I finished the game on 09/19/2021 but I am only doing today on 10/22/2021 Arise's analysis in metacritic.Eu
I had 70 hours in-game and on Steam in total I had 90 hours in real life.
It's definitely the best Tales of I've played in the franchise. my favorite so far was the Berseria released in 2016.
    Now my top 3 is:

    Tales of Arise
    Tales of Berseria
    Tales of Vesperia

3 Tales of games that I highly recommend to you all. Tales of Arise is 10/10 and lives up to fan expectations.

Incredible game and story. If anyone says It's boring and predictable they most likely didn't finish it, as it has several cliffhangers nobody could ever expect, but they come later on in the story.

Would love more mob and quest variety and some points of the story feel too slow, that's why I won't give it a 10.

    Graphic and performance-wise It's an absolute 10.

It's kind of hard to understand all the mystic stuff in the ending, but it was surely great. The music is fantastic in some parts of the game. The sounds could have been richer in the levels but of good quality. I give it 85%. I like the love story but it was a bit too much information at times. I strongly recommend the game but I think that with the amount of combats, it's best to do this game in story mode. Expand

Okay so I'm roughly 20 hours into the game; and so far my impression of this game is: WOW! What a great ride. There are some minor things that bother me about the game (foremost jerky running/sprinting animations, but also configuration problems with the game's engine that need to be manually fixed) but we'll get to that further down.

Okay so lets break down the good and the bad (with the bad, as I mentioned, being minor things):

    The Good

+Engaging story and characters (very cliche and overly fantastical, but isn't that to be expected in a fantasy?)
+Engaging gameplay mechanics: fun and flashy combat, awesome customization, crafting, etc.
+VERY good presentation (minus running animation - get to that later): Beautiful and cozy environments, extremely well done character and monster designs, and just over all great design everywhere. Good animation for the most part, minus the running animations which i will get to.
+A great and epic musical soundtrack and a great ambiance (in terms of audio - heck, in terms of everything)
+Rewarding progression system, such as learning new "artes" and "skills", attributes, etc. But also, meeting and teaming up with new characters, all of which feel original and unique. Crafting new gear, etc etc.
+Sufficiently engaging and challenings boss fights (which of course can be scaled down or tuned up to one's liking with difficulty settings)

    The Bad

-jerky and "floaty" running animations, ESPECIALLY while sprinting and simultaneously changing direction. It just looks "off". Almost as if the characters are running on an invisible conveyor belt or something. Even though running without sprinting looks slightly less jarring, if you for example run in circles, it can induce this percieved animation "stutter" that is very jarring. But its manageable, just a shame that failing on such a crucial part of the presentation was overlooked.

-The game is absoutely beatiful and runs well for the most part (no matter what you do though, there's minor stuttering/micro fps drops for split seconds when traversing the map, or at the initiation of battles for example, it is jarring, but manegable because it doesn't happen too often. However the biggest issue is that the game has very short draw distance on environments and npcs "hard coded" (but can be fixed). But that's not all, the game also (no matter what you set in the game's graphics menu) sets a lower incorrect resolution. Mine was set to 720p even though i had it set to 1080p. It also has lower texture, shadows, effects, etc etc than what the engine can actually handle, and this is once again despite having the "max" settings in the graphics menu in-game. This can however, as I've already mentioned, be fixed manually. Anyone reading this, just google "how to make tales look how its supposed to" (steam forum), and also google "tales of arise npc draw distance pop in" (should be a reddit thread). Hopefully this will be patched so people don't need to do all this time-consuming stuff when they just want to play the game they payed a lot of money for. But in the end it's worth it. 9/10

This review is for old fans of the series who may be hesitant to try Arise. I fell in love with Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Destiny as a kid, and up until Berseria I preordered every Tales-like game I could get my grubby hands on. I've been increasingly disappointed with each 3d release for various reasons, however, until I finally threw up my arms and decided maybe I've just outgrown the series. I vowed never to preorder a Tales game again.

