A shooter that barely rises above being completely mediocre because of it's self-aware and campy vibes and its buckets of blood. Don't even attempt however if you have no patience for annoying, unfunny comedy because this game heavily dates itself with references to memes and jokes that were long out of date, even when the game was released.

It's kinda a guilty pleasure for me. Controls are kinda clunky and protagonist is really unlikable asshat at first (and for some maybe till the end). But it really has a heart! Main story is something worth exploring, bossfights are interesting, two main characters really start to grow on you, swordplay while clunky is an interesting addition. It's overall really worth checking out

SHadow warrior 2013 is a reboot of the classic 90s shooter , this game also came with a free copy of that classic shooter for me , the first time i played this game i hated it , i thought this game was dumb i was confused why my guns would run out of ammo and all my enemy's would still be there but that was my call of duty addled brain not being smart enough to learn the game at all.SHadow warrior 2013 is a reboot of the classic 90s shooter , this game also came with a free copy of that classic shooter for me , the first time i played this game i hated it , i thought this game was dumb i was confused why my guns would run out of ammo and all my enemy's would still be there but that was my call of duty addled brain not being smart enough to learn the game at all.

Story: you play as "LO WANG" self proclaimed and actual demon slaying bad ass and you are sent to acquire a sword from some other dude whos not important by any means necessary OH then suddenly demons and you got to deal with them now with your new demon buddy . the story is actually full of twists and turns , betrayals and plot twists some you don't expect and some you would , for a game that starts like a meme game its got a surprising amount of substance
    STory: 8/10

World building: i didn't really know what to say about the world of shadow warrior except that its actually some what believable the demons seem to have their own higher archy and reason for wanting to take over the human world as well as reasons for humans to actually call for the demons it doesn't really do anything clever or all that surprising but its definitely solid effort , i think this game would have been considered racist if it didn't also respect the culture its based on , while lo wang is mostly a stereotype and all the fortune cookies are old man jokes there is alot of love for Japanese culture , as dave chapplle once said " No one is to good to be the butt of a good joke "
    World building: 7/10

Graphics: the game looks great even if it is a little cartoony at times the gore in this game really helps sell the violence and the fact that your main weapon is a sword and the slices are mostly correct to where you actually slice is impressive , the environments are breath taking sometimes , my favorite scene is when lo wang is walking cross the bridge to zillas main palace
    Graphics: 9/10

Gameplay: this game shines in how it plays , it feels very ahead of its time and that's why i didn't like it at first but this time when i played it i played on the hardest difficulty witch is surprisingly balanced , every time i died it felt like i had made a mistake not that the game threw to much at me at once . the demons are fantastic , they all have different strategy's for dealing with them and certain guns work better one certain ones , but they are all weak to the sword. nothing wa smore satisfying than having the onslaught of demons near the end of the game , i think i tried near 100 times to beat it dodging and weaving my way in-between demons picking and choosing when i shoot , reload slice , use KI it was all calculated because it had to be calculated , i had a blast playing this game and the game play was and is superb , it plays a lot like doom 2016 except 3 years before that
    Gameplay: 10/10

Sound design: the music is really well done , blending big orchestral sounds with classic Japanese instruments fitting the tone of the game very well the music almost makes it feel like a cool Saturday morning cartoon , the voice acting is also particularly great lo wang and his demon buddy play off each other really well and Jason liebrect gives a great performance as lo wang
    Sound design 8/10

    4. Lo Wang is one of the coolest shooter heroes. With its own specific humor
    5. The original storyline was not much more than porn. In the remake, the developers twisted the plot around the invented mythology and did not badly dilute the game with comics.

    Disadvantages of the game:
    1. Variety of enemies - you always want more.
    2. In order to feel the game, you need to play only on high difficulty. The game is too easy on medium difficulty
    3. A "gassed" level in the laboratory is a dubious decision of the level designer.
    4. Overly light bosses.

To summarize, we can say that the developers of Shadow Warrior (2013) came up with everything that Bethesda + id sowtware passed off as their ideas in 2016.

Shadow Warrior 2013 reboot impresses with suprisingly high production qualities for a AA work from a relatively (at the time of release atleast) unknown polish studio, and while it starts out as strong, the more you play, sadly the more it's pretty face starts to wear off.

Going right to the meat of the game that is the gameplay, or the FPS mechanics, the gunplay is quite average even by 2013 standards, genre staples like the SMG, revolver, shotgun barely have any feel or feedback, they feel rather numb, made more lackluster by unimpressive gun sound effects. Shotgun especially felt pretty damn underwhelming. The crossbow felt more satisfying to use, as it had actual weight behind firing it and in how tears apart enemies, like in the charged mode.
The katana which is the game's signature weapon was a mixed bag too. It's fun when it works, slicing up demons is on the of better parts of the game, but it's also kinda unrefined, and even when upgraded, the sword just doesnt feel that powerful, it's best noticed when dealing with the skeleton demons, they block your katana attacks ridiculously often and are quite resistent to body attacks from it aswell. Against bigger foes it also is quite useless, unless you spam the combo strike attack.
I didnt find much use for most of the special combos either, i didnt use them all that often as i kept relying mostly on standard attacks, just my playing style i guess. There's a decent enemy variety which manages to feel different as new enemies get thrown at you throughout the game, each requiring a unique approach in tackling them.

