Great multi-faceted storyline with equal or more "weight" than most other RPGs and simple overall gameplay that is nonetheless nuanced enough to always be fresh, entertaining, and strategically-challenging as you level up your character and plan for each next battle.

Somewhat rough around the edges, though: Combat can be merciless (depending on your difficulty setting personally I played the given campaign on the highest difficulty) if you don't pay attention to the flow of each battle and it can drag on a bit at times as well, especially if you die; dying will piss you off due to the auto-save mechanic that uses zone saves rather than saving dynamically between encounters. However, even though I played in the maximum difficulty, I didn't die often, since dying is frustrating enough that it forces you to think about what you're doing during combat (which works for most situations, unless you get exceptionally unlucky during a tough fight or forget to stock up on plenty of healing and rezzes or invest in healer before heading into a combat section).

The story is amazing, but like the combat it expects you to pay close attention to it to follow what's going on. Also the game is fairly linear for an RPG; though the engine definitely allows for more elaborate things than it shows in the given campaign, the choices you make in it (composed mostly of dialogue) give you little more than money-rewarding (or money-saving) and combat-skirting alternate routes. Other than that... occasional typos in dialogue and other text will make you do a double-take, but aren't terrible enough to make anything illegible; you may notice various logic gaps in the story (though without a second play-through, it's hard to tell if I just wasn't paying enough attention at key moments), and at times your character might seem to be solving the mystery of the story before you, or with seemingly little evidence to go on; the story escalates in scope jarringly fast at times and focuses too little on each new revelation and also explains it far summarily (though perhaps this is to be subtle and/or entice you to research the Shadowrun table-top setting on your own, as I did).

!!SUMMARY!! A somewhat less epic (or perhaps "abridged") bleak futuristic guns-and-sorcery version of Baldur's Gate II that mixes (for the most part, successfully) 1 part intriguing real world sociopolitical elements and 2 parts real world mysticism and Dungeons-&-Dragons-style high fantasy... with all the expected interactive trimmings (dialogue, items, some puzzles, etc.) of a classic turn-based RPG and a fun but arguably deceptively simple combat system to boot.

Not for it's gameplay, which is fairly generic turn based tactical combat, but in the fact that it is shipped with the same editor the creators of the game used to make it. No modding is required to add your own content, just some time and patience.

If you are not into creating your own stories for others to enjoy then the upside of this is the fact that there are hundreds, if not more, people who love to craft stories for you to enjoy. It is possible for each and every person to craft professional-level campaigns using the level editor and a bit of imagination.

The actual gameplay is fairly generic, however. Out of combat there is a lot of talking and searching and once combat is engaged it switches to a turn-based tactical game. There are a decent amount of equipment with the ability to create more in the editor and you can build your character however you wish. It scratches an itch that most RPGs on the market can't, and that is depth. If you find a story that is written well, then this game can provide you with a satisfied feeling that even big budget RPGs like Skyrim cannot.

I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys playing RPGs and even more to anyone who enjoys creating content that can and will be enjoyed by a wide range of people.

What Shadowrun does right is the turn based game is simple but still tactical. The story moves fast and leaves me compelled to read all the text boxes.

A little mediocre are the graphics and more so the sound effects. Not a big issue unless you're expecting something that looks like XCom: Enemy Unknown.

What it does wrong is unfortunate and honestly feels like it could have been fixed with a couple of weeks more effort. This game only auto-saves. And those saves are few and far between (generally 15 to 20 minutes of game-play). This can be quite frustrating when a simple battles turns into a run of bad dice rolls and a character you didn't want dead ends of up dead.

Or, more annoyingly, when you need to shut down and spend quarter of an hour hunting for the next save point (Why not save when closing the parties locker?)

The next big issue (again a small programming issue) is that I run a higher than usual resolution but can only zoom as if I was running a much lower resolution leaving everything looking tiny including interactive icons. This is exacerbated by character dialogues that change the camera zoom. And there is a lot of dialogue.

All in a all a pretty awesome game almost broken by two small issues. Oops.

I wanted to really like this game, but unfortunately the reality fell short of my hopes and expectations. Being a kickstarter backer for this game, what I had hoped for was somewhat of a sandbox experience in which I would have plenty of side quests along with the main storyline, but instead was handed a short, linear campaign with a couple of side quests along the way.

Having said that, the game is fun, the main story line tells a solid story that feels like a Shadowrun story. You want to hate the villain, and you find your friends in an unlikely place. The combat is clean, engaging, and fun. The ability to hack into systems offer an interesting aspect to the gameplay, and I found myself wanting more opportunities to do creative things with it. Unfortunately, there were not multiple paths to achieve your goals. For example, one would hope you could creatively use hacking (called decking in the game) or magic (there's a similar astral plane that was never implemented in the game) to achieve your goals through slightly different means. This is, without question, one of the great untapped potentials of the game.

The game editor offers a lot of possibility of making your own sandbox experience, and thankfully, you can import your existing character if you are so inclined. The fact that it supports Steam Workshop works strongly in its favor, and already there are a few new stories to explore, as well as additional tools and assets for modders to play with.

Lastly, I found the experience a little quirky. Objects you can interact with has icons hovering over them, but the icons faded, and sometimes were not very responsive in coming back when I moused over the object again (I'm not sure what all that is about).

In summary, I'd say the game is good, but when taken on its own, the campaign's linearity and the fact that the main campaign is a bit short relative to similar games in its genre, pulls it back to "mediocre" territory. The editor offers the game strong hope for replayability though, and I look forward to Shadowrun Returns gaining a new life once the modders get ahold of it. I think they can make Shadowrun Returns what it truly could be now a great tactical RPG platform to tell amazing stories set in the Shadowrun universe.

A great amount of potential for combining storytelling and the feel of the original shadowrun universe, the content simply isn't there yet. You can't spend $20 on the current short storyline, which only takes a few hours to complete and has little to no replay value. Once more content is created and comes out, it has potential to be a great buy, but now it just lacks too much.

