Still Life comes off as an eye spy detective game with several puzzle elements thrown into the mix. The 800x600 maximum resolution is disappointing. The 800x600 maximum resolution is disappointing. A game of this caliber with a 2005 release date on a PC platform deserves higher end graphical support. Character development is genuine providing a sense of realism, but there is a lack of involvement on the players part to really control events--the result is a lot of mindless clicking to advance conversations. You also have to do everything in a predefined order which in many cases seems pointless. For example you can't pick up certain objects until you discover a use for them and you can't leave certain areas without completing necessary tasks. Overall, it was worth the play through, but I became weary near the game's end due to the abrupt turnaround in the main character combined with minor game annoyances. The ending sets up for Still Life 2, but ultimately leaves a feeling of unfulfillment as a stand alone game. Expand

It might work reasonably well as an interactive movie/story (there is no real decision-making or choices in the game), but in that case, the developers should have made the game move along a LOT faster. Such as interruptible cutscenes, faster transitions between locations (extra click to skip transition completely), etc.

Heads up, everybody...this is NOT an RPG; it's a point-and-click adventure game. And it's time to be honest about how little the emperor is wearing at the moment...this game is HORRIBLE. It's completely misrepresented in reviews and on its packaging: this is NOT a detective game. When I bought it, I was imagining something like CSI or the earlier game Missing, where you use Heads up, everybody...this is NOT an RPG; it's a point-and-click adventure game. And it's time to be honest about how little the emperor is wearing at the moment...this game is HORRIBLE. It's completely misrepresented in reviews and on its packaging: this is NOT a detective game. When I bought it, I was imagining something like CSI or the earlier game Missing, where you use crime scene clues to decipher puzzles and advance the storytelling. This game features a bunch of mini-games where you spin, twist, push and pull things tediously, intercut with more tedious periods of walking long distances and speaking to awkwardly rendered characters. You can't choose what to say to them; the game just sort of spills out as you go. And the "evidence" and "clues" that you collect can't be examined in any real depth...they're just "keys" to get you to the next boring scene. This game is almost more Myst-like in terms of the puzzles, though they're not nearly as clever or charming as Myst. Three words: cookie baking puzzle. Sheesh. Didn't the box say something about a serial killer? Maybe they meant *cereal* killer? The visuals are nice if you can get around the terribly awkward and wooden movements of the characters (when your player runs, he/she looks like they have a stick up their rear and two broken ankles). The animations are pain-staking slow, too, and I wanted to murder a few characters myself while waiting for their unskippable animations to complete. But the atmosphere of the visuals is completely destroyed by the inane voice-acting. It isn't completely bad so much as totally out of place; when, in the game, two seasoned female detectives are working on a dank crime scene, they trade lame banter in a way that makes them sound like sorority rejects from Scream 2. The poorly written script, with its hackneyed, stereotyped, and in some cases border-line racist characters doesn't help much, either. So, stay away! If you like puzzles that just require you to push buttons in a certain order until you win, and if you can stomach rejected late-night Cinemax dialogue, this game might be for you. But if you want a game with a creepy element and storyline, with puzzles that require lateral thinking and ingenuity, try something like Missing instead. Expand

Although I think the graphics are nice, and the story is interesting, this game is more like reading a book or watching a film, there is absolutely no choice in anything you do. I like adventure games, and I don't think this game qualifies!

I loved this game. I thought it combined the best of the adventure genre with a stellar plot , the dual story game play amuses me and keeps things from getting boring. i like the graphics and the voice acting puzzles are kooky and fun and the settings and characters make for an interesting game. the only thing that stops me giving it a 10 is the ending , who is the killer. i know because iI loved this game. An amazing adventure game, superb plot great graphics and interesting puzzles, as this was never advertised as an RPG I don't particulary know what some of the other reviews are complaining about, and the bloke who writes reviews for PC Format should be fired posthaste.

Loved the game, extremely dissapointed with the ending. I'm hoping for a sequel that, has better voice acting, more interaction with evidence, and all questions answered by end of the game.

Still Life is what it is, an old style point and click game with some nice pre-rendered visuals. Yes, it is very linear (remember when all games were linear, and that was ok?) and yes there are some animation problems, but its not a bad diversion for the $20 price. There are some annoyances--yes, the cookies--and some illogical moments. For example (spoiler alert), when you need to cut the back of a picture at dad's house, you have to search the house for a tiny little razor that is left on the floor, rather than do what most people would really do--go to the kitchen and get a knife. End Spoiler. Everything, except for the puzzles, is spelled out for you . It always tells you exactly where to go and exactly whom to question. Basically, Still Life is more a slightly interactive movie than a game...but it is a great story. Whether you are a fan of the voice acting or not, the dialogue is well thought out, and the parallel story lines leave little clues for one another and work wonderfully together. Buy Still Life for the story. It's one of the best stories I've seen in a video game. Expand

Still Life is a deep game. It’s a splendid adventure with stylish visuals and a shockingly realistic take on detective thrillers. [May 2005, p.85]
  2. If you can stomach the disturbing images (I did) and like your adventure games on the dark, sinister side, then take this game for a spin, chances are you will enjoy it in spite of the little problems the game has.
  3. Certainly the best Adventure Game of 2005 and possibly destined to be considered one of the most elite point and click adventure games ever released.