Level design felt old schoolish, but not necessarily in a bad way. Since there are no hand holding mechanisms telling where you have to go, it can be challening making out where you need to go and what you need to do, but thats the kind of challenge i'm ok with. I only got majorly confused once, during the ship yard level, when it wasnt clear how you need to scale a gap in the ship's interior, turned out the solution was pretty obvious. While the level design is quite linear, it still offers a reasonable amount of freedom for exploration. Even though i tried to explore as much as i could, i still couldnt find all the secrets they had, so devs put an effort into making it a completionist's pain in the arse.

The premise revolving around Wang getting involved with mythical eternal ancient power struggles across realms is interesting enough, but the plot itself of the game not so much. It's often tough to follow what's going on as the game progresses. Though by the end of the game the story got actually kinda emotional, in a good way.
Taking away from the interviews done with Flying Wild Hog, it was revealed that the writing in the 2013 remake wont be as edgy as in it's 90's counterpart, which at first begs the question why'd you want to remake it in the first place ? Politically incorrect edge was a big part of the charm of those 90's shooters in the first place. However truth be told, Lo Wang and Hoji in the game still dont shy away from humour that would severly upset many of the modern fragile video games journalists and other their like minded imbeciles, but knowing it could've been more impactful is certainly somewhat disappointing.
The cutscenes in the game were handled in quite a sub-par way aswell, character faces are never in focus in them and you view, listen to them from a hefty distance, making it at times difficult to make out what the hell they are actually saying.

Like i mentioned before graphically the game is quite impressive for what it is, especially in the earlier stages that are set in the traditional japanese gardens and bamboo forests. Pretty good attention to detail is also paid even to rather marginal objects of the game's world, aswell as allowance for a reasonable amount of destruction of them.
No complaints to be found in the performance department either, game ran pretty smoothly.

All that said, the game is still pretty decent fun and if you're looking for a action game / FPS that doesnt follow the tired modern ''gritty & realistic'' trend, and doesnt take itself super seriously, you might wanna give SW 2013 a try.

On its own, the combat is fantastic, the graphics and scenery can be gorgeous at points, and the story is highly engaging. There's a lot of hectic action, good pacing, and a pretty decent length (took me around fifteen hours to beat).

Beyond that, this game was made by fans of the original. That you can tell. There are secret areas patterned off the first game, this game includes several pop-culture references, including some in hidden areas. The multitude of enemies and fast pace gameplay is more reminiscent of FPS games before the jump to 3D, when they could actually have more things on the screen at once. There's some callbacks as well (the rabbits, for example), and it does give us the story as to why Zilla is so upset with Lo Wang in the first game.

The game is not without fault though. My biggest complaint would be some of the very repetitive level design. You'll see some of the same building designs in the early and late game. Mind you, it does make a bit of sense that areas designed by the same person (in game person, Zilla), would have a similar look and feel. Plus, those building designs are actually taken from the original game. So I can forgive it, but that doesn't make it any less redundant.

The boss fights are also the typical hunt the weak spot grindfests. Though there is some interesting bits here and there in them. Also, none of the weapons truly stood out in my mind. Other than the weapons taken from the original, they seemed to be basic shooter fare. And some weapons I pretty much never bothered using. Mostly, I stuck to the sword early game, and then had to mix it up a bit more later on.

In the end though, even with the complaints, I had more fun with this game than I've had in a while. So I highly recommend it.

Shadow Warrior is a great game when it comes to melee combat, but the gunplay is very weak compared to something like Serious Sam or Painkiller. Sadly, player is forced to use ranged weapons periodically(e.g. in boss battles) and at those moments are very boring.

