questing, pretty much your kill/gather/deliver quest variety throughout the game.
    - Path for leveling is also very much straight forward on rails type deal. At certain levels you will need to hit certain zones to get/complete quest of your level. This only really becomes a problem when you start leveling your third or second character.
    - Lower levels are very easy, i would say they may even be to lowly tuned, because of the action combat system and your ability to dodge attacks many people may find the game somewhat boring through the stages of 1-30 ish as there is no feeling of real danger of death or real challenge in your questing.
    - Party size can sometimes be an issue when you have a large group of friends playing the game

    Pros:
    - Group Quest. I don't think this is talked about enough about this game, group quest occur in almost every zone you level in but are not needed to be completed to progress through the zone. What this does is it gives players an option to do these group quest which requires a little setup but offers greater item/exp rewards than your normal quest. Or to pass them if they do not want to go through the trouble. This allows players to interact socially when questing, make friends, meet people, etc, but does not punish them if they happen to be playing at off hours when they cannot create a group. While this setup is nothing new to mmo's it is worth mentioning that it's in the game.
    - Party Grinding. I started playing mmos in EQ and FFXI which is why I like that this is in this game, but most bam (Big ass monster) quest when completed will give you a repeatable kill quest, which than allows people to form parties to grind on these bans for the exp they give, which is usually plentiful, and the exp/item reward gains from the quest itself. This is sometimes a welcome reprieve from soloing.
    - The Action combat system is also very fun, but as mentioned above in the cons can sometimes make the game feel too easy.
    - PVP, I find the over world PVP in this game to be well done, along with the guild battle system which allows players to declare war on a guild for some awesome over world pvp goodness. Currently no battlegrounds in the game however if you are a battleground enthusiast - Pretty game is pretty. Overall Tera is a very good game, but it's not one that I can suggest to everyone. The cons that i mentioned will affect certain people more than others. because of the way the questing system is currently setup, which is basically going from hub to hub doing kill/gather/deliver quest for some people It may feel like a very large grind. While the combat system does take the edge off a little, as mentioned when you get the hang of your class, and the best way to handle certain mobs it also makes the game sometimes feel like it's to easy and to repetitive. Add on to that what feels to be a very linear progression model, it does make the game feel like somewhat of a grind, this is even more prevalent on your 2nd or 3rd 60. However their are ways to change it up, they do have dungeons and a dungeon finder system, they also have ways via repeatable quest to grind bams in a party setting so you can focus on your job mechanics, ie if your a priest you can actually be healing a party instead of grinding quest, or if your a tank you can practice your tanking. These are welcome reprieves and are quite fun.

Overall a decent MMO. Already developed for over a year in Korea, this port has been really well done. It brings new combat to the table, it's strongest feature. No more tab, target, face roll. You need to move, use attacks that are appropriate, watch the mob for signals that it's attacks are coming and move out of the way or block. VERY action oriented and very refreshing.

The artwork is amazing, character and creature models are great. Each new creature I run into, I amazed at the little details that make it interesting. The world is beautiful.

A new political system that I haven't seen done in games before, though it hasn't come into play yet, it will be interesting to see how it works.

Everything else is standard MMO, quest, kill mobs, level up. Overall I rate it pretty high because I really enjoy running around in the world and the combat.

Let's face it, 90% of an MMO is killing things and Tera nails that. Overall pretty solid. The main draw is the combat. Fast paced and action based which is what sets it apart from other MMO's. It's less about optimizing your character on a spreadsheet and more about playing an actual game. Compared to a game like WoW every role from dps to tanking to healing is far more active. IE DPS are constantly chasing targets, dodging attacks, all while pumping out the damage. You don't stand in one spot for 8 minutes while performing a rotation.

There are some weaknesses in things like crafting, class balance and role distribution, and the questing follows the basic MMO model of "Kill 10 of x". Those are mostly tertiary problems which while annoying are over shadowed by the engaging combat.

It is a nice refreshing change to the combat systems of all other MMOs out there. The having to dodge which requires you paying attention to the enemy animation (there is no cast bar) along with the lock on and aiming systems works very fluid. Graphically it is a eye pleasure, even more as you get out of the starting areas. It is a Korea based MMO and therefore unlike most Western MMOs it is a bit more grindy that some maybe use to. Though this is offset a bit by the combat system which keeps you engaged a bit more than just standing there pressing attacks while downing a drink like other MMOs. If you are into healing this is a completely new experience than you will find in any game out currently. There are no healing bars that you click on, heals must be aimed at players or AoEs placed. Healers also provide support to the dps, have to be on constant movement around the field and on some fights are responsible for dps other targets. Can be a bit nerve racking at first, though quickly becomes a completely immersive experience. Again no standing there watching a healing grid waiting to play whack a mole. The crafting, enchanting etc system is a bit more tedious to really skill up. Crafting you will have access to every possible one (armor, cloth, leather, alch, focus etc) along with every gathering skill (mining, herb, essences). You could realistically level each one though it quickly becomes a money sink or gathering sink for certain reagents which only drop off larger mobs or instance quests. But to me this makes it much more satisfying to actually complete. Enchanting is the same way with a RNG to it if the reagents used (powders and a sacrificed item of gear) increase it. This generally means you probably will not be really enchanting the gear which is done through stages (+2-+12) till higher end tier items.

There is also no pay2win model here as some who have spewed here with not playing nor any attention to the actual discussions of the Western Tera. If you are looking for a chance in a MMO, do not mind a more grindy though generally rewarding experience with full attention and fluid situational awareness from all group members; then get Tera.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I created an account just to review this game and try to combat some of the misinformation people are spewing on her to down-rate this game.

The game's Action Combat is very refreshing to see in an MMO where the last decade all you had to do was tab-target and push a few numbers on your keyboard. While I admit this would not work on some hard mode fights in WoW and other games on dungeons you could usually just stand around and hop out of fire if it landed under you. With Tera you have to constantly be aiming at the boss (or teammates if you're a healer) planning your abilities and avoiding damage. The mobs in Tera have really cool animations as well. I just finished healing a Cultists Refuge group last night on my 40 Mystic and that was the most fun I've had healing in a very long time.

Try this game out you won't be disappointed!

Tera sure makes promise on the "true action combat" that it so advertises, but that change alone to the MMORPG formula isn't enough to flip the genre on its head, especially when you've forgotten about other aspects of it.

That being said, Tera is in surprisingly good shape for a game so early in its life cycle. The journey to level cap is mostly entertaining, endgame content is available, and the core gameplay elements are solid.

Action-oriented combat and interesting graphics aren't enough to overcome what is overall a rather bland experience.
