Very good cRPG, with a solid history and well written characters... As good as KOTOR but with little improvements, it depends completely on a mod to unlock all content... (Without mod not more than 7/10)

    Cons
    - 2005 RPG - clunkiness ensues
    - mired with more technical issues than the first game
    - extremely helped by the Restored Content Mod as it ads events, items and cut content that makes the game feel a lot better

The Sith Lords is an amazing continuation of the stellar KotOR in every aspect besides technical. The game has been through a troubled and rushed development cycle leaving a lot of the content on the cutting room floor. Luckily we can see it today in a much more complete form through the community Restored Content Mod.

When it comes to the story, it is much looser than the first game. This is a fantastic thing for the sequel as it allows for much more opportunity to shape your character into being however you like it.

This is accomplished through a take on the Force that is so nuanced, I have not seen it replicated in any other Star Wars media. The philosophical angles through which the Force is studied in this game uncovers the darker and stagnant parts of the Light side, and the more caring and brutal parts of the Dark.

All of this is accomplished through one of the most interesting Star Wars characters ever made, Kreia. When I was younger I hated her as she took some of the most antagonistic stances against my goody two shoes character that I have ever seen. Replaying this game as an adult, Kreia is possibly one of the best representations of the Light side tempered by Dark and Dark side tempered by Light I have ever seen.

What also helps with this nuanced take is the dialogue. A lot of games offer me dialogue of three choices: Nice guy, Neutral potato and a Petulant child. This game, no no no. Almost every statement by any character has between six to ten responses, where they don't just not allow people's abuse, you make good points alongside that. Talking smack to Atris while standing your ground as a respectable human being is one of my favorite moments still to this day.

The combat has seen some improvements through new skills. The added benefit of being able to mentor most party members into becoming Jedi allows for some of the most fun gameplay the series ever had.

All in all, The Sith Lords is one of the best RPGs ever made and you should do yourself a favor of picking it up when you have time.

Indeed, Obsidian makes very good rpg games. This is one of them. Various characters and developing them is very enjoyable. Dialogues are very good. The Star Wars world and atmosphere is very good. I wish they made movies about those times. There are 3 aspects of the game that I don't like.
    1. Upgrade is very enjoyable but a bit difficult to use. The menu could have been done better.

That said, specifically on pc you will be able to install the restored content mod, which is a project by the community to restore the game to its finished state. It isn’t perfect, but the game is definitely better with it than without.

Now that all that is over with, let’s get into the meat and potatoes. KOTOR 2 is a masterpiece when it comes to Star Wars storytelling. This game really shines not in the gameplay but when you get to learn about the world, your companions, or the overarching story. Overall, the gameplay is old and janky but it holds up well enough and will be easy to overlook if you’re in it for the story.

I used to be strongly ambiguous about the most central storyline and its believability, since the character in question is highly suspicious from the start, but could you really cut the stinky thread?

The variety of character builds that work at least in normal mode is wonderful.

The fact Steam build with mods I like often immobilizes a character in a fight maddens me, but I actually put up with for the sake of the other things the game offers :D

Sadly the games development was rushed because of a short deadline and had an abrupt ending. Without this it would be the best Star Wars videogame even making the excellent prequel look inferior. It improves on nearly all levels. It has a fascinating story with depth and a lot of philosophical themes. The RPG gameplay works well and the characters are even better than before. Without this it would be the best Star Wars videogame even making the excellent prequel look inferior. It improves on nearly all levels. It has a fascinating story with depth and a lot of philosophical themes. The RPG gameplay works well and the characters are even better than before. In short it would be a prime contender for a 10/10 without hesitation and even with the abrupt ending I feel compelled to lean in this direction. I must admit that some of the enjoyment depends on how much patched your version of the game is. At release it was quite full of bugs and this harmed the immersion and enjoyment. Luckily for me I read about this and only got the game after the patches fixed the bug issues. Story: It is set a few years after the prequel which means approx 4000 years before the events of the original trilogy. When the Mandalorians attacked the Old Republic the Jedi order did not help in defeating them because of fear, hesitation and political motives (True defenders of peace and guardians of the Old Republic). A few Jedi rebelled against this ignorance lead by Revan and Malak who joined the Republic military and ultimately saved the Republic but turned later to the dark side and caused another conflict (Shown / resolved in the prequel). Your main character followed them into the war against the Mandalorians but refused to join them later on or turn to the dark side. Because of this the Jedi order exiled him and she/he became know as “The Exile”. After many years in exile the main character is drawn into new events that are again a threat to the Republic, Jedi order and have a connection to the past that he/she abandoned. The story is excellent and has a lot of depth. It shows you for example that there is more than black and white morality and that all decisions have effects (like a stone tossed into water creating ripples). It is enjoyable and immersive and one of the best (unfinished) stories in videogames. Sadly you clearly recognize that the last chapter was cut and the ending is abrupt and forced. Bonus for the philosophical themes as even today there are people discussing about it. Characters: This game has a magnificent cast of characters. Be it your party members or the mayor enemies. All have their own story, motives and world views. I should mention that some are restricted to the gender of the main character or your moral alignment. Only because of avoiding spoilers I will not mention my favorite characters but will remark that there are many I still remember after all the years. There are a lot of fond memories and their might be some (optional) events that change characters. Gameplay: You create your character similar to D&D rules (Dungeon and Dragons). I recommend to read a guide or two and GameFAQs is pretty good here. This means putting points into stats like strength, dexterity, constitution, wisdom, intelligence and charisma. With this you set up your play-style or better said character efficiency. For example more constitution means more health, dexterity works for evasion etc. Then there are the skills and I want to mention that the non combat skills are quite good too. I develop my persuasion and problem solving skills first as those were valuable (I still was able to be a terrific fighter later on). All skills have a purpose while I freely admit that some are better than others. Just think a bit about your preferences as you cant be a master of all. There are feats to improve your character and you have to chose a class. As per RPG standards you level up and develop your character even further. Setting / worldbuilding: This is how you use a license (Also a side-blow to EA). Like I already said they paid attention on the large scale by creating worlds that is fascinating, immersive and enjoyable and in details when you for example try to use Jedi mind manipulation on a Toydarian (Watto’s species) or explain how Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan could hold on their breath for so long in Episode 1. This is a near perfect use of the Star Wars universe. Technical: Again this was graphically impressive at the time of release but naturally aged a bit. Still good enough for me but graphic enthusiast will complain without any doubt. The soundtrack was well done. Bugs: I already mentioned that I joined later after the bugs were fixed. So I cant complain but must warn you for the unpatched experience. Overall this is an unfinished masterpiece and a classic. A sequel that puts its predecessor to shame. If they would have finished the final chapter and ironed out the bugs before release it would be one of the most legendary games of its time. I hesitate to lower my rating as I had so much fun with the game even when I say a rushed ending is a mayor sin in gaming. I give a 7/10 and say it is a 10/10 game up to the abrupt ending. Worth playing especially for Star Wars fans. Expand

