I usually don't go into sites like this and rate my favorite game, but after seeing the rating I felt I had to give my opinion: this is simply one of the best RPGs I've played. Amazing interface, plotline, and interactivity. I have not been this impressed by a game in a long time.

Indisputably one of the most elaborate plots in the Star Wars universe and way deeper than any Star Wars movies, The Sith Lords is marred by a rushed ending, most likely due to some odd game publisher (not developer's) policies. As a result, the restored content patch must be download, fixing all of the missing content and finally rendering this game worth playing. In stark contrast to its predecessor, Kotor II is much darker, more mature and filled with ambiguous though more compelling characters, with dialogues which will cast the player into a series of gray-shaded paths which will ultimately shape the fate of a tattered Republic. Most importantly, the ambiguity and sort of Jedi atheism shown by Kreia (the player co-protagonist) will cross the boundaries of ordinary game-platform, displaying the inconsistency of a "beyond good and evil" moral and showing the inevitable consequences of always playing the neutral part. One major flaw may be the outdated graphics; nevertheless, Kotor II represents a landmark in PC Rpg story writing, possibly one of the last of its kind. Expand

This is perhaps the best RPG i've ever played.its superior to its predeccesor in many ways, the only thing that keeps it behind is its abrupt ending, apart from that its a hell of a game, the reason im giving it a 9 is the ending.its definitely recommended to RPG & Star Wars fans. This game truly gives you the sense of being a powerful Jedi. The journey is amazing, though the intro level is a bit long and painful. Once you get into the meat of the game, however, I can't think of another game that is more entertaining for an RPG player. The product was rushed, leaving out a lot of important content, which was the reason for its relatively lower score among critics, but with The Sith Lords: Restored Content Mod, available to all PC users, pretty much the entire game has been restored to what the finished product was supposed to be. There are lots of interactions with your party, and you can make them all better while talking to them, and you can make yourself better the same way. The number of levels you can go up is above 50, although nobody can achieve that in normal gameplay (I got just above 30, I think). There are lots and lots of mods out there which are being produced even now and they make the game much better. As most of you know, the game was released sooner that it should have, so some of the content was not introduced, and some of the bugs were left ingame. I think official and unofficial patches must be installed, to make the game deserve a perfect 10,like: TSL Restored Content Mod, (there is another content for restoration but much smaller, and it adds even more quests), patches (official and unofficial), mods for sabers, sound and ingame menu color (I changed it to blue like the first KOTOR), new, higher resolution videos of important scenes that replace the poor ones that are already in game (it's the same video, just higher res), TSL Save Game Editor, and the rest....I only encountered only ONE bug, on Nar Shadda with Red Eclipse quest, and there is a simple solution to that also. So, great game, a must play for everyone but only with patches and mods, and it's a blast. Expand

Everything has been pretty logically advanced; the combat's been fleshed out and is faster moving and slightly more varied, items are much more customizable and generally prettier, and there's tons of more variety in every aspect of the game. They also made another wise decision no need to muck around with the plebeian classes, been there, done that, we've already seen Jedi powers, give them to us from the beginning. The plot was also made much more complex in order to understand the entire story-line you have to actively fish out bits and pieces from your companions and always try and look out for the big picture. Every important conversation slips you a little of the larger puzzle, and there's no big revelation, oh, no. TSL doesn't baby you, if you don't figure it out yourself you're going to be left half in the dark for the rest of the game. Not only that, it even explains some elements of the first game which weren't quite explained. For sure, TSL is aimed at an older age group than its predecessor. The original Knights of the Old Republic was accessible by all age groups, but left little to the imagination as the plot progressed. TSL requires investigation, and in some cases thought, as the game occasionally deals with thoughts which aren't as simple as the typical quasi-philosophy of the Jedi, and enjoys giving different perspectives on events of the game their fill. After all that, however, The Sith Lords did have some drawbacks. It seemed to be an unfinished product even after doing as much as I could to further every single character's plot-line to their completion, some were still incapable of having their loose-ends tied up. I won't be too hard on the game though, with those aside the game was a huge, massive product, and for how ambitious as it was it's admirable that as much was put together well as was in the game. Despite its few flaws, I would say the game was excellent, and without a doubt superior to its predecessor. Expand

