While fans of Tolkien’s works might find the gameplay to be interesting, there isn’t much to chew on when it comes to the story.

I was never overly invested in the narrative and the golden path is rarely groundbreaking. However, the community is endearing even if they can’t seem to figure out any problem without me. They give me a reason to jump back into an enticing environment which I relish just existing in. Purpose-driven players may not find what they’re looking for in the cozy folds of Bywater. If you’re searching for a game where you can stop, smell the roses, wander through the fields, and dive into a pleasingly simple life, Tales of the Shire is for you.

A slow-paced, peaceful farming sim that, despite lots of walking, offers a relaxing break in the idyllic Shire.

I don't think it's worth starting Tales of the Shire for the plot alone, or to tick off another item from the Lord of the Rings universe, but it's worth experiencing for its well-constructed atmosphere. It's a great cozy game that makes good use of its source material.

Tales of the Shire does many things right, but there are also fundamental things that it just doesn't quite get right, and that affects the game more than you might think. But if you're looking for a cosy life sim game to play over the summer, or if you just have to own everything with The Lord of the Rings' name on it, then take a look at Tales of the Shire, but be prepared for the fact that life as a hobbit isn't quite as inviting as you might think.

Great cooking and foraging systems, but not a lot else to keep you busy.

There is something magical in Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of The Rings Game, but it’s sometimes hard to find it… Still, I keep thinking that while a Hobbit hole means comfort, Tolkien’s favorite characters also deserve a bit more depth than just resting on genre fundamentals.

By itself, Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings game is fine. The aesthetic is accurate, and the emphasis on cooking makes it feel very different from many other games of this type. However, the game feels like it is lacking in other areas that are seen as genre staples, making the game feel rather light at first glance. This is before you start to compare the game to other licensed cozy life sims and see that those games have much more to offer before the amount of stuff to do starts to dry up. Again, this game is fine, but there are better examples of the genre.

It rarely becomes more than a pleasant distraction, rather than something that feels warm and real. [Issue#414, p.120]

Tales of the Shire is nothing if not low stakes and low stress. But it also makes for an extremely dull experience if you want even the slightest bit more than that, which makes it very hard to recommend.

Tales of the Shire feels like an unfinished beta version. It lacks detail, depth, and, above all, sound. A lot of wasted potential.

Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game is a charming proposition at first glance, offering a fresh take on Middle-earth by focusing on the everyday lives of hobbits. Its welcoming aesthetic and respect for the spirit of Tolkien's work certainly appeal to fans of the universe. However, its lack of depth in mechanics, lack of innovation within the cozy genre itself, and excessively slow pace make the experience repetitive and dull.

Tales of the Shire offers a relaxing Hobbit life experience where you set your own pace, engaging in activities like fishing, farming, and cooking. The game shines in its detailed cooking system and home customization, with friendship levels unlocking upgrades and new content. While the seasonal changes add variety, the lack of deeper interactions, birthdays, and holidays feels like a missed opportunity. Despite some optimization issues and a simple narrative, the charming art style and immersive world make it an enjoyable, if imperfect, escape.

Tales of the Shire isn’t quite the game I wanted it to be, but for the hours I wandered Bywater, I still came away dreaming of my new, cosy life in The Shire.

Not all cosy games need to evoke hard emotions. However, it does feel like a disservice to the emotionally complex source material not to explore the richness of the world at large – especially when dry humour, tragedy and finely drawn social structures are what make Tolkien’s writing so powerful. Without any challenging quandaries to pull at your heartstrings, the promising atmosphere in Tales of the Shire is overwhelmed by endless fetch quests. Diehard Tolkienites and Stardew Valley lifers may be better off looking elsewhere for their cosy thrills.

Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game allows you to live out the life of a hobbit in a warm and welcoming world, with some nice ideas throughout.

Tales of the Shire is a charming life sim that leans heavily on cozy game comfort but rarely ventures beyond it. The gorgeous world and a few unique mechanics offer fleeting moments of greatness—especially for fans of the genre or Middle-earth—but the experience feels safe, familiar, and ultimately too shallow to truly stand out.

