I think Hotline Miami did this better, much due to it's visuals, audio, and enemy/weapon variety. SUPERHOT doesn't really use its gimmick to propel itself very far and there are not all that many weapons to use or different enemies to fight. It feels lesser, and it's arguable if the price justifies the content amount.

However, what's there is decently fun just out of the fact that slow motion is satisfying and the Hotline Miami formula is a good one. Would pick up on a sale.

The core game mechanic is amazing, but it ships with a pretentious unskippable story that's barely related to the core gameplay. And it's super short. Such a shame, should've been a GOTY contender.

Neat little gameplay gimmick, but just didn't really hold my interest even over the short playtime. Plot is basically a shoddy ripoff of Pony Island that doesn't fit the game. Tries to go all spooky meta-narrative for no real reason than it's popular in the indie scene these days. At one point early on the player character in the game is told over text by a spooky mysterious entity to close the game and never play it again. This is where you're supposed to launch the game again in defiance so you can play more, but I just kept my promise and closed the game, never reopened to this day. While this is probably true, what it doesn’t tell you is that the game is only about two hours long, is extremely simple, and yet retails for $25.

SUPERHOT is a very simplistic game with a very cool central mechanic – time moves at an incredibly slow rate of speed, to the point where bullets are crawling through the air towards you as they’re shot. The catch is that when you take actions – picking stuff up, moving around, firing your own weapon – time temporarily moves at normal speed.

Thus, this game is basically like being in bullet time all the time, except when you’re moving.

That is the central conceit of this game, and what little there is revolves around it. As much a puzzle game as a FPS, the real goal of this game is to figure out how to kill all of the enemies which are often coming at you from multiple directions without getting killed yourself. Time progressing at a very slow rate won’t stop you from being gunned down from behind or dying in a hail of bullets down a narrow hallway. Moreover, your own weapons have sharply limited ammo clips and rates of fire, which means that you are constantly having to throw your weapons away (stunning your enemies in the process) to nab new ones.

The game really centers around this – firing your weapon, tossing it (and whatever nearby pick-upable objects you can) at people to make them drop their weapons, grabbing the dropped weapons out of midair, and repeating the process. And in the end, while this is pretty cool in one sense, the game is very limited in another.

There’s only one type of enemy – the red dude – and there are only five types of weapon – pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, baseball bats, and katanas. The pistol fires slowly, the shotgun fires a couple of blasts before you have to toss it away, the assault rifle fires off four bullets in rapid succession with no waiting between bursts, the baseball bat is a bad melee weapon, and the katana is a one-hit kill melee weapon which can be thrown at people to impale them or even slice bullets in half in midair.

All of this SOUNDS really cool, but honestly in practice the game doesn’t feel nearly as cool as it sounds to play. I feel like the central mechanic is really neat, but the limited environments, the limited environmental interaction, the fact that I didn’t have other neat powers (like, say, wall-running or something similar), the fact that the weapons were all kind of samey, and the fact that bullets felt surprisingly slow even in supposed “real-time” all sort of contributed to the game not really feeling much like the power fantasy you’d expect. Rather, it is much more of a puzzle game, about using your attacks in the right order and positioning yourself properly while dodging bullets, as one shot will kill you and force you to start over the (very short) levels.

All in all, the game’s story mode (which is strange and does little to explain itself) takes about two hours to beat, and you’re likely to get bored with the game’s limited mechanics around the point that you beat it. There are challenge and endless modes, but there’s not much more to the game beyond that point, so what’s the point, really?

All in all, this feels like a very short diversion, and the $25 asking price is just not likely to leave you very happy. I got this as part of a bundle, and it was fine there, but as a stand-alone game, this is very much an indie project which feels sort of like a proof of concept for a future game down the line which will be much cooler.

It is somewhat interesting, but it isn’t really all that great, and it isn’t nearly as clever as it thinks it is. Innovative it may be, but it is really the most basic version of the mechanic there is; I hope someone else does something more interesting with the idea somewhere down the line.