Easily the best deconstruction on the Star Wars setting. An engaging tale that will make you question your preconceptions about the force and Star Wars as a hole. Some of the best written companions to ever grace an rpg, as expected from Obsidian's golden days. If you like rpgs, Star Wars or both then you owe it to yourself to check KOTOR 2.

First, the gameplay is not the greatest of all time but it still makes for a fun and challenging time. There are tons of options for playstyle and customization; From the weapons, armor, force powers, dialogue, skill points, you get to decide how you upgrade and use them.
Next, the worlds you get to play on are each so unique and fun to explore. Each world has it's own lore history too it which makes it easy to take your time on each planet and learn more about it.
Lastly, the best part of the game is the story it tells and the themes it reveals to the player. This is a story not about light and dark but rather a morally grey story. It introduces themes of forgiveness, obsession, and letting go(I'm sure there are more btw). SW: KOTOR 2 was truly ahead of its time for storytelling in videogames, and makes it easily one of the greatest RPGs of all-time.

While the first one may be better known, especially for it's twist, this is the superior game for me and the best star wars game. It felt like it added something to the universe by fleshing out the dark side, it's got great characters, a good story and a combat system that for it's time was probably the best compromise.

Uninspired sound design, absolutely buggy beyond belief, nonsensical story with plot holes all over the place, absurdly rushed ending. If this game were released today it would be slaughtered by users and critics alike for being a reskin of the original with all the interesting elements suddenly gone. Crashes during cutscenes, horribly coded pathing, no improvements to combat whatsoever.

You want to know how buggy this game is? There's a massive overhaul mod that fixes a large percentage of the original bugs and there are STILL bugs that they can't even fix. The QA department must have been nonexistent when they made this game and I worked in QA for a large developer during the years this game was in development. Completely inexcusable this was released in this state.

This game is lauded for no reason other than a lot of people loved KOTOR and didn't mind playing the exact same thing all over again, even if it's objectively worse in so many areas. Nihilus, Sion and Traya are cool potential characters that were done a complete disservice by how rushed and sloppy this title is.

Story: The game takes place five years after the first game, The Sith are hunting the Jedi down and your character "The Exile" is believed to be the last Jedi by the Sith...

    Pros:
    • Obsidian have managed to create a very engaging story where it questions many aspects of Star Wars we have known for years, while also continuing the story that Bioware started in Kotor 1. Although not as good as the first games, it does do some interesting ideas.
    • Great characters once again that play an important part in the story. Kreia especially is one of the most unique Star Wars characters and one of my personal favorites.
    • Multiple endings is always a nice touch.

    Cons:
    • Kotor 1 did take a bit of time to get it's story going, but Kotor 2 is even worse when it comes to this issue with the opening not being as interesting and even slower then the previous game.
    • The story in this game really focuses on certain side characters and villains more then other, which really overshadows some genuinely great characters that could of been used so much more. Same with the villains, they are interesting when looking at them in detail, but don't all get used to there full potential.
    • I know this wasn't really Obsidians fault, but the cut content really leaves a void in this game in certain places. This lead to certain parts really feeling rushed and certain places and some things never being explained properly.

Gameplay: For the most part, Kotor 2 plays almost like the previous game, with the exception of no level-cap and slightly different dialogue system.