so you gotta slice everyone up with your sword..
I reall loved the first few hours of this 11 hour total game, and I really loved the final few hours..
But things start to get pretty bad in the middle..
At the start this is a very linear game..
Its essentially call of duty with with swords..
Though as you progress the game youll find new weapons and even a demon budy to accompany you on your journey that lives inside your head and with help make for some great comedic moments…
    The 2 have great chemistry..
    Levels are pretty straight forward..
Look everywhere for money and ammo and progress through the glowing door…
And then demon creatures are introduced that reward you with karma…
And this is where a bit of puzzle solving is introduced..
AND BY PUZZLE SOLVING I MEAN THE DOORS HAVE SEALS AND YOU HAVE TO FIND 1 TO 3 STATUES AND DESTROY THEM BEFORE YOU CAN MOVE ON..
I DIDN’T MIND THIS AT ALL AT FIRST, YOU CAN ALSO FIND TUBS OF KARMA AND CRYSTALS WHILE YOURE ON YOUR SEARCH FOR ITEMS AND STATUES..
AND YOUR MONEY, KARMA, AND CRYSTALS ALL GO INTO UNLOCKING NEW MOVES WITH YOUR KI AND UPGRADING YOUR WEAPONS..
YOUR KI CAN BE USED AS A SHIELD IN BATTLE AS WELL AS HEALING YOURSELF FOR EXAMPLE..
SO UPGRADING THESE SPECIAL MOVES IS WORTH IT AND GIVES INCENTIVE TO EXPLORE..
BUT THE GAME SLOWLY STARTS TO LOSE ITS LINEAR FEEL AND GET A BIT MORE MAZY TOWWARDS THE MIDDLE OF THE GAME…
AND THIS STRETCH IS SO HORRIBLY PACED THAT I WAS TEMPTED TO QUIT PRACTICALLY THE ENTIRE TIME..
HERE THERES WAY TOO MUCH CEAL BREAKING AND OPEN FEELING BACK TRACKY WORLDS INSTEAD OF THE FUN LINEAR KILL EVERYTHING IN YOUR WAY STYLE OF GAMEPLAY UP TO THESE POINTS…
YOULL BE SEARCHING AND RETRIEVING ITEMS..
    THROWING SWITCHES, RETRACING YOUR STEPS…
BUT THE PACING HERE IS THROWN OFF BY HOW CONSTANTLY THIS GAME SPAWNS IN ENEMIES AT YOU
ITS PRACTICALLY LITERALLY EVERYTIME YOU TURN A CORNER ITS ENEMIES TO FIGHT…
IT JUST DOESN’T STOP AND YOU HAVE TO KILL THEM ALL BEFORE YOURE ALLOWED TO MOVE ON…
THIS ISNT AS BIG OF A DEAL WHEN THINGS ARE FUN AND LINEAR..
BUT WHEN YOURE ASKED TO PROBLEM SOLVES, FIND STATUES, AND REMEMBER WHERE THE CEAL YOU BROKE WAS..
IT GETS ANNOYING THAT YOUR CONCENTRATION IS CONSTANTLY BEING BROKE WITH BATTLES..
THERE ARE SOME MASSIVE BOSS BATTLES THROWN IN HERE AS WELL TO EASE THE PACE A LITTLE
    BUT AS HINTED EARLIER…
THE FINALY3 OR SO CHAPTERS FIX THIS… SO ITS WORTH GETTING OVER THIOS SPEED BUMP FOR..
THE GAME GETS BACK TO ITS BEING GOOD TERRITORY….
PRACTICALLY EVERY PROBLEM THIS GAME HAS IS FIXED IN ITS SEQUEL AND YOURE NOT MISSING MUCH BY SKIPPING AND GOING RIGHT TO SHADOW WARRIOR 2…

The game is fluid and without any bug;

History: Complicated. I particularly had a hard time understanding the story behind each character and the main reason why the main character is behind gathering the parts of the katana. I found all the characters very superficial, except the main one, in which, due to the narrative, you begin to identify.

Some enemies shake up your aim, which can be very frustrating, forcing you to stop attacking for a few seconds until you recover. It can be difficult to tell if you are hitting certain enemies, such as the berserker, as there is no indication of damage until it's dead. Hitboxes/aim sometimes felt inaccurate.

The heal ability would sometimes fail to activate and instead use weapon's secondary fire, which caused unnecessary deaths.

2 glitches forced me to go back to previous saves, but the auto-save checkpoints are common and you can manually save to create your own checkpoints.

Overall great fun. Estimated value $5-$10, first playthrough took 15 hours.

A good game overall. Fun and action packed. Solid controls, like the upgrade system. The dialogue can be pretty funny at times. The story takes a while to get cooking, but is surprisingly good towards the end.

My only complaint is that the limited enemy selection does make stretches of the game repetitive, which knocks it down to an 8 out of 10 for me.

So this game comes with so much good, that it's a blasphemy to give it a 6/10. However, the designers missed a ton of opportunity here, and obviously went for the shortest, most optimal and minimal path to make money. On the side of constructive criticism - all that this game needs is a flowing level design, not cascading rooms. I mean - come on - first few hours you pass from forest into a town, from town into a forest, and go through a dozen of copy-pasted houses! Come on!

Fun for a few hours. But ultimately - i'll just go to the beach!

I hope turning the hilarious perverted old sensei into a try hard wannabe brat because you get triggered by real humor was worth alienating a large portion of the real Shadow Warrior's fan base.

But enough about my gripes regarding the destruction of a treasured old character in the name of a bad developer's sensitive feelings, lets talk about the actual game! First off, let me state that I'm immensely glad I played this at a friend's house first instead of outright buying it. Would've been a shame to lose over fifty bucks on something not worth five, but at least I learned my lesson after Civ: Beyond Earth.

Do you love linear corridor shooters, than look no further - the brand new shadow warrior(tm!) is your game! Gone are the confusing, beautiful maps of it's predecessor, where you had to actually use that noggin of yours sometimes to find a secret area, or figure out what to do next. No, Shadow Warrior is the every man's game. You can rest assured that even if your IQ borders on room temperature levels, you'll never be at a loss as to where to go next. Sure, the controls might be awful, but at least any idiot can figure them out. Where repetition is the name of the game, Shadow Warrior aims to excel in every area!

It took me three years to get over the simmering anguish caused by a company crapping all over a childhood love of mine to write this a review. But here it is. I give it a 1 because the swordplay is neat. The words I want to type to express how I feel about this 'sequel' (prequel, really, but I don't care) aren't polite enough to post here.