    My gripes with the Tales series boils down to;
    - Characters either got way to angsty or way too squeaky
    - Levels were too big and empty and felt like they were built using assets from a scrapped MMORPG
    - Writing that felt like the writers never played the game or saw it in action
    - inconsistent art direction between characters, enemies, and environments
    - combat that felt needlessly gated in certain ways for the illusion of complexity

Tales of Arise hits different though.

First of all the art direction has improved greatly over the last couple of games. Everything feels like it inhabits the same world. There was a graphical overhaul done to the game before its release and I think taking a final pass over it was the best thing they could have done.

Characters are well designed and NOT annoying. I can't think of one Tales game where there wasn't one character I just refused to utilize simply because of how annoying their characterization was.

It was also the first 3d Tales game where I found myself switching the controlled character a LOT, I found more than one character enjoyable to play when I usually just stick to whoever can whippety-whap the fastest.

The writing is still long winded and every character has to tell you how they feel every time you move through a doorway, I found myself skipping all of the skits again. But that's okay, I've already learned how to human in my old age, I don't need to enjoy everything about the game to appreciate it.

Combat has far fewer constraints on it than previous titles, cooldowns are short and you can switch between characters quickly. Each character's gimmicks are pretty simple to pick up and actually fun to use. Nobody feels wasted.

    Give it a go.

Since it suits the theme of the game and nature very well :D (Don't skip opening "Hibana" 10/10) -The combat in the game is just pure joy, the skill tree system the weapons upgrade availability and the difficulty to get thisr mats is also perfect, the combat is very engaging with beautiful ultimate animations too :)

I kinda loved this game. The art and graphics are beautiful. I like the characters and story though the story kinda got a bit worse in the last third of the game. I loved the ending. I really connected with the characters and their relationships. The gameplay was fun enough but nothing special. I can't really decide if i want to give it a 9 or a 10. But for now i'll leave it at a 9.

The beginning is a little bit bland, but it really picks up and the story goes for a long time (I think it's longer than most single player games releasing now). Most importantly, the characters, although somewhat one-dimensional, are wonderful, and the story, although cheesy, is engaging, interesting, and emotional.
I finished the game with a strong feeling of melancholy that I was leaving this world and these characters that I had shared so much time with. In gaming, this is a feeling I most strongly associate with JRPGs, not any JRPGs, but the really great ones, and Tales of Arise is a really great one.

The story is really long but it is captivating and full of surprises and i wasn't bored not even a single minute. All characters are great, I loved how relationships between characters were gradually strengthening during story. Graphics are pretty cool and soundtrack is epic (very suitable for a fantasy game). I also adore outfits, some you acquire during game and some u have to buy, if you want to wear them. As for combat, I think it's pretty simple to learn and it's fun.

I had a really fun time playing Tales of Arise and, after almost 100 hours spent with the game, when I think back what I enjoyed the most, I think the answer is “mostly all of it” but, particularly, it’s the combat.

The improved action combat never felt boring to me, never felt like a chore and always made me want to engage into those enemies while roaming around the different areas, I barely skipped any enemies because the combat is just enjoyable.
The one thing I would’ve loved as an extra bonus is the ability to cancel artes, or at least the normal attacks, into a dodge, but it is what it is, I got used to it.
The different playstyles of each party member were also very well realized, there wasn’t a character I didn’t like and using them was very fun and interesting.
The Boost Attacks and Strikes mechanic works pretty well and the epic animations that happen for the Strikes aren’t long at all, so it’s always a joy watching them over and over, they’re really well done.

This game uses Unreal Engine 4 and I think it was a good decision to switch to a modern and versatile engine at last, because the older custom engine was showing its age.
With UE 4, Arise shows that it’s a good engine for JRPGs, and especially combined with the new graphical effect they chose for the graphics here.

