The main story arc for each class is very enjoyable and even the side quest stories can be interesting. I cannot understand the hate. Expand

Dont be discouraged by some of the reviews here, giving it less than 6 is just pure stupidity because the game offers a lot even though it might look similar to some mmos out there and even wow but that doesn't make it a bad game! Yes, it has few weaknesses but i'd rather mention couple of bugs, texture popping or full servers (even website), than bashing it for not being the 100% original game. If you are a star wars fan, don't hesitate and go for it! If you are not, you will still have a lot of fun with this game.

Well worth the 5+ years I waited for this game. The questing in this game is heads and shoulders above any other game out there. Leveling does not feel like a grind. Not to mention once you get off your second world when leveling (about level 15-18) and you get into the 3rd and 4th world the space really opens up and you feel like you are in the star wars world. Personally, I will be playing this game for years, and judging by how many people bought this game and pre-ordered it will be very successful. It broke all of WoWs records. Now all we need is to keep all those 10 year old fanboys out of this game and it would be perfect! Expand

Really the best mmo I've played in a long time! Its the only mmo to date that is able to give me the fun i had when i was playing Starwars Galaxies before the famous "NGE" downgrade. Even if it don't have the same gameplay depth (i don't think i will ever see that again before a long time in a mmo, sadly...), the depth of the story really compensate that (at least while I'm doing it...)!

Been playing the game since the first day of early access and it's my favorite games of 2011 now. It really brings a whole new immersion level to MMO's I haven't seen before. I actually feel attached to my character now as if she is really their inside the world. If you are a Star Wars fan and have been dissapointed where the franchise has been going you will be happy to know that this is the Star Wars you know and love. In fact, my Imperial Agent story has been the most interesting Star Wars tale I've seen. The visuals are really nice to look at and have a very unique style, however, there is a nasty bug where the high settings for the textures doesn't do anything and all you see is medium. While in conversation the high textures work but once out of it no go. So I am hoping they fix this soon.

The combat to me is very smooth and rewarding, I personally love the cover system for the Imperial Agent and makes the game much more interesting. I always thought WoW had the best traditional MMO combat but ToR is up in that category I think.

The sound and music is what you would expect from a Star Wars game. The lightsabers sound great, the pew pew from the lasers is just as iconic as in the movies, and the music is one of the highlights in the audio/visual department. The voice acting is suberbly done as well with some incredible talent like Jennifer Hale voicing the game. The worlds themselves are HUGE. So much to explore and see it gets overwhelming the further you progress. At the moment to control population the game uses instancing but that is only a temporary measure that should be removed shortly according to Bioware.

I was thinking between giving the game a 9 or a 10. 9 because of some of the bugs and issues the game has but then again this is an MMO and a very large/ambitious game so I think personally I justify it as a 10. I really love the game and will play it for a long while to come.

Reactions to this game seem to vary wildly, but BioWare has crafted a very enjoyable game. The storylines are engaging, space battles are fun (despite the complaints about being on rails), and the flashpoints are more engaging than nearly any other game with group instances I have played.
As a single-player rpg, this game is very reminescent of Knights of the Old Republic I and II. It is easy to play this game solo from 1-50. However, if you enjoy grouping up, there are plenty of opportunities to do so; aside from flashpoints and operations (Raids), many planets have daily, repeatable heroics for groups of 2-4, providing upgraded item rewards and harder groups of enemies.
Crafting is the most enjoyable of any mmo I have played. Rather than make you spend hours and hours in a capital city, dragging out mats and crafting items one by one, you are able to send companions (as you level, the number you can send off to craft grows) on various missions which provide crafting rewards as well as have a companion craft the actual tradeskill items for use.
People decrying the heavy instancing of this game must be forgetting a very common complaint among mmos: camping specialty mobs. In this game, the instancing (planets are instanced to thin out the number of people with whom you compete for quest objectives) is heavy, but the only negative that results here is that you see far fewer people as you are out in the world than you might in another MMO. However, it's easy to review how many people are on your planet and find players with whom to cooperate if you need (and switching planet instances is as easy as two clicks). Instancing many of the quest objective areas also has the added effect of making YOU the hero of your story. If you're going after the Imperial General, whose defeat will ensure the Republic's victory on a planet, it makes you feel like the actual champion if you don't have to wait in line for 6 others to kill him first.

This game is definitely not for everyone. Many people enjoy an open world, with a rather unrestricted ability to do what you want. Other people might enjoy a game that guides you a bit, provides some intriguing storylines (indeed, I've played many an MMO I eventually dropped because, aside from trying to roleplay my own story, there was nothing inherent in the game to grab on), and definitely makes that "kill 10 womp rats" questline more enjoyable than your run-of-the-mill MMO.

I was hesitant at first, but as soon as the majority of my friends bought it I knew I had to as well. What a mistake. Boring, repetitive, empty, sluggish and buggy. Not a BAD game, but not worthy of being called anything beyond mediocre, if only because of it's good - not great - graphics (though by today's standards isn't saying much) and I must admit great voice acting. I tried REALLY hard to like this game, but to no avail. PvP is lackluster, with no skill involved, and instances are so simple it's pathetic. I have also heard from end game players that there is only ONE RAID, which is bugged to the max. I canceled my subscription already, and have a another week or so for the 30 free days but I won't be playing it again. If you like WoW like I do for it's polished, accessible, vast world and lore, I would suggest you avoid this bland in comparison copy with a StarWars skin. There's bugs, balance issues and some features that are missing that people want. The one great thing about MMO's are that the game grows and matures and hopefully turns into something better then when it's first released. Unfortunately in this day and age people want instant gratification and don't have the patience to allow a developer to make a game better. They expect everything to be the way they want it right this second.