It is easily my favorite game of all time, and one which has deeply impacted my life since the very first time I played it years ago as a tween. Don't let the title deceive you - this is not a Star Wars game. It is set in the Star Wars universe, but this does not follow the formula of Star Wars. There are Sith Lords to be defeated, but also Jedi to either find and rescue... or hunt and destroy. You are not a hero out to save or conquer the galaxy. You are an Exile, broken by war, ejected from the Jedi Order, and only now, returning to the galaxy after being exiled for going to war against the Mandalorians against the Council's wishes. You are not explicitly out to do good or evil - you decide that. You're only looking for answers, and none are to be found. There is no good, no evil, only compassion, which can bring pain, and cruelty, which may bring strength. There is a Light Side, but does it truly better the world? There is a Dark Side, but is it actually evil? These are the questions which hound you, posed by the cryptic and aged Kreia. Each member of the cast, from the most minor of characters to you, yourself, the player, carries and poses a question. Can anyone be redeemed? Should they be given the chance, no matter their wrongs? Which is greater: Loyalty and honor, or being true to oneself and one's own desires? What is the meaning of things such as love and hate? These are examples of such questions I've been asked indirectly and subtly by the cast of KOTOR II, and years later, I still haven't managed to answer even just the ones I've listed. There are SOME Star Wars aspects, naturally - the daring rogue, the journey into the dark cave, the fallen Jedi - but they are all done refreshingly. The rogue merely acts as he does to mask his true self for his own safety... the dark cave makes you confront your own past, present, and potential future... the fallen Jedi fell long ago...
And then there's the mechanical aspect of the game, which is brilliantly done, as well. Light Siders use LS force powers with a point reduction but DS with a point increase, and vice versa, but good planning, building, and gear can almost negate that. Want to play a Light Sider who storms through the field using Force Lightning and Force Choke? Sure. Dark Sider who can heal and buff himself and friends? Absolutely. The only possible issue is that you can't remain a grey character - the morality system requires you to either become Light or Dark. But maxing out either side gives some considerable passive buffs which vary to complement your class build, so it's actually quite forgivable.
As for the miscellaneous aspects of the game, the graphics aren't breathtaking (if that's a dealbreaker for you, maybe you should reconsider your approach - otherwise, I hope you'll forgive it), but the music is absolutely inspiring. It captures the atmosphere so perfectly, no matter what that atmosphere is. The voice acting, too, is done as well as some of the best animated films. As for replay value... through the roof. All my playthroughs over the years of this 50-75 hours of content game and I still feel like I'm not done with it.
Knights of the Old Republic II deserves this rating and every rating above an 8. I would place any kind of career I have as a literary scholar on the claim that this is one of the greatest video games to have ever been produced. I can concede not everybody may agree with that, for rational reasons, but be wary of those who don't, won't, or can't appreciate the depth, meaning, power, and value of this game. Get this game the moment the opportunity presents itself, and if you're playing PC, do yourself a favor and nab the Restored Content Mod which revived the content which remained in the game files but had to be cut due to a cruel release deadline. The Restored Content is across the entire game, but especially in the form of the entire planet M4-78, which has somewhat worse voice-acting, but still stands as a beautiful act of restoration to the game to make it even more whole. You may find the planet's ending somewhat anti-climactic, or you may find it a wonderful twist. Regardless, you'll find this game to be more than worth the money you spent on it - it'll be worth the time and thoughts and existential crises, too.