The soundtrack is lively, a just jarring enough to keep you alert. The core campaign isn't unduly challenging, but isn't easy either, and good squad tactics become essential for the later missions.

The toolset that comes with the game is one of the stronger touted features, and a number of fans are already kicking out their own mods, with varying qualities of writing and encounters.

There is also an MMO being developed. Having it's back on this lore, this game offers a very compelling story, rich characters and and immersive game play.

One downside, however, is the linearity. Even though character and class variations are well balanced and of satisfactory variety, the playthrough is linear. This wouldn't necessarily be a downside if this game was an action/adventure game; but over the years we've come expect at least some sort of openworld gameplay. I hear, however, the upcoming expansion will be addressing this.

The additional plus for this game is its workshop. You can download user made content (which exist, and are pretty good) from new classes to new campaigns.

It does seem a bit dated but if you can live without everything reflecting everything and such gimmicks, you will see a well written story (the first few hours at least that I played through so far), great atmosphere, real role play game-like descriptions.
The magic, the races, the cyber, the Matrix... everything is there. No wonder of course since the game was made by a company led by Jordan Weisman, the person who designed the Shadowrun tabletop game, so I guess it hardly gets more authentic than that.
Since I haven't finished the game yet I can't really judge the story or the late game balance, but what I can tell is that the true strength of the game lies in modding so instead of buying pricey DLCs you can actually get free user generated content. Now if I learned anything over my years of tabletop RPGs it is that people who are into it are enthusiastic and creative beyond imagination but also very adamant in interpreting the world and the rules in their own way so I am sure it is a good idea to be on the lookout for some great mods.

Once I finish the game I will change my score to 10 (or not)

but on the other hand your team (you and your hired crew, for every mission you have to hire a new crew) has more variety than x-com, since there are different races and classes (normal soldiers, mages, necromancers, deckers. The difference between a normal fantasy game like diablo there are also classes for techstuff such as deckers, for hacking and going into a matrix where where also takes place turnbased combat between your decker and his created programs against enemy programs.
It's quite fun to play and the dialogs are entertaining, but in the end it gets a bit boring. And it's not bugfree. I am now in the last chapter "the hunt begins", but there is a scripting error and I cannot continue, I cleaned the level, and a monster doesn't come out through a wall opening a new path to continue the game. It's a known error, I googled it, I might be possible to continue if I restart the level, but the problem is there is no save option, only an autosave option after full completion of a level, and the level consists of 3 stages and I am already in the last stage, and I don't want to bother running through all the 3 stages again. I have seen enough of the game and it's not evolving anymore that much. All in all, x-com combat gameplay with different character classes and magic in, entertaining dialogs and storyline in the shadowrun world told in diablo fashion. But does not evolve anymore in the end, and the combat is not complex enough, and it's not bugfree, there was no good quality assurance!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For a game with so few load-bearing walls, the lack of a more involved leveling system seems almost tired. Too tired, considering. We're talking an isometric-view game that you could run on a computer purchased 10 years ago...from Best Buy. If there's anything that should have been focused on in the game, it should have been the leveling system. However, it looks more like the creators started off nicely with the first 4-5 skills in *some* categories, then simply phoned the rest in with the back end simply having "limits" depending you race choice.

Story. Let's just very briefly discuss how asinine it is to have an RPG where the last boss can only be beaten with a specific weapon. What does one do when they level up only physical or magical attributes, and skimp on gunplay skills? What a horrible oversight.

Next, we have the rave reviews on the amazing environment in the game. I don't see it. I see a highly unpopulated world, where most of the people you meet are located in a bar.

I've never played Shadowrun before, neither on pnp nor pc. I'm a great fan of dystopian cyberpunk, but I loathe the idea of elves and other fantasy races in sci-fi. Still, I was hyped and had fairly high hopes for this game because there is a severe lack of good cRPGs these days. Every HBS game I've played before SRR have been pure and utter so while hope where high expectations where low.

    Game Mechanics:
Skills and abilities are somewhat minimalistic for a cRPG, both in number and stated function. They are however to the point and without a huge number of redundant and useless abilities. They are also numerous and deep enough to allow for strategy through character building in a meaningful way. Maybe more meaningful than many games with a more numerous and complex skill-set. This is an achievement from a game-design perspective.

Furthermore they make full use of the skills through dialogue options like Fallout 1 and 2, and planescape: torment. This works really well, even better than in those original titles!

The class-less system works perfectly, unlike many other popular cRPGs.

At a glance the skill-system looks a bit like in the mass effect franchise, while the class-less feature can be compared to the Elder scrolls franchise. Both of them works a lot better in SRR than they do in the two blockbusters!

Gameplay is real-time except for turn-based combat (like in xcom) and dialogue, just like in the first two fallout games. This works well. 2D Graphics put limitations on destruction of scenery, but compared to the gains of using 2D this matters little. There is plenty of object interaction such as looking for clues and analyzing them, hacking computers and security-networks, hacking the internet-like Matrix, finding hidden items and more.

Character Concepts work way better than I could ever imagine. I felt bad chills going down my spine as I realized that my character concept probably worked best as an Elf(!), but decided to try it out regardless. Would I have to endure glittering nail-polish, pouty lips and pink ribbons in my hair? When I found a portrait that looked more like a Necron than an Elf my grin went from one metallic ear to the other. Who would have known that the concept of elf could actually add to the feel of the fiction?!.. I'm amazed!

    The Stock Campaign:
HBS have made a very stylised «Sin City meets Blade Runner -ish» detective/agent story. They have just the right amount and type of clichés to make it work, and every element in the game contributes to this sci-fi noir feel.

Both the characters and dialogue are mature and intelligently made.

Fantastic story with no redundancy. Not once did I ask myself “why the heck am I doing this?!” Not once did I have to run errands to earn xp, or be left with the choice of being either an utter or a charity-running do-gooder. Not once was I forced into a random combat that felt out of place or redundant. It's incredibly liberating to once again play a cRPG that doesn't feel like a slaughterhouse grind. SRR do this better in its stock campaign than even Planescape: Torment did. It's not that you can avoid every combat, but rather that every darnedest one feels will-timed, proper and meaningful.