Shadow Warrior is a FPS made with that great 90s style. Lo Wang, the main character, starts the game trying to get a sword to his employer, Zilla, and after that he spends most of the game fighting demons with the help of a banned demon named Hoji. The plot is not the best I've seen, but is very good, and the acting is even better. I admit I spend the entire game looking for a twist, but the story is very straightforward, and after any chapter we want to play the next one just to discover another bit of it. Thumbs up.

The story mode is the main thing in the game. It took me about 14h to go through, and I've enjoyed every single bit.

    2- GAMEPLAY

The game plays great. I have some issues with the controls, but just because I'm not very skilled and I do not like when I have button combinations to trigger a move.

The swordplay is great, and I was always trying to use it just for the fun, despite having a lot of weapons that could make my life a bit easier. Being able to carry all weapons we can find was great, and the chance to upgrade them even better. It's funny that the sword destroys almost everything bt is not able to go through bambu. There're strong bambu in Japan.

We have 3 independent skill trees to unlock and upgrade abilities, but we never feel overpowered. New opponents are always a bit stronger or annoying than the previous one, and the new abilities are always welcome and needed.

The levels are long and kinda labirintish. We have no map, and sometimes we feel a bit lost. That's normal, and you always find the way out. Normally is the blinking door. There are a lot of secrets to find, and that gives you some replay ability. The fortune cookies where a lot of fun, and I was always looking for a new one, just to have a laugh reading them.

When a enemy locks on us the music always changes. It's nice to set the mood, but is always a warning to when we have enemies, since after we kill any horde, the music goes back to normal. I rather prefer to have to look for the enemies and be surprised when I see them.

There are some recycled sets, but there is no problem. The references to Serious Sam are obvious, and the gameplay and artstyle are very similar.

    3- CONCLUSION

This game is now at 34,99€ at Steam, and I would not pay that price for the game. I've bought it in a sale for under 5€, and for that price you have to try it.

Oooh, just the demon rabbits alone worth the 5€ tag.

Much more then I expected. It's a modern shooter (and kataner swinger + demonic power wielder) with nice scenery, fun gameplay, quite a good story and very strong voicing and humor. Played it on hard and that was rather challenging. Reloads take only a few seconds though. Bosses could have been more interesting and I suppose it could have used more variance in enemies and gameplay. ButMuch more then I expected. I have never played the original shadow warrior though I was raised in a Duke Nukem era. And I never heard of it as well which is strange.

However this game is great! It's almost perfect for what it tries to be. It's a little bit of Duke Nukem (original one) humor combined with great gameplay. The graphics is good, voice acting up to standard and as a shooter this game is awesome.

The story is acceptable - nothing fancy - but nothing fancy is needed. The upgrade system works really well. Weapons do feel different from each other and it makes sense using different ones on different situations. And the fighting with katana is just pure fun. Slashing through hordes of demons, watching their head and limbs fly.

Was very surprised when I got this game just how enjoyable it is.

Flying Wild Hog's Shadow Warrior reboot is a suburb singleplayer FPS, marrying the original game's ribald humor and chop-suey, Hong Kong bloodshed flavor with the fast-paced, challenging-but-fair new-old-school gameplay that has been on a slow rise, seen in game's like Serious Sam: BFE and Wild Hog's own Hard Reset. Much like those games, this game does an excellent job of making you feel like an unstoppable badass, a critical element of FPS that I have found sorely lacking in, say, the military shooter genre. This title sees a younger, but no less self-important Lo Wang pitted not only against his original nemesis, corporate magnate Orochi Zilla, but a new assortment of vicious demons, and he's got a new wisecracking sidekick who sees Wang for what he is: a hopeless nerd playing at being a street samurai. But while he is quick to dispense one-liners, this Lo Wang is a fay cry from the lecherous old master of the first game, and finds himself in the midst of a powerful and emotional struggle between ancient demon lords, and matures greatly as both a warrior and a person over the course of his adventure. Shadow Warrior seamlessly (More or less. The upgrade menus strike some as jarring interruptions) blends modern character progression, enemy dismemberment and bit of iron-sight aiming with movement-based, coverless shooter combat against large numbers of enemies, typical of its predecessor's day, weaving magic spells and special sword techniques into Lo Wang's already considerable arsenal of brutal firearms. The sword itself takes a much greater role then the first game and is great fun to use, rending the demons hordes into so many meat chunks. Scattered throughout the levels are a multitude of secret areas, including one lifted directly from the original game, much like the hidden Wolfenstein 3D levels in New Order and Old Blood, and you're met with a score screen at the end of the level, assessing your skills as a Shadow Warrior- I never scored particularly high, but it didn't stop me from loving the game from beginning to its surprisingly poignant ending. I eagerly look forward to playing the upcoming sequel. Expand

As with Flying Wild Hog’s previous title, Hard Reset (great, 4/5) SHADOW WARRIOR is a whole lot of riotous fun. It differs from Hard Reset in some areas, however, most notably with the variety of weapons and the more conventional upgrade system and skills tree. There’s also a stronger story, although it is a tad incoherent at times. There are some very cool cutscenes, but they’re used sparsely and never intrude but do help to flesh out the story. And there’s also plenty of amusing, deliberately cheesy, dialogue to enjoy. Graphically, SW is one of the most stunning games I’ve come across, and it also delivers some impressive physics. It’s not open world, as is de rigueur these days, but its linearity keeps the story, and the game progression, on the rails and never detracts from the fun. Hugely enjoyable and highly recommended. Overall Shadow Warrior is a rich fest of brilliant fun, cartoony graphics, and fairly fast paced shooting. Serious Sam and Doom fans, should buy it. The weapon mods are all good fun, so you get new ways to blast 'em.