    1. The voice over work is as awesome as any Bioware product. 2. The class story lines are amazing (granted I've only seen half of the class story lines but the 4/8 have been great).
    3. I find the combat to be done well. I like it better than WoW.
    4. I love having my personal spaceship as a base of operations.
    5. I like the crafting system quite a bit to include the reverse engineering portion (eventhough that can be very frustrating at times).
    6. I think the appearance of the locations are great. Often I find myself stopping to look at the area and I'm quite taken aback.
    7. I think the companion system adds another layer to game because I find myself getting invested with my companions.

Some bad points are as follows:
    1. The customer service at launch was atrocious. I don't know how it is right now but I hear it's not much better.
    2. Reverse engineering being tied to the RNG can be extremely frustrating. They need to implement some kind of guaranteed % in the background. Currently it's possible to never learn a new recipe because of the RE process being random.
    3. The UI is crapola. You can't move anything around or change the scale. (Supposedly this is changing in the big content update in March)
    4. There's still quite a few skills that are broken within various AC's that have been broken since beta which make certain trees of AC's useless to play.
    5. The pvp on Ilum is still crappy. They have this massive open world for pvp and they shard the zone because of performance issues. There's really no point in going there to be honest. When you get there you get the sense that there should be a massive battle going on of 100+ vs. 100+ but you'll be lucky to find 8 people from the opposite faction.
    6. Faction imbalance is pretty bad as well which makes it another reason no one wants to open world pvp. The Empire outnumbers the Republic on most servers so the Repubs hardly come out to play in open world pvp because they will get steamrolled.

Those are the things that I think are hurting the game the most right now.

The reason I gave the game a 9 was because the game as it stands right now is an awesome game. If Bioware is diligent in addressing the communities concern then this game is going to be a big deal. Most people forget what WoW started out with when it launched. It might have had 25% of what it currently has. It just takes time for MMO's to come into their own.

To everybody else, the first thing you need to understand about the negative user reviews is that they are either from those who were in the beta, or those who are fanboys of other MMO's. The complaints about lag, glitches, ugly graphics, crappy textures and a bad UI are from idiots with terrible computers, and while they probably claim otherwise it simply cannot be true because SWTOR meets none of those complaints. This game is one of the best looking MMO's on the market, along with one of the smoothest and has had very little glitches compared to other MMO launches. The optimization could be better, however if you're going to play this game on low settings then don't bother with it as you'll probably end up bashing the visuals like every other retard. When maxed this game is one of the better looking MMO's, it feels high quality from the moment you create your character. There are 8 different classes, 16 in total if you count the specializations and 32 if you count the talent tree's, in other words this game has a lot of character customization options. Throw in a bunch of races and character creation options and you have yourself a very good amount of options to roll with. Whether you like charging into battle head first, or sitting in the back healing, or even using stealth to pick and choose your enemies, this game has something for everybody's play style. In other reviews you've probably heard about the story, and while I personally find it to be very good, I haven't experienced all the story options to really judge the game on that one element, however what I can tell you is that the combat is very fluid, the game has, for the most part great voice acting and there is literally 200+ hours of content per character play-through, this is an MMO though so there's always going to be something for you to do upon reaching level cap. Overall SWTOR is a very good game, and to the people saying "zones are instanced, each server is not one world" and all that BS, why don't you guys actually play the game first before spewing BS? Zones are packed, large with tons of players, the game feels far from dead. In short to the skeptics, don't let the negative user reviews throw you off, actually go buy this game because even if you dislike the monthly fee, in one month you'll spend more time playing this game than any other game outside of maybe Skyrim. Star Wars: The Old Republic is the final evolution of the "traditional" MMO, taking a tried and true system and adding Star Wars lore and BioWare's legendary storytelling. All the usual MMORPG amenities are there, from Auction Houses, to Open World PvP, to dungeons and questing. No MMORPG can even touch SWTOR in story, it's not even close. Each class has its own unique storyline, fully voice acted and full of decisions. Every quest has decisions to be made. Even the minor "kill 10 X" quests have amazing voice acting and decisions to be made, and unlike Skyrim, every character sounds unique and has his or her own script. This is a bigger upside than it even sounds like; when the quests give you context and make you feel like you're a part of the world, it makes those quests feel like they're worth doing. Quest givers will react to you differently based on your race, class, and what decisions you make. It makes the NPCs feel alive, which in turn makes YOU feel alive. Even dungeons have storylines that your whole party can participate in, which is an incredible feature that solidifies the team, and even changes how the dungeon will play out in some cases. You can even flirt with NPCs, and this CAN turn into something small, even if they're not your companions.

Speaking of which, you get KOTOR-style companions. You can only have one out at a time, but they are a HUGE help and are the equivalent of an extra player, having the same stats and wearing the same gear. Decisions you make will change their disposition towards you, and can lead to some funny comments. Starting companions each fill roles that your class lacks - Tank classes will get DPS and Healing companions, "caster" classes get Tank companions, and so on. Each class has its own unique companions, and they in turn have their own storylines. They can be romanced if you are opposite sex and make the right choices with them, but same-sex romancing, by popular demand, is in the works.