    Graphics:
2D background is beautiful and well done. Drawback no scenery destruction.
Character sprites are undefined and ugly, but I find myself not caring much about this.
Character Profile Pics are maybe the best I've seen in any game.

    Champaign Editor:
Haven't tried it yet, but I'm gonna assume it's at least able to create the stock campaign, in which case it's brilliant compared to anything out there. Can't wait to try out user-created campaigns.

    State-of-the-Game:
The game is quite stable and appears polished for the most part.

    Bad Drawbacks:
Checkpoint based saving This is such a weak and unintelligent solution that really hurts gameplay.
Pixel-clicking The activation area of sprites in the game are glitchy.

    Matters of Taste:
The game is very linear in the sense that you don't have a choice in where to go next. The areas you move through is in essence a track. However, I'be found that in this game this is a strength, as it helps focus and remove redundancies from the story.

    Short Campaign:
In my opinion a game should not drone on for the sake of adding game-hours. The campaign is compact 12 hours of constant fun. There is more fun baked into SSRs 12 hours than there is spread out amongst DAOs 60 hours or Skyrims 360 hours. Quality is equal to fun divided by time imho.

    A Conclution of Paradox:
The package of SRR as a whole is so powerful that even with the minus 30% from checkpoint-saves, it deserves the very highest score possible. Doesn't mean that it cannot be better, just that even with this glaring flaw it's the very best of it's genre so far.

An amazing job on a minimalist budget.

First off let me start by saying that if this was a AAA game I'd rate it 6 or 7 of 10, however for a small independent studio, it is top notch. First off let me start by saying that if this was a AAA game I'd rate it 6 or 7 of 10, however for a small independent studio, it is top notch. The game play could be slightly more polished(Check point saves, no custom bindings) but the flavor is spot on. Right away you are pulled into a deeply rich storyline, full of twists and turns, and denizens of the shadowrun universe. You feel the grit and hopelessness of the SINless. The base story was highly entertaining, but fairly linear...however I look at that as more of an intro to the game, a tutorial if you will, for the UGC that will be coming out in droves(if the prerelease is any indicator).

Alot of the reviews I've read are either lambasting SR:R for not being a AAA title, or can see no wrong in it. Make no mistakes there are flaws in the game, but they are relatively minor. There is no "save anywhere" but I can name AAA titles that didn't have that. No custom keybinding? Again plenty of AAA titles w/o that. A few bugs? etc.

If you are a fan of Shadowrun this is a game you don't want to miss, if you are a fan of 3rd person tactical games this is a fairly good representation of the genre. This game is well worth the $20 you can buy it for right now...and honestly I've paid $60 for games that were 1/2 as fun, or had less replayability.

Interesting game, I love the isometric graphics. However the save system is a deal breaker. Spending 20 mins talking to npcs, spending "Karma"(experience/customization points) and not being able to save is ludicrous. It works for an adventure game but not for an RPG. It's pity because, like most Shadowrun fans, I was really looking forward to this tittle.

This game is fantastic. Couldn't ask for more, except more content, which is on the way. The writing is incredible, soundtrack is outstanding, animations are well done, environments are beautiful. To me, it's an instant classic, and should be for anyone who loved the old Shadowrun books/roleplaying game and the Baldur's Gate games.

Skill progress is done well, and is nice and diverse with many options. Once again I can't wait to try out more of the other options.
Graphics style is great and reminds me of fallout 1/2 and crusader. Very happy with how it looks.

The most exciting part for me is after this campaign is done there is still Berlin coming out and an indefinite amount of user created campaigns. I'm excited to see a lot more of this world and hope it is a sales success so we can see more iterations in the future!!!

You run in the shadows, dodge corporate interests, collect favors and giri for missions to come while maintaining YOUr character as close as you can. If you like the Shadowrun setting, or you miss how games used to play back in the 80's to 90's (turn-based tactics, getting to create, name, and shape your character without the game giving you some generic name that everyone calls you and a voice making the character not really your own, a clear path and following it being the fun and not a massive "do whatever you like" being the point) and just want some updates for modern technology/ game design to them (smoother running, better animation for the characters and higher resolution of the beautiful "2D" graphics, nice menus and UI), then this game will probably entertain you.

Been a fan of Shadowrun since early 90's and was looking forward to this game. As I can forgive the straightforward story where player only controls the fights, the worst thing in this game is that there is no save game option. So basic thing in gaming and devs "forgot" to include it.

To anyone who loves Shadowrun, this is a GREAT game if for no other reason than they released the Editor with the game. I've already played on two user created adventures.
The main story is great and has a lot of old favorites making an appearance.
Plus the price is right. Yes the checkpoint system could have been done better. A lot better. But there is also a lot more to come.

Also we still have the Berlin campaign to come.

I've seen people complaining because it wasn't voiced. They were clear early on that they couldn't afford it. I'd rather have two well written campaigns than one with voice.

And it is sad when some people savage a good game because it wasn't exactly what they were expecting. Rate the game on what it tries to do. If it claims to be things it is not or is deeply flawed then give it a zero. But don't give it a zero because it didn't match up with your favorite style of play.

The developers of this game laid out exactly what they were trying to do, gave regular updates, and they delivered to the backers (except for the save system which they explained).

To those that rated this game a zero, you must not have been paying attention.
There was no bait and switch and it more than delivered on what it promised.

So far there are some good community games and mods, but this game works like how the Elder Scrolls games work. The game is good but if you have a problem with the game then a mod needs to be found or created.

Some problems with the base game.
-There is no quick save, so you will not be able to start back up in a mission if you have to leave. You have to get to a point where the game saves to continue.
-You don't have to buy ammo for your weapons. Unlimited Ammo
-There are no drops from dead people (mod to fix that!)
-The customization made early in your character can be game defining or inconsequential depending on how much experience you get throughout the campaign
-The tutorial for this game is terrible and you don't know what keys do what. You just know that the mouse works. There aren't great explanations for everything so alot of the time you just have to guess.