    Pros:
    • Still have the freedom of being able to make your character your own with whatever force powers, weapons etc. you want to use.
    • Choice making is still a huge factor in this game, which can influence if your character is light side, dark side or in the middle of the road between the two. If you influence your character in one of these sides, you can get some handy bonuses too.
    • The dialogue system has improved, with your followers increasing or decreasing in your influence depending on what you say to them or certain actions they witness you do. If you influence them enough, you can actually train them to learn Jedi powers and further enhancing their usefulness.
    • Crafting system is a small addition, but a pleasant one.
    • Exploring the planets is still fun and finding things to do and learning about what goes on in your surroundings is still satisfying.
    • Took me 40-45 hours too complete and that was doing almost everything the game had to offer.

    Cons:
    • Since Kotor 2 is still using the Infinity engine, it has a lot of the same issues from the last game in terms of gameplay. The AI is still dumb as a brainless dolphin and still get stuck, are slow or even ignore commands you give them. The combat as well is still the very basis RNG-based, D&D system that isn't really in-depth by any means and just functions at least as a combat sysyem.
    • Sometimes for parts of the main story, certain characters are locked-out and forces you to use a fixed character. These are refreshing sequences, but they come off and linear and sometimes the surprise of them can leave you unprepared.
    • Backtracking is still an issue.
    • The choices you make also has to be said, don't really feel as if they make as much of an impact as they did in Kotor 1.
    • No new-game plus or end-game sadly.

    Sound and Music:

    Pros:
    • The soundtrack once again really hits the mark for making it sound like it's from Star Wars, while also having original tracks. A few return from the first game and a few John Williams track too. I'd have to boldly say I think it's better then the first games.
    • Voice acting is done to a high standard once again with excellent writing as well.
    • Sound fx are as Star Wars as ever.

    Cons:
    • A few hick-ups is syncing a few times, nothing major though.

    Perfromance and Graphics:

    Pros:
    • game more or less looks the same as the first, but with some better lighting and a few better textures, nothing amazing just good enough.

    Cons:
    • Did encounter a few annoying bugs, like one that skipped character dialogue which was the worst.
    • In-game cutscenes are still quite poor.
    • Had some nasty frame-rate drops in certain sections of the game.

Verdict: Knights of The Old Republic 2 - The Sith Lords was a good attempt from Obsidian to continue where Bioware left off in the first game and for the most part they have done a fairly good job. However, due to the cut-content, overly focused on some characters, big pacing issues and repeating gameplay issues from the first game, it is a good game at the end of the day though. I highly recommend you download the restore content mod that fills in some of the gaps that were missing, it makes it better, trust me.

But KOTOR 2 is just a masterpiece in rpg writing, brought to you by nothing less than Chris Avellone, the master writer and designer behind what a lot of people consider the best written crpg in existence: Planescape Torment.

For me, this is the definitive Star Wars experience and one of the best rpg's i've played.

KOTOR 1 (and pretty much every other Star Wars story) is very straightforward and primitive in its morality - the bad guys wear dark clothes and have red lightsabers and are evil; the good guys wear light robes and have colorful lightsabers and are unquestionably good. KOTOR 2, however, goes to great lengths to criticize the Jedi with their code and self-righteousness as much as the Sith with their unchecked hunger for power.

Unlike the first game, pretty much all the party members have an interesting and often dark back story to make conversations with them engaging. Also now you can influence your followers and even train 3 of them to become Jedi.

Anyway, I've just replayed the game for at least the third time, and my opinion still stands - a solid 10/10, if you like old-school RPGs and Star Wars, don't miss it out, they don't make games like these nowadays. Also make sure to install the Restored Content Modification, it fleshes out some dialogue and expands the ending.

KOTOR 2 is a good game that expands on KOTOR 1, but it has tons of major flaws.

There are some parts of the game that are simply impossible to beat without meta gaming, cheating, or using some kind of exploit. This happens because almost all of the party members are support characters. They have little or no combat ability, but there are multiple parts of the game where those support characters need to solo extremely difficult enemies. For example, there is a part where Atton needs to fight against 2 assassins at the same time. This fight is absolutely impossible to do without cheating because Atton's fighting skills are comparable to a midget with a spinal injury. He can't hit anything, his damage is pathetic because all of his points are in dexterity instead of strength (he's a rogue), but those assassins can take half his life in a matter of seconds. How does one beat that encounter? Run behind a certain piece of furniture so the assassins can't reach you and then shoot them. Honest to god, this requires about 1 or 2 minutes of shooting. I went to the bathroom while Atton was shooting them, and they were still alive by the time I came back. They are that difficult to hit, and they have that much life, so there's absolutely no chance of beating them when using mines, grenades, or melee.

A bit later on, a similar encounter happens with Mira trying to escape a certain situation. Mira, like Atton, is a rogue. She has no strength, she does very little damage, her armor class is pathetic, and she doesn't have much life. The problem is that she's forced to fight against a wookie that steamrolls her quite easily. The environment only has a few mines laying around to use in this fight, but it requires about 20 mines to kill the wookie. I used all of the environmental mines plus all 11 mines in my inventory, and the wookie was still alive. After winning that fight, she needs to kill about a dozen very powerful enemies that have double swords. She can't even solo 1 of them without using a med kit or a mandalorian shield, but they attack in pairs. Mines are out of the question because each enemy requires about 3 frag mines to kill. Mira's auto character leveling puts 0 points into stealth, so there's no way to sneak out of that part. There's just no way anyone could beat this without knowing exactly what came next in the game. If you typically sell or deconstruct mines for parts, there's no way to win. If you didn't manually select stealth specialization for her, there's no way to win. It's just horrendous game design.

