I see some people complaining about the graphics and animations but when you start up a game from 2003 you gotta know what you're getting into(and the graphics are still better than cyberpunk). The companions and NPC's are so interesting. but the best part is that the game is only as long as you want it to be. like if you want to find everything and learn everything you can do that. If you just want to do everything that is necesary thats fine you do that. Overall this is one of the GOATS in terms of gaming. Expand

Just finished it. It was amazing: everything, from the sub-games, the plot, the game play, the combat system, the exploration. Couldn't think I could stand a so old graphic but yet it was a very satisfying experience. Can't wait to see the remake.

This game is awesome. Have played through to the end way to many times and keep discovering (or rediscovering) things I missed.

The graphics are very dated and gameplay doesn't stand up to todays standard, but if you want to experience a deep and surprisingly good Star Wars story, you should accept the old looks and UI and try it. Really hope there will be a similar Star Wars game

    Cons
    - the game came out in 2003 so yeah, it feels extremely clunky by today's standards
    - the turret minigame after leaving starports gets annoying after the first time you play it

Knights of the Old Republic is one of the best Star Wars games ever made. Hell it is one of the best RPGs ever made. In the day and age when the term Roleplaying Game is slapped on anything that has zero roleplaying, but it has a skill tree, KotOR stands out as one of the best games ever made.

The Light and Dark side conflict affords you different benefits for the various force powers. Unlocking different skills affords you with access to different solutions for the game's many sidequests. On top of that, you can have your party pick up your slack. For example, my Jedi Knight was hopeless with locks and demolitions so I brought Mission everywhere as she was my key to a lot of areas that would be otherwise locked off for me.

Besides Mission, every other party member is a standout on their own, with interesting stories to tell. I actually love how much support each of the Light and Dark characters gets as you have party members like HK-47 and Canderous Ordo who are purely with you for the Dark side players.

When it comes to the story, it remains interesting throughout the whole 40 hour run time. It also has one of the greatest and most spoiled twists in all of gaming, still effective after 20 years this game has been out.

If you are a fan of RPGs please give this older title a chance as this actually deserves its reputation of a classic masterpiece.

I agree with Ome Gee. If you bought this game thinking it was something other than an RPG, maybe you should learn to read. No, really, as the box has RPG all over it, as does the Steam download. Also, Bioware only make RPGs', so expecting anything else was a little silly. If it was scored low as an RPG however, I respect that peoples tastes are different. Personally I think it is a brilliant game, with a great storyline, and a lot of tactical combat. The only problem that I had with it on the first play through is the level cap, but if you play it through again, then you can plan your character better. Also I understand that the cap was for gameplay balance towards the end of the game. Definately give this game a chance. Expand

Igor - I think you should sit down and get to know the game before you start to THINK you know anything about the game! "There are only 3 classes (and 3 jedi classes which you can't unlock until far far into the game)" You haven't even passed Taris? and still you think you know all about the game! That is just lame... The Uniqe thing about this game is that you DON'T need Igor - I think you should sit down and get to know the game before you start to THINK you know anything about the game! "There are only 3 classes (and 3 jedi classes which you can't unlock until far far into the game)" You haven't even passed Taris? and still you think you know all about the game! That is just lame... The Uniqe thing about this game is that you DON'T need anymore than the 6 classes... you have everything you need, with all the skills you can improve, that makes up for all the "missing" classes you speak of... Of the main characters I have: a droid computer expert, a strong warrior, a warrior healer, a twi tech and 4 different jedi's each with different powers! There is no need to have 20+ classes, and that was plain stupid to even suggest it, and compare to SW Galaxies!!! This is a single player game for christ sake, with a main story!!! Galaxies is a whole world, trying to reflect different lives you can live! Well if you were even smart enough to notice, this doesn't work well in single player games, to be a bountyhunter or a smith.... I don't know about you, but I can never in my wildest dreams see a bounty hunter save the galaxy or become a jedi knight. You have the choice in the game(if you go the dark path) to make money collecting a few bounties as a side quest. The game dosn't use the Neverwinter Nights engine, this one is much more complex. If you notice then you will see light shining back from the twi'leks skin and so on. I can't even believe you would say that it uses the same graphics engine as NwN... when you get close to the grapichs in NwN you wil see how bad it really was, even in the highest resolutions. Besides the NwN engine was never constructed to run the HUGE inviroments in SWKotOR! It was totally crazy to even suggest it is the same engine! "You can only be human. Thought you could be one of those Twi'leks or Wookies? Well too bad, you can't even choose your race (NWN had 8). That's sad, because even in Jedi Academy there are 6 races you could choose from and that's an FPS" You want it to be like Jedi Academy?? Even if you choose another race, it is just another skin.. no different voice, nothing special, not even another name! If you took your time and compleeted more than just the first 5% of the game, you would know that you get to have many different races and caracters on your ship (9 besides the main caracter) and that you can take control over them as you pleese. Your main caracter is the one who speaks to people but you should be fine with that because in JK it is only the action it is about, so action only with a wookie in KotOR should not be your problem. "combat is supposed to have variety, a strategy of executing the right moves at the right time, and so far the only thing I see myself doing is changing to melee weapons when the enemy gets in point blank range of one of my party members" Well thanks for pointing another great thing about KotOR out. If you choose hard difficulty the game can be hard enough... and there will be a time when you have to change strategy... but my team goes like this: 1 melee, 1 middlerange with 2 blasters, and a sniper (long range). some places in the game you have to go alone and that changes everything. I agree in that Taris is the planet that takes most time and can be long sometimes, even though it is still great. But after Taris I couldn't stop myself again, I just had to see what happened next. The game took 50 hours to complete and I don't think I got all sidequests... a game that long and that good is very hard to find today. Well im off... got to play KotOR again to see how the dark side is :D Igor-->nothing personal, I juist think you should know something about a game before you go on and talk about it. Expand