I'm not going to lie, it is VERY similar to World of Warcraft. So similar that, at first glance, it will appear to be a copy, and many classes will feel familiar. On closer inspection, though, it's not the similarities that stand out, but the differences, because many of the features it copies from WoW are refined. Your "hearthstone" can be used to transport you to any bind point you've discovered, making it a good way to get back to town if you're out in the wilderness, or get back to the action if you're in town. You have the option to auto-loot the entire immediate area, hide your helmet if you think it looks ugly and makes your voice sound weird (helmets change your voice sometimes). Anything that needs to be looted will shoot a beam of colored light into the sky that corresponds to the type of loot that the enemy dropped - if you get a purple drop, the beam of light will be purple, if a quest item drops, it will be gold, and so on. Crafting no longer requires you to go out mining for mats or going back to town because you can send your companions off to automatically do it for you, and each companion gets bonuses to certain skills. You can even send them off to automatically sell all your vendor trash. Crafting skills can even affect the outcomes of dungeons, as a person skilled in a certain trade can open shortcuts or paths to secret bosses.

Even if you hate WoW, I would give SWTOR a chance--I hate WoW and I love SWTOR. However, if you're looking for something completely new, and the story elements aren't enough of a draw, this is probably the wrong game for you. It doesn't do a lot that hasn't been done before except for make your character feel alive, so if you couldn't care less about story, it's going to feel like WoW lite in space. It doesn't have free space combat (...yet), so the Space Combat missions are basically Star Fox missions. There isn't much endgame content yet, but you'll only be halfway through your own story when you reach 50, and endgame content is on the way. This may only be 1.0.0, but this is a great showing and a polished game. It earns my 10.

In the tough market of MMO games, this game actually shines. Also, in the beginning, BW announced that this game was going to be more of a theme park than a sandbox type. The worlds are as lively as an MMO can get without adding to the lag factor. The social aspect is basic like how it was back in the days without all the automated stuff. The story line is awesome in respects to your typical MMO storytelling. And best of all its Star Wars. At the end you either hate it or like it. I love it and I'm glad this game came out. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Responding to common slams on SW:TOR.

"It's a lobby game/too heavily instanced": The planets go in by every 4-6 level hops. That is also the comfortable spread for grouping. Only seeing 20-150 people per world, depending on time of day, is by design. Those the ones you can group with immediately with no fuss, no worrying about people being too high or too low for anyone.

"Everyone looks the same/I see clones everywhere(right)/everyone wears the same gear in the end": The character customization options are quite robust, many options for skin tone, cybernetics (depending on race) hair, beards, scars, eye color, facial features, complexion, and tattoo's. There is more diversity than in WoW, but there are some (City of Heroes) with more. That said, this ignores the equipment system. Higher tier gear of any level can be given modifications, enhancements, and (for armor types) armoring to turn it into higher level items, all the way to 50. If you like your level 10 recruit gear and want it to be level 50, add new innards (even the rarest kinds) and you can look the way you want to, and still have all the viability you'd like. Add this to the fact that glasses, goggles, etc. are options to compliment facial features, the lack of sliders is not something I miss. And to those who insist they've seen clones of themselves everywhere, I've never seen a clone of my character on the fleet. The fleet is the main stop-off area where there are many people together, well over 100 consistently on my and most servers)

"The graphics are bad", the world design and diversity in artistic direction from world to world is amazing, for image detail there's videos of gameplay so I won't go there. But there are many moments throughout gameplay where simply looking up is enough to make you go wide eyed. "Hey, look up." was something you'd hear among my friends, and "that is so amazing." or something like it was very often the response. Because of the detail in the textures though, you will get 'texture pop' if you have less than 2 gigabytes on your card or 4 gigabytes or less in your ram, because the textures do take spac. When you're moving quickly, you will see textures spring from low res to high as you move, that is true. However, A> 8 gigs of ram also fixes that and B> That problem is very specific, and not common to standard play when you're out fighting for your cause.

"No Endgame/Poor PVP/No Replay Value": I think this is less of a sucker punch, because mileage does vary. First of all, I've seen often is that there's almost nothing. Many (10) of the previous 'flashpoints' (dungeons) have a hard mode, which is a level 50, high challenge version of the previous experience with enhanced challenges and level 50 rewards. Secondly, there are two operations (raids) available now in normal and hard mode if you want a larger scale challenge involving 8-16 people. There are 4 pvp modes including ilum overworld pvp. Each have different goals and methods for winning, and I find them each quite fun.

"Your choices don't matter": I can't actually choose to kill a quest giver because he needs to give other people quests, therefore they don't give you that choice. However, in a flashpoint called "Black Talon" I can choose whether to spare a captain that disobeyed an order to charge a battle cruiser with a small transport, or to let him live. If I kill or imprison him, his first officer takes command and, due to inexperience, she lets a boarding party slip into our engine room and we have scramble to keep them from shutting our engines down. If he stays in command, our engine room remains safe. If we kill him and then terrorize his crew, when we return they will have mutinied, afraid we would kill them all regardless, and we return to a bridge full of corpses. If we inspired more than terrified, we return to a bridge crew congratulating our success. "That doesn't matter" seems a bit selective, because the plot plays out very differently. No, you may not be able to destroy planets other players could use, but the choices you make can, and do, affect what happens.

"Combat is mashing hotkeys/boring": Beyond 'force' (a resource like mana) there is 'heat' (Stronger attacks generate more, you must keep it down, which is harder when you've got more heat) and rage/focus (you must build them to use more powerful attacks), as well as a charge attack/interrupt feature and more. Add to that companion system to add strategy to your encounters, and very compelling combat animations, you have a truly engaging system.