My own character does quite well in this game because my character was built from the ground up to be a melee fighter with health regeneration and a very high armor class. I'm a veteran of Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2 which use the same D&D rules as KOTOR, so I'm familiar with how severely handicapped every other type of character is. Unfortunately, all the companions are handicapped. They work great as support characters because they can pick locks and use computers, but they are totally useless in combat, and the game seems to think it's a good idea to pit a rogue against a fighter and then laugh when the rogue dies every single time. My character's armor class is 34, but Mira's armor class at the same point in the game is 20. Is there any mystery why she gets destroyed so easily? I can't put any good armor on Mira because that armor is worn by the characters I actually use, and I can't switch armor at this point in the game. The only way to give proper gear to Mira is to load a save game from about 3 hours ago.

To get through these stupid parts of the game, one can download the KOTOR save game editor and buff Mira's stats. Set all of her attributes to 30 until the solo part ends and then dial them back down so she resumes her role as a person who hacks computers and dies in every fight.

    Pro
    - Great gameplay. With some minor improvement like easy change of melee and ranged even tough i mainly used melee on my MC , also the add off different forces/styles.
    - Great soundtrack music
    - Darker in setting or tone the kotor 1. Witch also makes for a darker plot. ( But i probably prefer the original due to a little be pacing ,but is entirely objective/subjective or whatever the say
    - Overall better and more interesting characters imo and villain .
    - Again a great rpg with a lot of choices yu can make , however the ending you get seems to be dependant on your choice in the end fo the game.
-You can play it at you own , pace it starts out linear, but eventually you get 4 planets you can choose to explore and take on in what order you want ,also able to go back an forth.
    - Just hard enough , even tough the bosses is pretty hard.
    - Replay value.

Cons: However there is some cons here compared to the original, i had problem with the mouse freezing right after cutescens so be sure to save regularly. But it seems too vary very much on people and there probably some fixes for it out there. Also looting from container and especially on npc sometimes i had to loot from a specific angel.
    - one of the places you visits feel to drag on a little and so does the last location your at.

Also i recommend you to use the restoration content mod
Great game a little bit worse then the original due to it cons how ever if it was for cons it would be very tight. It would basically be plot vs characters an tone/setting of the game a darker star wars or not as dark.

A truly amazing game, unfortunately shadowed by cut content. If only Obsidian was given more time, this could have been the best Star Wars game of all time, or at least on the same platform as its sister. If you enjoy moral dilemmas and a dark, deep story line that extends the Knights of the Old Republic (and gives more depth to The Old Republic MMO) timeline or simply if you are new to the scene, then I would highly recommend this game, it is a staple for any Star Wars fan. Darth Traya is probably one of the most amazingly written game characters I have ever known.

And if you are into modding, there is a restored content mod that injects parts that were cut out of the game into it. While it is nice to see some new content, it is slightly messy in how they have implemented it, but it does give companions some extra character development. And with the added steam support and resolution fix, there is simply nothing to be putting you off in trying Kotor 2.

I adored the first game but I went in with a blank slate, no expectations. It blew me out of the park, the story phenomenal, and I can't believe it but 10 years later, they came back and updated the game! I love it so much, this was perfect. Updated graphics, new force abilities tons of new planets. You genuinely struggle to make choices. Not like you can kill this guy or give him candy drrr which one is good?, I try to play as a good guy, but I make the choices I think are right and sometimes I'm wrong and I've done bad, it really shows human nature. Only complaint is the Peragus tutorial, kind of boring but I love to hate it. (also great job with the nostalgia from the first game it made me squeal seeing HK-47). Age hasn't been too kind to it, the graphics aren't the best and it's buggy at best on newer OS, but that doesn't stop it from being a true legendary classic. And look at that, a decade later and it gets updated to fix most problems and allow for us to return to KotOR II a few more times. Just because it got this big update don't think it's bug free, there's still plenty of them. For me I get achievements in weird locations for no reason - I got the Dancing Queen achievement when I left Peragus and didn't get the Peragus achievement until I got a little further into Telos. Not to mention the money achievement I randomly got when I made a small barter - but that's okay. There's no real game breaking bugs or anything and it's stable. It's a very good game and is usually set at a low price. If you love Star Wars or RPGs on a whole this is a must have along with KotOR I. I recommend starting with KotOR I first then moving on to two as you'll probably get pretty confused. The combat system is similar to an MMO, usually I'm not a fan of this combat system in single-player games but it actually works pretty good. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where to begin...Knights of the Old Republic 2 takes parts of the first game and makes them slightly better. But also takes aspects of it and makes them worse. Its hard to say if this game was a "good" game. Story wise the idea and concept of the exile had me lost from the start. Not caring who I was playing, I'm just a exiled ex-jedi wanting my precious lightsaber back. The story slightly picks up as you explore the plants and find the jedi masters but once you find them the game snowballs in a very werid direction. Leaving me only to beat it....to beat it. Even at the end I laugh to myself asking WTF was that. Where it does that part wrong, it adds some more depth to the worlds and have you return to some twice to finish main plot lines; That is something the first one didn't have. Party members was a huge plus, adding more interesting characters and having HK back in the scene.
Character development had some change to it as well with the secondary class selection about mid game, adding 3 sub classes you could follow to expand your ability. Gameplay was bugging, sometimes having my character stand still with actions/attacks in his que and not doing anything. Standing idle while being molly whopped by lightsabers....not so pleasant. Small bugs through the games added up to just be a nuisance; As the Environmental suit in the Alien bar not showing when Mira was in it, the constant getting stuck trying to open a container. ALL I wanted was my loot but no I had to stack twitching and couldn't open my container, I had to have one of my trusty side kicks do it.
Minus the negative parts they released a huge update to the game which made it up to date with graphics and to play on full resolution. It looks beautiful and blew me away when I booted it up. Great job there guys.

