I didn't expect much from this game but it turned out that it's one of the best games I've ever played. Wonderful atmosphere, amazing story. I'm 34 years old guy and I literally had a teardrop in my eye on the ending. It speaks for itself. No other game had such an effect on me.

This is one of the most fantastic games ever made. People who are criticising this game because it "isn't scary" and other petty issues are completely missing the point and obviously lack the depth of mind to understand why this game is a masterpiece.

It's one of the most haunting pieces of entertainment I've ever consumed, anyone who is able to appreciate something for more than it is on the surface should definitely play this game at least once, in fact I implore you...

That's not to say this is one of those games where you have to be "special" to appreciate it (those types of games irk me more often than not too) - it's more that you should ignore the few people who were unable to see this game and its themes for what they are and absorb them.

Like I said, utterly brilliant and something that should be experienced by everyone. I won't go into any spoilers (even vague ones) even though it's not some twist or something else so cheap that makes this game what it is, it's the experience of playing through it - the game is even more amazing once you finish it and take the time to reflect on the scenarios and existential questions it puts to the player.

Finally, please discount any review that contains the word "boring" - this game isn't for those people and never was.

One of my top 5 games of all time.

Just to add tech wise everything is good too - controls well, interaction with the world is simple but effective (+ the usual physics stuff) holds 30fps on PS4 (my 1st time) and will hold 60fps on a modest graphics card at max on PC (my 2nd time - yes I bought twice). Looks fantastic too, that is if you can appreciate good art design over simple tech prowess (although in my opinion it's no slouch there either)

This is a rare game for me, in which i found every aspect to be perfect. The world looks awesome, very believable and makes you feel you really are there, in that world. Story-telling and story are on point. Enemies are the exact amount of difficult, balanced with everything else. Just 5 star experience.

The true existential horror is in the story, not the monsters. In fact, I'd call it one of the best video game stories of all time, right up there with the likes of Metal Gear Solid, Deus Ex, Silent Hill 2 and Bioshock. This game gets a 10 just for that.

Please remember a score of 10/10 doesn't mean perfection in my book. SOMA has some glaring issues, most of which has to do with the jumpscare tactics and loud noises the game likes to throw at you. There are also some issues with the main character and how stupid he is not understanding what's really going on when it has been obvious for the observant player for quite some time.

But these issues are just me nagging. They are minor, and I honestly shouldn't even have spent the keystrokes it took to type them out when I could have gushing about story. But I don't want to spoil you. Go out there and experience the game for yourself. It's absolutely worth it, and while the story would work out well in a book or movie, the video game medium actually strengthens the delivery of that story, as you yourself have to walk around, pick up the pieces, and try to tie everything up.

this game is a thoughtful, psychological horror/ sci-fi masterpiece. If you like deep storytelling, and heavy atmosphere then this game is made for you. The scariest thing about this game that it will make you think about life and death, and not in the happy way. there're far worse fates than just dying, it's not an easy game to just digest.

It's a fantastic game. The story seems familiar if you are into si-fi, but authors "tell" it in a very immersive and emotional way using really good visuals and sound.

This is such an amazing game. This game played with my mind and feelings like very few other games did, and there is no other game that uses the concepts of loneliness and conscience like SOMA does. I agree it has a few weaknesses like the combat but it's just a tiny downside of an incredible game.

This game is 4x better than I expected. For $30 the graphics are just gorgeous. I'm a huge fan of the Amnesia series, but like an honest fan, I can admit A Machine for Pigs was... pretty stupid... Had the enemies been something else besides pigs the game might have been perfect, but SOMA is a solid accomplishment for Fritctional Games. At first I hated the setting because it just seemed like a microwaved Bioshock clone, but this game is much more than that. In terms of presentation, it definitely sells the idea of being underwater immeasurably more than Bioshock. I demand a little more from my games than the average player in terms of story because I remember the good old days when Ken Levin was creating "Thief" and "System Shock 2," and even though SOMA and those games are completely different animals, on the level of depth and effort put into them, they're equal. SOMA is a slow burn, something you have to let yourself enjoy until you find yourself thinking about it's eerie atmosphere when you're playing something totally unrelated. It has this seriously frightening "Leviathan 1989" feel to it, in the best possible way. There was something charming about that B movie, and SOMA just takes that and runs with it. There's no telling what kind of freak you're listening to when you hear its ghastly gurgling and grunting in the darkness. It could be anything. The monster designs are superb, especially for a $30 game. There is no doubt about that. The only drawback is the extremely slow pace and... Mr. Wan's impossibly complex simulation mission... which is soul sucking... but other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, definitely way more than I thought I would. My first impression was "Meh," but now it's a favorite; that's a good game. Only titles like the aforementioned "Thief the Dark Project," or "System Shock 2," or the outrageously good "Amnesia the Dark Descent" can stay with you like that. Expand

This is perfect. On every level. THe philosophy questions it raises are just amazing. The gameplay combined with atmosphere is also great. I didn't like the monster parts of the game, because they kept interferring with my bits and pieces of story that I tried to collect. Still, an amazing 100% game.