But the PC port has launched with certain flaws, like a very poorly implementation of Steam Input, which made certain Xbox Controllers not work for many people, and needed to tinker with the Steam Settings, or a severe lack of proper Draw Distances that makes any NPC disappear from view 10 meters away from the player, and not only NPCs but also Shadows and most Geometry in general, had very obvious popping issues.

The game also had resolution issues on certain screen setups, lack of proper ultra-wide support and stuff like that.
Some of the issues have been partial or fully fixed by some awesome members of the community but, that’s no excuse, and Bandai Namco should at least release a proper patch for all these issues. They’ll probably take their sweet time though, if the issues are ever officially patched, that is : )

Aside from those problems, which won’t affect everyone in the same way, my personal experience was that of a game that runs relatively smoothly, I had zero crashes or performance issues, so in the end my experience was quite enjoyable, once I downloaded a mod to increase the View Distance.
On my R5 3600 and RTX 3060 Ti the game runs quite fine even at 1620p DSR Downsampling and after I used a mod to unlock the Unreal Console, I could raise the internal scale to 170-180% and still stay at 60 FPS.

The story in Arise is quite “familiar” if you have played other games in the series, or JRPGs in general, with the usual twists and turns. I liked it, and the characters are well written and acted.
Played in English voices, and instantly recognizing Ray Chase as Alphen (Noctis from FFXV), and Erica Lindbeck as Shionne (Magilou from Berseria, Vita from Trails of Cold Steel) was quite fun, and the actors for the rest of the cast also did a really good job.

Having Alphen react to fish in the water reminded me instantly of Final Fantasy XV, which had incredible fishing mechanics, it was so fun, so hearing the same voice actor say similar lines here was quite a throwback. He’s not the fishing expert in Arise though, but that’s okay, because Kisara is also a really excellent character.

The new format for Skits, being fully 3D presented in a comic-panels style does work very well, I still like Zestiria and Berseria’s skits more, when it comes to style, but the new ones really made me realize that the change wasn’t bad at all, and I loved some of the more funny ones, there are a ton of them.

The soundtrack in general is really high quality, and the new battle theme is very good, reminded me of some of Nihon Falcom’s themes, which is a good thing, but then some of the most epic pieces are just used in areas where you don’t expect such ominous music, like just walking around or something, haha, but that’s alright.
The “Formidable Foe / Giant Zeugle” theme is back and remade for this game, once again, and that’s also nice to listen to when fighting these giant enemies.
Overall, sound design could’ve been a little bit better because once in combat the music is quite overshadowed by the characters voices but…that’s usually what happens in the Tales series.

All in all, this is one of my favorites games this 2021, I have enjoyed great JPRGs on the PC this year, like Trails of Cold Steel IV and Ys IX, both magnificent games with most excellent PC ports, and then with Arise I had a lot of great times with it, just as much as with those other two JRPGs I mentioned, despite the port not being up to those standards, but still quite enjoyable nonetheless.
An 8/10 due to the mild PC port issues, hopefully they patch it.

Beyond the eye-roll inducing plot and cast, the combat isn't much better. What initially seems like a mildly entertaining combo based hack-and-slash devolves into clear evidence that Bandai Namco only publishes Dark Souls. Particle effects make the dodge system a moot point, since you can't see anything, and the bosses have more hp than Hewlett-Packard. A thorough waste of time in every regard, and a truly sorry waste of money.

You'll start out mashing buttons at the beginning and a bit later be fighting with fluid combos as you juggle enemies through the air. Its a super fun progression!

The story is great, and takes a bit of a dark turn. I've never played a tales game before so i cant really compare this one to them, but overall i really enjoyed the story in this. I wont spoil anything, but i think most people will really enjoy it.

The music itself is amazing. It perfectly sets the mood, and gets you pumped up during fights.

For some issues though, later in the game there's a lot of special effects. The moves you use in fights cause a lot to go on and it can get really hard to see what's happening around you. There's also a bit of pop in when wandering around.

