    Space Adventure Cobra - The Awakening takes a mostly forgotten fictional universe and builds a good game around it. The narrative is directly drawn from the anime based on the manga, while the mechanics competently use the action platformer template. The Psychogun’s guided attack is a unique mechanic that makes combat, especially boss engagements, more exciting. Play cooperatively, if possible, and don’t skip the cutscenes, even if they seem cheesy. The protagonist’s relatively imprecise movement could lead some players to quit playing, but Space Adventure Cobra - The Awakening compensates with retro charm and a cool hand cannon that can stop time.

    It's hard to know who Space Adventure Cobra: The Awakening is aimed at. The action/platformer pro will find it average in 2025, while the hardcore Cobra fan will regret the general lack of ambition in telling the story they love so much. The neophyte, on the other hand, might resent having the first 12 episodes of the very good anime spoiled for them with a game of this caliber. Nevertheless, the game is not without its qualities, and even if there were surely plenty of ways to do better, it is not a fool's trap designed by the Glass Man to trap legendary heroes. Like other productions from the publisher, it's nice, it draws inspiration from many things that work elsewhere, but the result struggles to bring anything truly transcendent.

    Space Adventure Cobra – The Awakening nails the look and swagger of Buichi Terasawa’s cult classic with slick anime cutscenes and a faithful retelling of the early series. Unfortunately, once control is handed over, clunky movement and overreliance on the Psychogun drag the adventure down.

    Space Adventure Cobra - The Awakening is a 2D action platformer and an adaptation of the classic series Cobra. The game excels at adapting the anime, all the cutscenes are beautiful and the music is superb too. Sadly that doesn't transfer over to the gameplay and you end up with a basic platformer. It's still an okay time, but one that made me want to check out the source material over going back to the game.

    As a homage to a classic cult anime series, Space Adventure Cobra: The Awakening sort of works. The animation has the right feel, and fans of the show and those nostalgic about it will absolutely have a blast with that part. Unfortunately, the gameplay completely disregards that nostalgia this title relies on to appeal to its audience. It doesn't help that the level design is at times a massive disaster. While impressive, the boss fights, anime cutscenes, and campy '80s feel do not save this.