There are other points, but I just wanted to set the record on a few major ones. I strongly recommend you take feedback that breathlessly repeats 'don't leave WoW, it's not a WoW killer!' much like you would take someone screaming 'Simpsons movie sucks!'. Some people legitimately don't like it, but the wave of vitriol? That's unwarranted.

However, as it's pretty new there are still a few things that have not been implanted yet such as Macros and Chat Bubbles, but I believe they will be diving into the SWTOR universe pretty soon. I've read other reviews on this, and anyone who is giving below a 7 is just a troll and a WoW Fanboy. Many having been saying this is a WoW clone, but no, this game is completely unique to all MMOs. The PvP requires a lot more skill than many other MMOs and in situations can really test your abilitys. Also, this MMO is actually a challenge, you must work for your luxury's. Be that gear, mounts, pets, lore or even ship upgrades, you will feel rewarded whatever you earn. But all in all this is new the the MMO family and should be given a chance and I highly recommend that you try it, you won't be disappointed. Expand

Pretty good game overall. You do need to have an active subscription to play, though, so beware. The focus on story would be fine, but I don't think user-made content is even going to be considered in the future. There are a few technical issues, sometimes bordering on game-crushing. THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU BUY.

Some are great, like KOTOR some much less so. While I was worried that this wouldn't work as an MMO, just look what happened to SWG even before they were forced to shut it down (shame really since a lot of people actually loved that game), I was preasently surprised by TOR. Good points:
Story is a major part of this game and it gets hold of you right from the word go, I actually care about my character a lot more than I usually do while playing and mmo. The feeling I get is very similar to the one I get when I play other bioware games. I feel immersed and invested in my character and his/her fate.

Companions in this game go far beyond pets, both in terms of their usefullness and the entertainment they provide. As long as you keep them properly geared they are quite handy in fights and their personalities make me chuckle.

Crafting in this game is more easy going than in some other mmo's I've played. The hunt for resources which with to craft is not as borring and time consuming here and it doesnt' take an insane amount of time to get your crafting up to a level where it surpasses the gear you get from quest rewards. If you have a group of friends with different crafting skills or if you're an alta-holic like me you can easily provide your character(s) with gear that far surpasses the quest reward items.

Graphics: this is a sensetive point for people I've noticed, it's seems you can either love it or hate it. I'm putting this in the good points section since I myself love it but if any of you feel different then that's fine. Again, personally I love the graphics, the style that bioware has chosen to run with. The sceneries on the different planets are great. You have the wide sweeping sand dunes of Tatooine, the overgrown ruins of Taris, the mountain ranges of Alderaan etc etc all are just beautiful.

    Things that are standard:
Combat is pretty standard I think, noting really revolutionsingly new but not bad either. You shot/slash your way trhough mobs, proving once again that they were fools to get in your way. Fun, but nothing really head turning.

Space combat can be entertaining from time to time in a way but it's just a small mini game. The graphics of it are great though, there is a real sense of depth in the star specled blackness of space. bottom line is that it may not be for everyone but I find it fun to do from time to time.

Mounts; well, nothing new here really, sure you ride a speeder instead of a horse or whatever but it's still only a way to get from A to B faster.

    Bad points:
Character appearance customisation (I'm not talking about character creation, even though that could use a little work too but is still far better than some other games) needs work. Right now there isn't all that much you can do to affect the way your character looks ingame. What you wear is what you get rules, something I've never liked since you too often end up looking stupid (although that doesn't happen that much in this game, at no point have I looked at my character in TOR and thought "oh goodie, a rainbow-power ranger-carebear-paladin, just what I always wanted") I know some people hate the word but I want to see an A-tab or the like in this game, the moddable gear system they have right now, while very cool, isn't enough in this respect.

Grouping is a bit of a pain, I've played City of Heroes so I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to this. There you could use the sidekick/exemplar system which enabled you to team with higher/lower leveled players and do their missions near/at their level (sidekick would bring your level up to one below that of your mentor, exemplar would lower your level to that of the player you were bound to) the system worked great and made teaming viable over great level differences. In TOR you can't be that many levels apart before the quests become pointless.

    That's it then

There you have it, my take on this game. All in all I love it, it needs work and it has bugs but show me the mmo that doesn't. Personally I've only experienced a few minor bugs and no one I know, irl or ingame has had any of the major bugs that some people on forums keep claiming make the game unplayable. I'm not calling them liars, I just think its a bit suspect.