Overall its a very fun experience. If you like action games or JRPGs I'd say its a must have. If not, then maybe skip it or wait for a sale.

This instalment alone makes me excited for what comes next for the series, and frankly I have sincerely enjoyed my over 50 hours with this game and counting. The game falls short of a perfect 10 due to some questionable decisions with DLC content, prices and restrictions, alongside a dragging experience towards the end of the story which slightly overstays it's welcome. The second half of the game particularly falls somewhat short in how it overstays its welcome in classic RPG-padding fare, yet the subplot is filled with strange twists, lateral commentary to the real world, and enthralling characters which I personally enjoyed thoroughly. Some people have said the combat is button spam, but that’s not really the case at all. There’s an elemental system in the game which give strength and weaknesses to different characters in n each fight. There’s also a really fun combo system where I feel like I’m always trying to string together the longest combo I can get. If you spam attacks in this game it probably won’t take long to die, or you could probably stand to tune up the difficulty.

This is my first time playing this series (except for Symphonia, but I was very little and don’t remember much so I’m counting it out.) The ensemble cast is really fun and dynamic and have lots of lighthearted moments in between the serious story, which is common for a JRPG but is something I always like. I heard that there’s some features that series veterans have had mixed reactions to the changes made, but I can’t really speak to that.

It’s not one of my top favorites of all time (at least maybe not yet) but it’s still totally sucked me in and I spend multiple hours a day playing that feels like 15 minutes, and when I’m not playing, I’m thinking about playing. It’s that kind of game for me.

One thing to note, as it might turn off some is the amount of grinding. It’s not unusual for a jrpg to be heavy on the grind, but it’s slow paced even at low levels. This normally would bother me, but as I said, the combat is so fun that I’m always waltzing into it by choice.

The negative reviews seem to be people that are just tired of the genre, the series, or just enjoy having unpopular opinions. If you are new to the series like me, I think this is a really good place to start.

Gameplay 5/5 At fist I thought it was a turn based RPG as a lot of my friends told it was like final fantasy from sakaguchi era. But I really liked this action RPG approach. I also played scarlet nexus earlier this year. My biggest complain was you can't change characters in battle so tales of arise is a better experience for me. still i wish the enemy design was a little bit better
characters 5/5 Thats the best part of the game even if the story at the end is a bit messy but the characters easily fills the gap. They are memorable and likable
Overall a great game definitely recommended. even if you dont know anything about tales of you will still like this game

    * completely and utterly linear plot--not a single decision to be made anywhere
    * side quests that are mostly "go out and kill this because it's a problem for me", which is utterly ridiculous when the problem enemy is surrounded by other infinitely respawning enemies
    * overly convenient salesmen and crafting. How did those merchants just happen to be placed in the right spots on the map?
    * invisible walls galore
    * HP spongey enemies

To compound all of this, you have a party of extremely chatty individuals who point out the obvious ad nauseam. Eighty percent of the dialogue could be removed without affecting the coherence of the story. Typical dialogue:
"We're here, but we have to go over there."
"I don't know how I feel like going over there. I'm finally going to discover something new about myself and this world."
"I think we should go over there."
"I'm not sure how I feel about going over there."
They walk ten steps to over there.
Same conversation. But now they're not sure how they feel about being over here and needing to go somewhere else. Meanwhile I'm screaming inside.

The problem with this game's storytelling is that it spells out things that should be silently treated as mutually understood by the characters. In other words, it doesn't separate the latent message from the overt one. When depicting an exotic society, it is their social norms that make them interesting. In this case, where some enslaved people were rebelling against their oppressors, there was a lot of potential to develop the characters by showing them through their assumptions and misconceptions about their lives and world. But no. They spell everything out for the audience repeatedly, as if it has zero imagination and the attention span of a goldfish.

But at least the story is coherent. I'll give it that. On the other hand, it uses the cliche crutch of magic soul crystals the properties of which it discusses ad nauseam too.