SUPERHOT is one of those games that only a passionate team of indie developers could create. The concept of the game is simple but ingenious: time moves as fast as you do. This leads to a surprisingly tactical game which is almost like a turn-based real-time FPS. Every time you complete a level, it feels very satisfying and seeing the replay in real-time looks cool. Dodging bullets, switching into other enemies, grabbing guns, getting headshots etc. are all basic and rpetitive yet it never gets tiring because there's an element of tactical deliberation to your every move. Unlike a "constant-time" shooter, you really think about what you're doing and it's interesting how dynamic levels can feel. It's by no means an easy game, and much of the skill comes from being able to anticipate where enemies are going to be so that when you fire, your bullets will hit them. It's also about judging the timing. In most shooters, reloading, accuracy and positioning are instinctive - you don't think, you just do it. In SuperHot, due to the non-constant passage of time, you actually NEED to analyse the situation frame by frame; - a level of perfection which cannot possibly happen in other shooters.

Aside from the excellent gameplay concept, I have to admire both the art style and the lore of the game. It's a very minimalistic yet distinctive style: weapons are black, enemies are red, environment is white and any objects you can interact with are striped blue. This is not because the game is made using Unity or the lack of talent from artists. It's clearly a deliberate decision which makes the game more pure and, from a practical aspect, easier to play. If there was complex geometry and lots of colours and objects, it would be difficult to analyse the environment and react accordingly.

The game is presented as an old DOS-style terminal and includes many nice additions, including incredible ASCII art and implementations of "0-player games" such as Conway's game of life, Langdon's Ant and more. Once you're done with the game, you have plenty to keep you busy, including an endless survival mode, challenges (completing levels with certain restrictions), speedrun and even a real-time speed run mode, and even more things which I haven't unlocked yet.

Even though there are around 34 levels in the game, it'll only take you a couple of hours to finish it. However, given the unique concept and brilliant execution, I have to credit this game and recommend it; though not at full price. I got it on sale and don't regret it. It's also a game that works surprisingly well with a gamepad. I've had no performance issues with it on my Alienware Alpha R1 on highest graphics settings at 1080p, and the game looks great despite its minimalistic design. The only criticisms I have are the lack of variety in weapons and enemies and the lack of cloud saves. The save game is located in your user profile AppDataLocalLow folder and I have lost my save before; though luckily the game is so good I ddn't mind replaying the first two hours.

Unfortunately, having a slow time gimmick isn't enough to make Superhot's simplistic gameplay interesting for more than an hour. Levels play out the same, the novelty wears off and what you're left with is an incredibly barebones game with an overly edgy metanarrative that tries too hard to impress. Cool art style though.

However, I despise the ""story"" they try to jam down your throat as you play this game. It's not immersive even one tiny bit, it just pulls you out of the gameplay for chunks at a time while you try to find ways to skip as fast as possible until the next proper level. There's no other way to say this: the story is terrible and greatly reduces the quality of the experience. I say that as a video game story buff - I'm not just a gameplay only kind of guy.

The story is just obnoxious and thinks it's clever and funny when it is not close to either. The funny part is it would have been a great game if it had no story and just "shoot red guys" but the game literally mocks you for thinking that. Like a college hipster who is too cool for classes, it shoots condescending downward glances at the concept of "just shooting red guys." It shames you for only wanting to do that as if that wasn't the only reason anyone would want to play this game, ever. Newsflash devs: not one soul on Earth is ever gonna go "ooh let's play SUPERHOT I heard it's got a wacky story."

Also this sounds trivial but it's really not, the constant SUPERHOT chanting and the SUPERHOT words completely covering the level review at the end is so extremely annoying, it greatly affected the amount of time I chose to play this game. One of the coolest parts of this game should be finishing the level and then watching the replay at the end in real-time without any slowmo, and they manage to utterly destroy this experience by making the replay a background behind huge, useless words and drowning the audio in obnoxious, loud, irritating chants that make you just wanna skip the replay and move on to the next level, even though if the chanting wasn't there, the replay would easily have been the coolest part.

This game is still fun but it's just frustrating because it would have been so easy to just omit the parts that bring it down. Why were the devs scared of just giving us a pure gameplay-oriented game? They should have learned from Portal 2 about how to integrate story, good writing and witty comedy seamlessly with gameplay for a well-rounded experience.

Innovative, but way too short (one hour of gameplay) for it's prize, and kinda easy and boring. You know, thinking of something innovative is not enough for making a good game, this seems like an unfinished product and an inability to make something decent out of a great idea. Not worth the prize, not by a long shot.

