If you take this for what it is - that is to say, a text-driven adventure with next to no voiceover work, built primarily to make fans of Voyager blush with fannish glee - you’ll enjoy it plenty. Don’t let the license fool you into thinking this is big-budget stuff - it’s very indie, and delightfully-designed likely because of that. I can forgive a bit of clunkiness in the presence of an abundance of heart - and Beyond the Unknown has that in spades.

The title of the best Star Trek game in years still ultimately belongs to a merely solid narrative-driven experience, one that alternates between engaging and exhausting scavenging across the Delta Quadrant. Across the Unknown is a sincere and ambitious project, but one frequently held back by its limited budget and draining mechanics.

If you like Star Trek, it's hard not to recommend this to you. It's a sharp game with issues that can often be attributed to the title's budget. It can become somewhat repetitive because the strategy aspect doesn't really offer much variety in its setup. What you do in the first solar system, you do - with few exceptions - in the later star systems as well. Despite this, I still think it's a competent product and perhaps one of the best games in the Star Trek universe I've had the pleasure of testing.
