Bug? Where? Everywhere.
Camera? Yes, it is here. To watch absolutely unprecedented angles.
Story? Just like in porn movie. Maybe smart porn movie.
The worst Syberia game? Sure, it's a game called Syberia, but it has nothing to do with the series.

Not even close to "gold standard" of Syberia 1-2 quality. Worst adventure experience ever. Laggy as hell, buggy as hell, boring story, bad characters. Level of graphics and sound from 2000s. One of the biggest fails in games industry this year.

Read the PC gamer review, this game is worse than that. Horrifically buggy, ugly graphics which are not optimised.

The puzzles are not fun and to make it worse they usually have their own set of horrible controls and on top of they are timed, you might know how to solve the puzzles but end up getting annoyed at the horrible controls. Some puzzles are just trial and error and there is a few puzzles which make absolutely no sense (unlocking a certain door), I googled so see if this was a known way to open a door and there was 0 results for opening a door in the way the game suggested.
There are an insane amount of game breaking bugs (even with the update) that requires you to restart the game to fix a puzzle/screen, some screens load without half the assets and you walk around an invisible maze of where the stairs and platforms should be.

The game series should have been handed over to Telltale, at least they know how to make a 3D puzzle games!

Expand

It's hard to believe, but there's no possibility in this game to save whenever you want.
So, MAYBE, but just MAYBE, in a graphic adventure game, you could be stuck in some point.
And well, you give up, you can't go further. Maybe tomorrow will be better. So, tomorrow, just do again some parts you have just done several times, and MAYBE you won't find your path. And again, and again,

The cheesy villain with an eyepatch was just a cherry on the top. But what is the worst about this game is the technical design. It's still buggy and glitchy in 2021, the controls and camera are absolutely horrid - I ended up using gamepad as using a mouse was infuriating and my cursor was disappearing very often. When I got stuck in the game it was usually because I didn't find an item hidden in some corner impossible to see without the right angle of the terrible camera. Lip sync and animation of some characters looks very outdated and weird. Another thing that bothered me was the voice over of majority of characters. Everyone in Russia speaks perfect American accent and the voices usually don't match the age and look of the characters. Kate's voice over is from the original game and is still perfect. The puzzles were decent and the overall difficulty seemed to match previous games. Graphic design is really nice and it followed the strangely beautiful style of places which could have been find in the previous Syberia games. Soundtrack is probably the best part of this game. Overall I would not recommend this game to anyone as it was more painful than enjoyable. Expand

Although I've only played for a couple of hours thus far I can definitely say that it's very rough around the edges. So much so that they should have delayed it further. The main issues for me thus far:

- Movement/interaction: It's extremely clunky, especially on keyboard/mouse. Sometimes it completely breaks as your character moves on her own despite input.
- Camera angles: I know they probably are a staple of previous games but they just don't give any good or useful angles and are even contributing to the problem of movement. It simply would have been more appropriate with a 3rd person camera like that of e.g. Life is Strange or any of the Telltale games.
- Lip syncing: Aside from often being completely out of sync sometimes there's not even any voice at all for speaking characters.
- Poor optimization: Frame rates can dip down to 40 and 30 FPS even on high-end hardware, despite last-last gen graphics.
- Overall lack of polish: One example of this is in Dr. Olga's room near the beginning of the game where it's just completely silent. No sound effects, no music, not even any footsteps from your character. This lack of attention to sound design is prevalent throughout.
- Poor logic in many puzzles: It's easier with an example (minor spoiler).
As you visit Mr. Steiner in his shop he has a heart attack and you have to get him his medicine with haste. He will gladly complain about you not finding his medicine if you look at the wrong stuff but he simply won't tell you where to find it (why?).
Ultimately it becomes extremely contrived
and you end up having to spend half an hour or more finding that you have to turn back a clock to a random time in order for it to make tea and add pills to the tea which you can then give to Steiner...
These types of illogical puzzles are just tedious and should be left out in my opinion.

There are a couple of good- and potentially good things however:

+ Mechanical puzzles: Unlike in any other game I've played this is a very interesting and unique gameplay mechanic.
+ The game doesn't rely to much on previous storyline which means new players to the series (like me) can get into it. Though I was confused a couple of times who Oscar was. Like in Dreamfall Chapters, they should have added a recap video at the start of previous games.
+ Music is good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpFwrvuaGdc
+ Dialogue wheel: I always love having choice in what the protagonist says. Even if it's just an illusion of choice.