The combat was just fun enough for me finish the game once. The enemies mostly feel the same and so do the fights. The average enemy requires some two hundred jabs and slashes to go down. It doesn't seem to feel the impact of those slashes, nor do your characters when they get hit. Often I only realized that I was being attacked when eyeing my HP bar. Maybe they had attack animations and maybe not. Fights are such a spinning cacophony I often couldn't tell what was going on. For example, I still don't know how to counter exactly, even though the game stats said I did it more than three hundred times.

On the plus side, it's a long game. They actually resolve everything in the end.

I've been a fan of the tales series ever since Tales of Symphonia. It felt like a group of friends going on an adventure to save the world. The dungeons, monsters, and traveling the party did made it all a great escape. Tales of Arise is similar, but the game has a darker approach and the characters are no longer chibi, making the visuals feel more mature. These are all things I welcome, as I am well into adult hood now. However, the overworld is replaced by linear areas, with the main form of travel being fast travel. This took away a bit of the immersion. I understand the devs may have taken out the overworld because traveling did become a little tedious later in the old Tales games, but I felt the immersion was worth it.

The combat system is one of the biggest changes. Arise has perfect dodging, which is a great addition. Timing and reflex was now a necessary skill to have. I love perfect dodging, parry, perfect shielding in any games. I'm a big fan of QTEs, as long as it isn't spammed too hard. The fighting animations, the visuals of the attacks all had an omph, and it felt good to cut down enemies.

The huge issue however, is the party strategy management, and the enemy HP pool. Bosses specifically are the worst. They have massive HP pools, you can hardly see their HP dwindle unless you stared at ot every 5 mins. It's ridiculous. All those epic attacks you dish out, all those crazy animations mean jack all when after a really strong looking charged up boost attack ends up cutting down less than 0.01% of the bosses' HP bar. As the game progresses the bosses become more and more like damage sponges. It also doesn't help that my entire party are squishy af. A regular boss attack can take away half of a characters' HP. Meaning 2 or 3 regular hits, and my characters' gone. This means a lot of CP is needed to heal and revive. This CP gauge usually runs out about 10% way into the fight, which then I have to use CP recovery items, which cost a fortune. Buying 10 will wipe out all the currency you've collected. Clearly the devs did not intend for the players to use that much. so what to do? Well, there is the strategy modifier. This is where I could customize and change the party's strategy mid-fight. There defensive strats, and offensive strats. The problem is even the most defensive strats, my party eventually dies. There's no option to have my party run away, and dodge everything. Eventually, they're gonna be retarded and get hit by a couple attacks and die, or I'd have to waste precious CP on them. I blame this on poor AI design. There's also no option to have the AI heal ONLY ME. When I set it to heal, they bring back the idiot AI, and guess what, they'll die again in a few seconds. Absolute headache. Change strats was also not very intuitive. I'd have to pause the game and press a button a couple times to set the strat I want. This broke the pace, which I'd have to keep doing it every minute. FF13 is a game that relies on strategy change as well, but it could be done on the go without breaking any pace. That's how it should've been done!

There is the option to have the AI use only long range spells. This meant I'd have to go through every single one of their spells and see which were long range and didn't have long charge times. This was way too tedious for me. I play a Tales game to hack and slash and have a blast. Not micro-manage AI behavior. I'd be playing an RTA or turn based RPG if I wanted to do that. This is real time combat for f*** sakes, akin to Kingdom Hearts, God of War and the like. I DON'T want to be micro-managing, especially mid-fight.

Overall, this game is a huge disappointment, which is really unfortunate because I loved where the story was going. Shionne was also a really interesting character. The topics the story touched on were mature, like discrimination, and oppression. The dynamics between the characters were also kind of interesting.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Character X died after you've known him for two hours of game time? Suddenly that character is the main driving point of character development for two main characters. Its just so bland and comes out of nowhere, it hurts.

