Though repetitive and a bit slow at times, I am enamoured by Tequila Works’ Song of Nunu and their capability to bring so much love and passion to an otherwise overlooked — and often underrated — champion from its source.

A strong contender for champion of League of Legends spinoffs, Song of Nunu is fairly lightweight but presents a charming, beautiful 3D platforming adventure for franchise veterans and newcomers alike.

Coming from the ranks of Dota 2, Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story caught me off guard. It’s almost unfair how this League of Legends adventure manages to weave such an enthralling narrative, making me, a Dota fan, momentarily question my loyalties. It stands as a shining example in the League of Legends universe, offering a heartwarming tale that resonates with both fans and newcomers alike. The game’s strengths lie in its compelling narrative, beautifully crafted world, and thoughtful sound design, all of which come together to create an immersive and emotionally impactful experience. While Song of Nunu may not pioneer new gameplay mechanics or offer extensive replay value, it triumphs in delivering a narrative that is both engaging and meaningful. More than just a game, it is a fun-sized odyssey that resonates deeply, leaving a lasting impression on the heart and spirit.

Regardless of how many hours you’ve sunk into League of Legends over the years, whether it be hundreds, thousands, or perhaps even none at all, Song of Nunu: A League Legends Story is a game worthy of your attention. It’s a roughly eight to twelve hour adventure with an abundance of heart, with a charming duo you’ll quickly fall in love with. The platforming may occasionally frustrate with its stiff and sometimes unreliable nature, but the engaging atmosphere and pleasing visuals of the Freljord and the gameplay that constantly shifts between exploration, puzzle solving and combat are sure to keep you entertained until credits roll.

Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story is another successful Riot Forge project that expands the reach of Runeterra beyond the confines of the wildly successful MOBA. A rough opening chapter segues into an impeccably paced experience that's short, sweet, wholesome, and all too easy to play.

Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story is a heartwarming and accessible adventure puzzler that I recommend on Steam Deck over Nintendo Switch if you have the option. I’m glad to see Riot Forge changing up genres like this as well, and while this release feels more suited to a younger audience, it is a great game that has been a joy to experience on Steam Deck over the last week.

Fans of the world of Runeterra, and therefore of League of Legends, should absolutely check out Song of Nunu. It’s a fun way to explore some of the most prominent characters in the universe, as well as a popular area: the Freljord. And for those who aren’t as familiar with the setting, Song of Nunu is still an entertaining and heartwarming experience worth your time.

Song of Nunu is a must-have for all League of Legends fans. It adds even more substance to the now canonical LoL universe, and it's a delight to discover the story of Nunu and Willump, but that's not all... Many surprises await you too. For neophytes, the game is the perfect gateway to the universe. Very accessible, perhaps even too much so to the point of forgetting the challenge, Song of Nunu is a truly colorful tale. Freljord, the region depicted here, is magnificent. The art direction is superb, and the work Tequila Works has done to give life and soul to our heroes is remarkable. We become attached to the duo and their story. It's a pity that the gameplay is a little clumsy and imprecise. The staging and environments largely save the day, but the platforming phases are not very exciting. All in all, a fresh and highly enjoyable experience, a very good vintage.

Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story is an excellent candidate for your holiday gift list, if not a candidate for something to play this holiday season. It excels in crafting an emotional tale that hits all the right notes of childishness and the wonders of childhood while also encouraging players forward. It’s not the deepest game, but it is a masterclass in storytelling and worldbuilding. Don’t worry if you’re unfamiliar with any of Riot’s previous games – your yeti pal, Willump, will give you a gigantic hug either way.