Unfortunately, KOTOR II was a classic Obsidian game in that it reached for the stars in many ways but was let down by some irritating technical bugs and a rushed timeline that led to a compressed and clipped ending to the game. There was also a great deal of material cut from the game that really should have been kept but had to be jettisoned to get the game out on a deadline. The game is playable without the fan patches but you will be doing yourself a disservice playing the original release.

This is one of the best RPGs in a wide array of areas. The characters have fleshed out backstories and feel very differentiated. The text tree use in this game is among the best ever done in terms of developing the characters you talk to and how it is integrated into the game. There are quite a few times where you can gain information and even traits through talking to crew members. This is one of my favorite parts of the game as simply from a mechanical perspective the idea of your character LITERALLY learning things from speech is represented by the fact that you gain actual stat bonuses etc, from the dialogue. There are speech points in battle(or just before) that also affect the enemy stats, this is very rare and you might not even know that is how the game is working but that is the level of detail put into the speech in this game. The light/dark system is certainly binary but this is the Star Wars universe, there is really no getting around the light/dark representations of the force and this honestly is probably the best game or movie for actually making the dark side seem more alluring to someone that is not literally evil.

The combat is not particularly good, though. You can have some fun seeing the lightsaber for the first time or using a new force skill here or there but it feels fairly weak compared to the rest of the game, but I'd still say its solid for an RPG. Stealth seems pretty much useless other than incredibly rare spots. There can also be some annoying cases of running back and forth for quests, and I swear to god the card game cheats, no one can convince me otherwise.

Overall though, when you look past its flaws you are in for a rare treat. This game ends up being much greater than the sum of its parts, because these types of experiences simply aren't made very often, 10/10.

It is easily my favorite game of all time, and one which has deeply impacted my life since the very first time I played it years ago as a tween. Don't let the title deceive you - this is not a Star Wars game. It is set in the Star Wars universe, but this does not follow the formula of Star Wars. There are Sith Lords to be defeated, but also Jedi to either find and rescue... or hunt and destroy. You are not a hero out to save or conquer the galaxy. You are an Exile, broken by war, ejected from the Jedi Order, and only now, returning to the galaxy after being exiled for going to war against the Mandalorians against the Council's wishes. You are not explicitly out to do good or evil - you decide that. You're only looking for answers, and none are to be found. There is no good, no evil, only compassion, which can bring pain, and cruelty, which may bring strength. There is a Light Side, but does it truly better the world? There is a Dark Side, but is it actually evil? These are the questions which hound you, posed by the cryptic and aged Kreia. Each member of the cast, from the most minor of characters to you, yourself, the player, carries and poses a question. Can anyone be redeemed? Should they be given the chance, no matter their wrongs? Which is greater: Loyalty and honor, or being true to oneself and one's own desires? What is the meaning of things such as love and hate? These are examples of such questions I've been asked indirectly and subtly by the cast of KOTOR II, and years later, I still haven't managed to answer even just the ones I've listed. There are SOME Star Wars aspects, naturally - the daring rogue, the journey into the dark cave, the fallen Jedi - but they are all done refreshingly. The rogue merely acts as he does to mask his true self for his own safety... the dark cave makes you confront your own past, present, and potential future... the fallen Jedi fell long ago...
And then there's the mechanical aspect of the game, which is brilliantly done, as well. Light Siders use LS force powers with a point reduction but DS with a point increase, and vice versa, but good planning, building, and gear can almost negate that. Want to play a Light Sider who storms through the field using Force Lightning and Force Choke? Sure. Dark Sider who can heal and buff himself and friends? Absolutely. The only possible issue is that you can't remain a grey character - the morality system requires you to either become Light or Dark. But maxing out either side gives some considerable passive buffs which vary to complement your class build, so it's actually quite forgivable.
As for the miscellaneous aspects of the game, the graphics aren't breathtaking (if that's a dealbreaker for you, maybe you should reconsider your approach - otherwise, I hope you'll forgive it), but the music is absolutely inspiring. It captures the atmosphere so perfectly, no matter what that atmosphere is. The voice acting, too, is done as well as some of the best animated films. As for replay value... through the roof. All my playthroughs over the years of this 50-75 hours of content game and I still feel like I'm not done with it.
Knights of the Old Republic II deserves this rating and every rating above an 8. I would place any kind of career I have as a literary scholar on the claim that this is one of the greatest video games to have ever been produced. I can concede not everybody may agree with that, for rational reasons, but be wary of those who don't, won't, or can't appreciate the depth, meaning, power, and value of this game. Get this game the moment the opportunity presents itself, and if you're playing PC, do yourself a favor and nab the Restored Content Mod which revived the content which remained in the game files but had to be cut due to a cruel release deadline. The Restored Content is across the entire game, but especially in the form of the entire planet M4-78, which has somewhat worse voice-acting, but still stands as a beautiful act of restoration to the game to make it even more whole. You may find the planet's ending somewhat anti-climactic, or you may find it a wonderful twist. Regardless, you'll find this game to be more than worth the money you spent on it - it'll be worth the time and thoughts and existential crises, too.

