The first work of Spiral Circus Games does not last long but succeeds in offering an enveloping journey.

Overall Silt is a beautiful experience, very curated from an artistic point of view and able to fascinate for most of its duration.

Because of everything that is spectacular about Silt – its stunning art style, atmospheric environments, and pensive story – I wanted to love this game. It just wouldn’t let me. Exasperating puzzles with little guidance frequently slowed my progress to a halt and left me banging my head against a wall. Even so, I still encourage players to pick up the title, if for no other reason than to experience so gorgeous a game.

Silt is not groundbreaking, but you won’t regret spending 3-5 hours on this stunningly beautiful, somewhat oneiric puzzle platformer, especially if you enjoyed Limbo and David Lynch movies.

SILT successfully conjures a dark and unnerving underwater atmosphere, and fans of similar titles should be satisfied - though it's a case of style over substance, as the gameplay largely falls flat.

Puzzles using divers, deep-sea and possession succeed to increase immersion in early game. The atmospheric monochrome graphic and heart-warming soundtracks are also unforgettable. However, the puzzles are a bit too much simple and repetitive, as well as the narrative seems to fail keeping the tension till the end.

Perhaps there’s some sort of allegorical tale that evaded my attention. There are hints at some deeper mysteries in the progress through different environments, the area you return to between levels, and the recurring motifs, the various symbols that greet your successes. But if Silt has anything to say beyond ‘You might dig this moody atmosphere’ then it was lost on me. Some of its scenes, however, will stay with me for a long time to come.

SILT delivers a very captivating artistic design, recreating atmospheres so gloomy that generate a strong feeling of melancholy in the player. Unfortunately the limited gameplay and some uncertainties limit the final result.

  1. Silt is a fairly short game, though, and playing it over a few days meant I usually figured out a puzzle the next time I came back to it. I'm just not entirely sure that coming back to Silt is the ideal state of affairs. Really the question is: are the vibes good enough to make up for the want of a nicer checkpoint system? I'm not sure they are, both because of Silt's comparative brevity and because it's not as if it's Dark Souls, here. The stopping and starting and reloading felt a bit at odds with the dreamy and/or nightmarish floating in any case. On the other hand, the addition of more checkpoints would proabably be all it needs, so your mileage, especially under water, may vary.

I've played this game on both PC and Switch. I love it a lot. The art speaks to me. The puzzles are fun and not too challenging.