I will comment further on the overall story and characterization after I've finished the game. These were just my first few hours of impressions. Given these, I do not recommend the game currently. Especially not at €40, unless you're a hardcore fan of previous games. For everyone else, wait for it to be polished and reduced in price.

Technically this game is soooo bad, it should never be released. Mouse+keyboard controls is a joke. Graphic is so outdated, moving to full 3d made it even worse. Laggy on GTX1080, no widescreen support. Plot and characters are childish, don't even compare to previous installments.

So, I've probably played a good chunk of this game now. I had my expectations set low, as I didn't really know how this game would turn out. Before playing it, I thought it would be another tacked-on sequel, with no new ideas or personality.

I was pleasantly surprised.

The game follows Kate Walker, after being ditched by Voralburg. She's on the run after not returning the contract for the Voralburg factory, with accusations of embezzlement. However, she has the Yukals on her side on her journey.

About controls: they have changed since the first game. Don't get me wrong: this is still a point-&-click, but movement is controlled using the arrow keys. I guess you could say it's slightly clunky, but it works.

I personally think that the graphics are quite nice, however, that could be subjective. Some parts definitely look better than others, and I actually prefer the in-engine cutscenes to the pre-rendered ones. The graphics aren't any different to the trailers, so you can probably make judgement based on that.

Puzzles and story is where this game really shines. The story does a great job at continuing the adventure: and adventure there is. I've already experienced some plot-twists I've never saw coming, and I feel that the pacing is quite good. The puzzles are similar to the previous games, if not slightly easier (which is welcome to me, as I found the previous games pretty difficult).

The only criticism I would say is at the beginning, the game sets you down a narrow path. If you find an item, sometimes you cannot get it until someone points it out to you. This is pretty frustrating.

Overall though, this game feels like a Syberia game, and gets the tone right. A couple of technical issues are there, but they have not made me enjoy this game any less.

The game has serius optimization problems, the controls are nasty, Kate's movement is very slow, graphics are not very nice. The game does not support widescreen monitors, the highest resolution is 2560x1440, and the graphics settings do not have many options. Often there is lag between speeches and person's facial expressions. I am very dissaopointed.

run around…
click everything til something happens...
And once you have some stuff in your inventory... click everything else until something else happens to progress the game…
The puzzles here are actually pretty logical, so a guide isn’t really necessary for this game..
But does that mean the 8 and a half hours are fun to play through?
No
not at all…
The puzzles have way to many steps to them, bringing the game down to a constant crawl…
and none of the puzzles are interesting or make you feel clever
The answers are all obvious... you just have to go find the stuff and trade things for other things
They all feel like fetch quests..
Annoying roadblocks in the way of the story…
Which also isn’t good…

The lip syncing looks like they didn’t even try...
They probably didn’t actually...

The story was a bit mediocre, the characters simplistic and the runaround mundane. The puzzles weren't that challenging once one figures out there was an interaction point missed somewhere down the line - even when hints are enabled - that was somehow overlooked because the main character faced the wrong direction when walking by and didn't prompt. Other times, the interactive points went offscreen and had to reload from autosave.

Ah, autosave. There is only one save which you should backup periodically just in case and there is no way to save at any time. Technically possible, but I guess manual save had to go so people don't (easily) save-cheat on the 3-4 puzzles which have achievements attached doing them right the first time.

The camera was terrible at times, not changing perspective when needed, other times changing and the direction keys suddenly meant different directions so the character started running back where she came from. But the biggest enemy were the stairs on themselves or combined with the camera angle shift: I spent a minute trying to climb the stairs to go up and down because the direction keys had reverse meaning on the top compared to the bottom of the stairs.

The voicework is disappointing. The main character got the classical (English) voice from the previous versions but almost all the others have fresh young voices often sounding ridiculous when attached to a middle or old aged NPC. Other times, they sounded like the VO was recorded over the phone and not in a proper studio.

The story was also non-engaging, even though picking up from where v2 left off, the premise of getting from A to B while military C is chasing the group I was unable to identify with. Maybe I missed explanations in game but the stage was kind of arbitrary.

Maybe the only memorably thing was the music.

Story, immersion, characters, music, all I want to find with this type of game is here! I don't give the maximum score because of the animations which can be really poor and the end. But they will probably make Syberia 4 or a DLC so it's ok :)

Highlights:
• Overall, the journey is really enjoyable.
• The Syberia atmosphere is still there. The music is great.
• They kept the original voice actress for Kate Walker.
• Some funny moments can be found throughout the story.
• Solving puzzles is rewarding (a tip from me: when stuck, usually you can find most clues in the same room, just remember you can also move the camera around).