After spending 5 days and blowing through about 30% of the Empire worlds I can honestly say this is one of the best games of the year and one of the most polished MMO releases I've ever seen. TOR isn't perfect. It lacks many common social and market features of modern MMOs. Soup to nuts it just doesn't stack up with the breadth of features games like Rift offer. What it does offer, is a highly focused polished experience. The things Bioware set out to make amazing turned out amazing. In the same way, SW:TOR has taken/copied what was good about WoW and improved upon it. People buy and play new games because they are better versions of what came before. Millions of people bought COD:MW3 because it was BETTER than Black Ops and MW2, not because it revolutionized the FPS genre. SW:TOR will not change the basic format of MMOs, but it is simply a better overall experience than what you find in WoW. The number one and most noticeable improvement is the addition of an actual story. You really care about your character in SW:TOR in a way you never do in WoW. Your character feels like an actual person with a real personality, and it makes the entire world that much more engaging. Sure, there are many improvements that they can and will make to polish the game even further, but this must be the most complete experience ever delivered by a brand new MMO. It has absolutely NO similarity to World of Warcraft whatsoever. If anyone is complaining that this game is a disappointment then this game may not be the game for them. For Star Wars fans like myself, I would absolutely recommend this game for you. People are obviously going to troll about a game that is similar in any fashion to another game, that is the way of life. People do not know how to review because they have nothing better to do besides write something completely untrue. This game is definitely new, I'll admit that there are a few flaws at the moment since this is a brand new MMORPG, but I expect these issues to be fixed within a few weeks or a few months. People who are not patient are of course going to troll on this website. To be honest, I think that Metacritic is the only website that there is so many negative reviews of this game. Is there some sort of rebellion towards good video games or something? Because I do not understand why there such a ridiculous number of negative reviews on GOOD GAMES.
Some advice to the trolls that do not agree with this argument that I am trying to write about, GO OUTSIDE. Get a life please because I am sick of hearing these stupid reviews because I know for a fact that half of you guys have never even played the game and are writing from your **** I just made this account today because I had enough with these stupid reviews! I saw one idiot (Thorn14) saying that the PvP warzone huttball should be a blank canvas but isnt due to the air jets in the middle area of the warzone. Hey, buddy, the person can be shot in the totally wrong direction too!! Go figure that....
Bunch of WoW fanboys are also complaining about the graphics of the game (MagusGrandios, especially.) Hey, genius-boys, the dev, BioWare MADE IT THAT WAY FOR A REASON. That was so that it didnt require you going out and spending $$$ on new computers or hardware in general to be able to run it! Fools!
A bunch of WoW fanboys are **** and moaning about this being a 'carbon copy of World of Warcraft' (too many to name) This is a typical fanboy response when their game is threatened by a product heads and tails BETTER than their game. Pay them no heed. this game is virtually NOTHING like WoW, and I know because I've played it, too.

Those are just a few of the trollers. now that some of them are dealt with, Let me tell you from a true perspective (and yes, I have played MMORPG's for years) that the only major issue I have with SW:TOR is the fact that the republic doesnt have more interesting aliens to play. For all the fanboys of WoW again pissing and moaning their collective heads off about the Empire not having multiple races... THEY'RE THE EMPIRE!! THEY'RE A XENOPHOBIC SOCIETY THAT WOULDN'T LET THE ALIENS INTO ANY PART OF SOCIETY THAT MEANT A DAMN! WANNA PLAY A MMORPG WHERE YOU'RE A SLAVE?? DIDNT THINK SO!! Sorry, it just irks the hell outta me when I see obvious trolls trolling something so epic as SW:TOR. And let there be trolls to this post. It just proves my point.

Despite that slight issue, the graphics are workable on almost every system someone could have. (PC system obviously) The worlds are really well worked, with random convo's and people walking around giving it almost a feeling of past, present, and future in and about the main areas. The crafting was another stroke of genius. I played games where crafting was tedious boring work. BW made it so I can go on questing doing whatever I pleased and have my minions do the gathering, and crafting for me. Then when I have the item, I can choose to reverse engineer it to attempt to learn a better way to make the same item. Great work, BW. I am extremely pleased. In closing, BioWare came through strong with SW:TOR. As I said, trolls will try to do their best to troll a game that threatens theirs. But in all honesty, this is a game that you'd be crazy not to check out, especially if you're an MMORPG fan, as I am. Hope this review cleared up some of the trolls idiotic spewing. (now I need to get my brain bleached to try to get some of the retarded bile that they wrote out of my head)

Group content so far is excellent, with a decent mix of objectives and difficulty. Exploring is lots of fun, with strong incentives for players to explore thoroughly. Crafting is fun, without being a monotonous time and resources sink. Early items are actually useful as you level.

Companions are useful, with a nice selection of options and abilities for all the various classes. Each has their own interesting story and mechanics.

Basic combat and skill system very similar to WoW, which isn't a bad thing for the most part. A few small oversights in regards to early gaps in characters skills. IE, a Sith Juggernaut doesn't have a taunt ability early on, but the Inquisitors first companion does. Not a game breaker, just a slight irritation.

Leveling curve is just about right, the story keeps things moving, without excessive downtime between major quest groups. All that without even mentioning the deep lore well they get with Star Wars. Solid 9/10, would go 9.5 if possible. Keep it up BioWare!

You have a huge amount of dialogue, a huge amount of missions to pursue, you have a huge Star Wars universe, companions who interact with you, not simply follow you blindly: you can also have them go off & do their own quests. You also have a very fun PvP element which is pretty mad, nonetheless fun.

This game has easily the best levelling experience in any mmo I've ever played. Maybe, for people with 12 hours a day to play, they'll grow bored once they blast through. Perhaps a bit linear- in fairness most RPGs are linear, and stories tend to be linear.

If you like having a huge world where you can just do anything (like kill 12 boars in a snowy place, or in a forest, or in the sea for some reason) you'll love GW2 instead which is free roaming mediocrity. I expected this game to be a mostly single player story with the option to multi play- and got exactly what I wanted.

Admittedly I was at best sceptical over Bioware's announcement - back in 2008 - that they would henceforth be continuing the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic franchise (which I adore) as an MMO. I don't like MMOs; I find them more often than not to be shallow and the worst representations of video games as a leisure activity. Also, the communities in-game and over the internet attract the worst examples of gamer.