There are some great things about this game
-It is shadowrun and therefore has a amazing setting of a mix of technology and magic set in a cyberpunk dystopian futuristic setting. (See the bottom I explain (gush) more about the setting)
-There are/will be mods to fix the problems that you have.
-Combat is simplistic enough to learn, but interesting enough to have strategy
-The choices you make to improve your character do truly show in how your character plays and show the different classes in shadowrun fairly well. (That is without replicating shadowrun completely)
-The introduction mission that comes installed with the game introduces you to most of the aspects of shadowrun and (little spoiler) some of the weirdest and scariest stuff/horrors in shadowrun.

I truly think this game is very good and anyone who likes rpgs with a strong story aspect (fluff) would love this game.

Some more info on the setting.
The setting is a Cyberpunk dystopian futuristic setting with magic. The corporations now run the world and are basically their own counties. Only the rich have a say in the world and the poor are left in the streets dying, without help, and without citizenship. In comes you, a shadowrunner, someone who often is from the poor working your way up talking missions called shadowruns. These shadowruns can be anything from constant combat into a corporation enclave to sneaking in and causing sabotage or misdirection and more. You and your team are a inch from death and are constantly fighting to survive in this harsh place we call a world.

This game is full of bugs. I purchased this game on steam on August 16th, and still can't play it because the 1.04 patch causes an access violation for some people. Unfortunately, this patch was released just before I purchased it (lucky me lol). To make things worse, an access violation is a programming error until the developer decides to patch this, I can't play it. I take C++ programming classes and have fiddled with games for years, so believe me when I say I've done everything to get the game to work. I sent an e-mail to the developers the day after I bought the game, over a month ago. They responded, saying they were aware of the problem and were working on it. I have bought games since the original NES, and I can deal with minor bugs. Heck, I enjoyed Alpha Protocol, and that was fairly buggy. But it is painfully obvious that this game (and recent patch) were barely tested.

This game gets a 0 based on the fact that when I buy a release version of a game I expect it to at the very least run. Even if I could get it to run, it would likely still score only a 3 based on all the other goofy bugs still present in it. I really need to check more tech support forums before I buy games.

Bottom line: Before you go and get this, do yourself a favor and check the tech support forum, then if you really still want this do not buy it for the listed $20 on steam, wait for a sale. And even then, don't pay over $5. Save that cash for saints row 4 or go get XCOM: Enemy Unknown if you need some turn based strategy.

Here's couple of things I remember from playing it last summer:

    - No voice acting, you just click on speeches with no atmospheric sound or any consequence to story or gameplay whatsoever.

    - There are no puzzles, no sidequests and cutscenes, anything. It's like half of the content is missing from the game.

    - It's not worth 20.00$ - 10$ tops for me.

It's the same thing like the Baldur's Gate Enhanced edition series. People are just trying to milk your nostalgia without any decent work. BG2 EE crashes more than the pirate version and it costs 25$

These are all acceptable to a mobile gaming platform. But I think ye olde PC gamers deserves more than this rehashed crap.

I will be the first to admit that the enjoyment someone who doesn't already know the Shadowrun franchise will get out of this game might vary, but even as a long time player of the pen & paper game the game is based upon I feel that there is enough of an introduction to the Sixth World to get you invested.

The campaign that ships 'out of the box', Dead Man's Switch is a solid piece of storytelling that captures a lot of the feel of the setting. I have yet to finish it yet, but I feel like I'm almost certainly approaching the 2/3 mark at least. However, I will say that if people come to the game expecting hugely branching dialogue trees with infinite combinations of choices that make an appreciable difference to the storyline you will be disappointed. The campaign is a fairly linear story, but it plays much like I would expect a short campaign or plot arc in the pen & paper game would. As such it encapsulates that style of play, within the constraints of a non-adaptable medium such as a video game.

Gameplay-wise Shadowrun Returns is a solid turn-based RPG in the style of older titles such as Fallout. Note that I say 'in the style of', there are several options for any turn in combat based on the make-up of your team of runners, their skills, weapons, magic etc. but it lacks some of the deeper complexities such as Fallouts locational targetting system. It doesn't suffer too much for it though. I personally find the combat to be challenging enough without being overly complex, I don't have so many options that it takes 5 minutes to plan out a single combat turn.

Harebrained Schemes had to drop a few of their intended features due to time and budget constraints, but the lack of these features are not, in my opinion, game-breaking. There is no definitive stealth mechanic, save for the concept of diguises, but the game never felt like that was a limitation. More that it would have been a nice addition, if done well. The Matrix (cyberspace) was added late in production when the devs found a way they were reasonably happy with and it shows, with limited meaty segments where it makes an appreciable difference. Still, the fact that it made it in at all is a bonus.

The art and sound are fantastic across the board, some people might find the stylised 2d art to be jarring, but I think it's gorgeous and managed to capture the cyber-fantasy vibe of Shadowrun while adding a unique look-and-feel to the game. The music is listenable and not jarring, sinking into the background while also adding a solid ambience.

Checkpoint-only save system has caused a lot of controversy that I hope to avoid adding to. I will simply say that it has not detracted from my experience, but the requests for a save & quit option are both reasonable and valid. Saves are not spread too far apart in my opinion and I have never lost more than 5 to 10 minutes of progress because of it.

Lastly, the Editor. This ships with the game included in the basic price point and is the icing on the cake. The tools to create your own content for a game are a welcome addition to any title, just look at the Elder Scrolls Creation Kit, or the editor for the two Neverwinter Nights games. Both of these tools have spawned fantastic content and I am confident that the Shadowrun Returns Editor will do just the same. There are limitations in the game, and the core campaign is a good sample of some of what can be accomplished with the tools (the Editor is precisely what the devs used to build the game and you can even open up the campaign itself to see how they did it all, which is VERY useful for people interested in how they did thing X in scene Y).

All in all a solid starting point and a reasonably successful Kickstarter funded title.

Could it have been better? Of course, but when one considers the size of the team that worked on it, the overall development cycle time and the budget they were working with, what we have been presented with is an impressive piece of work with a great deal of potential for the future, both through official and fan-created expansion content.