Giving this game a bad score for being an RPG is silly, giving a game made in 2003 a bad score for not having next gen graphics a bad score is silly. KOTOR is a wonderfully deep RPG based in a living Star Wars universe. The game is wonderful. The only reason it didn't get a perfect score is because I found the controls to be less than intuitive. Bioware makes challenging games. They really push the boundary of: How much will I let myself get immersed and what mechanics will i explore? There is a wrong way to play and select stats and abilities and this is a good thing. There is still choice. You just have to know what you are doing to create the character you want to play. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is one of my all-time favorite Star Wars games. I love how it tells the story of what happened before any of the movies ever took place. The story follows your character who has no memory of his life, and goes out to find out. It turns out he is very sensitive in the force, and has the skills of a Jedi. Meanwhile, the game's main villain Darth Malek is looking for an ultimate weapon to power his Sith fleet. This game also has multiple endings depending on your choices in the game. If you make good choices (such as saving the lives of others, or helping the needy), then you follow the path of the Jedi, but if you make bad choices (killing the needy, torturing people), then you go onto the Sith. Making these choices will change not only your personality and traits, but also how events in the game will play out. I would give an example, but that would be spoiling too much. As for the gameplay, it is excellent. You have a lot of freedom to make choices in the game (not total freedom, but freedom enough), and you can have a lot of fun doing it too. The combat may be turn-based like in any other RPG, but you wouldn't know it from how graphic it is. There are many animations your character can do in combat, and it all makes it look so real. This makes the combat in this game much more enjoyable. The graphics are enjoyable as well. Everything in this game looks very bright and colorful. Overall, this is an excellent Star Wars game. However, believe it or not, this is not my favorite Star Wars game (that would be Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy). The only real problem I have with this game is its sequel. Unlike most people, I think that KOTOR II kind of, uh, sucks (read my review of that game for more details), but who am I to think that the first game is bad just because of its sequel? Overall this game is flawless, and it should not be judged by KOTOR II. Expand

One of the best Star Wars games ever made, KOTOR introduces an amnesiac protagonist ready to face his destiny. The best part is that we control his path in the story with moral choices with options to choose, in which they will reveal the light or dark path of our character. If the developers created a more complete character creator, this game would be just magnificent.

Great RPG. Great Star Wars game. Enjoyed it from A to Z. So much information about the Star Wars universe. Its hard to believe this game was made in 2003 since it is so full of information and there is so much to do and learn in this universe. No wonder why people are asking for KOTOR3 so much.

The story of this game is the real draw though, I don't want to spoil it for the few who haven't gone through it, but there is a reason it is considered one of the best game endings. All in all despite a few technical problems with the game, it is a well crafted, amazing adventure everyone should enjoy. Expand

Some words of warning. I didn't really mind the graphics (after setting every graphics setting to max), but if you haven't played any older games, it might be an issue for you. Especially character and facial animation are very simplistic by today's standards. The game also has problems with Win 7. There are some instructions how to get around this, but at least for me, it took some experimenting before the game started working.

