Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon delivers a refreshingly dark and engaging RPG experience with a strong narrative, a reimagined take on familiar mechanics, and a world that feels both mythic and original. Fans of classic Bethesda titles who’ve been left cold by Oblivion Remastered should absolutely give this one a shot.

I’m always keen to dive into an RPG, and open-world RPGs provide a satisfying level of freedom. However, if the storytelling isn’t there, interest can fade quickly. Tainted Grail: The Fall Of Avalon doesn’t just hold that interest; it keeps piquing it. When you build your world upon an established legend, it can be tempting to let the existing elements do all the heavy lifting. Here, that legend is simply the starting point and helps color the world, but the new lore is what truly brings it to life! If you are a fan of the Arthurian legend, you might well enjoy this furthering of the stories. If you enjoy open-world RPG games, then definitely grab a copy!

It’s easy to forgive a little jank, though, when the overall package is this impressive. Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is an epic RPG that aims high and that, much more often than not, succeeds in what it sets out to do. With everything happening with Microsoft and its studios right now, who knows when Elder Scrolls VI will finally come out, so it’s probably worth giving a game like this a chance in the meantime because it’ll surely scratch that itch.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is an incredible western RPG that draws big inspiration from Bethesda games of old. While the latest similar games like Starfield and Avowed failed to capture the essence of these kinds of games, Tainted Grail does so perfectly. It does not hold the players’ hand and encourages them to explore every inch of the map, and there will always be something to find. And with an incredibly competitive AA price point, I wholeheartedly recommend this game to every RPG player.

Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon may not boast the most detailed graphics or the smoothest character animations, but it makes up for it with epic landscapes and masterful lighting. While it adheres to standard RPG conventions, it modernizes many of them in mechanically smart and—most importantly—fun ways. There's a deep skill tree, satisfying gear progression, and a wealth of playstyle options. Yet, the real standout is the storytelling: dark, gripping, and full of meaningful choices and unexpected twists. If there’s one thing that can be said for certain, it’s that Fall of Avalon is a superbly written adventure set in a hauntingly captivating world.

A deliciously old-fashioned open-world RPG, that harkens back to a seemingly bygone era of pure gaming fun.
  7. Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a dark fantasy open-world RPG inspired by Arthurian legend. With deep character builds, rich lore, and tactical combat, it’s a must-play for RPG veterans—despite some technical flaws.

While Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon may not shine from a technical standpoint and can feel like a patchwork of successful ideas reassembled in a new way, pulling off such a feat was far from easy. The developers never hid their (notable) sources of inspiration and have instead crafted a love letter to open-world role-playing games, brought to life through a compelling and well-executed dark fantasy atmosphere—one capable of winning over genre enthusiasts and, perhaps, drawing in newcomers as well. It took some time in early access to reach this point, but it was undoubtedly worth the wait.

The developers of Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon define it as a love letter to open world RPGs as if the game were just a tribute to the cornerstones of the genre such as Skyrim or Oblivion, when in reality we are faced with a production with great personality, spectacular from an artistic point of view and with a plot intricate enough to glue us to the monitor for a long time. The gameplay does not aim to revolutionize the genre, but offers everything you could want from a modern RPG, reinterpreting the story of King Arthur in a dark key and full of exciting combat.

The mixture of Skyrim and a dark version of the Arthurian legend gets the essentials right. Even the outdated graphics are hardly a problem.

I think that Tainted Grail could have benefited from more time in development even though it had already been a couple of years since the demo dropped. Though it often stumbles over the technical weight of its own creative ambition, Tainted Grail has the makings of a phenomenal RPG — but readers just might want to hold off until that weight has been lifted.

It's hard to avoid Skyrim-comparisons when talking about this game, but Awaken Realms still manages to craft their own distinctive dark fantasy world around the familiar bones.

Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon is a bizarre and fascinating blend of classic high-fantasy trappings and Giger-inspired architecture that feels like a living death metal album. From presentation to mechanics, it wears its Elder Scrolls inspiration on its sleeve, but it does enough with its story and artistic direction to stand alone as a compelling package. Some of the glitches are frustrating given how long the game spent in Early Access, but they never elevated beyond annoyances and don't stop this from being an easy game to recommend for fans of the genre.

The Fall of Avalon is a bold and ambitious RPG that excels in world-building, layered storytelling, and punishing difficulty. It’s designed for players with patience and a strong background in role-playing, offering a deep, challenging adventure for those willing to invest the time.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is an excellent action RPG that follows the gameplay mechanics of games like Oblivion and Skyrim. Artistically and creatively inspired, it unfortunately shows some limitations on the technical side. The bugs, especially on PC, are numerous and in some cases make the experience frustrating.

Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon is a very ambitious project from a young indie studio. It has traveled a long road in early access to reach this point, but it was well worth it.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is not trying to reinvent the RPG genre—but it does reclaim something many games have lost: a sense of danger, weight, and consequence. Its combat is deliberate and punishing, its world compact but meaningful, and its progression system encourages thoughtful experimentation. There are still technical flaws to address—especially in melee hit detection and UI responsiveness—but with version 1.0, the game finally feels like a complete vision. It’s a dark, grounded experience that doesn't seek to flatter the player, only to challenge them. And in doing so, it finds its own voice.

Despite some obvious influences, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon manages to be an excellent action RPG with an interesting, dark world to explore.

What makes The Fall of Avalon worth playing isn't just its reverence for classic RPGs, but how it reinterprets their ideas through a much darker lens. Questline's take on Arthurian myth is an intense and mature narrative, pulling players through a crumbling world where every choice feels like it might be the wrong one. There are lessons here, but more than anything, there's a story that feels like it was made for players who still crave consequence, immersion, and discovery in their RPGs. And while it might stumble in execution at times, it rarely loses sight of what it's trying to be.

If you're craving dark fantasy and want to lose yourself in an open world, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon isn't a bad game at all. That is if you can accept that it's a rough, raw experience that often feels like something out of a decade ago.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is not simply „Polish Skyrim”. It’s a well crafted RPG that surprises with great atmosphere, interesting story and the developers’ ingenuity when faced with limitations of the technical or budgetary nature.

It’s clear that The Fall of Avalon aims for Bethesda-level ambition without the resources to fully back it up. Still, beneath the rough edges lies a rich RPG experience that—when it works—keeps you engaged for hours.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon delivers what it promises: a love letter to the Western RPGs that marked an era and the hearts of many fans. However, it is clear that, to break through the niche bubble and truly stand out (as its greatest influences once did), more polish is needed in fundamental aspects, such as performance and difficulty.

While dark fantasy open-world RPGs are nothing new, Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon is an ambitious open-world RPG that backs up its comparisons to the greats and is a worthy newcomer in a saturated market.

The Fall of Avalon starts promisingly, but the contender for the title of Polish Skyrim exposes itself to an underdeveloped second half of the game. Still, it's worth giving it a chance.

Overall, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, has the framework necessary to be an excellent game, and provides a sort of different flavor of fantasy setting than a lot of its contemporaries. For those willing and able to put up with rough spots and a general feeling of unfinishedness, there are still 50+ hours of an enjoyable RPG experience here. It just might take some additional time and tweaking in order to fully deliver on its potential.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a solid, albeit flawed RPG. It features a robust skill tree system, an engaging story and half-decent combat. Unfortunately, a lot of the side quests leave much to be desired and certain components, such as stealth and athletics, aren’t as finely tuned as the rest. Having this revolve around King Arthur is an entertaining concept, but you’ll tend to forget he’s part of the plot most times. The world is tuned with a grungy, almost heavy metal aesthetic, but this striking visual art style is marred by most of the open world being on the dull side. Regardless, players who are fans of games such as The Elder Scrolls or Kingdom Come: Deliverance will get a kick out of Tainted Grail.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a good game and has the potential to be an excellent game with more patches and polish. It could become a very exciting title if the Questline development team eventually adds more depth to character-build mechanics through DLC, item design, or expansions. In its current state, it is a worthwhile experience if you are looking for another open-world RPG with an interesting storyline, lots of interesting areas to explore, and, at times, a spectacular-looking world setting. But don't expect a fully polished and bug-free experience.

The story of King Arthur in the dark suffers from the poor execution despite its great atmosphere.

Ultimately, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon succeeds at a lot of what it’s going for, and it cannot be overstated how successful the adaptation of the Arthurian legend is. Not everyone is going to resonate with the creepier, darker tone, and the game’s technical state leaves much to be desired. However, those that do resonate with it will find an interesting, complex, intelligent narrative with the player being used both as a framing device and a driving force.

There are a variety of weapons, abilities, items, and more at your disposal, as you would expect from a medieval dark fantasy. There are plenty of options to choose from so you can play your way, whether you want to go in stealthily or go in swinging. Playstyles can also be changed on the go, especially as you find new gear along the way. This is just a snippet of the overall picture of Tainted Grail. So far, the package we have been presented with feels familiar but also fresh and exciting, and I can’t wait to give you all a more in-depth breakdown.