I would highly recommend that anyone who enjoys TBS(turn based strategy), RPG, and Fantasy/Sci-fi to check this game out!! Now to the exposition of the game's merits and faults. Shadowrun Returns plays similarly to Xcom: Enemy Unknown except that you don't upgrade your base of operations Between areas, you are usually at the Seamstresses Union where you catch up with the merchants, employees, and patrons on rumors, gossip, stories, and history as well as outfit yourself with gear and companions for your shadowruns. This mechanic works quite well and gives the player a nice break from the action and helps you connect with the iconic inhabitants of the Seamstresses Union. When it comes time to duke it out in combat with nefarious thugs, cults, and corporate organizations the combat is excellent. I did not fully explore all of the possible skills that fall under the different attributes, but guns, melee, magic, spirits, drones, and decking(hacking into the matrix) all work quite well. Guns are by far(especially the Assault Rifle) the most damaging and flexible in combat. However, the skills that fall under conjuring and magic can be very helpful in regards buffing allies or debuffing enemies as well as obstructing or hampering enemies. Overall I really enjoyed the combat and there were even some encounters where I had to play through them about 5 times just to get past them. But that was for maybe 3 out of 10-15 encounters in the game if my estimations are correct. I also enjoyed all the dialogue which was well written in that it was great in terms of humor, seriousness, verbal cues, and depth. The plot really felt like a story, which is more than some games like Brink, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, and Dragon's Dogma can say(those are all the games I believed would have great stories but didn't and instead only delivered on gameplay). I can safely tell you that Shadowrun returns delivers on both fronts. Now to the faults which are few and forgivable though it would be nice if they were addressed. There are checkpoints at subsections of areas and transitions into new areas like going back and forth between the Seamstresses Union and some other location or proceeding further into a location. I can see how they would hope to discourage allowing players to save every single turn in battle or save all the time in order to get the most out of every conversation by making all the right choices. However I think that a comprise between manual and automatic would be an allowance of manual saves in addition to the auto saving at checkpoints then when you feel you really need to save you can. Now enough of the save system which is manageable(if you remember to copy every single autosave checkpoint so that a checkpoint's autosave doesn't get overwritten by the next checkpoint). One thing that dissapointed me a little bit was the lack of other attributes that characterized weapons, because there is certainly others beyond damage, range, and capacity(guns). Some guns in the store would have the same damage and range, but the more expensive one would have less capacity. There must be something exemplary about the more expensive one that would justify its price tag.In addition, the story did not have any major dialogue decisions that affected the outcome of the game in any significant way. In addition, it was sometimes difficult to select the tile that you wanted a character to move to since you could not rotate the camera, but this did not affect the outcomes of combat really since it was pretty infrequent. Though there are these flaws, I would like to point out the reasons for them and how they can be resolved. I'm going to compare the making of Halo 4 to Shadowrun Returns. Halo 4 had around a $100 million dollar budget, 200 developers/employees, and a 3 1/3 years development cycle. Shadowrun Returns had around a $2 million budge, 22 staff, and a 1 1/3 years development cycle. Do these numbers mean anything. Yes. For Harebrained-Schemes, they had a shorter time table and limited financial and development resources. Maybe that's why they didn't get in the other statistics or characteristics concerning weapons(though this may have been a design choice). Maybe a manual save system and non rotating camera weren't possible for development reasons due to the tight schedule and the issues they could have caused during the software engineering process or yet again they may have been design decisions. And last of all there is only so much content that a team of 22 can develop for a rich story. I would rather have a great story than a terrible story filled with important choices that impacted the direction of the plot. Plus buyers can mod the game to extend the content and fix issues. The environment can obscure certain areas at the bottom of the screen, there's no ability to traverse floors, Speechcraft while serviceable, is fairly no-thrills and it can be a bit difficult to control units close to each other in battle. Plus the main campaign kinda felt pretty short. Finally, its checkpoint save system was not fun to use.

Still, I enjoyed it. A good respectable return by the franchise.

Bad writing is and forever will be bad writing and Shadowrun Returns is just plain and simply poorly written. This might not be such a big problem if it weren't for it being the story that the developers intended to carry this work (the gameplay certainly can't) and as it stands it really drags the whole experience down.

However they don't mention that combat requires AP (Action Points) while you do have unlimited ammo, you don't have Unlimited AP and have to plan you moves according. Every action in combat from reloading your weapon to moving in for the perfect kill consumes AP. So there is a challenge in the combat in spending your AP wisely.

Graphics are great, a hand drawn feel that makes this isometric world become Shadowrun and brings it to life. Also musical score is good, and Harebrained Schemes hired the musical composers for the SNES and Sega Genesis games to do the musical score for Shadowrun Returns.

I do agree that the save system could have been better. That for today's gaming market either have a save anywhere feature or some kind of in-game save option vs. a checkpoint save system. So because of the save system I do advise anyone playing this game to have some time on their hands and that it's not meant for casual play.

tl;dr: Better than I'd expect for the price. Needs a patch to fix its few serious bugs. Subtract a point if Shadowrun nostalgia doesn't attract you.

    The Good:

    1. The writing, especially portrayal use of NPCs. In particular, the NPCs at the hub are charming and make me care.

    2. The character improvement interface (spending Karma) does a good (not perfect) job explaining the benefits of each upgrade.

    3. Nostalgia. I played 1st edition tabletop Shadowrun, read several of the novels, and played the SNES and Genesis games this story made me nostalgic for all of them.

    4. Tactical map design. The level designs and cover mechanic made every run, and every group loadout, a new game for me in terms of how I handled simply moving through an empty room. As icing on that cake...

    5. The Overwatch mechanic. This ability to hold an action makes turn-based combat far less abstract.

    6. Surprising usefulness and nice touches in decking. Hacking a camera controller lifts Fog of War around that camera in meatspace. Hacking a turret turns it against your enemies. If a device gets destroyed, its corresponding matrix node shows as "Disconnected."