The main character is slick and cool. He delivers his lines perfectly; acting credit too to the ghost. SW is a well set up game, that at first can seem a little over-coloured and difficult to warm to. Just a little game time and think you'll either love it, or it won't be your game type. Since some players seem to have moved away from single player shooters. It's style is sufficiently refreshing to make it really well memorable.

I am a Hard Reset fan too, so will be looking out for future titles in either series.

It looks great and is actually quite funny. Controls feels tight and the weapons are a blast.
One downside is that there are only 8-10 different enemy types, and that gets pretty old.

You're put in levels where you walk around until you get to an area. This area acts as arena because you have to kill all the enemies in it before you're allowed to move on to the next. These areas are never interesting or unique. They are just bald areas with boxes, building around the side, and corpses thrown around the ground. The best weapon by far is the Katana which I found to have very repetitive gameplay accompanying it. Each fight plays out the same and I never felt like I was making progress. I gain money to upgrade my weapons, skill points to upgrade abilities, and strange crystal things to upgrade powers. And yet, I never felt like the game was progressing. I personally feel that the game is highly overrated because it has a japanese setting and you can use a katana. It is simply a grind from slightly different arena to slightly different arena. That's one of the good things about this game that despite the modern look it feels pretty oldschool. No hand-holding, tough difficulty and loads of jokes. It even tries to do it's own story that is not entirely bad. I liked levels in the first part of the game quite a lot and it was shaping up to be an 8/10, but unfortunately by the final third, the game looses it's breath. I see there was a big inspiration drawn from Serious Sam, with total carnage of monsters everywhere and I must admit that it gets a bit boring after a while, not a huge fan of this over the top approach. Gameplay:Solid gunplay!Every weapon is useable, even the pistol youll get first.Every weapon can be upgraded, really nice. Some of these upgrades may be too strong, but thats not an issue in a game like this i think. There is a system in place thats rewards you with stars(or shurikens)for fights.I havent figured out if you get a high ranking for fast kills or when you deversify your kills.Find out for yourself. But its fun, youll get bonus karma that way.Karma is one of three ressources in the game you can use to upgrade you skills or weapons. You can use a sword and learn new techniques for it for example. You can learn ways to heal or protect yourselfe or passiv things like finding more money and so on.The progression is steady and enjoyable.

All in all this game is fun.The last 10 games ive played bored me so im glad this piece of joy came around the corner. If you can ignore the visuals youll get a game that entertains you for days with a solid gameplay and funny jokes.

This game is entertaining, with its comedy and references thrown from time to time (I assure you will LOL at the driving scene with Lo Wang). The bosses actually have like the same mechanic (shoot the glowing armour then shoot the gems) but there is always something different. The story is decent. It starts off like a comedy action movie, but as you progress it gets less funny and more serious, to the end where just...I'll stop right there and let you cry when you see it. Now since I've shown you the beauty of this game, excuse me I have to shout at the devs to make a sequel of it. Expand

Combine this with horribly unbalanced game play, poorly though through combat environments and you have a recipe for frustration not fun.

It's over the top freshman humor, with good mechanics both melee and shooting, slightly better than most callbacks to the old shoot em up/level up/shoot em up again fps games of ole.

Well written dialogue, a decent story, solid shooting, well done sound, incredible graphics and smooth game play make this a shooter that is worthy of the Shadow Warrior name as a reboot and if you like shooters this is one you should pick up.

TL;DNR: 8.5: A humorous over the top shooter, tons of loot, hidden secrets, decent story, great action and solid game play with beautiful graphics make this a shooter for those with a sense of humor and desire for lots of combat. Sound is great, soundtrack is fitting and there is never a dull moment.

Technology/engine: 9: super smooth execution although a number of loading screens that are placed in such a way as to not be annoying and keeps the graphical fidelity high and controls responsive.

AI: 8: Serviceable but a bit predictable but when the individual AIs of the mobs get mixed it gets intense and is enjoyable.

Graphics: 10: Gorgeous sets, great character models, wonderful animations, great cut scenes and great use of 2D cut scenes for memories. Flying Hog deserves high marks for the graphics used in this game.

Sound: 8: Sound effects are well done but occasional source to reception issues can be found in the game that prevent you from spotting the source at a longer distance. Otherwise its a solid ambient soundscape that creates immersion and adds to the game.

Soundtrack: 9: Great music throughout, I especially liked the unnerving heavy metal on the appearance of the black rabbit - one of the funniest and weirdly frightening moments that was totally unexpected in the game.

Voice acting: 9: Solid cheesy delivery and poignant when needed or appropriate.

