But what time doesn't improve (Like graphics, financial support) is simply perfect in this game. This is the ONLY game I've known that actually give you choices that you need to think about. The star wars ultimate Dilemma, Dark Side or Light Side, come in this game stronger then ever- You will face situations when you actually think- "hey, The Jedi code is to tense, Nothing will happen if I just use my force for little personal gain this one time" And you actually feel the burden of being a Jedi. (Why pay 500 credits for parking when you can just "convince" someone you don't need to un-violently?, This is one tiny example). Until today I have never seen choises in games so real and also effect the story line so deeply. Dialogue in this game is very advanced. Most of the times there are actually right and wrong answers and failing them will not come unforigiven. (Ever been put on trial in a RPG? this is one true masterpiece!) Plus it's Brilliant idea to use the Jedi ability to understand foreign language to cut off text acting- Personally I don't mind if the voice is total rubbish to me as long as the actual text is rich and developed. Character building in this game is great- you decide for you and your companions what are they going to be good at (Jedi are divided into three classes- depending on the light sabre skill and their force manipulation skill). There are many options and you are not going to use them all in one go. Plus the inventory allows many more modification for your weapons gadgets and robots. And of course- The storyline, which make this game a MUST for anyone who really loves star wars, even you ignore the effect of your choices on the plot. Expand

This game was fantastic. The storyline is very interesting and strong enough to keep you trucking through the low points of the game. Recommended for anyone who likes good stories, BioWare or Star Wars. Not Recommended for anyone who cannot tolerate the "press button to attack" system or someone who wants a Gameplay > Story star wars game (see Star Wars Battlefront if so)

Despite the flawed controls and slow gameplay, the writing, characters and content are well worth purchasing.I highly recommend buying if you like rpgs or if your a star wars fan.

The first of many Bioware role playing games that I will always love. Knights of the Old Republic stands as one of the best Star Wars games ever. With the original Xbox release back in 2003 I was only 11 when I first enjoyed this game and playing through it now 12 years later I still love diving in to play with different party members or a different class. As I was younger I thought this game was a perfect 10/10 in every aspect but just playing through it again Ive noticed some flaws.
Not to knock it down from its very high mantel but things that were bugging while playing. Numerous times while playing my character would get stuck on nothing, sometimes just opening a box and it would glitch/stutter and then couldn't be moved. Only way to move him was to switch to a party member to move the group away or reload the game. Also ran into the issue of the character not following through with a command during battle. The command would sit idle in the action bar but never follow through. Could have a enemy smack you four-five times with you standing still like a punching bag. Same games with the AI party members.
That is just me searching out for the flaws on a otherwise remarkable game.
Tip for anyone who plays.......SAVE OFTEN

Very solid game with a few negatives. Very enjoyable story line with great ending. Some great locations like mannan, imo best location in the game. Character progression is good but combat system is lacking mostly because bad enemy AI and bugs. Exploration/Movement/Camera work is mediocre, hitboxes are broken, UI is mess, u cant find **** in this game. Start of the game is pretty boring story wise but after Taris is much much better.

Story: 4,000 years before the rise of the Galactic Empire. Darth Malak, a former Jedi, Dark Lord of the Sith and Darth Revan's former apprentice, has unleashed a Sith armada against the Republic. Malak's aggression has left the Jedi scattered and vulnerable; many Jedi Knights have fallen in battle and others have sworn allegiance to Malak....

    Pros:
    • This game really does an excellent job in telling the story of a conflict within the Star Wars universe in a time in the universe Star Wars fans really didn't know much about in 2003. With many twists and turns you don't see coming and interesting characters with their own fascinating stories too.
    • Multiple endings depending on the decisions you make and they are great endings.

    Cons:
    • You really need to be nit-picky about cons with the story. But if I had a little one, it would just be the story is a little slow to start and takes it's time to get going.