The KotOR series is one of my favourite series. When I first played the game, I had high hopes for it. The game impressed me, despite its age. Few games give as many choices, plot twists, and lovable characters. Sadly, I did get stuck and ended up looking up a quick guide, which ended up spoiling a bit plot twist.

The game is all about story and choices. You get to play the main character. But who and what that main character is or is not is up to you. You even get to choose what he looks like and if he is a he or a she.

The game has so much choice that replayablitiy is a serious asset of the game. You start off as one of 4 none Jedi characters. Then later become one of 4 Jedi classes. Mixing and matching these class combinations gives you essentially 16 different characters to play. But the way they level up these skills is entirely up to you. And there are many skills to choose from.

I wouldn't call it a hardcore combat game, but this game gives you plenty of action. Then to add to the replayablity you can replay the same character and see the changes when you maybe jump from the light to the dark side. This coupled with the many class combos gives even more replayablity. And the differences can be significant enough where the story feels totally different. They even let you choose the areas you visit in any order you want. Then you not only have your story but each of your companions has their own story.

On top of this wonderful cake, they give you a cherry on top with plenty of mini games to keep you from getting bored. Like speeder racing, a card game you can gamble your hard won earnings on. An upgrade system for all your equipment etc.

And the incredible part is the story is different when you replay. But it is so familiar you feel like you are in charge. You may know the ending, but the choices you make can really put a twist on your story.

A classic Star Wars tale and one of the great RPGs of days gone past. The graphics won't hold up to standards today, but this game is worth playing through at least once just for the experience. It's best if you're unspoiled on the story, but even if you aren't, it's worth playing through and watching it all unfold. This is a game that perfectly captured the magic of the Star Wars setting!

The dialogue is very interesting and enjoyable and once your characters get skilled enough to stop missing targets at point blank range over and over and over (You can literally miss doors with melee weapons at the beginning off the game) the animations in light saber fights are fun to watch. Visit old Star Wars worlds and new ones in which ever order you want and with whatever companions you want who have their own unique commentaries and personalities adding to the tremendous replay value. The inventory system is among the worst I've ever seen but given the age of the game it is passable. There are many places to sell loot and buy weapons and armour and the game genuinely tempts you to choose the dark side to get more credits to buy some of the tremendously expensive items some vendors have. This game is a MASTERPIECE because the aforementioned flaws of this game are not enough to negatively effect your experience. This is a timeless game for all to enjoy! Expand

On par with Mass Effect 2 and better than Dragon Age: Origins. I feel like this is one of the greatest RPG's of all time but that isn't nostalgia talking... (since this is my second time playing this game after a year first trying KOTOR.) I feel that this game deserves a place in the top 100 video games of all time.

I'll spare you the details but the major positives for this game are amazing character development, great story, good pacing and lots of actions and missions to play, with the interesting characters and missions you cannot help but take your sweet time enjoying what KOTOR has to offer. It's like the father of Mass Effect.. Even as a old game it's worth playing for the story and the plot twist is probably one of the greatest plot twists told in video game history and I'm not overreacting when I say this. It also tells one of thr best star wars story even better then the orginal trilogy in terms of orginal story. Shame it has to be ruined by further star wars lore but that's a different story.

Although the character development isn't as strong as Mass Effect and Dragon Age Origins which doesn't give you enough dialogue to appreciate the character. It was enough to give the character some back story. Shame that certain characters are favored, treating them with more dialogue options than the ladder which as I said disappoints me because some characters I felt like were more for cannon fodder rather than a buddy in your squad. (T3m4 and zallbar are some examples) The dialogue in KOTOR is also very black and white.. (aka Dark Side and Light Side) and also I felt like some dialogue whatever you choose led to the same dialogue outcome even without a dialogue change. The dialogue isn't strong like Mass Effect but strong enough to care about what's going on. But the characters comments throughout missions are intereating to hear which makes every encounter different then the last playthrough. Also story progresses very well... Pacing is great and even though the story is quite linear with the only big differences is in the end. I found the planets you explore was well thought out and fun to play through with levithan and taris being personal favourites, the only map I didin't like was the final area. Where the difficultly and final boss were suddenly difficult and tedious to play through if you didin't properly set up or built your character.