It begins steeped in thee unknown, with your arrival aboard a badly damaged derelict ship under mysterious circumstances, headed for an abandoned mining facility, you are quickly tasked, much like the games predecessor, to reveal your origins, and unveil the secrets surround your past and peer into the greater scope of the plot itself. Observing the surroundings as you go through the game, learning about the peoples and cultures you find yourself in the midst of, you may very well become overwhelmed by the wealth of characters you encounter, many who may reference a history your unfamiliar with. If you've played the previous title, or read any of the comics, you'll be aided to some extent in your quest for self-discovery with the prior knowledge of events that have had a profound effect on the peoples and environments you come across. (like a planet, ruined by the conflict that takes place in the first game) yet even if you have not, dont let this discourage you. These additions are largely atmospheric and text related, and will not significantly hinder you in your journey. The planets you travel to are well designed, thought out, and written. I found myself so capitivated by the strange and ordinary figures i encountered, that i constantly lost track of what the hell the main objective was i'm supposed to accomplish. More intriguing then that is your own companions. From the cryptically cynical, to comically murderous, no two characters in KOTOR II are alike. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find one that shares any noticeable similarities at all- in Mannerism, ideology, humor, or communication. One of the new features added from the original that adds to the relationship you have with these characters is influence. As the plot progresses you will be challenged at one point or another with one more dilemma after the other. What one praises you for the other might scorn. The higher standing you are with one, the more dialogue options become possible, and the lower, the less. The former, revealing fascinating insights into the supporting lore, their personal thoughts and stories, as well as even their most closely guarded secrets. The voice acting is exceptional, and adds a feeling of immersion that no technological marvels of graphic improvement could achieve. The plot is a dark, engrossing, well crafted and most of all original, drawing its strength from a number of story-telling aspects, from political drama, to a psychological thriller filled with unexpected twists, to its bits of comic relief, and surprisingly deep, philosophic moments of reflection, there's really a little something for everyone that really serves to open up the game to a broader audience. Overall, i can say with confidence, that this has been my favorite game i have had the pleasure of playing to date. I can not recommend it enough, and can truly say, its a wonder unto itself, a one of a kind piece that is the equal or greater of any classical example of literature of film. Its doesnt shine with the unfathomable graphic advances we have come to feel entitled to, and it may have been cut short due at the crunch time of development and thus feel awkwardly unfinished at times, yet once you can get over that, your in for a great time you wont soon forget. Usually we would expect a climatic duel but this is uhhh...dunno what to say...This Is a game that should stay in the lab for a longer period of time, and not russhed out, and what about bastila, and carth?i have games that have no ending.Still i would prefer having to play as REVAN again instead of some 'Excile".Nevertheless, it is a rather interesting game as it inherited a lot from KOTOR.So..i dunno? the choice is your Dark side or light /gg. and May the force be with you... The reason why I love this game so much is because of the story, there's many elements you wouldn't expect in a Star Wars game: like a villain who "eats" people, a Sith Lord who lives on because of his will to fight his own pain... This game is so much deeper than the general game you try, if you give it the time to sink in.

The sad thing... is that the silly publishers, LucasArts, pushed the developers to finish the game at a specific date - forcing content to be cut, mostly the ending.

But there's a group of modders who have restored most of it: http://deadlystream.com/forum/forum/4-tslrcm/

The combat system has been basically reused in its entirety, not that that's a bad thing, and as such contains the same pause and direct action that let you plan your attacks wisely.
Presentation is where KOTOR 2 makes it's biggest downfall, and unfortunately, (in rare cases) can be an absolute deal breaker. During my first play through of the game I reached a point where I could go no further, hindered by incorrect ally NPC spawning. I was forced to start again, as any attempt to load any previous save from that character turned up fruitless.
Musically, it's as good as you'd expect. John William's theme is used less than you might imagine and in it's stead, a brand new orchestrated soundtrack accompanies your battles with foes and explorations into the unknown.
Overall, KOTOR 2 is what fans of the original have been asking for. Some may find that the over abundance of reused assets and gameplay elements invokes a sense of retreading old ground, but speaking a someone who found it hard to fully become immersed in the first game, KOTOR 2 made me feel like the planet hopping bad-ass I always knew I was destined to be. Also i would go as far as to say "i dare you to be good" it takes about 10x more work and side quests to play all light side. Unfortunately, KOTOR II was a classic Obsidian game in that it reached for the stars in many ways but was let down by some irritating technical bugs and a rushed timeline that led to a compressed and clipped ending to the game. There was also a great deal of material cut from the game that really should have been kept but had to be jettisoned to get the game out on a deadline. There have been mods to restore much of that content, however. This one is definitely worth a play through simply to see all of the greatness in it, even if it didn't ultimately quite reach the heights it seemed capable of. Expand

The game is playable without the fan patches but you will be doing yourself a disservice playing the original release.