Lowlights:
• I'm the type of gamer that likes to explore everything, talk to everyone, see every corner of the map. However, here I preferred to just stay on the objective due to the cumbersome controls. Sluggish movement, difficulties using the stairs and sometimes small invisible walls are getting in your way. Camera is bugged in certain places. My suggestion is to try both K&M and Gamepad and see what works best for you. Personally, I preferred K&M.
• There was one puzzle where I got stuck and after minutes trying to figure it out, I finally looked it up online and turned out I was doing the right thing. It was just the cumbersome controls preventing me from doing it smoothly.
• Mouse cursor randomly disappears and you have to move it around until you hit an interaction point so that it reappears. Moving your gamepad joystick can also help bring back the cursor.
• No manual save option. There is only auto-save and you can't go back to previous chapters to hunt for achievements.
• This game was initially planned to be released in 2010 instead of 2017. Some graphic elements are not even up to 2010 standards though, apart from character models which are good.
• There are some cutscenes which are just pre-rendered gameplay. It doesn't look any better than the actual gameplay, there are no advanced animations or graphics; it even looks worse actually, as it is rendered at low bitrate. Some cutscenes are nice though.
• The motivation of the bad guy doesn't seem realistic. The story could have been better without him.
• Voice acting is hit or miss. There are side characters with good voice acting and then there are characters whose voice doesn't even fit their appearance e.g. grandpa sounding like he's in his 20s.
• Really bad lip sync and facial animations. At times, you may stumble upon a decent facial animation here and there, a smile, a frown, a smirk etc.
• Minor audio glitches.
• Some inconsistent subtitles.

Small bugs and frustrating controls tarnish what is otherwise an appealing adventure romp across a light fantasy setting of rural Russia.

I had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately there are just too many bugs and playing the game is painstaking. The game just feels clunky. But you gotta love the fact that people still make adventure games.

Техническая часть игры (управление) просто убога - 0, сюжет на 5. Только музыка хороша - 10. Только из-за музыки 5/10 (и по формуле среднего арифметического числа тоже 5)

I love Syberia series, because it was my starting point to adventure genre. Well, to be honest I don't play this game for long time, because I know that this game is bad, buut I didn't expect sooo bad experience in every aspect.

I love Syberia series, because it was my starting point to adventure genre. Well, to be honest I don't play this game for long time, because I know that this game is bad, buut I didn't expect sooo bad experience in every aspect.

Visual (4/10) Graphics is average, at least we have new Kate and Oscar models, but locations looks really terrible. It feels that everything except Kate and Oscar just bad copy paste dev models, that should be replaced. I liked only one location - park in Baranour, it reminds me set of locations from first Syberia.
Music is also average, not so bad, but we listen only 1-2 similar songs and ambient theme all game, so for me it feels annoying.
Interface - it was pain in my "back" all the time. All game time I spend just to point proper way to location. At the Olimpia level I even restart game several time because I get to dead end and don't understand how I should point Kate way out. Even more if you can handle with your way - you will face with lots of bugs with bag and interaction circles.

Gameplay (5/10) Gameplay is awfull - locations are badly designed. You can run through several just empty screens for nothing, almost everything is badly scripting - for example in latest location on the bridge you need to speak on ALL themes with Kurk, before custom oficer will came. On the other hand I think some puzzles are really fun to solve, especially last one and puzzle with mirrors. Adding more mouse controls to open smth or turn is very controversal I also don't like this part very much because of pure in game realization.

Story (2/10) One point for Kate and another one for Oscar. Story is ridiculus, with lots of confusing moments, so if you like Syberia, you should be prepared that story was written by 12 year old teen as fandom.

All in all, instead of great adventure as Syberia was originaly, you just play with some puzzles and saw Kate and Oscar one more time, just to prepare yourself befor final Syberia chapter.

Horribly broken to the point of being unplayable. Story and characters have nothing to do with previous games. Worst point and click I ever played.
Just play Syberia 1&2 and avoid the rest!

Some decent puzzles and nice references to the old classics but the game mechanics are horrendous. Camera control and character movement is a game breaker. Hard to finish.

A sloppy sequel to a great game marred with decade-old problems.

I'm sorry that Syberia got to the end like this, and it's probably my last memory of this game. Unfortunately, this Kate's adventure is not worth playing, even if it was in a discount. [Issue#275]

Somewhere under all that technical and gameplay-related mess you can catch a glimpse of good old Syberia, but overall the game is so poor that as a fan of the series it made me want to hurt myself. [06/2017, p.52]