    7. Few game-breaking bugs. I have seen only one so far, and it can be overcome during play.

    8. Length of the game. I've been playing on Hard, and I am an exploration/story gamer so I am slower than most anyway. YMMV if you cut the most optimal path to endgame, but my first-run-thru vs the game's cost, works out to pennies on the dollar.

    9. Built-in campaign creation tools bundled with the game a few highly-rated user adventures and resource kits for adventure creation, are already available on Steam.

    10. Gunplay sound design.

    11. Art direction. Bearing in mind that this is _not_ a AAA title, you might wish the artwork was grimmer and darker, but it's consistently high-quality. Aside from a little corner-cutting with character models (e.g., not enough hairstyles and body shapes to make everyone look like their portrait) it looks stylized and fetching.

    12. Good use of etiquette in dialog trees. This alone puts a veneer of real "role playing" into the game and would have been sorely missed if absent.

    The Mixed:

    1. The music. I see many raves about the music, so I may be alone here. It reminds me of EvE Online's music very atmospheric at first, but droning and eventually grating. (Normally I can't get enough of good video game music.)

    2. Use of non-combat skill sets in the campaign is limited. Decking is especially limited in early game. Etiquette is the exception.

    3. No world map and near-zero reason to explore. Very little is off the beaten path, and nobody will confuse SRR with an open world sandbox. Given the development budget, it is perhaps for the best that creative juices were focused on the story at hand.

    4. A few isolated story moments make it clear that a writer was lazy or rushed. (Looking at you, Telestrian's VP of Security office scene!) These are as rare (very) as they are awkward (very).

    5. IC (enemies during decking) are limited. I never encountered trap 'n traces, enemy deckers, honeypots, etc. When decking with your main character, losing cybercombat vs white IC results in Game Over (instead of forced logout with dumpshock) which feels like a cover-up for the shallow IC capabilities.

    6. You are unable to upgrade hired and friendly runners your most loyal partner spends the whole game without armor.

    The Ugly:

    1. Hier a editer next teim u maek a gaem becuz holee carp dis neeedid won. (Rampant run-on sentences, spelling mistakes, etc.)

    2. Did they steal the "metahuman getting injured" reaction sounds from World of Warcraft? Yes, I think they did. Particularly from the male humans, female humans, and Death Knight's summoned ghouls.

    3. Dialog option text is consistently _invisible_ in 2 or 3 conversations near endgame. You won't know what your character's choices are for some of the most important conversations in the story, nor is there any indication what you chose after you pick something at random. 4. Stepping away from my computer for 2 minutes with the help section up, overheated my laptop, forcing it to shut down. Yes, the help screen tried to melt my GPU. 5. Inventory management is nigh horrible. Inconsistencies plague the Outfit and Cyberware interfaces in particular. Items found during a run cannot be traded to another party member. A grenade is treated as taking up the same "space" for inventory purposes as a fully-automated robo-trauma-and-surgery kit. 6. Game has no save feature except checkpoint saves at the beginning of each mission. This is a big problem if an hour at the hub and an hour in a mission both need to be repeated because you spent your cash unwisely. The rewind feature is excellent and should be kept, but is no substitute for the hours of your life you'll lose to this shortcoming.

Because you need to read more, slacker. Gameplay is too simple. That way everyone can enjoy. Hate not being able to save when you want? It was designed this way so you couldn't save before every fight, you must keep going with the run regardless of the health/supply status of your team.

Not to mention how for instance the new x-com turn based engine shows how a good UI should be done. This is none of the above.

Storyline is linear, and falls flat on it's face. Some of the text is ok to read, but really if you are used to reading good books. This isn't one of those. Compared to some other video game text/stories it is overall ok. For 1.2million budget they could have had some voiceovers on important characters/plot events maybe, just to give the game a bit of a not 20 years old feel.

Nothing redeeming about this game at all really, if you are looking for a turn based RPG combat game. Go get the old x-com, or Jagged Alliance, or BG, or one of the many other games from the 90's. Most of them have, better interface, better graphics and better storyline.

After looking on Metacritic I can tell what they did spend all the extra money on, creating sock puppet accounts to vote 9/10 and 10/10 for this obvious game that any sane person would never give over a 7 for.

I was a huge fan of the SNES title. The look, sound and atmosphere of the original was something I had never experienced before and I fell in love with it. 'Returns' does a fantastic job of capturing the flair of the original- the locations, lore and terminology will immediately bring an old fan back. The art is fantastic, the music is catchy and appropriate, and the battles are fair yet challenging. The story is very immersive, and does a great job at drawing you into it.

Aside from my minor gripes about the save system, the linear nature of the game itself and a few glitches which caused me to restart, it was a rather solid title. However, the one thing which is the real killer is the length of the campaign. I read a few other reviews with the same opinion, and I must agree: the ending is VERY abrupt. By the time you make it to the final battle, it will honestly only feel like the end of act 1 rather than THE end. The game builds the plot to a head, spends so much time fleshing out its details and things to come that when you succeed in "battle X" youre expecting it to lead into 'all hell breaks loose' mode. But that mode never comes. You succeed in finding the killer, and even though the universe has blown up around you with many other much-more-important events, the game just ends with a condescending pat on the back. It is.....disappointing. Its the equivalent of watching "Empire Strikes Back" and then never seeing "Jedi". Its the ultimate gamer-tease, and in a title so set on its dialogue and story, its like ripping the last 50 pages out of "Return of the King". That is to say- its a fantastic ride until the end, where youll find yourself wanting more.

Im not sure whether to like or dislike this game now, just because of the length which it is. I originally gave it an 8, but after the game cuts itself off at what seems like halftime, I cant give it more than a 6 now. Very disappointing, especially considering that the Kickstarter alone brought in nearly 2 million dollars to fund an independent game. Heres hoping for some DLC or at least some good community-made content.

The graphics and effects are pretty mundane, the tactical system fairly awkward and controls prosaic (not as good as Xcom for example) the camera limited to a single isometric view, the tailoring of your character extremely limited, the environment, okay, but with very limited space you can access. The game also lacks the multi-player capacity you might expect, so is essentially a platform for individuals to play solo through DLC/user generated Shadowruns.