A good sequel to a great game. It improves on the first game in many ways, but was held back by a rushed development (missing content) and buggy release.

Put these things aside and you will still find the game to be amazingly good fun. This and it's prequel are two of the best Star Wars games ever made. A real shame that we don't get to see more of this kind of genius these days.

What some people call the "richness" of the characters is really just making up for the otherwise sloppy writing and game development.

The game was left by Obsidian in a totally unfinished state. There are parts of the game where they clearly intended to add more, but didn't. The final area is an example of this.

There is considerably less to explore in this game compared to the first game, and it is much more linear. Also you are never going to be awed by a richly created background on a planet like Manaan. Nope, instead you get a lot of very bland areas like Nar Shadaa and Telos. Nar Shadaa was especially disappointing as the enemy you fight there is probably the least interesting boss in both KOTOR 1 and 2, and the quests you do on the planet are cartoonish at best.

The balancing is also frankly laughable, as the additional force powers and advanced classes that they add to the game make it so that enemies are barely even scratching you. The pretty much make your jedi a god by the end, which makes it just not particularly fun if you are looking for any kind of challenge.

Ohh and then there are the bugs. The game is full of them, to the point where FANS HAD TO PATCH IT. Even then you only have to go onto other places like the Steam forums to see how many problems people have in trying to either get the game to work or to not crash when they enter their ship or go to a new area.

Overall it is inferior to KOTOR, even if KOTOR has a cartoonish final boss itself.

There were several times where the decisions I made in conversations left me stuck perpetually, unable to move on with the game, until I loaded a previous save state. The worst was of course with Atris, and this same problem has been recorded my many other players. Choosing one conversation line leads to no story progression, while others work just fine.

All in all, a really great game, held back by the many apparent bugs in the game.

The combat system has been basically reused in its entirety, not that that's a bad thing, and as such contains the same pause and direct action that let you plan your attacks wisely.
Presentation is where KOTOR 2 makes it's biggest downfall, and unfortunately, (in rare cases) can be an absolute deal breaker. During my first play through of the game I reached a point where I could go no further, hindered by incorrect ally NPC spawning. I was forced to start again, as any attempt to load any previous save from that character turned up fruitless.
Musically, it's as good as you'd expect. John William's theme is used less than you might imagine and in it's stead, a brand new orchestrated soundtrack accompanies your battles with foes and explorations into the unknown.
Overall, KOTOR 2 is what fans of the original have been asking for. Some may find that the over abundance of reused assets and gameplay elements invokes a sense of retreading old ground, but speaking a someone who found it hard to fully become immersed in the first game, KOTOR 2 made me feel like the planet hopping bad-ass I always knew I was destined to be. Unfortunately that mod can't fix everything wrong with this game though. The ending seems pretty abrupt, the added in planet is awful and interaction with characters seems to be missing something that the first game had nailed down.

When I knew that Obsidian, and not Bioware, was going to make the sequel, I was very skeptical but also excited at the same time. I was actually more eager for this game, at the time it lunched, than the movie Prequels.

And in ended up beeing the first game from Obsidian to suffer its “Obsidian syndrome”, in other words: an overly ambitious, unpolished and unfinished game plagued with bugs which ends up being strangely good for some reason. The people that played Alpha Protocol will understand what i'm trying to say. (Don't get me wrong, KOTOR 2 is a much better game than Alpha Protocol.)
What angers me the most, is the fact that, there is so much wasted potential in this game, the story is so elaborate and mysterious, and the atmosphere is so tense, you'll feel like something major is always about to happen.
The party members in this game are also much more interesting than the ones in Kotor, everyone acts like they have their own secret agenda, even the ones you think you can trust, start doing suspicious things behind your back. And at the same time, you'll be eager to know the fate of everyone from the first game, especially Revan and Bastila.
I wont spoil the story for you but when everything is said and done, the game ends with an aftertaste of plot holes and dead ends.
Knights of the old republic 2 has something special and it could have been one of the best sequels in gaming history, but all was lost when LucasArt putted profits first and fans second. So I'll forgive Obsidian for this one.
In conclusion what could have been an legendary game ended up being just great.