Gameplay: The player choose from three basic character classes at the beginning of the game, and later choose from three Jedi subclasses. Each character has "skills" stats, tiered "feats", and later on, tiered Force powers.. Feats and Force powers are generally unlocked upon level-up, while the player is given skill points to distribute among their skills every level. Combat is round-based (like D&D) for most of the game you can have up to two companions with you.

    Pros:
    • The choice making and stat progressing system was very ground breaking for the time and the first time Bioware (or most western gaming companies) really were ambitious to make it work. It still holds up well and is an addictive aspect of the game.
    • Many different playstyles with your characters, so you can really make your character your own person with branching dialogue options, skills, blaster, swords, lightsabers and many force powers to choose from.
    • Exploring the planets has you engaged with the world with plenty of activities to get yourself immersed with it's characters, conflicts, quests and environments. With little mini games such as Pazak and Swoop Racing as well.
    • This game has a lot of replay value.
    • Took roughly 45 hours to beat the game, which is an excellent amount of playtime, especially with how you can get this game cheap these days.

    Cons:
    • Combat feels very simplistic. Plays a bit like D&D where you take turns to attack enemies and they attack you. Just feels very basic, underwhelming and compared to what Bioware does later on with other games. It functions alright, just overly simple.
    • The Ai can be really dumb or act weirdly. Such as getting stuck in a wall without you realising until you are forced to switch to them to fix it. Sometimes giving them a command can take ages for them to pull off and during dialogue or in-game cutscenes they can be in strange positions.
    • Sadly once you beat the game, it's over. No endgame or second playthrough with your cool equipment.

    Sound and Music:

    Pros:
    • The voice acting is top notch. With lots of really good dialogue and writing that actually feel unqiue to each character and adds to the the experience.
    • The sound fx just breaths Star Wars.
    • The music is really good. It captures each of the surroundings and settings very well and for original music, captures to vibe of Star Wars to a respectable degree. Of course we get some good old John WIlliams scores as well, but not many.

    Performance and Graphics:

    Pros:
    • Visually this game looks good for 2003 and good for Star Wars.
    • Frame rate was for the most part smooth.

    Cons:
    • Found many glitches during my time playing KOTOR. Most were harmless, but some caused certain save files to corrupt... this happened a good few times too.
    • The game crashed on me a good few times as well... which caused more save file corruptions...
    • Sometimes areas in the game world feel a little too empty with not enough scenery or objects around.

    Verdict:
I'm surprised I didn't played this game sooner. I love Bioware games, Lucas Arts and Star Wars, but never played the game that they made happen. This is a great RPG that tells a compelling and epic story with excellent characters, moral choices, character customization, and ones of the best Star Wars games ever made in a time where we were already getting some other great Star Wars games. It's has some flaws here and there with the performance issues being the real annoyance, But, at the end of the day, this game is completely worth every minute of your time.

It was an ok game, but not my type. I hated how it just pushes you into the game and it seems confusing, they kind of seem like The Movies characters. This is like World of Warcraft except Star Wars style and it's free. But I like the dueling arena and how you can go into peoples 'apartments' and steal their stuff. Evil or good?

The story is decent, aside from the big twist (which I won't spoil, but is literally the greatest twist ever in a video game, and I mean that, its better then the Spec Ops The Line twist, the To The Moon twist, the black ops twist, seriously, its amazing) the story is a standard good vs evil, which compared to the sequels awesome shades of grey comparison of the different sides to the force, its nothing special. It runs fine on Windows 7 after some tinkering (its nowhere near as hard to get running as KoToR 2). The combat is ok, most people insulting the game seem to be because they were expecting an action shooter with melee combat. In reality, its a simplified D&D turn based RPG (yes, it has a under the bonnet D20 rolling your hit chances) with a small party of 3. The graphics are bearable modern day, and were nothing special when they came out. The animations in combat are incredible, with the enemy actually moving to parry attacks and attempt to block enemy shots, instead of just standing still when the enemy attacks, but outside of combat, it gets pretty meh, sometimes falling to bethesda level bad. It has a good amount of gameplay despite almost being linear (24 hours). You do have choices, but rarely do you get the best kind of choice where both options have significant downsides and upsides, making the choice difficult. The skills are ok, although security is completely useless (you can break every storage container open without breaking items inside like in the sequel). Jedi powers are powerful...if your character is completely based around them which can cause early game to be an ass since your not a jedi at the start. Even the immune to force final boss can have his immunity nuetralized. There is some character development, but it is nowhere near at the level of Bioware's later series Mass Effect. In summary, its a good game, but its nothings special. I do recomend it tho, since that twist is in fact something special, and you don't get the same shock value if you just look it up. (Seriously, its one of those incredible twists where its both completely unexpected, even tho the game CONSTANTLY hinted on it) Expand