You'll have fun for a bit after that with the challenge modes and so on, but you'll get around two hours out of this game before you're totally done with it.

It's a great proof of concept, but that really is all. Portal 2 understood that a concept is one thing but fleshing it out into a masterful experience is quite another; SUPERHOT definitely does not understand that. If this was expanded on with an exceptional narrative experience and a few more variations on the mechanics (perhaps boss fights and so on?), then you'd be looking at a game of the year candidate. As it is, it's a demo of the year candidate.

I love how there are a lot of extras and easter eggs. I wanted to love this game, but unfortunately, once you go past the initial presentation, the rest of the package is lacking. There is just one simple game mechanic that you will master in a few minutes, you'll finish the single player campaign in an hour or two, and the narrative doesn't add much to it other than interrupt the gameplay here and there with the usual postmodernist drivel you've come to expect from pretentious indie game designers. I hope at some point indies start caring about gameplay mechanics and content, and stop giving me unskippable high-school level dissertations about the meaning of life, complete with spelling and gramatical mistakes. But I digress.

All there is here is a dozen or two of very small maps (often just a single room) where enemies respawn, often just in your face. Since both you and them die in a single hit, there is nothing else to the game. There are a set of challenges after the single player narrative where you revisit the same levels with some additional limitations that don't really change the experience by much.

Although the mechanic itself is 'innovative', at the end it is just an extremely small bite-sized snack that doesn't last for more than two hours, yet it manages to be repetitive even in that little time. Given what little there is here, I find the price of admission way out of touch. This is really a $5 game at most, not much longer than a tech demo or a vertical slide.

In addition, the Mac port is terrible: poor performance, a broken v-sync implementation, and not even an option to play fullscreen (Command+F works, but that is just a hidden shortcut and is not present in the game menus).

This review would be 10/10 if not for the price. $23 is a bit too much for a game that does not have a lot of gameplay. $10-$15 would be a great spot for the price of the game. The story is extremely meta, and sometimes perhaps a bit over-indulgent. Its clever, but maybe a bit too clever for its own good. I prefer that to being not clever enough, but if your eyes roll into the back of your head when you think a game is trying to be, "Artsy", your going to have to lean pretty hard on the game play for your enjoyment. Luckily, see the first paragraph.

Although I rarely put stock into the cost/length analysis that seems so common (given a choice between 40 good hours and 2 great ones, Ill pick great every time), Superhot's story mode does push it. Over $20 for a 2 hour campaign makes even me a bit annoyed. There's extras and challenges, but YMMV with that sort of things, and for me, the campaign is the meat and potatoes of a game.

Overall, if you like the idea of doing amazing things in a shooter that you normally can't manage because human reflexes are only so fast, like experimental narrative and can deal with a little self indulgence, and are very understanding about game length or love having challenges and extras, definitely get this game. And if its half of on a sale, buying it is a total no brainer

In all a great game that deserves to be played, but perhaps not quite worth the $25 entry fee. Expand

It's possibly one of the most innovative first person shooters ever created. If you've never played it, or even heard of it, Superhot is a game where time moves only when you move. That means if you stop and stand still in the middle of a gun fight, so will everything else. People, bullets, even things you throw or shoot. Many people have said that the story is really cheesy, but personally I think it's really interesting, and kind of reminds me of WarGames, if anyone else has seen that movie. It's really well told in the short hour and a half that it lasts. It may seem short, but for the style this game was designed in, I would say it's a good length. It also has a lot of replay value with the endless mode being introduced after the story ends, and you'll want to play the story again to go back and get achievements you may have missed. In total, Superhot is not only one of the most innovative FPS games ever, it's also, so far, the best game I've played in 2016, one of the best KickStarter games ever, and maybe even one of my favorite FPS games ever. 9/10. I don't like most modern shooters, but this is not the way to go. Way too short, so pretentious that your eyes will do a full 360. The easter eggs don't make it any better. I'm sure some of you will enjoy this, and you have every right to. But me personally found this to be a step back, it's simply an awful game. It should have been sold at a much cheaper price, this is just ridiculous.

Waste of money... Donate your money to Sudanese orphans instead, I'm sure there's more potential among them than in the devs of this game.