It's perhaps most like Neverwinter Nights 1, yet lacks that old classics depth or variety. Saying that it might well improve as user content develops (which was what made NWN1 so special). I appreciate it is an indie title and a labour of love, yet I feel slightly ripped off for my £14. It would have felt fairer to pay between £5 to £8. On the plus side, I think it should run okay on low spec computer and so allow many fans who aren't necessarily computer fans to take part.

The pacing of the game does seem a little off and some of the skills can seem a little overpowered, you'll find yourself becoming very strong very fast even on the higher difficulties. I didn't find I had a problem with the checkpoint system and not having a save system did stop me from save scumming. But I think it should have had a proper save system, some of the levels drag. However -most- of the checkpoints I would say are within 10-20 minutes of one another.

Overall the game engine and editor will prove to be the best things out of this project I feel. The game, while solid doesn't really live up to what could be extracted from such solid mechanics.

Pets never show their abilities or stats until used which for some pets makes you use it up. No random missions to side quest with. No random matrix runs. I have found 1 complete side quest/job, just 1. Social Options do not seem to be randomized at all, you either have a stat and automatically get the NPC to do whatever you ask or you don't and you always fail. Sharing gear with allies means that they steal the gear and never return them. You can't give your allies better guns from your inventory even if they have empty slots to equip more.
Immersion issues: "Burnt Out Mages" and some other NPCs have Cyberware yet unaffected 6 essence.
My review is based on expected vs delivered and if I would recommend this to my family and friends, the answer is that I hope none of them waste their money on this game that is the worse I have seen any Shadowrun Product.

Summary: A great game with a well written story that can only get better and more rewarding as user generated content becomes available. Highly recommended!

I have to say that people making claims here that the company "should have done more" with the budget they had clearly have NO IDEA how expensive making games actually is. Let's just consider some game budgets: GTA IV $100 million (over 50 times the budget and delivers an open world AAA experience), L A Noire $50 million (over 25 times the budget and delivers full voice acted story based action game), Baldur's Gate $4.5 million (about 3 times the budget, isometric, mostly text conversations with a little audio, large scale and mostly open world, no user content tools). So what has been made for under $1.5 million? Erm... Dragon's Lair, Pac-Man (including marketing), Penny Arcade Adventures Ep 1 (only $1 million). I think Shadowrun Returns delivers in spades compared to those games. An excellent job by the developers.

I enjoyed the engaging story most of all, but I also enjoyed playing a character that was more powerful in the Matrix (Cyberspace) than in real life until I beefed up pistol skills to match; I thought that this was a great way of making those characters valuable to the team beyond the odd extra option in a menu. I can live with the limitations of the game, given its budget, because it delivers so much if you are prepared to look past the faults.

Loved it and would highly recommend it.

This game is really good, The combat is fun and feels satisfying and there is some great story telling, the editor is very powerful and I love the art. The only issues are that at times, the editor can be buggy nothing that bad0 and the save system is not the best. But I'm willing to overlook these as I've had fun.

A really great throwback to the old CRPG of past. If you enjoyed games like Baldurs Gate, Planescape Torment, Fallout, and Fallout 2, this game is right up your alley.

Shadowrun Returns is based on the old pen and paper game Shadowrun. They have successfully recreated the spirit of the dystopian cyber punk future in this game.

The last mission was the only time that I cursed the lack of a manual save system mainly because a game bug made me loose some progress. Note that the game usually saves everytime you enter a new location so every 15 min or so. So that issue is not as horrible as some people make it out to be. This is a great title. It has a two major flaws. It is way too short and it is way too linear. If you can forgive those two things, then the game will be a very enjoyable experience for you. Why? Well, the atmosphere is spot on, the writing is good, the game has both tactical and strategic depth and, well, it is just plain fun. The save system is good but some are put off by it.

    Controversy:
A quick word about the save system. How does the current system work? It already saves for you once every mission (usually about every 30 minutes) and you are able to "rewind" to previous saves. This is more than enough. However, this system makes you be very mindful of your strategic choices. For example, if a level may have multiple engagements, do you use up all your consumables in the first battle if pressured or do you save some for the next? This save system is actually fairly brilliant and it makes player choices feel very impactful. Sure, you may "lose" 30 minutes of your time if you fail a mission but if the players takes that loss as an opportunity to learn instead of an arbitrary punishment, then it becomes a positive feature rather then a negative one. Frankly, a save anywhere system would not have had such nail biting gameplay and I for one am glad they went with a system that limited "save scumming."

    The Bad:
The linear structure is a major flaw, however. The game plays out like a series of combat encounters with noncombat encounters in between to advance the story. This makes the game feel similar to a console tactical rpg title rather than a true to form computer rpg. Still, the execution is good and, unlike console titles, you do not fight outlandish demons with girlish prepubescent teen males that dye their hair blue. If you can get over the linearity, the game is quite fun.

The game's length (only 10 hours) is a bit on the short side. It is roughly 25% the length of a true to form cRPG. Even if you consider that this game costs half as much as other titles, the length should still, mathematically, be twice what it is. This means some conversation skills are rarely used, decking is underutiized, there are very few side missions, etc. This game has, to its credit, a very robust and well designed rpg system but, sadly, not enough places to allow certain character builds to shine. Still, it DOES come with an editor and the hope of community generated content. I am not sure if there enough folks in the community for this title to generate the content the devs claim will appear but you never know. I did feel I got my money's worth from the included campaign and I will be replaying with a different character build.

    The Good:
There is plenty to love in this title. If you have every read cyberpunk or seen a cyberpunk film, then you will feel instantly at home with this game's story. Shadowrun is a bit different than typical cyberpunk since it had some fantasy tropes as well (elves, dwarves, etc) but this does not take away from the experience it adds to it.

The presentation is great. The music is perfect. It is atmospheric, non-intrusive and very immersive. The graphics are crisp and well designed. At first, I felt the character models were a bit too cartoony and not gritty enough but I came to appreciate them.