No doubt about it, its one of the most wonderful stories ever made into a game. And one of the most awful "games" ever made from a gameplay standpoint. I'll move it a bump over average based on the excellent story, but regardless of how much this generation enjoys passive entertainment, this game began a downward spiral in RPG gameplay that ruined the genre for almost a decade (with a few notable exceptions).

You can't see all of those screens at once in "windowed transparent" mode nooo, that would be too hard to do. It gets better... I play at 1600x1200 and the inventory menu only takes up a quarter of the screen instead of stretching. Pure genius. "I've found that, so long as I equip my character's properly, I'm not using the pause functionality all that much." That's not a good thing... combat is supposed to have variety, a strategy of executing the right moves at the right time, and so far the only thing I see myself doing is changing to melee weapons when the enemy gets in point blank range of one of my party members. "While I haven't yet reached Jedi status, the atmosphere of the game manages to capture that 'Star Wars' magic than many other recent LucasArts games." Hmm, now should I buy a "Blaster" or a "Heavy Blaster?" What happened to the custom names that they have for armor or grenades (Cryoban Grenade sounds a lot better then Blaster to me). And of course there is also the fact that Darth Malak is completely made up -- Exar Kun led the Sith Insurrection of 4000 PBY. But why use something that was already beatifully created when they could make something absurd up? This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am just a novice game player, but I enjoy it and play often. This game, while very intriguing and attractive in most senses, has a few MAJOR flaws. In the early game stages, information is difficult to come by and money to support the characters during the quests is next to impossible to acquire, making the game somewhat boring at times. I want to play the game not some stupid card game that you've got approx. 40-50% of winning, and the stakes are too low to be of much interest anyway. Or swoop bike racing that you can't beat the lowest time and dump 1000 credits trying . The money should be easier to come by without having to turn to the dark side and murdering people for it. Thats only the beginning of the problems. Sometime the characters just stand there while being mauled by a gang of sand people or other creatures that wind up killing your party before a light saber or blaster can be drawn. Something is wrong with the game command interface. Great story and respectable graphics, but the glitches and continuity are not very good, in my opinion. Expand

Even though it is an old game I decided to buy it as it received such praise and a high rating.

My screen is 1920x1080, but there was no option for wide screen with 1280x1024 being the widest option with not even an option to play in windowed mode.

I know the graphics are old and don't look that good as it is, but the game looks even more terrible since I can't optomise the screen.

Characters end up looking squashed, short and wierdly wide looking. Can't even customise how my character looks. Only get to choose out of several faces, a face I like best. Doesn't even give you minor choice of choosing hair or eye colour.

Combat is boring. With a bug that sometimes after battle my character end ups frozen not able to move unless I reload. As well as occasional crashing, though the game only crashed around half a dozen times. I did not have any problems getting the game to run, I have windows 7 64 bit and my PC is only 3 years old.

Quests are rather dull and unimaginative, mostly just fetch this or kill that.
With a lot of endless walking down boring corridors.

The game is sort of alright. Though Overhyped. To me it's not as good as most make out.
There are heaps better more enjoyable RPG's out there, that aren't so flawed.

The awesome story, imaginative deep star wars Universe and interesting characters is the only thing for me that makes this game worth playing.

    WARNING SPOILERS:

Also in the last battle I did not have any offensive force powers, only support powers. As I made my character support and the other jedi's in my party more offensive. I did not realise this would be a bad thing till I got to the last boss.