Yet when I entered the world of SW:TOR, many of my reservations were put aside. The game fits right in with the Star Wars RPG standard set by KOTOR, with extraordinary voice acting and an engaging story from the get go. The dialogue mechanics in particular make grouping up a rather fun experience. This was all to be expected from Bioware and the RPG elements are where this game really shines above the competition (MMO or otherwise). The combat is a definite improvement over KOTOR 2, which could be rather sluggishness and frankly quite boring at times. In SWTOR the hotkey-based combat mechanics add more strategy and depth, yet perfectly accessible. It's not innovative in itself but is a great solution for this particular franchise.

Gameplay outside of the story is of the familiar MMO archetype, and is also for the most part optional. If you don't like PvP, grouping, you can easily avoid these elements and still have a huge game to enjoy. But you can't ignore the fact that SW:TOR is an MMO. Server queues, lag, and less than optimal framerate (with respect the the graphical fidelity) make sure of this. Oh, and yeah a monthly fee. Yet it's worth tolerating this to enjoy the larger game that SW:TOR is, larger perhaps because of the fact that it is an MMO...

To say that SWTOR is anything less than 8.5 - 9.0 is an absolute joke! My gaming background is extensive, but primarily console. I bought a gaming rig this year intent to give PC games a fair shake. I've been impressed by some, bored out of my mind by others. Like a pyramid marketing scheme I was roped into playing both WOW and Rift this year. Neither game held my attention for more than a couple of months. SWTOR, on the other hand, is awesome! Not only because it's Star Wars, but also because the game is more engaging than other MMORPG's. Bioware deserves an incredible amount of credit for what they've achieved here. Haters are gonna hate. Don't buy into the WOW fanboy hype machine! 4- great stories: all quests are voice acted. this forces you to slow down and actually participate in the story. while i didn't see the significance of such a decision initially, after a few days of play, i get it. it breaks up the questing so you don't feel like you just running on a tread mill of "go here, do this". and you have options that allow you to customize your interaction in a manner consistent with your character concept. some folks have complained that wanting to get light/dark points forces you to answer a certain way, but they're missing the point. you have ample opportunity for light/dark points. you don't HAVE to respond in a way that will get you min/maxed. so yes, you DO have a choice about your interaction. 5- crafting and missions are pretty cool. you can send your minions off to do things for you and secure resources that way. 6- the minions are great. they make a significant contribution to your efforts, allowing you to do things you could not other do. they also have favor points you can build up to increase their loyalty and effectiveness. there are even romantic options with some of them and, according to bioware, more to come. 7- the light/dark points add an extra layer to an already mult-layered game. there are multiple ways to advance and you can open some pretty interesting dialogue options that have very interesting outcomes. -- thus decreasing the overall "linear" feel of the game.
8- a good main story line that really contributes to a feeling of growth in your character. the story lines are class specific so you get to really fill out a role and philosophy.
9- there's pvp. in areas and servers so you can take your pick.
10- it's a fairly open world with lots of exploration opportunities. all in all, i feel like this is a game that contributes a good bit to the mmo genre and is presents a truly enjoyable experience on the level of wow or coh/v. good job bioware.

It is wrong to compare it to any other game. Swtor is unique in many ways mostly the depth of the story that they made for each class as well as the amazing work that was done on the music that surrounds the game everywhere you go. The game is very stable the population on the servers is exactly what it should be the speed that you get a group for an instance or pvp is really good.
It is a game for almost everyone i could say although i cant talk about the end game as i havent reached that level yet. each class has a very distinctive role in groups in PVE or PVP environment. all in all i highly recommend the game to solo or group players to star wars and non star wars fans. i do not recommend it to people who will want an improved version of wow or EQ or anything in that respect. SWTOR is Unique in many more ways than one its an Epic production from Bioware and Lucas arts, its not here to change the genre its here to make players HAPPY !

PvP is so-so, it has the potential to be really fun but there's some balance issues and queue issues holding it back for me. Hopefully fixed over time.

WONDERFUL visuals and aesthetics again, let me stress that. It's so nice to have detail and cloth physics and elaborate armor in an MMO after so long. Very easy to make attractive characters, for those who only want to make fat people and space boogey men: Oh well, boohoo for you.

In the end, I actually think it's a fairly so-so MMO (but there are aprox ZERO good true MMOs on the market currently), but as a good co-op KOTOR like, it's very engaging, very detailed, very fun.

In WoW simple questing PvE could get tough with many patrolling mobs but in SWTOR it just doesn't feel alive, mobs just stand around and wait for an ambush. The still mobs can get patched though and it's not that big of deal when you experience all the other satisfying aspects. Leveling, gear collecting and the voice-acting are very satisfying. This is the first MMO ive ever played where I paid attention to the plot and understood what was going on, i usually skip all the texts and just rush to max level, but with swtor i find myself taking my time and listening to every word spoken. The games combat system is the standard MMO formula but with Auto-attack removed and smooth animations for all your abilities making fights visually beautiful and very intense. The crafting system is a joy to level up, you dont actually have to do ANY gathering or crafting to max out your crafting profession, that is all handled by your crew of companions, and not only is it mindlessly simple to level up but you get items that are genuinely useful ( you WILL use the items you make, and NOT just max level items like WOW). For example my Synthweaver (Makes Force user armor) has provided about 70% of the armor for myself and a friend i am leveling with, i can honestly say ive never used a single item from crafting in wow other than engineering bombs and trinkets. This game is great to play with friends but its totally playable start to finish solo, the game provides you with several companions throughout the game that range from Tanks to healers and even Ranged or melee dps so even healers can efficiently level up, In fact this is the first games that healers have an upper hand when leveling, With my healer im able to solo around 2 or 3 elites of equal level at a time with my tank companion, while my DPS (/w healer comp) can only take one at a time (two with CC). It should also be noted almost every class has a spec for tanking and/or healing as well as a DPS spec. Bear in mind however, this is an MMO and as such there are concessions made graphically compared to dedicated single player games. There are a good number of planets to visit, some quite large. PVP is fun although limited to 3 scenarios(called warzones, one of which allows for intra-faction combat) and a small amount of world PvP (which always suffers when population distributions are unbalanced) due to the young age of the game.
It also has PvE dungeons and raids (flash points and operations respectively) although again, the number is currently small.