And those are things the player will almost certainly carry with them for the rest of their life.

SOMA helped me finish (for now) solidifying my understanding of those issues. I actually did quite well, I'd say, in figuring things out for myself beforehand. No philosophy textbooks needed. I would actually recommend SOMA as a very well-put-together presentation of those issues.

Nowadays, devs like Chinese Room like to use fractionalized story telling which is really confusing and sometimes makes no sense, instead, SOMA's story telling is like a constant reward during progression to let you step by step know more useful about what is actually happening (You get meaning why you play the game over time!).

No f**king jump scare. SOMA immerses you only with atmosphere and implied visional/sound effect which are not utterly scary, but keep in at a certain stress level which is just enough for me. (Only the shattered screen is extremely horrible, horrible but still it doesn't damage neuron like f**king jump scare as you can prepare to choose not to look at it).

Hum, I would say it is a walk-simulator, but SOMA is just that good to experience, because its story is really worth it.

    Some problems:
I've crashed 3times, please fix the issue ASAP.
I have to quit to main menu after manual save?
Some of the textures are out-of-date.

Overall, SOMA is a carefully crafted interactive sci-fic thriller with nice story, paving and just on spot stress to squeeze your adrenaline in a health way while making you think a bit deeper how our world actually works.

Plus, some of the most interesting things are the Kill/Not Kill choices you made (They are subtle. You will know when you play). Unknow how they have effect on the end. Let us see. I feel the choices are to test your morality, but either way has reasonable excuse to choose. A real dilemma.

I even consider this to have a better story than Bioshock 1 and 2, and I find it on par with Bioshock Infinite, as well as Portal 2. SOMA is a excellent game with a really a masterpiece from FG. I will go over what i found really good and what i find less good.

To start out with the obvious: Graphics and Engine:

SOMA is using the their all-new engine HPL 3 which add all new features (which i havent seen nor tried to figure out, too into the game to do anything with the editor atm). If you guys have ever tried Amnesia(If not, i can recommend it :)you know that a lot of the rooms were really generic and, tbh, not very detailed, with some exceptions. In SOMA you find different rooms, super detailed, great lightning and just sharp textures. While this is not like the new AAA games out there, it is defiently a good addition to the game. Every room is filled with cables, Structure gel stuff, advanced robotics and i could continue. Every room is unique, which is nice.

    Story:
While I'm really bad at giving summaries and writing a story short and understandable, I'll just make it as good as I can. You are playing as the protagonist Simon, or should I say, the Protagonists(plural)Simon. The game starts with you in a dream, dreaming about the day you was in a car crash, and a friend of yours die, and you end up with brain damage. You then agree to do a Brain scan. Suddenly you are in the future, scared and confused at the events that has just occured to you. You end up finding that the scan you did, was later put into another body, and weird **** happens(as well as scary) Don't wont to spoil to much, so ill stop here. Excellent overall, and I'll come close to this as well.

    New features:

There is a lot of new features in SOMA: Voice Acting, Choices and all new interactions. The best of all is the voice acting. It is in the top, really, just amazing. Not that we didn't have this in Amnesia, but you remember that it was only briefly when you were looking back in time, memories, that the voice acting was there. Here you are talking, in the present, with other beings. This really adds to the atmosphere, and you even have the choice to keep talking to learn more of the events thats happening. The choices is a close runner-up to the Voice Acting. The decisions are really REALLY hard. I can say one: Before you is a man called Carl, which is plugged to power source neaby. To get to the next area, you can either risk your own life, by turning off some power, which will let the monster in, or turn the switch in Carls room to bypass the monster, but (pretty sure it probably)kill Carl. Obvious is to go to the power room, but to get to the power room, you have to know that there IS a power room. A friend of mine missed the Power room, though that killing Carl was the only way.. Seriously, kill a Dude instead of trying to find another way? Well, you get the point i hope.

Now to what i find less good:

In Amnesia the monsters were really scary, but easy to trick. I tried to stay alive by hiding behind a picture.. Really monster? In SOMA some only react if you move or look at them. Even when the atmosphere is so scary, it really kills it that you can flash and look at the monster, without it really doing anything. People will probably miss the fact that this is a thing (Ermm.. ChristopherOdd E.g.) But this is not that much that I don't think it is scary. The game is worth a big pile of structure gel for FG's.

All in all, this game is just amazing, and if you haven't bought it by now.. Who knows, maybe the other you did? Let's hope so.