    Crafting: N/A

Customization: 9: Customization includes various powers, skills and weapon customization all of which are rewarding and make a difference in the game.

Game play systems: 9: Really well mixed variety of weapons and abilities and the game scales with a difficulty spike if you are just ripping through. A number of the fights almost feel unfair until you find a technique to deal with the situation and the tools are always there.

Controls: 8: Slightly awkward controls that are occasionally unresponsive or do something other than what was intended - ie D-D-RMB is supposed to heal you but will occasionally perform the RMB function of the weapon - which can kill you of course. Perhaps when it comes out for consoles it will function better (although I hate to play shooters on console - prefer mouse and keyboard). Other than that it functions well.

Story: 9: I was surprised at the quality of the story, the great use of humor and the still poignant tale that is weaved into over the top violence and silliness that really, somehow, works well.

    Multiplayer: N/A

Also don't make your rig look more powerful than it is because if you run this game on too high of settings you will get extreme frame drop issues. Not so difficult of a game , ALSO if you treat this game like COD then you are going to die multiple times. It is a very good game but compared to painkiller or Serious Sam this is the inferior game, but for the price on steam it is worth the money. Enjoy and also ignore the negative scores because the issues that are brought up are by: the game runs bad (thinking their computer is better than it is) , Hard difficultly (playing it like its cod on a difficulty for players who have beaten it many times) or the simple fact that they say its gets boring and the guns are not that good which these are both true in the first hour. so don't let that turn you away. I suggest playing the demo to see if its your cup of tea or not because everyone's entitled to their own opinion Unless the opinion is illogical. thought I would clear up these scores. ENJOY! Expand

The joy, the action, the massacre is actually comparable to the 1997 Shadow Warrior. The game is fast, smooth and feels perfect. Some great weapon and character upgrades (and also some less interesting), good looking graphics and fun character models. So the following nitpicks are far from game-breaking, but noticeable.

When talking about fast paced FPS games from the 90's I don't care about cut-scenes and storylines in general (unless they would be very original and compelling, or really fun) and I'm not exactly in need of a snarky companion while killing bad guys. Both story and characters have been well executed and everything is fully skippable if you so desire, but the story itself hasn't got a lot of depth or originality to offer, really. Still, I guess you could have a much much worse companion than Hoji.
The biggest con though would be the level design, when compared to the original. It's much more linear and not as huge and maze-like, and consequently there's not as much sense of freedom. I want to be able to backtrack from start to the end and back again, but the game explicitly does not let you do so. Also there are tons of locations where it clearly looks like you can go somewhere, except for those infamous invisible walls. There's still quite some explorational fun to be had, just not as complicated or with as much freedom as the original.

But man, does the game look good and man are that sword and its powers satisfying to use. Nothing of the points of criticism takes away any of that and neither did it stop me from grinning like a maniac most of the time. This is by far one of my favorite modern FPS games and I would heartily recommend it to anyone and everyone. As long as they enjoy flying limbs and tons of blood.

Aside from that, this game is definitely worth buying as its a throw back to older games.

The sword play is fun and satisfying - dismembering demons seems more cathartic than smashing robots back into the scrap they were made from. The guns are the industry standards, the innovation we've seen previously is gone but I used the sword about 80% of the time so I didn't get too bored of them, they just feel a bit token.

Each enemy is unique and requires fighting in it's own way and you'll fight them throughout the game. The little enemies from the start are still present at the end, just in larger quantities. this lends to the feeling of progression when you can effortlessly cleave through a horde who would have murdered you at the start.

There isn't much variation in level design - the temples, shipyard and lab may have different textures but the are put together the same way and you'll go through the same process in each.

Overall lots of fun to make lots of mess of lots of demons but nothing more; not long enough to over stay its welcome.

But I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I kept playing this one because it was actually fun, and even though I finished it a couple of days ago, I will definitely be playing it again. This game doesn't have the stupid "two guns at a time" restriction, or the lack of saved games that seem to be common in games these days. It has checkpoints AND quick saves, much like the Half-Life series. And unlike most FPS games, the sword is actually a useful weapon, rather than just being something you only use if you run out of ammo.

While this game is different from the original Shadow Warrior, there are some similarities, and some passing references to the original, some of them hidden in secret areas. Along the way, you pick up money, karma points, and ki crystals, which you can use to upgrade your weapons and abilities. There are special moves you can learn, which I was a little unsure about at first, because things like that usually make a game a little too complicated for my taste, but they kept those fairly simple.

The story line, while a little hard to follow at first, kept me interested. The game has 17 chapters, and most of them are pretty long. Early in the story, you pick up a demon sidekick, and the interaction between the two kept me laughing. The political incorrectness that was in the original is not present in this version, but there is a lot more violence and bad language. I had to chuckle when my character dropped an F-bomb after taking a huge amount of damage. Unlike a lot of the recent games, it isn't ridiculously difficult even on the easiest setting. In fact, the easiest setting was too easy, and I ended up restarting and playing on "normal" difficulty. That was about right for me. It didn't make it too easy, but also not too hard to make it frustrating, except when I came up against some of the tougher enemies.

