I normally don't like anime style visual novels but the overwhelming positive reviews on steam praising the story made me give this one is try. Put a dozen hours in and still wasn't going anywhere...

Steins;Gate is a fun, but flawed tale of friendship and science.Japanese audio only. A bit too dense in parts Intrusive dating elements .

Ok, I heard that it sucks at first but that you have to play a while before it starts to get better. Well, I played for 3 hours and it still sucks and I can't imagine it getting any better. I read that the main character can be annoying at first because he has "8th grader syndrome". Yeah, try more like 8 year old. Well, I played for 3 hours and it still sucks and I can't imagine it getting any better. I read that the main character can be annoying at first because he has "8th grader syndrome". Yeah, try more like 8 year old. Without any explanation, he pretends that a secret organization is after him and it has seemingly nothing to do with the plot except to make him /constantly/ question if someone is with "the organization" and make accusations to every single person he meets, much to their bewilderment. This compounds the issue that the dialogue and writing is incredibly slow and almost the entire of the 3 hours I spent playing was just clicking or pressing enter to get the lines of writing to finish showing up (each line slowly appears unless you click/hit enter) and then click/enter another time to make it disappear and the next line show up, which is very often "..." or "huh?". Great, I really want to click 2 times to read "..." over and over, let alone all of the other unnecessary lines of writing, causing my 3 hours to have accumulated a very small amount of plot. I was just so **** bored. There's also been almost no interaction at this point. The only thing I've done in 3 hours other than click to read more **** dialogue was to open his phone and reply to emails with my choice of 1 of a set of inane responses to inane emails that seemingly have nothing to do with the plot. Seriously, the achievement list on Steam is made up of just achievements that 1. indicate that you finished a chapter and 2. did one of the very few interactions with the phone that you are allowed to do (i.e reply to email, change wallpaper, change ringtone, ignore call, etc.) With almost no interaction allowed, no visual element other than pictures, I'd rather read a book, a much better book than this. I did notice that although this game has high ratings, it doesn't have an overwhelming number of them. This must just really appeal to a specific group of people who are enamored with Japanese culture enough to ignore what is otherwise a horrible game. Maybe it gets better, but I don't think it's going to get better enough to make up for the carpal tunnel I'm developing from all of the clicking. Expand

Whilst not all characters were incredibly likable with some characters being very cookie cutter archetypes, it’s well written and translated content makes it one of the most recommendable visual novels to play!

Steins;Gate features heavy scientific themes combined with a confusing choice system in a slow-paced story. Any problems are easily ignored when you really get into it though, with the relatable characters, voice acting and storytelling promising an unforgettable, emotional experience.

Overall, Steins; Gate could be considered the pinnacle of visual novels with its brilliant storytelling combined with beautiful visuals.