As with most MMO's the amount of endgame content increases with each major patch, however to call it's release sparse is misguided. The amount of endgame content is small compared only to established long term MMO's, specifically World of Warcraft.

The game shines in it's storylines, the voice acting makes questing quite enjoyable and most quests consist of going to places and finding things or people rather than "kill X of Y" which mostly appears in bonus quests, with occasional exceptions. The class storylines are suberb, a real evolution of the genre. As it is possible to level through pvp and a simple, starfox-esque space shooter mini-game there is a great replayability to the game as it is possible skip entire planets non-class quest lines and do them on a seperate alt. Completionists and explorers are also rewarded with datacrons in hard to reach locations providing permanent (small) stat-boosts provided they can be found.

The game is very star wars, players travel between planets interacting with large varieties of characters, they have space ships and build up a crew of loyal 'companions' who can be used to provide combat support in a similar way to the 'pets' of other games, perform crafting activities and even be sent away to sell all your vendor thrash when the inventory is getting full.

There is, of course, room for improvement and ample room for expansion. The space shooter is very simple and could do with more missions, and additional end-game and group content is, as always, high on the list of player demands. The main turn off about the game is the official forums, which remind me all too much of the Mos Eisley Cantina and is infested with people who by turns criticise the game for being either too much or not enough like world of warcraft. Occasionally both at the same time.

I think this game would be great for people who like star wars or like MMO's, however if you're tired of the tropes of the genre(cooldown management, the Tank,Healer DPS triumvirate etc.) you may find it lacking in innovation. Hardcore MMO players who like to blast through content without experiencing it may also find it a bit on the easy side.

My recommendation is trust NO User/Customer Ratings/Reviews (good or bad) and use only Reputable Critics that have a long standing in the gaming industry. Yes, they could be paid to lie too, but they have better accountability and can be more easily prosecuted if they lie. >SWTOR was made to be different than other MMORPGs by making story-line one of the highlights of the game. Voice acting goes a very long way in making a person feel a story is real, or cheesy. For me, one who likes a good story, the voice acting is top notch in SWTOR compared to other games and made me feel a part of the Star Wars world. >YOU feel more apart of the Star Wars world due to the story, but the story is not etched in stone. The story is based on choices you make in conversations you have with a multitude of characters you encounter. This allows you to become the character you envision and gives a stronger connection to that character's story. >COMPANIONS in SWTOR actually can help you complete quests by fighting by your side to help kill the enemies! They also allow for different story lines to emerge for your character. You form a relationship (which can be friendly or mean, romantic or hated) with your companion too, thus adding more attachment to the world you are in. You can order your companions to do work for you (create items or find materials/items on their own small missions) when you are doing other quests without them. Each character type has their own set of 5 unique companions. >OTHER games in the genre that I have played have given me a lot of fun, but over time they started getting away from an adult atmosphere and consistently increasing content that was goofy, cutesy, off the wall, catering to younger gamers, and specific cultural groups. However, SWTOR does not give me any of that immature and out of place feel. Even though the Star Wars franchise has a multitude of young fans, this game plays on a young adult to adult level story line and the people I usually run across are mature adults. >WHEN you create a character you choose which server you want to play on. The list of servers you choose from tell you a general population of players on that server. There are a lot of servers and the population will read either Light, Standard, or Heavy. CHOOSE a HEAVY server! I highly recommend Heavy (or at least Standard) because even if you like to be a loner, being on a Heavy server will not bother you once you learn how to ignore people through the settings options; and loners may find out that they actually like the multi-player aspect, which then being on a heavy server would be important since you currently cannot transfer characters to other servers. >I HAVE 9 characters, with my highest level character being level 40 (current max. is level 50). I will be playing at least a few more months before all my characters are maxed out on level and then will be able to experience more of the high end content (or lack of that I have read about). The game has already made major additions to the game since I have been playing, recently adding the legacy feature which is for higher level characters. As with all MMORPGs, updates and expansions are happening on a regular basis with new fun content added regularly. So, meanwhile I am enjoying the game and feel the money I have spent has been more than worthwhile. My recommendation is to try all the 8 different classes and enjoy each of their unique story lines to get the most out of the game. >GRAPHICS are not top notch. I love great visual productions in games, t.v., and movies, and SWTOR does not go to extremes to get the most high end visual effects possible in the current video game market. I found this is common in MMORPGs and it may be because of the high amount of people playing the game online. However, the content and story lines of the game totally make up for my love of peak performance graphics. Graphics on SWTOR I would rate about 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. >IF you really want to know all the features the game has, go to the SWTOR website to see all the features the game offers. >IN CONCLUSION, this game was in development for years before its release (Dec/2011) and it shows. The depth in all areas is well thought out and well done. The Star Wars franchise is huge and they have used their many resources to create a game that is very much polished and high quality. This game stands apart from other MMORPGs because of the emphasis on story which allows a gamer to feel a stronger connection to their character, the Star Wars universe, and the game itself. Regardless of negative points and/or reviews, this game IS a High Quality game due to the depth of the game and the emphasis of story that has been well developed. Expand

It 'feels' like Star Wars having similar atmospheres to KOTOR etc, helped by most planets being well designed and unique from eachother. It is not an elitist docuhe bag fest like WoW.