So since you can only fight Malak solo and he leeches health from the jedi trapped in the tanks every time I damage him, is annoying as the only way to destroy the tanks is with offensive force powers which I do not have, so this made the battle very long, frustrating and drawn out. I don't want to start the game again and don't have any previous saves. I just used master speed to run away and avoid him and lay down mines, so he gets damaged a bit then drains a tank to heal, kept doing that until he drained all tanks before facing him so the fight would be more fair.

Then fought him with light sabre and master speed and healing, use stimulants and then run off when my force energy gets low and keep running until it replenishes and repeat until he goes down, it took quite a while though and finally managed to beat him and complete the game and get a rather dull game ending.

I was originally going to rate the game a 7 but because of the game punishing you if you chose no offensive powers with no other way to destroy the tanks and no respec if you made a mistake which I did not realise would happen as I wanted to play as a support class, seems very flawed and seems to make it that you can only beat the game best as a soldier. This game is way too old and flawed to recomend anymore.

This RPG does a few thing right. One of them I will mention for its rarity: Companions fight as you expect, and are useful in autonomous mode (very useful in the case of the wookie, if you give him a sword.) I usually don't care about companions' AI since I always turn it off and manage individuals individually. A habit I probably caught in the old days of unreliable scripts. Here, becauseThis RPG does a few thing right. Here, because of the 1st person view, I rarely switched to control a NPC directly, and letting them free worked just fine.

What isn't so fine is the narrative. This RPG is based on a movie for the 12 yo, so it's not surprising that the game is for the 12 yo as well. It didn't have to be, but that's not the problem, and I won't blame the game for that. Still, everything is shoehorned, and rather unimaginative. Like in all bad SF, entire planets are described as a uniform landscape and biosphere. In my country, each of them would fit in a 100 square kilometres area. In a planet-sized city, your game map is limited to a handful of corridors.

Like in all bad SF, aliens are not alien at all. They all behave like Americans, but with foreign accents, like Russian or Japanese. The alien languages, also very terrestrial sounding, are particularly annoying, and fail at being immersive. I don't expect much work on the construction of a language, but at least some consistency. Here, you won't even find a pattern after hearing one for hours: On the extreme contrary, you'll hear the exact same bollocks phrase, repeated over and over, on each different line of a dialogue, each time of course translated completely differently in the subtitles. Awful.

    Mechanics are generally poor.
    - My main character is maxed in every skill, while each of my companions knows only 1 skill, and is not as good as me. You can blame the ridiculously low number of skills if you like.
    - You can sneak, but only in solo mode.
    - And people shoot you as soon as you become visible. Before (yes, before) you strike.
    - Of course, scripted events keep taking you out of sneak mode at their leisure, because RPGs don't like RPG players.
    - Most doors are impervious to your maximised lockpicking skills.
    - Hacking computers or repairing robots costs more and is less rewarding than fighting, because RPGs are meant for barbarians.
    - Switching from a pistol to a sword takes about 7 minutes.
    - Your companions constantly block your way out of rooms.
    - Etc. You know the drill.

But you know what I really hated ? KOTOR defecates on all your choices after a few hours, and forces you to becomes that thing with the most ridiculous name you could ever call someone: a padawan. And I don't mean that the bunch of patronising twits you are brought to meet, those Charlemagne paladin ripoffs, force you to become one of them by way of a severe beating, or blackmail, or bribes, no, I mean that the dialogue doesn't even leave you the option to say no, let alone **** off.

Imagine if BG or PS:T let you play your own build for a while, then suddenly forced you into the most boring and unappealing fantasy class ever: the paladin. Well that is exactly what KOTOR does. Proving once again that most RPGs are not meant for RPG players. I tried for a bit, it was as I expected: my skill progression was over, my skill points gone, my strengths obsolete, in one word my heart wasn't in it anymore. Uninstall, delete, bury, forget.