The chemistry between the main cast leaves very much to be desired. It also changes drastically in a matter of minutes - at one time, it looks like there's finally some character development coming your way, characters are going past some hurdles, coming to terms with other character's flaws, just to be mad at them a couple minutes later for the same things they've seemingly came to terms with.

Also, when will developers finally realise that removing powers from the main character after a big plot point is just an awful mechanic, that brings nothing but being annoying to deal with.

Its not a bad game, but mostly it has the gameplay itself going for it. Story-wise, its really bad. Pay-offs are non-existant, character development is awful.

I always give priority to story telling which is the soul for a movie or a game and this game is doing overwhelmingly good. Gameplay also well made for an RPG but seems there is few lack of elements on itemizations. Also some repetitive voice acts are also a bit pesky. But overall this is the RPG you must play if you are hungry the genre.

My first Tales of game and what a game it was. Great chracters, world, music and all around plot. The combat is flashy and fun. Looking forward to playing more of the series.

Having played a good number of Tales games this is the best one since Vesperia.
The characters are great as is the interaction between them. The two main characters for me have the best writing and are some of the best characters in any game ever.
The action is fast paced and simple but with a high celling if you spend the time to master it. Last mentions that the soundtrack is awesome

godawful combat balance, i just cant recommend this game for its price. If you like spamming the same button and relying on healing items then this game is for you. I need games where i need to use my brain.

Main issue is that once you learn the most powerful move relatively early on, to save time you start spamming it constantly. There is not much incentive to vary things up as that single move is most powerful by far. By the end of it I turned the difficulty down to very easy to not waste time grinding and be done with it. There are some interesting mechanics for future games here, so I'll look out for the next instalment! Chemistry between the main leads was cute though. Expand

Love Tales of Arise, has a wonderful cast of 6 unique characters. Great gameplay, beautiful atmosphere and a good soundtrack that sometimes is blasted a bit too loud. Only complaint is sometimes AI team just fail miserably.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tales of Arise is the next game in a popular Japanese RPG series launched by Tales of Phantasia, which was released on console named SNES in 1995. The game is developed by a subsidiary studio of Bandai Namco Entertainment. It takes place in a universe that combines action, fantasy and science fiction elements. The plot of the game revolves around two planets, Dahna and Rena. The inhabitants of the latter have been plundering the precious resources of the former for the past several hundred years. The game tells the story of a group of heroes from different sides of these two conflicts. Tales of Arise is a continuation of ideas from previous games. The game world can be freely explored and fulfilled numerous missions. The world has a partially open structure and is completely three-dimensional. The game mechanics are highly arcade combat based. Players have access to a wide variety of attacks and special techniques, and can improve their reflexes from their heroes' abilities through the outcome of battles. Improvement of character stats and better equipment collection system also play an important role in this process. Tales of Arise offers three-dimensional visuals designed in a highly cartoon-like style. The game is developed with Unreal Engine 4. It is enriched with animated cutscenes developed by the famous anime studio Ufotable. The game has a size that can vary between 50-100 hours in terms of content. Expand

Very visually beautiful game, concepts in the story started very strong, I did very much enjoy the characters. I put about 40 hours into it and the first 30 were a joy, but the latter 10 or so kind of turned into nonsense. Overall if you have a tolerance for story lines that become convoluted and some grinding then I think you will enjoy this.

    Mon tout premier Tales Of.

It’s not an absolute slam dunk for the return of the Tales series, but it’s a solidly-crafted JRPG with a great battle system and fabulous environments to adventure through. It’s a shame the dialogue and story don’t match the stellar work done elsewhere, but on the whole it’s still a trip well worth taking.

If you don’t mind the cliché story, you’ll probably enjoy Tales of Arise – it has good graphics, good pacing and fluid (if a bit too easy) combat. [Issue#256, p.64]

The Tales series makes a triumphant return with Arise, a game that delivers excellent, highly polished RPG action that stands above its predecessors. Despite being a RPG, Tales of Arise features a rich combat system that makes the title contend with some of the best action games released this year.