    Oli is Out for now,
    Thanks for reading

Soma is properly the best narrative game i have experienced for about 2 years(since i first played Bastion). It builds up a world, that is very well made and without that many plot holes. Its two characters, Simon and Cathrine, are superb characters and while Simon, the main character, can be hard to understand sometimes, by the end, you are going to feel empathy for the guy.

What really sells the game, and what makes it an awesome game, is the story. The choices that you make throughout the game, makes you question your own way of thinking and you might even have to pause the game to give you extra time to think. The choices that you make, might not have too much impact ingame, but because the game makes these choices either hard or terrifying, you are personally gonna remember them until the end of the game.

Soma is a great game, no doubt about, but if you are looking for a great horror game, this is not it. The horror aspect is lowered down from amnesia, but narrative experience is turned up to 11. I give this game 10/10 because it is a game, that i felt was easy to play yet it challenged me emotionally and intellectual and 3 days after i finished the game, its theme of life and death, still roams in my head.

    Well done Soma... Well done.

Easily the best story in any game I've ever played, Just the moral choices and ideas on life itself make this game amazing. The voice acting, graphics and sound/music were superb and despite not being as scary as the first Amnesia, this game didn't need to be.

Calling SOMA merely a horror game and comparing it to those who utilize one's defensive reflexes to tediously scare them, would be indignity to this masterpiece that is merely meters away from defining a genre.

In SOMA, you need to find your way through an underwater observatory named PATHOS-II, with intriguing characters, terrifying beasts and enthralling environments scattered around the journey.

Monsters, creatures that spur as a mixture of our definition of a predator and an abomination are not the main devices used to scare the player in SOMA. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

In SOMA, the idea of a monster is what terrifies the player. The fact that it could be right around the corner you're staring at, or that it could hear you placing that fuse and lash out at you any second.

In SOMA, it is not a random generator that dictates whether your fate leads to victory or the belly pit of an agitated monster; it's entirely and only your actions. As the player, you need to overcome the terror induced by the agonizing screams coming from the beast next door to think, grab and complete your objective.

Besides the frightening mechanics, SOMA does an incredible job of having the player feel like they are actually roaming an ocean floor sprinkled with aging yet top-of-the-line technological material. It does an excellent job of having the player feel free to (anxiously) go anywhere even if their path is a dedicated linear passage.

Overall, SOMA is an ambitious yet brilliant game that both terrifies you through original and fun mechanics while exploring an extremely controversial subject regarding the human soul.

Edit: Outlast'ten katlarca iyiydi her açıdan.

SOMA, however, kept me intrigued from start to finish. In fact, the narrative is so powerful you could write a thesis on it (that's all I'll say here). There was never a moment I wanted to stop playing -- I always had to force myself. That said, if you go into the game thinking it won't be as scary as Amnesia, you'll be in for a bad time. I'd say it's a bit more upsetting than Amnesia since it not only throws horrific fleshy monsters at you, but it also messes with your head with existential philosophies and surreal situations.

Everything has been said, but it's important to point out that this is *not* a shooter/stealth game; it'is an exploration game. It's also not scary; it's unsettling. It's important to know those two things before approaching the game, otherwise some players may expect something different (ie. Amnesia, which is an entirely different game!).

I think this is the best story in video gaming BECAUSE it can only be experiences as a video game. While gameplay is lacking, the enemies are visually and audibly excellent. The environment feels harsh and uninviting while having a subtle beauty due to its unique scientific location. It was a blast to walk on the deep ocean floor. The story is excellent and a true horror classic.

SOMA has a nice litte story it tells. And the trick is the gameplay and narrative who do not hurt each other and are implemented perfectly. Immersion is the key for me and for me immersion means interactivity instead of spectating which means: no cutscenes, no handholding, not overly scripted, or simply: do not take away control from me, do not force me into spectator position ever. And SOMA respects and understands that perfectly. Also it tells its story primarily through gameplay. Here and there you can read, hear or conversate. But it is not cinematic like most modern games nor reading-heavy like Bioshock and still manages to tell us its story.

For me it feels like a mix of underwater Half-Life just without shooting and therefore more thrill and philosophy.

The art design is nice (looks a bit like Bioshock without the kitsch), the atmosphere is just great, the sounds are nice. Must play!

SOMA understands that gameplay and interactivity is the best way to tell a story! It understands that the player him-/herself tells the story as well. SOMA understands how to lead the player into the right direction without using cutscenes/scriptsequences. Subtle and immersive!