Go Google this game and check out the completely free 3DFPS build of it. It's so neat! You get to manipulate time in order to beat what would be a completely unwinnable FPS on its own, and the minimal black-white-red art style makes everything very clear. Also, compared to most time-manipulation games out there, this game is TOUGH.

The gameplay is really original and interesting, and succesful runs will make you feel like a total badass. It's really amazing how intricate the gameplay can be while consisting of a very, very limited pool of actions (Maybe too limited, in fact - At times I was really annoyed Superhot doesn't allow you to crouch). Great level design (both gameplay and narration-wise) elevates the game's quality, as it keeps on throwing you into interesting set-pieces that menage to feel fresh all the way through. However, the trial and error nature of the game can become slightly irritating. Sometimes playing it felt more like solving a half-random puzzle rather than making quick decisions in a reactive environment. Fortunetly, Superhot perfectly understands its own gimmicky nature and never outstays its welcome.

While a lot of people critized the brief story mode, I enjoyed it for what it was and found the shorter, but more intense experience to be a better option than a slower paced one - Simply because the game would become tiresome and boring before the story, no matter how good it was, would reach any sort of conclusion.

The storyline, in fact, is one of the most interesting things about the game - It is surprisingly good... Or, err, decent, because of how obnoxiously it treats itself. As far as (micro spoiler!) transhuman-themed games go, Superhot reminded me of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 a lot. However, if BO3 was the shy kid who was afraid to admit how witty he can really be (therefore facading a surprisingly deep storyline as a generic sci-fi tale to the point in which most players didn't even realise what was really going on), then Superhot is the annoying little brat who keeps on jumping around and screaming "LOOK AT ME I AM CLEVER I AM META!!!" and you want to just smack the little sh*t. However, you can't really do that, because the story really *is* quite clever. I loved how simple it starts and how big it ends, plus the DOS menu stuff is top-notch. Still, the way the game treats itself is literaly worse than Bioshock. Jeez.

A lot of praise needs to be given to the audiovisual layer - While minimalistic, the graphics are surprisingly moody and detailed, with a lot of the narrative told through visual storytelling. They are also beautifuly functional. The soundtrack is very atmospheric and fits the game perfectly.

In total, despite some issues, Superhot is a must-play. While not everything works as it should have, and the gameplay is nothing more than a one-off gimmick, it's damn good to see that you can make an FPS that's totaly different to what has come before.

There's nothing wrong with sacrificing graphics for gameplay, but all the shiny, white lighting effects, white pillars and white walls get grating after a while. I'm no graphics whore, but I'd love to have something to cut the repetitive gameplay.

There really is not much else to say about SUPERHOT. Despite how unique it is, it still comes across as bland and brief. I reckon you should wait for a sale, rather than buying this straight up. It's quite short (took me a bit over an hour and a half) and is not very replayable, at least at the present time.

    The good:
    - time moves only when you move (but bullets still fly, although slowly, even when time is stopped), an innovative idea!
    - an interesting system of menus, resembling that of Norton Commander and DOS. It was fun to just explore every "file" there and see the game of life simulation and other useless stuff

    The so-so:
    - laconic, minimalistic graphical design. I didn't like it much but didn't hate it either
    - actions like punching an enemy, taking a gun, firing a gun all take some real time which isn't obvious at first and caused me some frustration in the early levels.

    The bad:
    - the levels are just scripted sequences. You mostly stay at the same place, and enemies run from all directions, from behind doors and start shooting at you. This means that you will restart and restart the same level until you know where everyone will appear until you can beat it. Or you can rotate the camera after every step so as to see if anyone new has appeared behind you. Not a very pleasant experience.

Ultimately, this game is very shallow. As soon as the novelty wears off and you "get it", there isn't much left. But it's still worth a look.

Whereas many strategy or puzzle games last much longer than they should or wrap up much sooner than anticipated, I think Superhot nails just about the right amount of time to place an emphasis on standard gameplay. Before things can get too overused or stale the main content is over and it's onto the seemingly neverending variations of levels available to test yourself with. To add to replay value there are also differing "modes" that prevent the use of certain items or make the main objective be that you complete the level in a specific fashion, furthering adding elements of strategy and puzzle to the gameplay. Simple in concept and only relatively more complicated in execution, Superhot is super and it is hot.

