Really superstitious and/or ADD-afflicted types might want to steer clear for their own special reasons. Everybody else with a reasonably high-end gaming rig, the residents of Silent Hill welcome you.
  2. But raising the levels of difficulty for both will not only make the game hard to play, as the rewards you can gain make up for that. Finishing the game on various levels of difficulty again, you can obtain various bonus weapons and even a bonus ending.
  3. It's the well-directed story and its stunning conclusion that provides the much-needed payoff and motivation to finish the game. With a slew of secrets designed to encourage repeat visits, SH3 may not be "fun," but it certainly is compelling.
  4. The overall combination of simple search and find puzzles, great and horribly disturbing story and some of the most disgusting and scary monsters ever imagined just works yet a third time.

It's all atmosphere and, particularly when you're talking about horror, that's often enough. [Mar 2004, p.66]
  6. The story is slow at first, but patient players will find it ultimately becomes one of the game's stronger features, along with its atmospheric visuals.
  7. Silent Hill 3 isn't so much about gameplay as it is about creating a disturbing world and immersing you in it, which is something it does very well.

Scary fun, but some control issues and uneven puzzles make it less fun than its predecessors.
  9. Need I remind you that Silent Hill 2 failed to deliver a truly lasting horror experience on the PC. To our disappointment Silent Hill 3 doesn't expand on that aspect any further.
  10. For many, this general creepiness of visuals and sounds, coupled with fear of the unknown, will be sufficient. For this gamer, more is needed, leading to my mixed rating ("maybe yes, maybe no").

Shockingly un-shocking, it's too much mood and little "boo." [Mar 2004, p.73]

You'll frequently dodge the oafish enemies instead of fighting. [Mar 2004, p.84]

After an hour with struggling with clunky, awkward kb and mouse controls I did what I did with the first two, DELETED the game. What the hell is with Konami? This game was released in 2004. I don't need or want the aggravation of a half assed pc port. Was the game scary, frightening, mind numbingly terrifying, like other reviewers want you to believe, the answer is: I have no idea. I was too pissed off trying to move around in the game. Full Review »

Maybe theThe awful writing of SH2 somehow added to the uncanny nature of everything the game presents. Making it feel that bit more eerie. Maybe the developer's were lucky with this. In SH3, the overly ambitious plot, which centres more on some uninspired cult scenario rather than simply the psychology of its main characters, highlights the writing, characters, and everything else, as just being incredibly silly. It also never takes time to build up tension. It drops you in the heat of the "action" immediately. It misses that important "uncanny" mark by a fair amount. This means all your left with is the terrible combat. There are some interesting puzzles and you can finish the game very quickly, but SH3 has nothing worth going back to. Its just really, really bad. Full Review »