It begins steeped in thee unknown, with your arrival aboard a badly damaged derelict ship under mysterious circumstances, headed for an abandoned mining facility, you are quickly tasked, much like the games predecessor, to reveal your origins, and unveil the secrets surround your past and peer into the greater scope of the plot itself. Observing the surroundings as you go through the game, learning about the peoples and cultures you find yourself in the midst of, you may very well become overwhelmed by the wealth of characters you encounter, many who may reference a history your unfamiliar with. If you've played the previous title, or read any of the comics, you'll be aided to some extent in your quest for self-discovery with the prior knowledge of events that have had a profound effect on the peoples and environments you come across. (like a planet, ruined by the conflict that takes place in the first game) yet even if you have not, dont let this discourage you. These additions are largely atmospheric and text related, and will not significantly hinder you in your journey. The planets you travel to are well designed, thought out, and written. I found myself so capitivated by the strange and ordinary figures i encountered, that i constantly lost track of what the hell the main objective was i'm supposed to accomplish. More intriguing then that is your own companions. From the cryptically cynical, to comically murderous, no two characters in KOTOR II are alike. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find one that shares any noticeable similarities at all- in Mannerism, ideology, humor, or communication. One of the new features added from the original that adds to the relationship you have with these characters is influence. As the plot progresses you will be challenged at one point or another with one more dilemma after the other. What one praises you for the other might scorn. The higher standing you are with one, the more dialogue options become possible, and the lower, the less. The former, revealing fascinating insights into the supporting lore, their personal thoughts and stories, as well as even their most closely guarded secrets. The voice acting is exceptional, and adds a feeling of immersion that no technological marvels of graphic improvement could achieve. The plot is a dark, engrossing, well crafted and most of all original, drawing its strength from a number of story-telling aspects, from political drama, to a psychological thriller filled with unexpected twists, to its bits of comic relief, and surprisingly deep, philosophic moments of reflection, there's really a little something for everyone that really serves to open up the game to a broader audience. Overall, i can say with confidence, that this has been my favorite game i have had the pleasure of playing to date. I can not recommend it enough, and can truly say, its a wonder unto itself, a one of a kind piece that is the equal or greater of any classical example of literature of film. Its doesnt shine with the unfathomable graphic advances we have come to feel entitled to, and it may have been cut short due at the crunch time of development and thus feel awkwardly unfinished at times, yet once you can get over that, your in for a great time you wont soon forget. Everything has been pretty logically advanced; the combat's been fleshed out and is faster moving and slightly more varied, items are much more customizable and generally prettier, and there's tons of more variety in every aspect of the game. They also made another wise decision no need to muck around with the plebeian classes, been there, done that, we've already seen Jedi powers, give them to us from the beginning. The plot was also made much more complex in order to understand the entire story-line you have to actively fish out bits and pieces from your companions and always try and look out for the big picture. Every important conversation slips you a little of the larger puzzle, and there's no big revelation, oh, no. TSL doesn't baby you, if you don't figure it out yourself you're going to be left half in the dark for the rest of the game. Not only that, it even explains some elements of the first game which weren't quite explained. For sure, TSL is aimed at an older age group than its predecessor. The original Knights of the Old Republic was accessible by all age groups, but left little to the imagination as the plot progressed. TSL requires investigation, and in some cases thought, as the game occasionally deals with thoughts which aren't as simple as the typical quasi-philosophy of the Jedi, and enjoys giving different perspectives on events of the game their fill. After all that, however, The Sith Lords did have some drawbacks. It seemed to be an unfinished product even after doing as much as I could to further every single character's plot-line to their completion, some were still incapable of having their loose-ends tied up. I won't be too hard on the game though, with those aside the game was a huge, massive product, and for how ambitious as it was it's admirable that as much was put together well as was in the game. Despite its few flaws, I would say the game was excellent, and without a doubt superior to its predecessor. Expand

Secondly, none can say that the gameplay has been worsened (in fact some features have been developed). Considering how well-made KOTOR I was, I can't but promote this game with full-marks. I really think that people don't like this game only because they played the former before, and, unable to adapt to this one, they can't make a lucid analisys.

Essentially KotOR 2 is more of what we got in KotOR, it has a few bugs and is rough around the edges in places but again, I couldn't put it down for 24 hours (logged in Steam). Story-wise it's a little more interesting than KotOR and has some terrific moments, excellent voice acting as well as the return of some much-loved characters. Expand

if your looking into this play the first kotor before you delve into this part of the story blends together. but if your picking this up for the first time crafting is a must on your main character for the first play thru, blaster deflection alone once it really gets up there will not only save your butt, but kill people in the process. Also i would go as far as to say "i dare you to be good" it takes about 10x more work and side quests to play all light side. (jedi mind trick is considered dark side, as are a lot of the damaging powers.)

    Reviewing this game is complex.
At first you'll think this is only a sad and buggy re-rash of the previous title; because of similar characters (like HK-47) and similar stories (the amnesiac jedi aboard a ship). And gosh how this game start bad, you are thrown in a repetitive and bland dungeon, doing meaningless quests.

But then the game open up and you see a lot of qualities unseen in the previous title.
If Kotor 1 had a intense macro plot involving everything, but forced conversations with characters (for example, a character would bring a talk about his parents only to develop background) and an often unilateral representation of the world , Kotor 2 offers the opposite: the bigger plot isn't all that relevant or entertaining, but the characters are great and their personalities amazing. Some lines of Kreia and Handmaiden are writer's material, and it's a relief to finally see someone being original and playing with moral and ethical dicothomies in the Star Wars universe, an universe so hungry of this.
The downside is that Kotor 2 is an incomplete game with a lot of wasted potential, besides the fact that, unlike Kotor 1, you can't really enjoy all the social interation with characters due of the inexorable influence system; if you mistreat a character once you may never be able to interact fully with him again.
Play this game as weekend casual rpg and you won't disappointed. Also don't forget to install the mods.
If any bug happens, see the bright side: at least you are not playing a game with bioware level of writing.

