A thoroughly mediocre space combat game with a good storyline, decent graphics and bad sounds. Active wingmen and good spacecraft modification are a nice touch. [Oct 2007]
  2. There may not be much replayability in this title – save for the proverbial ‘try it again at a harder difficulty setting’ – but what Tarr Chronicles delivers is fun and visually pleasing.
  3. Tarr Chronicles is a solid mid-price space combat title. It may not be the best ever, but is't a solid and fun offering.
  4. Though it may get frustrating at times and is a little slow paced, if you're aching for a chance to fly through the galaxy in a personally-customized flying canister of destruction, Tarr Chronicles might be the game to satisfy the urge.

Though it's not exceptional in any one area, it manages to provide some enjoyable combat with neat customization options and graphics that are easy on the eyes.
  6. It can be enjoyable enough in short doses, but you may not find yourself motivated to stick with the game until the end, especially when you factor in the inevitable frustrations caused by the game's mission design.

With the combat interminably dull and the story unintelligibly delivered, this isn't the triumphant return of the space shooter we'd hoped for. [Dec 2007, p.62]
  8. Those not expecting too much, who may be pining for an uncomplicated spin through familiar territory will certainly enjoy Tarr Chronicles, but it's no substitute for replaying the utterly fantastic and cheap, "FreeSpace 2." [Christmas 2007, p.92]
  9. Unfortunately, the buggy, short, one-shot gameplay, dodgy AI and disappointing storytelling leave you feeling more alone in the cold, dark reaches of space than behind the stick of the deadliest fighter in the galaxy.

Despite its stability problems, impenetrable plot, localization issues, and repetitive missions, Tarr Chronicles will likely still find an audience with long-suffering space simulation fans. [Jan 2008, p.87]
  11. Tarr Chronicles is the painful combination of incomprehensible and insipid.
  12. Tarr Chronicles just isn’t that good.

Think: budget space combat game; a watered-down Freelancer that offers little more than standard ship-to-ship dogfighting.