Concept: Take the core of gameplay from any shooter and that gameplay will revolve around shooting, plain and simple. It's in the title just like it's in gaming DNA. Now add a twist where the entire thing moves in slow motion and you're prone to insta-kill enemies just as they can do so to you. Messes with your mind a little bit at first doesn't it?

Graphics: I personally loved the art style that permeates this world. Your enemies are brightly colored but not so detailed as to be fleshed out beyond mere polygonal shapes. The same can be said for the surrounding world, which lacks color but remains sharp and clear in its definite shapes and settings.

Sound: The sound work is nothing special or remotely spectacular but what it does is excellent pace the game along so that you never feel like you're chugging along slowly, rather playing through in a blur of speed alongside the constantly crescendoing and galloping soundtrack.

Playability: There should be no confusion here once the controls have been established, as your one and only goal is to move forward at all costs, eliminating those who dare to stand in your way and doing your best to survive their counterattacks.

Entertainment: For a title that revolves around slowing combat down, I never once felt bored or tired of the matters at hand and instead felt that much more tense and anxious as I made my way slowly but surely through the levels and the world.

    Replay Value: Moderately High.

    Overall Score: 8.0

The story is often called "pretentious" by some reviewers. I don't get that at all - it seems to be pretty obvious deadpan humour to me, and very light-hearted. I played this along with a friend when it first came out, and we laughed a lot. I feel a bit sorry for anyone that missed the dry jokes and thought it was a serious attempt to be deep.

The game is split up into small level and takes around 2 hours to complete though there are stipulation challenges and an endless mode where you start in a random are and try to rack up as many kills as possible, unlocked once you beat the story…
you can pick up items in the environment to throw at enemies to knock weapons out of their hands, grab their weapons, shoot and dodge bullets like the matrix master that you are…
towards the end of the game youre even able to switch bodies…
this seemingly over powered ability is balanced by the fact that it forces your targets weapon to break
and once you’ve killed every enemies in a level the game shows a rundown of everything you just did with no pauses showing you just how cool what you just pulled off really was..
The game sounds pretty easy but its not..
Theres a great challenge in targeting the right enemies at the right time making sure youre not going to get shot from behind…
and once you feel like you’ve got it all figured out the game switched it up on you adding harder weapons varieties to deal with
And youre going to die a lot trying to figure out the puzzle that is superhot…
Im not the biggest fan of this level feeling though..
the world doesn’t feel connected and I feel the experience would’ve been way cooler if this were one continuous world with checkpoints instead…
but that’s really my only issue with this game..
the delivery of this game makes it feel pretty cheap and throwaway, when there some addictive frustrating and satisfying moments to be had here

The concept is new and congratulations for comping up with it. However, the execution is kind of meh as the stages are short and too much time is dedicate to "chat" and "story". It will be fun once it gets implemented properly.

Every once in a while you see a game that had a GREAT Idea. The idea shows players that new concepts in gaming still exist. An experience that brings you back to some of the best games you have ever played. Seldom if ever does the Creative Direction and follow-through push that great idea even higher. The Creative direction was a throwback to the 90s, executed flawlessly. Great job.

Very good and innovative gameplay, but it is not only SUPERHOT, but also SUPERSHORT. You can beat this game in 1.5-2.0 hours, although it is a new and very nice experience. It still feels not like the actual game, but a very good tech demo, because of lack of content.

The storyline took a backseat to the underutilized slow motion bullet time effect found in the Max Payne series. The graphics are as expected with an indie game budget (wireframe-esque with cell shading and shadows) and it compliments the game. The replay value is quite high and it's not a stretch to assume others will find the time trial and challenge modes a treat.

I really do recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of the Matrix shootout scene or Max Paynes bullet time feature!

When I initially booted up SUPERHOT I was not at all certain what to expect. Minus a few screenshots I went into the game blind. I did not really know exactly what sort of game it was, but I walked away wanting much, much more.

The unique MS-DOS menu system sets the tone for the game, and how the story begins via a cryptic chat message from another coworker in the network that you, the player, must check out this new program. It “downloads” into your machine and you play your first round of SUPERHOT.

Everything but the gun, which is black, and the enemies, which are red is white. White cars, white corridors, white walls, white stairs...yet the game isn’t boring or bland. There is beauty in the simplicity. Whenever you shoot or smash one of your enemies they fall apart into thousands of polygon and disappear to the ground. The simple art style doesn’t get boring, because without the simple color contrasts you would get lost and never be able to complete the game’s unique take on missions.