Tales of the Shire is close to everything a fan of The Shire would desire. So close. But it ultimately falls on some major technical issues and an overall lifeless town, the complete opposite of what you would expect to find in a game based on the merriest and calmest population of Middle Earth, hosts of the biggest feasts from this side of the Brandywine. There is potential, though. Let's hope Weta Workshops will sharpen this really precious but uncut gem.

Tales of the Shire does Tolkien's lore justice and has a new approach to unlocking features in cozy games that'll make your heart sing. However, Bywater struggles to keep you content with staying in the Shire for long.

I am a bit disappointed with Tales of the Shire. The idea was great, but the execution just didn’t capture the magic of Tolkien’s world.

Tales of the Shire offers a cute cozy adventure that perfects its fishing and cooking, but fails to succeed in any other area synonymous with the genre.

My time with Tales of the Shire has been a frustrating mix of small dopamine hits when progressing each morning, to dragging myself to the finish line of a day after exhausting everything I need to do. The constant crashes and lack of an autosave have put me in quite an anxious state for a cozy game, as I make sure to save before doing anything. While I feel the game has made its way 'there', it's not quite ‘back again’ and needs a bit more time before it’s really ready for an adventure.

This social simulation will disappoint more than just Lord of the Rings fans. It could have used some fine-tuning.

Tales of the Shire sounds like an interesting take on a Middle-Earth game, with its priority on the mundane rather than the grittier aspects of the world’s history. However, it’s just kind of boring, which is a shame since a cozy Hobbit game sounds like it should’ve been a home run. Maybe the game would have gotten more interesting as I unlocked more areas and befriended more characters, but since my progression has stalled thanks to some bizarre bug, I guess there won’t be a Shire for me anymore.

A great idea lost under the weight of tiresome game mechanics.

As someone who loves Lord of the Rings, life-sims, and cozy games, Tales of the Shire is heartbreakingly disappointing--so much so that I find myself genuinely wondering what went wrong. With such a strong premise, a solid team working on it, and what seemed like a concentrated effort being made to let this game fully cook before it was shipped, I’m ultimately confused by the finished product and concerned for what happened during production. Although Tales of the Shire has some charming ideas, dull gameplay, heaps of bugs, and a general sense of emptiness ultimately drag this once-promising life sim down to the pits of Moria.

Bywater looks like the kind of Hobbit town I’d want to live in. Its rolling hills are gorgeous in all seasons, with well thought-out sightlines letting you see far into the distance at the settlement’s variety. It’s full of lush plant life and chirping birds, with scattered structures accenting rather than disrupting the natural landscape. But it doesn’t feel like the Shire as we know it from The Lord of the Rings books and films, seeming more like a pale imitation rather than a faithful recreation. There’s some cozy joy to be had in the slow-paced daily life of a Hobbit here, but Tales of the Shire ultimately fails to capture the magic of The Lord of the Rings or invent much of its own.

Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game is the Grima Wormtongue of games: it whispered many wonderful promises into my ear, but by the end I was left a wretched shadow of my former self. I had a lot of hope that this could be the perfect mix of a genre I love and the Tolkien world I’ve spent much of my life nerding out about, but those hopes were cast into the fires from whence they came. With life sim mechanics that are shallow as they come, terrible technical performance, and almost nothing original to say, Tales of the Shire disappoints every step of the way. There’s hints of a better game to be found in its slightly more robust cooking mechanics, as well as the occasionally amusing writing and dialogue that prove this setting was indeed ripe for a life sim if executed better – but like a Silmaril, those dreams have vanished deep in the depths of Angband.

The Shire is known to be a warm, inviting, beautiful place that’s teeming with life. With its drab environments, one-dimensional characters, and repetitive gameplay, Tales of the Shire never quite manages to capture that Tolkien-esque whimsy. The game promises a Stardew Valley-like experience set in the rich The Lord of The Rings universe, but ultimately, it fails to deliver on both fronts.