The sword is extremely reliable for taking down multiple enemies in melee. It also heals you. So what can be done to make the player feel alive? Right, invulnerable enemies. Some invulnerable until you've killed all the trash, some invulnerable from the front. Bad game design? Old school!

Huge levels that are easy to get lost in? Old school! The one tiny problem is that halfway through the game it stops making sense, so when you're lost you keep asking yourself TWO questions - "Where do I go from here?" and "Why the cat did I even come here?". In a certain level you also get complete darkness for free. And, of course, miles and miles of identical graveyard with identical houses, some of which have a lock on the door. And some doors will magically open once you've killed everything (even if you have no idea where that everything is stuck due to some AI glitch).

Weapons? Well... There's the sword and there are several fartguns. You can upgrade them but their destructive power stays quite meh. But sometimes you have to fight a boss. Solution! You get infinitely respawning ammunition to compensate for the power of your fartguns.

The process is a cycle. Enter a room. Have the door lock itself behind you. Kill everything. Run around the room trying to activate every object in sight. Kill something that got stuck somewhere. Run around the room again, this time some door or console might actually activate.

This is all very oldschool and very sad.

Duke Nukem Forever, for many, was a disappointment in that many hoped that it would stay the course of what FPS used to entail: gratuitous, unapologetic, fast paced gore and action. But for the new reboot of Shadow Warrior, being the more "eastern" cousin of Duke Nukem truly shines in that it redeems what makes FPS great with all the credentials of it being made in 2013. The graphics are completely stunning, not only for the purpose of the aesthetic but even beautifully done with the gore and action too. Melee combat, for FPS, usually always tied into being used as a last ditch effort. But not here. The Katana will probably be the most handy weapon out there, and it's the first one you get! There are a lot of combinations to the weapon that can apply heavy damage and kills, but the combos are frustratingly set on the movement keys and require some wonky movement in order to use them. Second, while the firepower can, at times work for the most part, seem quite underpowered when compared to the Katana. But even then, every gun you use has a satisfying punch to it, and the shotgun is especially of that case when you can unload every shell point blank into quivering demons. As many of the professional critics state, level design is somewhat weak as it usually involved complex corridors followed by arena-sized areas, rinse and repeat. Sometimes the level design can shine between both context and combat orientation, like "You Should See the Other Guy", or generally the chapters involving the shipyard. The Demons, or the general enemies are at the most times competent but usually suffer from clipping errors with items around them, so they can often try to chase you from a corner. In terms of what they can do is another story, as they can evolve and be enraged to greater bring strain to the player. The story is fairly decent and potent for a game that involves gratuitous violence, with a likable chemistry between the main character, Lo Wang, and his demon pal, Hoji, webbing the downfall of the shadow realm and how the sword and Hoji are tied to it. Also, for a FPS, we also get to see a lot of character building too with Lo Wang, from being a sneery, egotistic japanese 'american', to being a full blown, sympathetic professional with the wisdom and charisma of a true master. I didn't really set my sights on Flying Wild Hog before, but with their continued devotion to bring the S back in FPS really makes me feel they are the Id or 3DRealms of our generation. Overall, this game will melt your brain with fun, being fun loving and never tiring to blow demons back to kingdom come, keeping the tradition of secrets and shadow warrior's quotable one-liners, but best of all, making what is FPS, FPS! The combat is as satisfying as it is responsive and the katana's hit detection is probably the best i've ever seen in a video game (however special abilities are difficult to use at first), there is no weapon that you feel you won't like simply due to the fact that all of them have niche roles. The plot is interesting as well making mindless killing actually seem like your doing something meaningful however i won't talk too much about it due to spoilers. The game also has a surprisingly good sense of (especially considering the fact that the main character's name is essentially a penis joke). Lastly the world is absolutely beautiful (albeit it's no columbia from bioshock infinite)

Dispite all of that however, the game has a few game breaking AI glitches (like enemies hiding behind cover forever in a place the player can't reach) that make it impossible to advance due to the "kill everything to advance" system that only works if it's well placed in games like castle crashers. Also as i mentoned earlier the abilities are hard to use at first due to minor control issues and the exploration can get pretty boring when you just want to kill everything in sight but there's nothing for you to kill. Another thing to note is the unbareable load times, it's worse than dead rising 2 in this respect.

Overall i'd reccomend this game to anyone who likes good stories, mindless killing, non-serious games and good humour but can tolerate a few downsides that prevent this game being perfect

Finally! A single-player shooter managing to provide decent fun without relying on crappy stealth/horror mechanisms or ridiculous pseudo-realism.

It's by no means perfect, not even close. Both the environments and the ennemies lack variety. The level design and graphics, though quite decent, are nothing to write home about. One could say the same thing about weapons and powers. But

But in the end, it's nervous, frantic, the slashing gameplay is efficient and satisfyingly impactful, the story is surprisingly motivating and the whole thing ends up being just plain fun. Well done!

Now the reluctant hero must become legend through a masterful combination of gun, blade, magic and wit to uncover the truth behind the demonic invasion and banish evil back into the darkness. A great revival of an old, crazy game and a very pleasant, fast FPS providing many hours of enthusiastic mouse torture.