Top tier story telling in any game, with deep discussion of consciousness and what it means to be human. Although there are many sci-fi stories out there on similar topics, the game design is still able to exceed expectation in many moments throughout the game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game itself deserves a 9/10, but the fact that this game is just so criminally underrated is why I'd give it a 10/10. The horror element compared to other Frictional games like, Penumbra: Black Plague and Amnesia: The Dark Descent, it's no where near as scary as those games, especially not Alien: Isolation. But the design of the characters and setting is what really sets this game apart from any other horror game. The game gets progressively more and more insane as you progress through it, and the variety of monsters to match with the environment that you are in is done so well. Even though it isn't the scariest, there isn't anything that they necessarily did wrong. The horror in this game focuses on psychological horror that will stick with you even after you finished the game. Encounters with the monsters always feel tense, even though it never really feels like there is any consequences to getting caught, and in general is really easy to get past. But, ever building you enters, and every task you do gives that sense of dread that there's something there. The other element of psychological horror to this game is the story. The story is the absolute best part of this game, there's a reason why this game comes with a mode that makes the enemies harmless. Every decision you make it this game has no impact on the outcome of the story, but every decision you make has an impact on you as a person. Is it morally right to end the life of something that perceives itself as something that it's not, and let it live eternity in a nightmare? It's hard to explain, but the things that this game makes you do still 3 years after finishing this game still haunts me to this day. The part that really haunts me is transferring your consciousness from one being to another, and you have a 50/50 shot of continuing on to that other being. So, either you get to move on to the other being with your consciousness while another one of you stays behind, or you stay behind while another one of you goes on in that other being. It that begs the question, do you let your other self live and wake up to the nightmare you woke up to originally, or kill them but never let them see what you had to see. Like I said, bad explanation, but when you play it you'll understand why it haunts so many people. Expand

Honest and quick review: If you love sci-fi and horror mixed with mystery/mind-bending stories then this is the one for you. Visuals do not get boring at all as the game moves you through different environments at a great pace each with their own unique threats, atmospheres and puzzles. This may be a bold statement to make but I 100% stand by it; SOMA is the poster child for games that tell incredible, thought provoking stories. If you haven't played this yet, put every other game on hold and buy this game. Expand

Definitely one of the most epic horror games of all. This game is one great example of the story-based, thematic horror genre. Cant wait for the next SOMA game.

Just one word: "masterpiece". It has one of the best and most compelling stories that ive ever play/watch/read in my life. Pure sci-fi, very emotional. And if you add the moral dilemmas and the moments of really good horror... well, there it is: a masterpiece.

The most atmospheric game I have ever been playing. After finishing the game I was sitting for 10 minutes and thinking about life and death, about morality, about humanity. Great story and good gameplay. As for me, this game is better than most AAA titles.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mind bending and horrific in many ways.

    The Good:
    - Monsters have unique movements. Some use noises, some teleport, some randomly move very fast, some you can't look at, etc.
    - Game uses glitchy screen to warn you a monster is close by. Very tense feeling.
    - I found myself going out of my way to look for info to learn more about the story and characters
    - Very engaging plot
    - Realizing you're inside a robot by looking in the mirror
    - Having two copies of your mind when you duplicate is a scary thought
    - Tricking others inside a simulation to give you info was interesting
    - Don't know if I should have been trusting Catherine or not throughout the journey. Made things mysterious.
    - Having structure gel taking over life forms is horrific
    - The atmosphere was incredibly scary
    - The sounds and ambient music was very well done
    - Static words popping up on screen randomly freaked me out
    - The game giving you the choice of euthanasia was challenged your philosophical thoughts

    The Bad:
    - The main character could have sounded more urgent at times. Like in the beginning, he had very little reaction to his girlfriend passing away in the car crash. He also had little reaction to waking up in a dark run down facility, straight from his doctor's office.
    - There was a couple times when I was trapped with a monster in a dead end, and the monster simply won't leave, forcing me to have to take damage or reset to escape.

Everyone reacts to this in their own way, but when you see how people take gaming moments to heart, you understand how important this product is for art. There are a couple of points that deserve criticism: the impact of decisions on future events (which is practically non-existent) and some incorrect in-game moments due to which you get stuck in one place for no particular reason. So, this is a slightly overrated subjective appreciation from me, a lover of plot and emotional moments. SOMA has forever left a mark on my memory. Expand

Oyunu steam üzerinden satın almıştım. Oyunun atmosferi aşırı gerici hikayesi ve bossları aşırı tüyler ürpertici oyun içi diyaloglar oyunun hikayesinin %70 ini veriyor geri kalan kısmı öğrenmek için baya bi etraftaki itemlere dikkat etmeniz gerek oyunun final bölümünü anlamak baya uzun sürüyor

SOMA is not the horror game I expected out of Frictional, but I don’t care and it doesn’t matter. This is an excellent work of science fiction, not necessarily unique but uniquely told through its skillful use of video game conceits. It’s System Shock 2 for a modern sensibility, BioShock freed of its AAA chains. It’s damn good and, for my money, the most cohesive and ambitious game Frictional’s made so far.

I parted with Soma with the same feeling that came over me while I was watching “Matrix”, “Interstellar” or “Inception”. Once again someone came up with something no one thought of before and took me for an amazing ride into the unknown. [12/2015, p.40]