Still, unlike me, you might enjoy this game, and because of its clichés. It's a mixed bag of flaws and qualities, but not nearly as bad as most of the overrated RPGs reviewed on this site. On the other hand, it often feels like Deus Ex, but not nearly as good as Deus Ex.

My main complaint is about user interface and the way how we manage our character inventory and skills. Simply it was cumbersome for me. I have discovered also that I don't like RPG games without really open world. And here you won't find such...

I thought that the plot twist was kinda unexpected and cool, but now that I'm older, I realize that it was dumb as hell. Without spoiling much, you're basically a "force-reprogrammed" Hitler in space whose crimes are easily forgiven and who has almost NEVER shown his face so as to be easily recognizable by everyone, not even by his elites.

Nevermind the slow and painful gameplay, the immense amount of irrational and forced situations make me give this game a 4. Only young people will be able to appreciate this video game, but adults will feel like their intelligence is being insulted.

So many faults this game has. Let's look at a few: (1) Two of the three playable character classes are useless. The game really wants you to be a fighter, and helps you along this path by making all the other "skills" (like Demolition, Repair) utterly useless. In the time you waste "casting" a spell (ahem, Force Power), you could have done several devastating melee attacks with your lightsabre instead. Tactics? I'm afraid not, this is strictly hack'n'slash. (3) The gameplay is one long clickfest. You use the same attacks in the same sequence on every single foe. Most of the time you just sit back and let the computer play the game itself. (4) Bosses. Completely immune to all Force Powers and status attacks. The final nail in the coffin for me. Just an example of how games haven't progressed from the 1980s. Need a challenging encounter? Make an enemy immune to everything! And that's not all (but enough). The first Star Wars game I played was Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. Thinking that it was such a great game, third person shooter where you can use cool lightsaber moves and force powers, I was looking for another. When Steam had their sale on this game for $2.50, and it had the highest Metascore of the entire Lucas Arts catalog at 93, I bought it. Biggest waste of $2.50 ever! It's not like old-school 2D games where you run around and click/press a button to attack an enemy, and it's nowhere near as good as Fallout (you can fight in both shooter and click/RPG mode), the gameplay/fighting is absolutely horrid and utterly boring. And the story/conversations just drag on forever. Unless you're some basement-of-mother's, pimple-faced, overweight, Chewbacca-costume wearing, full-size movie prop/cutout buying, Star Wars fanatic... you will hate this game. I had no idea the "critics" were that bad either, or maybe back in 2003, there were just no half-way decent PC games out at the time. Gameplay suck. Fights boring. U just press one botton. The graphics is good for their time. No updates. No new content, Story is pretty good, but I found many stone strong characters.

This is definitely in my top 10 games. I'm a huge Star Wars fan and so I decided to play through the game and pick up on lore. I liked this game so much that it was the initial game that made me love RPGs Since that first playthrough I've experienced Kotor 2 WoW Xenoblade and many other RPGs.
I will always recomend the game to anybody who is a Star Wars or RPG fan.
    The story is rich

The story is rich and well thought out. Several plot twists kept me excited for what came next. On both playthroughs I completed I did make a few mistakes. Not only did I kill Juhani both times, while not realizing she could join the party, but I never completed the Griff Sidequest or save Manaan's Kolto.
Regardless of it's mistakes, this is one of my favorites and every time events from the game are referenced in the Mandalorian or Clone Wars, I smile a little.

Any PC owner must play this game

10/10 easily. One of the best games I've ever played.
    The story was brilliant.
The quests were so interesting and there were so many options.
The RPG system was handled really well. Levelling up felt powerful and interesting.

The level of control that you have over your characters' actions is truly remarkable... Simply put, this is the best thing to happen to Star Wars since the original trilogy. [Feb 2004, p.112]
  2. This is a class act that builds and extends the Star Wars game franchise and PC gamers are getting something their kindred XBOX owners loved to bits and will not be disappointed in any way.
  3. It offers some pretty fundamental improvements over the Xbox version and stands as one of the best PC RPGs out there.