This is one of the best RPGs in a wide array of areas. The characters have fleshed out backstories and feel very differentiated. The text tree use in this game is among the best ever done in terms of developing the characters you talk to and how it is integrated into the game. There are quite a few times where you can gain information and even traits through talking to crew members. This is one of my favorite parts of the game as simply from a mechanical perspective the idea of your character LITERALLY learning things from speech is represented by the fact that you gain actual stat bonuses etc, from the dialogue. There are speech points in battle(or just before) that also affect the enemy stats, this is very rare and you might not even know that is how the game is working but that is the level of detail put into the speech in this game. The light/dark system is certainly binary but this is the Star Wars universe, there is really no getting around the light/dark representations of the force and this honestly is probably the best game or movie for actually making the dark side seem more alluring to someone that is not literally evil.

The combat is not particularly good, though. You can have some fun seeing the lightsaber for the first time or using a new force skill here or there but it feels fairly weak compared to the rest of the game, but I'd still say its solid for an RPG. Stealth seems pretty much useless other than incredibly rare spots. There can also be some annoying cases of running back and forth for quests, and I swear to god the card game cheats, no one can convince me otherwise.

Overall though, when you look past its flaws you are in for a rare treat. This game ends up being much greater than the sum of its parts, because these types of experiences simply aren't made very often, 10/10.

If you enjoy moral dilemmas and a dark, deep story line that extends the Knights of the Old Republic (and gives more depth to The Old Republic MMO) timeline or simply if you are new to the scene, then I would highly recommend this game, it is a staple for any Star Wars fan. Darth Traya is probably one of the most amazingly written game characters I have ever known.

And if you are into modding, there is a restored content mod that injects parts that were cut out of the game into it. While it is nice to see some new content, it is slightly messy in how they have implemented it, but it does give companions some extra character development. And with the added steam support and resolution fix, there is simply nothing to be putting you off in trying Kotor 2.

Knights of The old republic 2: The Sith Lords isn't as good as the first game, but it's close. There are some improvements enabling you to gain affection with companions, and giving you more customization options. It's also nice to not have a leveling cap. however the game has a weaker story, weaker characters and more bugs then the first game, but still one of the best rpg games out there!

KOTOR 1 (and pretty much every other Star Wars story) is very straightforward and primitive in its morality - the bad guys wear dark clothes and have red lightsabers and are evil; the good guys wear light robes and have colorful lightsabers and are unquestionably good. KOTOR 2, however, goes to great lengths to criticize the Jedi with their code and self-righteousness as much as the Sith with their unchecked hunger for power.

Unlike the first game, pretty much all the party members have an interesting and often dark back story to make conversations with them engaging. Also now you can influence your followers and even train 3 of them to become Jedi.

Anyway, I've just replayed the game for at least the third time, and my opinion still stands - a solid 10/10, if you like old-school RPGs and Star Wars, don't miss it out, they don't make games like these nowadays. Also make sure to install the Restored Content Modification, it fleshes out some dialogue and expands the ending.

On the good side TSLRCM fan-made mod managed to restore many of the cut contents, which lead to a bearable ending, especially for a Light Side player. Be advised: it makes the game very buggy on Onderon, but it's still worth it if you play for the story like I do. If you play the "vanilla" version than it deserves it's 7.8 score. KotOR 2: The Sith Lords has a slower pacing than the first game, and a different, darker and more reflective vibe. It's more rich and detailed, one of the deepest stories set in the Star Wars universe. It explores more gray, morally ambiguous areas, questioning the Force itself and its ways, the position of jedis in the galaxy and the effect of a war on them, the consequences of their actions, and their echoes. To say it plainly if that's not what you are looking for, KotOR2 won't do for you. Otherwise it will make for a fulfilling, if somewhat wearing experience, featuring some of the best NPCs ever seen in a RPG game, many of which will echo strongly the feeling you got from some of the NPCs from the masterpiece Planescape: Torment. A very good overall game. Does not quite live up to the original, BUT the restored content mod fixes a lot of the 'unfinished' content from the main game.
Unfortunately that mod can't fix everything wrong with this game though. The ending seems pretty abrupt, the added in planet is awful and interaction with characters seems to be missing something that the first game had nailed down.

