    Steel Vampire’s concept of on-the-fly difficulty settings has merit, but it proves to be far too challenging from the get-go. Its focus on offensive play ultimately puts players at a disadvantage, making it only worthwhile for the most hardened of shmup fans.

    This game is fantastic. It's a departure from the typical vertical shmup in many ways but is thoroughly enjoyable, with none of itsThis game is fantastic. It's a departure from the typical vertical shmup in many ways but is thoroughly enjoyable, with none of its innovations getting in the way of tight, addictive, skill based gameplay that is exciting throughout. The ship in the game is much larger than normal for a game of this sort, but this is balanced perfectly with the other mechanics, especially the ability to bump into walls and other ships without taking damage.

    The visual style of the game is fantastic, from the ship designs to the color choices, as well as the size of the levels (usually much wider than what's on screen. The rank system in game is based on collecting green or red powerups which allows the player to set their own difficulty as they play, while getting corresponding scoring. The rank also raises over time, faster toward the end of the game.

    There is a bare bones story, but I found it a nice touch. Completing the game's easiest setting, called "very hard" without using a continue will allow you to progress past level 6-3 to fight the final boss, and the moment that happens at that point I found to be surprisingly nice, despite a lack of much story background. This should be achievable by pretty much anyone after enough play as there is a side system of upgrades to make the game easier/your ship more powerful. This puts a reduction multiplier on your score, so you won't be able to just grind your way to the top of the leaderboards, but you can make a 1cc of the base mode more attainable to see the true ending and unlock some additional modes.

    To top it off the game's soundtrack is top notch, and cements the overall feel of the game as something very memorable in my collection. I am sure I will be playing it for a while, it is refreshingly different than other games in the genre but its innovations don't come at the expense of fun and addictive gameplay as is so often the case. Akiragoya, the makers (which I think is a company but may be a person) should be supported if you are a fan of the genre, buy this without hesitating if you like shmups! I hope they will release more games on Steam/Make more quality games like this in the future.    … Full Review »
