Konami, wanting to revive the series, has successfully remastered these underrated legendary games, making them much more enjoyable to play on modern systems. If you haven't played Suikoden 2, this is a must-have collection that represents the peak of classic J-RPGs.

Suikoden I&II HD Remaster is a gift for fans of the franchise or the RPG games that dominated the consoles of the 32-bit era. The package maintains the traditional elements of the games, such as free exploration, turn-based combat and, most importantly, hundreds of characters to add to your group, but now with a modern look that mixes nostalgia with modernity.

Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune & Dunan Unification Wars is an excellent updated port of two great games. Almost all of the changes are for the better, the translation is massively improved, and it still maintains all of the charm and flavor of the original games. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to the franchise, there's genuinely no better place to start than the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster. Even if you're just a fan of RPGs, it's well worth a try, if only to see what all the hype is about.

As a remaster, Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune And Dunan Unification Wars definitely succeeds at updating the two classic JRPGs while staying faithful to the original games' art direction, although a few more options and quality-of-life features wouldn't have hurt. Even if the remaster somehow failed to deliver a quality updgrade, however, Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune And Dunan Unification Wars would have been a worthy purchase for any JRPG. The two classic games have stood the test of time incredibly well and still provide extremely compelling gameplay enriched by charming casts and thought-provoking stories that are still worthy of experiencing in 2025 as they were back in the late 90s.

Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune & Dunan Unification Wars is by no means perfect, as we've already explained throughout this review, however, it is a work that was undoubtedly done with taste and passion, fulfilling the complicated mission of bringing back these two RPGs of yesteryear. Who do we recommend it to? Well, I think that if you are a fan of this series, you will be more than happy with what is presented to us this time. I would also say that if you have never given it a chance, this is a truly unbeatable one, because in addition to the fact that you will be playing two brilliant representatives of this great genre, you will be able to feel again how special it was to enjoy any Konami production when the brand was at its best.

Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is a fantastic opportunity to own two of the best JRPGs in history in one package and with several additions that improve the player's quality of life. Both chapters of this legendary saga are still beautiful to play today, especially if you are willing to turn a blind eye to some of the rough edges typical of video games from thirty years ago. With a little effort you are rewarded with an enviable pace, a wonderful phase of recruitment and management of the castle which is a game within the game and with one of the most beautiful narrative plots ever. The remastering operation is rich and perceptible, even if we didn't find all the features we would have expected, we feel like saying that this is the right opportunity to rediscover (or to discover, lucky you) these two wonderful titles.

It’s impossible not to love the first two chapters of Suikoden, which this HD collection brings back with extreme graphical care and some quality-of-life improvements.

Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars has some downsides, but they pale against the interesting story and unusual gameplay.

Even though the quality of life features could have gone further, Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars brings two classic RPGs in great style. For those who haven't played yet and want to check out the two, it's a great opportunity to dive into the universe conceived by the late Yoshitaka Murayama.

A well-made, if slightly bare bones double feature of two overlooked classics. It's gameplay hasn't aged all that well, but it's easy to look past that for the gripping narrative and host of immensely likeable characters.

Suikoden I&II HD Remaster is a polished window into JRPG history with only a few minor flaws that keep it from feeling absolutely perfect.

HD remakes of two of the best role-playing games of the PlayStation era, created with great care, passion and respect. Clearly the best way to catch up on the memorable originals and get back at Luca Blight. It's just a shame that you have to buy the two games as a package and can't buy them individually digitally.

Fans will find so much to love in Suikoden I & II HD Remaster. They're relics of a simpler time, but it's hard to deny the sheer charm and likeability on offer.

Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is an excellent return to the franchise that upgrades enough for the entire experience to feel fresh while still retaining what made the original versions so memorable. While some gameplay mechanics could have done with a more significant overhaul, and the UI can be a little clumsy, the package is strong enough that fans and newcomers will be pleased. If anything, I'm just glad to see two PlayStation One legends accessible on modern platforms for a new generation.

These are decent enough remasters, but not the outstanding ones these RPGs deserved.

Suikoden I&II HD Remaster, which contains remastered versions of two great games that are hard to find today, is a great packet, but it seems a bit rushed and missed the opportunity to reach more players with a more modern version.

Konami’s Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars revives two beloved JRPG classics, preserving their deep storytelling and strategic gameplay. While the remaster improves visuals and adds quality-of-life updates, presentation leans heavily on HD aesthetics, which may divide longtime fans. The lack of a full retranslation and some dated mechanics hold it back from being a true definitive edition. Still, Suikoden II remains a masterpiece, and this collection is a welcome return for the franchise. Hopefully, Konami’s renewed interest signals future installments or improvements.

Aside from its fresh coat of paint, Suikoden I and II remain largely the same as they first appeared, even in spots where a modern update is sorely needed. The two classics feel stuck in limbo; not quite the games you might remember from childhood, but not transformed into something more befitting the current day, either. I have no doubt that Suikoden I & II HD Remaster will rekindle a love of the series in plenty of players, but it mostly convinces me that remasters are a pale replacement for either remaking games entirely, or preserving and playing games in their original state, where their flaws and outmoded prejudices can at least be written off as the product of another age.

If you love JRPG, you must buy this collection. Two of the best RPGs in history. [Recommended]
  2. I was half expecting Suikoden to feel childish but it doesn't. Instead: a prodigious, precocious sprog. A genre in its infancy and prime at once. Sheer fuckin' magic. Two of the most uplifting, absorbing, tragic and sweet JRPG stories ever penned. This is what the human soul is best at.