This game is very buggy and completely unfinished. But it's got a great storyline with memorable characters, an interesting plot and plenty of Star Wars goodness. The gameplay is only slightly improved from the first one but still pretty good. It's a flawed gem but definitely worth picking up especially if you liked the first one

Gameplay and Item crafting really fleshed out, the story is phenomenal - I would even go far enough to say that it's story is 10x better than that of the original Knights.

With Knights of the old republic, Bioware raised the the bar considerably for the RPG genre as a whole and especially for its sequel, so my expectations were very high for this one.

When I knew that Obsidian, and not Bioware, was going to make the sequel, I was very skeptical but also excited at the same time. I was actually more eager for this game, at the time it lunched, than the movie Prequels.

And in ended up beeing the first game from Obsidian to suffer its “Obsidian syndrome”, in other words: an overly ambitious, unpolished and unfinished game plagued with bugs which ends up being strangely good for some reason. The people that played Alpha Protocol will understand what i'm trying to say. (Don't get me wrong, KOTOR 2 is a much better game than Alpha Protocol.)
What angers me the most, is the fact that, there is so much wasted potential in this game, the story is so elaborate and mysterious, and the atmosphere is so tense, you'll feel like something major is always about to happen.
The party members in this game are also much more interesting than the ones in Kotor, everyone acts like they have their own secret agenda, even the ones you think you can trust, start doing suspicious things behind your back. And at the same time, you'll be eager to know the fate of everyone from the first game, especially Revan and Bastila.
I wont spoil the story for you but when everything is said and done, the game ends with an aftertaste of plot holes and dead ends.
Knights of the old republic 2 has something special and it could have been one of the best sequels in gaming history, but all was lost when LucasArt putted profits first and fans second. So I'll forgive Obsidian for this one.
In conclusion what could have been an legendary game ended up being just great.

Age hasn't been too kind to it, the graphics aren't the best and it's buggy at best on newer OS, but that doesn't stop it from being a true legendary classic. And look at that, a decade later and it gets updated to fix most problems and allow for us to return to KotOR II a few more times. Just because it got this big update don't think it's bug free, there's still plenty of them. For me I get achievements in weird locations for no reason - I got the Dancing Queen achievement when I left Peragus and didn't get the Peragus achievement until I got a little further into Telos. Not to mention the money achievement I randomly got when I made a small barter - but that's okay. There's no real game breaking bugs or anything and it's stable. It's a very good game and is usually set at a low price. If you love Star Wars or RPGs on a whole this is a must have along with KotOR I. I recommend starting with KotOR I first then moving on to two as you'll probably get pretty confused. The combat system is similar to an MMO, usually I'm not a fan of this combat system in single-player games but it actually works pretty good. Granted it could be better, but for a 2005 game there's nothing wrong with it. Expand

    Pro
    - Great gameplay. With some minor improvement like easy change of melee and ranged even tough i mainly used melee on my MC , also the add off different forces/styles.
    - Great soundtrack music
    - Darker in setting or tone the kotor 1. Witch also makes for a darker plot. ( But i probably prefer the original due to a little be pacing ,but is entirely objective/subjective or whatever the say
    - Overall better and more interesting characters imo and villain .
    - Again a great rpg with a lot of choices yu can make , however the ending you get seems to be dependant on your choice in the end fo the game.
-You can play it at you own , pace it starts out linear, but eventually you get 4 planets you can choose to explore and take on in what order you want ,also able to go back an forth.
    - Just hard enough , even tough the bosses is pretty hard.
    - Replay value.

Cons: However there is some cons here compared to the original, i had problem with the mouse freezing right after cutescens so be sure to save regularly. But it seems too vary very much on people and there probably some fixes for it out there. Also looting from container and especially on npc sometimes i had to loot from a specific angel.
    - one of the places you visits feel to drag on a little and so does the last location your at.