The combat is turn based executed well. In other words, the engagements are small enough that waiting for your turn does not test your patience instead of your tactical decisions. You have a host of special moves, magic, summons, etc to choose from but I never felt overwhelmed or lost. Everything made sense after a bit of experimentation.

The writing is very well done. This definitely takes me back to the older Shadowruns on the SNES and Genesis but the writing is far more mature and well done. Sure, some stuff gets a little cliche here and there but cyberpunk is supposed to be at least a little cliche. Some familiar noir elements should bleed though.

    Final Verdict:
The game has alot going for it and if not for two major flaws (length and linearity), I would have scored it higher. Also, don't be put off by the save system and the turn based combat these are strengths not weaknesses.

3.) A World-Map & the ability to revisit some areas would have been a nice plus, but not necessary for the campaign. This is supposed to be resolved with the upcoming German DLC campaign.
4.) There is no ability to swap gear with your followers hirelings. This isn't an issue in the Seattle campaign, but is a huge limitation for custom module design.

All in all, SR:R is a good game with a lot of potential going forward.

With custom content (available in the first few months), an open roleplaying ruleset, and editors galore and a community to back it, this is my new favorite PnP RPG on PC. Does it have bugs? you betcha. Aside from a general focus on story (which was flawless) over combat, at times it was very slow with little action, hard to click areas and a general stubbornness of clickable artifacts and precision of the mouse cursor. I say this out of respect and keeping it all in balance, it still deserves its 9. Its not logical to bring down a game for a few annoyances, for how good it is, and how good it could be. Some may not agree, but 3 things are true: a) you will be glad you played it if you liked Baldur's Gate, b) it is in the style of a pen and paper RPG with custom content galore, and c) If you love quality music and sound and writing, you will love it.

Is it short? Yes. Are the tactical options somewhat limited? Yes. Is the tactical iso combat frustrating and unintuitive at points? Absolute.

But did it capture the essential flavor of the original SNES and Genesis game? Yes! Is it a decent tactical turn based squad game? Yes. Is the story better than 90% of games out there? Very much so.

Ultimately, SR is a competent, but as yet unremarkable old-school RPG. Future patches and player content may bring more to the table.

Hopefully SR's first effort will prove to be just the leading crest of a small wave in isometric oldschool RPGs, because by itself it is somewhat overwhelming.

    Pros:
    -Great user mod tools.
-Solid combat system, though you probably need to crank up the difficult to experience any challenge.
-Strong atmosphere, reinforced by the consistent tone of the (generally competent) writing.

    Cons:
-Far too linear to be a true successor to the isometric RPG classics.
-Save system can be inconvenient (though I personally was only trivially inconvenienced by it).

    TBD:
-Unclear if SR's community will be large and creative enough to supply interesting community content.
-Harebrained Schemes has heard the most common critiques of the game regarding linearity, save system, length, etc., and the next campaign ("Berlin") will attempt to address them.

Result: A very powerful game editor. The game engine itself is a little wonky, but the storytelling capabilities are endless. The campaign included with the game is very linear, but the UGC that was already out when the game released has been very satisfying.

Inventory is streamlined, with unlimited ammo but very limited capacity for gear. This can be unlocked with skill bumps.

The biggest hang up on the game is the save system, which should be thought of as a bookmark at the beginning of a chapter in the story. It takes some getting used to, but the end result lends to the more gritty choice and consequences nature of the setting.

If I were to judge the game just on Dead Man's Switch (the main campaign) I would give it a 7. The editing tool however is very important in making this a successful game.

    Bottom Line:
This game has a lot of bang for its buck in an age of $60 starter games with endless DLC that completes the story. All UGC created from the Seattle Pack is free.

If you want another Mass Effect or X-Com, you're better off re-playing those instead.

If you are on the fence right now, check back in a few months to see what the community has made.

First of all, I agree, the checkpoint-system IS something which can bother you, especially when you realize that your team isn't going to make it because you as the player did a poor decision. Of course, this requires you as the player to think about it in a proper manner beforehand, but sometimes you just can't predict the outcome.

The linearity of the game CAN be a hassle, but it's not necessarily one. As far as I'm concerned I even have a lot of fun with my second run, as I've switched from a Street Samurai to a Physical Adept, which means I can use a lot of strength to change some situations, which means I'm sometimes able to intimidate someone or move something out of the way in order to take a different path; no matter how you chose to play, you can always change some bits that are occuring within the game and therefore get a different experience, even though the main "road" of the game remains the same.

But you can clearly get that the game isn't about the main campaign "Dead man's switch". It really lives up on the editor and requires the community to create new content, which is more important than ever at this point of the game. 12 hours for the original campaign is a good thing and I'm excited to see some magic happen as the editor is a pretty powerful tool.

The campaign itself was well... sometimes a bit rubbish. The twists weren't really surprising and the writing could've been better sometimes, but at other moments in the game they weren't so bad at all.

For that matter, even though they advanced to the Linux version number more than half of their website still refers to the previous patch level. Another exampleWhat a wonderful idea... A fairly flawed game that I wanted to like, but the controls are so clunky and slow, and the game so 1-dimensional that I can't give it better than a 4.

Pile of garbage. If I have no stash I cannot buy **** for my characters. My main needs to be able to use what I buy because the stash disappears when I select another character. The thing is this **** over UGC too. Pistols are **** Oh and the graphics are ****

Shadowrun Returns is a bit more simplistic than I had hoped for, but at the same time it is not bad at all. [Sept 2013]

Shadowrun Returns is a faithful reinterpretation (and in a vague sense, sequel) to the SNES game from 20 years ago, maybe a bit too faithful. Though most aspects of the the wild and unruly Shadowrun world is included, the promise of this game lies more in the open embrace of the mod community than the included adventure.

Shadowrun Returns will probably please most fans if perhaps not blow anyone out of the water. The campaign is well written and serves as a good introduction for new players. The variety in combat and character creation and dialogue options is great but suffers from a badly implemented autosave system. With lots of new campaigns on the horizon Shadowrun Returns is well worth keeping an eye on.