Bad - Role play is still not as strong as a single player, offline game, as with all MMO's. Graphics aren't great.

Verdict - if you love Star Wars and particularly the KOTOR games, you will love this. The best MMO out there by a long way.

The very small gripes I have about the game are minuscule compared to the overall value of the now "free to play", experience. I'll admit that some of the character models are a wonky and somewhat cartoonish, but that sensation is easily forgotten as one becomes further immersed in the story line and game play. I would also like to see Bioware/EA open up the source for add-ons, but this is far from a deal breaker. Space combat is a nice throwback to rebel assault - great game. Although I would like to see something a bit deeper - maybe something closer to a starfox feel, but there are plans to improve it at the moment.
Like most popular new games there are a lot of negative comments out there. I think this is common everywhere. Reading some of the critic reviews will give you a better insight if this game is for you or not.

If you notice alot of the complaints on here are minor issues, minor complaints about small details that don't even matter. Overall the game is FUN.

The game is designed to be savored and enjoyed, not rushed through. Of course you will have problems finding groups if you have rushed forward through PUG groups and gotten to a point to where your gear completely sucks. You have to take time to farm rep, lightside/darkside points and commendations if you want to be abe to compete later on.

It's designed where backtracking and building your character up is absolutely essential and quite enjoyable. It's old school RPG gameplay mixed with an MMO environment that gradually builds as your character does.

Take time and enjoy the game, don't rush it, make the most of all the content, in the end it pays off ALOT. Most MMO's don't payoff until you get into big groups, Star Wars TOR pays off constantly and is enjoyable for every type of gamer.

It's a melding of casual and hardcore structure that until this point all other MMO's have failed to combine. It's isn't super easy and at the same time isn't extremely difficult, teamwork and strategy can make just as much difference as stats and gear.

The balance is strong with this one.

If you are a social gamer, the guilds are plentyful and I've come across some really nice players who are willing to help. The game has not gone through any major re-vamp since its release showing they really took their time prior to releasing it. The story line is amazing and I have had 0 problems with graphics or slow down. To be fair though, the chat system is not as good as I think it could be and there is no online talking chat service available, players instead opt for other chat options... I prefer to just type but I see the fun in talking with buddies while playing...
Finally the side games... there are 3 different PVP games that are played and I have not seen mentioned anywhere. One is like a football game where players get a ball and try to score while the other team tries to stop u. One is a capture the flag style game, and the final is a break through walls game while the other team tries to stop u. All are fun.
If you just want a game to kick back to and have a good time this game is for u. If you want to lvl up and become the strongest jedi in the universe, this is it. If u r looking for something like WoW, this is not it. The WoW game has NOTHING of the depth or story line this does. This is also easy to navigate in and UNDERSTAND what quest you are on, what you are doing, and where to go next (With thrown in side quests and some fun crafting options)

They've come to identify with their captors, and the idea of another company coming along and creating something better than the company they're currently attached to is just downright frightening.

Star Wars Galaxies was run by SOE; the same disaster of a group that handled DCUO and a number of other fail-sauce MMO's. SWG was a solid first shot, but fell apart as soon as they introduced the Jedi without any proper counter-balanced class.

Now, does this game take a lot of what's right with WoW and do it? Sure it does. Name a single MMO that has come out in the past 7 years that hasn't borrowed from WoW in some form or fashion.

Then you get the whiners that are complaining about the instancing of zones. Instanced zones means more stable servers, less crashing, less disconnects. As Martha Stewart would say, "It's a good thing!"

The truth about SWTOR is that this game is wicked good. The graphics on a good video card look fantastic. If you're playing on some crap rig with less than a GTX 4xx then you're missing out. Top notch MMO, the culmination of the last 10 years of the genre with the addition of fully voiced branching path storylines and quests. Impossible to go back to any other MMO and the lame quest text boxes after playing SW:TOR. Multiple characters over level 30 (one 50) and still cannot get enough. The bugs will be ironed out, and already new content is up on the test server.

With the exception of Space Combat being so generic, this is a fantastic game! Though similar in its core to World of Warcraft, I actually care about the storyline. In WoW I was gone after 1 month of play from boredom which I don't foresee here. Hopefully, Space will be expanded upon so that it's closer to Star Wars Galaxies. Unless there is a game for this in particular I'm unaware of?

LucasArts generally exercised greater quality control of Star Wars games than most licensed properties receive, though that didn't necessarily translate into titles that were actually good. I've played a few other Star Wars games in the past, and while the SNES platformers were pretty good, this one is even better. Knights of the Old Republic may just be the best game in the franchise, and succeeds at being a top-tier RPG even if one has no interest in Star Wars. BioWare did the license proud.

I wound up bailing out on Star Wars: The Old Republic well before hitting the level cap, but not before digging into it more so than any other MMO I've played. Even if it is an unhappy marriage between two wildly different game types, the fact that it kept me hooked for so long at least counts for something.

A good game. It pays excellent homage to the film series (even though it's set before the movies), and is a really solid MMO.