Also i recommend you to use the restoration content mod
Great game a little bit worse then the original due to it cons how ever if it was for cons it would be very tight. It would basically be plot vs characters an tone/setting of the game a darker star wars or not as dark.

Put these things aside and you will still find the game to be amazingly good fun. This and it's prequel are two of the best Star Wars games ever made. A real shame that we don't get to see more of this kind of genius these days.

KOTOR 2 is a good game that expands on KOTOR 1, but it has tons of major flaws.

There are some parts of the game that are simply impossible to beat without meta gaming, cheating, or using some kind of exploit. This happens because almost all of the party members are support characters. They have little or no combat ability, but there are multiple parts of the game where those support characters need to solo extremely difficult enemies. For example, there is a part where Atton needs to fight against 2 assassins at the same time. This fight is absolutely impossible to do without cheating because Atton's fighting skills are comparable to a midget with a spinal injury. He can't hit anything, his damage is pathetic because all of his points are in dexterity instead of strength (he's a rogue), but those assassins can take half his life in a matter of seconds. How does one beat that encounter? Run behind a certain piece of furniture so the assassins can't reach you and then shoot them. Honest to god, this requires about 1 or 2 minutes of shooting. I went to the bathroom while Atton was shooting them, and they were still alive by the time I came back. They are that difficult to hit, and they have that much life, so there's absolutely no chance of beating them when using mines, grenades, or melee.

A bit later on, a similar encounter happens with Mira trying to escape a certain situation. Mira, like Atton, is a rogue. She has no strength, she does very little damage, her armor class is pathetic, and she doesn't have much life. The problem is that she's forced to fight against a wookie that steamrolls her quite easily. The environment only has a few mines laying around to use in this fight, but it requires about 20 mines to kill the wookie. I used all of the environmental mines plus all 11 mines in my inventory, and the wookie was still alive. After winning that fight, she needs to kill about a dozen very powerful enemies that have double swords. She can't even solo 1 of them without using a med kit or a mandalorian shield, but they attack in pairs. Mines are out of the question because each enemy requires about 3 frag mines to kill. Mira's auto character leveling puts 0 points into stealth, so there's no way to sneak out of that part. There's just no way anyone could beat this without knowing exactly what came next in the game. If you typically sell or deconstruct mines for parts, there's no way to win. If you didn't manually select stealth specialization for her, there's no way to win. It's just horrendous game design.

My own character does quite well in this game because my character was built from the ground up to be a melee fighter with health regeneration and a very high armor class. I'm a veteran of Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2 which use the same D&D rules as KOTOR, so I'm familiar with how severely handicapped every other type of character is. Unfortunately, all the companions are handicapped. They work great as support characters because they can pick locks and use computers, but they are totally useless in combat, and the game seems to think it's a good idea to pit a rogue against a fighter and then laugh when the rogue dies every single time. My character's armor class is 34, but Mira's armor class at the same point in the game is 20. Is there any mystery why she gets destroyed so easily? I can't put any good armor on Mira because that armor is worn by the characters I actually use, and I can't switch armor at this point in the game. The only way to give proper gear to Mira is to load a save game from about 3 hours ago.

To get through these stupid parts of the game, one can download the KOTOR save game editor and buff Mira's stats. Set all of her attributes to 30 until the solo part ends and then dial them back down so she resumes her role as a person who hacks computers and dies in every fight.

As good as the storyline and basic gameplay are, there are more than a few issues that keep this game from reaching the bar set by the first KotOR. The first: bugs. There a lot of them; most are just annoying, but a few are deadly.
  2. It's remarkable that the game's quest is every bit as big and complex as the original's. On the other hand, some unsightly technical issues and a general feeling of déjà vu will probably prevent you from feeling as strongly about The Sith Lords as you did or still do about the first game.

More importantly, all these mechanics -- the moral slider, the influence system, combat, etc. -- are surrounded by a first rate story that's almost as mythic and fantastic as the films themselves.