Here’s the situation… whenever you move an enemy moves or raises their gun or shoots at you. If you stand still, they’re frozen in time. Every move has to be calculated exactly which makes the firefights more intense than anything a Call of Duty or Battlefield could offer. While not fast-faced, the strategic element of each move you make is critical to your success in wiping out enemies.

It isn’t just strategic ducking and shooting either, as you continue through each level a new layer of difficulty or advantage to you the player gets added being learning how to jump, or punch guns out of the hands of the fierce, red enemies. Either way they build and build on the fun and leave you wanting more.
The replayability of this game is high, especially if you want to go for the fastest time and truly master the best way (and there are many) to complete the puzzle. At many points throughout my experience I found myself completely abandoning my gun and just slowly dodging bullets and punching guys.

This game is proof that some of the most creative experiences are coming from the indie scene and I cannot recommend it enough.

    1 – GENERAL

Superhot it's a FPS with great ingame mechanic. The time almost stops when you stand still, and moves normally when you move, which is very clever, very clever indeed, now that I think about it. The game has a story mode, which is bad, but... who cares? It's just there to try to connect the dots. It took me 3 hours to finish and after that we unlock different challenges

The game has a story mode, which is bad, but... who cares? It's just there to try to connect the dots. It took me 3 hours to finish and after that we unlock different challenges and the endless mode.

    2 – GAMEPLAY

I love the gameplay of the game, the way we have to carefully plan our moves when standing still considering that the enemies can, and will, move also when we start moving again.

So, when I finish any level I was always impressed with my skills and smartness. I have to admit that sometimes I even imagine myself in the Matrix.

The graphics are minimalist, but they do the job so well that you end up thinking that they are one of the world's wonders. It's not normal for this to happen.

    3 – CONCLUSION

This game is a proof that there's always room to make innovative games. There's a huge downside with it, a true elephant in the room... it's price. 23€ is too much. I cannot recommend it for that price, not even for half of it. Buy it in one of many sales under 10€ and, for that price, you will likely have your money's worth.

Fresh, innovative, to the point, it might be short, but it's very replayble and the gameplay is gorgeous and it has nice mechanics. That being said, the story is forgettable and the color palette made the levels look so similar between one and the other that it can get repetitive at times, but the references and the replay feature makes up for them.

I really recommend to try this thing

The core gameplay isn't much new, but the element of stopping time requires thought, trial, error, and planning. Each level is a short burst of scenario gold. One might be an instigated bar fight, another a parking garage shootout, and another a rooftop brawl. The gameplay is a major strength here, the only problems being more of a nuisance than actual problems. The controls, specifically the mouse controls, can feel a little on the undersensitive side, but the other aspects are perfectly easy to learn. The story is, again, not much new, but it's presented in a minimalistic, meta-fictional way that its intriguing throughout the 2-3 hour playthrough. It's the type of element that isn't going to be the first thought on any players' mind, but the developers clearly thought it through and wrote a sizeable chunk of good narrative. Graphically, it doesn't disappoint. It's simple, polygonal, and stark, with white backgrounds and set-pieces, red enemies, and black objects and weapons. It looks great using this style of technologically inspired assets and will surprise many. The game finally recognizes its strength; after beating the story, a few other modes are unlocked, a challenge mode and an endless mode. Both of these require little explanation but know that they will both extend your playtime pretty far ahead. Is it worth $25? I'm not entirely convinced. But if you like the sound of the game, go ahead and make the purchase, and you'll find a great game here. If you skeptical, like I was, wait for a Steam sale or something and buy then. Expand

The Second is that the game is too short, and it gets slowed to a crawl by pseudo cutscenes that bog down the game’s pacing for the sake of sort of story. I really think this game could have been better as a non-stop action thriller instead of a Matrix-themed mess of a story. Every other aspect is great, the controls are tight and responsive, and the game doesn’t back down from putting you in some crazy, albeit fun situations. I haven’t been a fan of PC shooter having grown up on console games like Timesplitters, Halo, and Old School Call of Duty. Everything is so fluid that it feels great to think through your route and attempting to play it out is a fun and exciting experience. It’s a great game, I just wish it was longer.