There are lots of interactions with your party, and you can make them all better while talking to them, and you can make yourself better the same way. The number of levels you can go up is above 50, although nobody can achieve that in normal gameplay (I got just above 30, I think). There are lots and lots of mods out there which are being produced even now and they make the game much better. As most of you know, the game was released sooner that it should have, so some of the content was not introduced, and some of the bugs were left ingame. I think official and unofficial patches must be installed, to make the game deserve a perfect 10,like: TSL Restored Content Mod, (there is another content for restoration but much smaller, and it adds even more quests), patches (official and unofficial), mods for sabers, sound and ingame menu color (I changed it to blue like the first KOTOR), new, higher resolution videos of important scenes that replace the poor ones that are already in game (it's the same video, just higher res), TSL Save Game Editor, and the rest....I only encountered only ONE bug, on Nar Shadda with Red Eclipse quest, and there is a simple solution to that also. So, great game, a must play for everyone but only with patches and mods, and it's a blast. Expand

This is my favourite game ever, I constantly revisit it.
Gameplay and Item crafting really fleshed out, the story is phenomenal - I would even go far enough to say that it's story is 10x better than that of the original Knights.

This sequel is darker and narrative was deep and thoughtful, along with the dynamic characters and overarching story which kept you siphening through a philisophically grey mist to unravel the conflict which was intertwined with both the external and interpersonal. Highly recommend it, especially if you like over analyzing things as there is a lot to speculate on in this game (in a good way). Expand

One of the Best and the most flawed games you can find. Lucas Art forced an early release and denied Obsidian the chance to release a game patch later. On the good side TSLRCM fan-made mod managed to restore many of the cut contents, which lead to a bearable ending, especially for a Light Side player. Be advised: it makes the game very buggy on Onderon, but it's still worth it if you play for the story like I do. If you play the "vanilla" version than it deserves it's 7.8 score. KotOR 2: The Sith Lords has a slower pacing than the first game, and a different, darker and more reflective vibe. It's more rich and detailed, one of the deepest stories set in the Star Wars universe. It explores more gray, morally ambiguous areas, questioning the Force itself and its ways, the position of jedis in the galaxy and the effect of a war on them, the consequences of their actions, and their echoes. To say it plainly if that's not what you are looking for, KotOR2 won't do for you. Otherwise it will make for a fulfilling, if somewhat wearing experience, featuring some of the best NPCs ever seen in a RPG game, many of which will echo strongly the feeling you got from some of the NPCs from the masterpiece Planescape: Torment. I played the Sith Lords again recently and realised it deserved far ore credit than I had originally given it. Kotor 1 is y favourite game of all time, and I always looked on Sith Lords as an inferior follow-up. On further inspection, it's only really the ending that sucked.
In the Sith Lords you have one of the best opening sequences - exciting and gripping - of any gae I have played.

In the Sith Lords you have one of the best opening sequences - exciting and gripping - of any gae I have played. Obsidian kept the good looks and a similar interface, made the Items available more interesting and varied, made the characters far more interesting, and went for a more complex plot. I still think the ending was a shame, it felt so sudden and rushed and The Trayus Core scene just felt ridiculous. But the Sith Lords is a sequel not to be missed.

This game truly gives you the sense of being a powerful Jedi. The journey is amazing, though the intro level is a bit long and painful. Once you get into the meat of the game, however, I can't think of another game that is more entertaining for an RPG player. The product was rushed, leaving out a lot of important content, which was the reason for its relatively lower score among critics, but with The Sith Lords: Restored Content Mod, available to all PC users, pretty much the entire game has been restored to what the finished product was supposed to be. This game is very buggy and completely unfinished. But it's got a great storyline with memorable characters, an interesting plot and plenty of Star Wars goodness. The gameplay is only slightly improved from the first one but still pretty good. It's a flawed gem but definitely worth picking up especially if you liked the first one

The real problem is the bugs, which were still not fixed a couple of years after release. The good news is that KOTR 2 does add some interesting new features, such as stat bonuses from developing relationships with your party members, item crafting, and the ability to train some party members as Jedi (eventually). The story is not as good as the first, but is nonetheless pretty good. Unfortunately the ending is very rushed and becomes both confusing and unsatisfying. It's also a bit slow getting started: the first 'level' or two are fairly dull, but after awhile you get to visit some pretty cool places. KOTR2 is probably well worth playing, but I'd recommend against expecting it to live up to the first game's standard... Expand

As good as the storyline and basic gameplay are, there are more than a few issues that keep this game from reaching the bar set by the first KotOR. The first: bugs. There a lot of them; most are just annoying, but a few are deadly.
  2. It's remarkable that the game's quest is every bit as big and complex as the original's. On the other hand, some unsightly technical issues and a general feeling of déjà vu will probably prevent you from feeling as strongly about The Sith Lords as you did or still do about the first game.

More importantly, all these mechanics -- the moral slider, the influence system, combat, etc. -- are surrounded by a first rate story that's almost as mythic and fantastic as the films themselves.