Also a problem I have with this game is 2 things... 1 has to be the combat, it feels outdated... But it was the best combat for these types of rpgs where combat isn't just a point and click but it varies on dice rolls and different character builds. In the end thought it feels like I'm playing baldur's gate which is okay and acceptable at times but it's sometimes can be tedious and undeniably punishing if you choose force powers/feats and skill points incorrectly. But rewarding if choose it correctly. So take your time and read through the descriptions and understand the game... otherwise you'll make a mistake forcing you to reset the game or continue because points cannot be reverted unless with a previous save. Also the game is poorly optimized for this generation of computer hardware... AMD's cards cannot even start the game without certain graphic settings turned off and the effects such as smoke, fog and explosions give me a drastic change in FPS dipping to the low 10's and in rare cases crashes the game. The game poorly runs even as a old game... I had older games run better than KOTOR so that's no excuse.

I usually don't recommend games to anyone in my review but this will be an exception.... If you haven't played this game, play it. Even if you aren't a huge fan of star wars like me... Play this game right now... this game was a lot of fun. You will love everything about this game, sure it's a pain to setup on a new computer with windows 7 but it's honestly worth it. If you liked Star Wars or any other bioware game or if you like good rpgs... then play this game, you won't regret it. I stated before that this could be one of the greatest games ever... But this is for sure the best star wars game out there.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Peace is a lie, there is only passion.

İnsanlar bunun en iyi star wars oyunu hatta filmleri de dahil ederek deneyimi olduğunu söylediklerinde inanmamazlık etmemiştim. Zira star wars filmlerini her zaman gayri ciddi bulmuştum.

Turn based'i divinity serisinden falan çok severim ama real time turn based'den nefret ediyorum. Bana mantıksız geliyor. Oyunun başında ekibimin blaster'la dakikalarca çıv çıv çıv dibindeki adamı vuramaması, boşa sallanan ışın kılıçları falan acayip keyfimi kaçırdı. Nasıl olsa seneye remake'i geleek diye neredeyse oyunu bırakacaktım.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Wow... just wow. This game is amazing! The only thing restricting me from giving this game a perfect ten is just because of how outdated it is (and no, I'm not bashing the 2003 graphics). The save-system is slightly wonky, there are a multitude of glitches, and at certain times the combat can be unfairly difficult. But hidden behind all that is an amazing RPG.

Truly one of the best RPG games of all time. If you are a Star Wars fan (like me), then this is an absolute must play, even if you aren't this is still a great game. This is a very good game, however its age truly shows today, the gameplay is clunky and boring and repetitive, and while their is a lot of depth, this game is outclassed in every single way except for the story by its sequel, and the twist is obvious, very obvious, also wtf am I stuck on? the air?

A masterpiece of a game, especially for the time of it's release. The most interesting era of Star Wars that is not on the big screen. Only reason i'm not putting 10 is because of some bugs that still exist.

This game is great, the story is good, the companions and the other characters are memorable(Bastilla being the greatest in my opinion :) ), the soundtrack is a total banger(I mean it lives up to the John Williams quality) not to mention the storytelling. Definitely play this

While I do not believe this game deserves full marks, as I was expecting something greater from the makers of "Baldurs Gate", this is undoutably a great game (unless, like me, you're a more 'hardcore' fan of rpgs). Also, on my version, there is a bug which stops you from progressing (on tattoine near the entrance of the sand peoples hq), and while I'm sure there is a patch for this, I have not yet aquired it. I reccomend this for novice rpg-ers, but for more experianced gamers out there who are looking for a more freeform, and generally better rpg, stick with elder scrolls 3 or neverwinter nights, as they have not been tainted by previous release on the xbox. KotOR was not without its flaws, but a great classic nonetheless. Systemically, it borrowed from thew Baldur's Gates and other 'pause and plan' combat RPG's... The pause and plan combat is definitely not for everyone, but I enjoyed it. The characters were the stars of the show. I mean, HK47, mirite?

in all honesty, this game was boring, the action was you target one person and wait for the turns to go by, so more of a turn based combat scenario, and i didnt really here much music to keep you playing....
the story was what kept me in the game, and the several different ways to end the game its really story based more than anything.... fun-6, story-10, gameplay-8, and theirs nothing

The level of control that you have over your characters' actions is truly remarkable... Simply put, this is the best thing to happen to Star Wars since the original trilogy. [Feb 2004, p.112]
  2. This is a class act that builds and extends the Star Wars game franchise and PC gamers are getting something their kindred XBOX owners loved to bits and will not be disappointed in any way.
  3. It offers some pretty fundamental improvements over the Xbox version and stands as one of the best PC RPGs out there.