In some cases, the content detracts enough from an underwhelming element in a game... This is that kind of game... Sure, the environments are a little repetitive, but I'm having far too much fun to care.
    Cheer up try-hards, it's a game not a job.

I can not believe that this game came out. This is the best oldschool game. Lately it has become fashionable to make "scraps" from the games. This is one of the rare, full games over the last 5 years.

I am a huge fan of first person slasher games. I would list them all, but I don't think that is appropriate for this review. In any case, when I seen this swordplay game available for pre-order, it was a must-buy for me.

...So why was I so rushed and eager to end the game? I felt like there was really little to do, that it was extremely linear, and that it had some of the most repetitive and monotonous combat I have played recently.
I cannot deny the quality points of the game, but I expect a whole lot more depth from games I spend 40 bucks on. This game offers nothing other than moving from point A to point B while mindlessly hacking at hordes of similar enemies, and the combat is not even very impressive.

I give this game a 7/10 for its decent performance at delivering a polished generic slasher game, but remove another point because of its lack of content for its price.

Fantastic game. Throws you back to the way FPS used to be.

Story? Yeah, it's there, but it's not the key point, you can read a book if you want story. But the chaos, the utter chaos destruction and visual prowess this game offers within the story it does have, is utterly phenomenal. This game absolutely does not hold your hand. I signed up to Metacritic to write this review, I feel this strongly about this game. I was so excited for this game but ended up being extremely disappointed. As primarily a FPS PC gamer and fan of the original Duke 3d and Shadow Warrior when they were first released, this is a poor recreation. I dare say Duke Nukem Forever was a more loyal sequel to Duke3d than this is to Shadow Warrior.I signed up to Metacritic to write this review, I feel this strongly about this game. Lo Wang in this game is not likable, his jokes are rarely funny, the demon/almost satanic theme is horrible and there are bugs galore. Instead of a "baseball wrong, man with four balls cannot walk" we get a fortune cookie that says "there is only wang". WTF! This is only a single example but I could go on for an hour about how this game is completely inferior to the original. If you are in to horror type FPS games I could see you liking this game for what it is and not for a Shadow Warrior remake.

I did enjoy Hard Reset as a FYI and I do think the sword combat is good in this game but all the other faults make this a definite pass. Instead of solid combat with an equal opportunity to use guns and the sword, this game forces you to use the sword for everything along with the lame sword powers. Half the time you fight your character is dancing around as you try to remember movement combinations to activate the super sword powers. Oh my word. If Steam had the ability to gift used games I would give this away, I dont think I can play it anymore honestly.

This is just old-fashioned action. Combat is a bit monotonous, but funny. Ranged combat is a bit useless, rushed the game with my katana and it was really bloody and funny. The humour of this game is what makes it so interesting. really reminded me of 80s movies.

The game appears to have that cringe-worthy western ability of confusing Chinese and Japanese culture, but as you progress through the game, wading through Wang and Confucius jokes, you start to get the feeling it is all intentional and very tongue in cheek.
It is all very frivolous and funny but in the background, a very sad and tragic story is revealed. Very, very well done.
You get a few guns and weapons but the real star of the game is your katana. This has to be some of the best sword play mechanics I have ever come across. Dare I even say it holds the game together.
The enemies don't change much and the basic of the game remain the same throughout, but the levels are nicely designed and it does allows for some exploration.
I really felt that by the end, the game had gone a few chapters too long, but it was certainly a very fun ride.
A very, very good budget title. If you enjoy sword fights, get this one.

Another surprise for me this year. After Gunslinger reinventing wild west shooters, now this game introduces the best melee combat in a shooter.

You will not regret playing this game, and you can easily clock in 20hours. Lots of funny moments, comments, good graphics but not heavy on your machine, good music, and very very very satisfying gameplay.

Fantastic game! Brings Oldschool back to life with new graphics and some of the best sword play ever in any game.. The story even gets good at later lvls.. And don't listen to the ''reviewers'' the fact that you need secrets to upgrade your character and keys to progress is not a bad thing.. this is not a CoD audience they don't need their hand held the entire time.. FANTASTIC GAME

This game is great, a REAL old school shooter (what Duke Nukem Forever should have been). I think sword combat has never been so fun before in a FPS game and I can't think of any important drawback. without entering in details (for example: many times, on melee combat, you die because the enviroment is "excessively explosive" so to say.).
    To stay short, highly recomended!

I respect what this game tries to be, but the graphics are a bit outdated for the time of its release. Additionally, the loading screens and slight frame drops during heavy action doesn't help. I would have loved to see this game produced on a higher-end game engine. The violence is great, but not SOF worthy.

Lo Wang is hilarious and I really like the combo system in place for doing special moves while your sword is out. The storyline is cheesy but it fits the personality of Wang perfectly, especially when you find out after listening to "The Touch" and joining in as well that you are to offer money for a blade.

I prefer waiting some time before writing a review since things change with updates. So here's my opinion about the game:

    - If you played the first game, soon will you realize that the katana is incredible. You may use it 90% of time. Guns are also strong, but monsters close the gap fast changing weapons is pretty simple, what makes the game flow well

    - The graphics are great. They fixed many fps losses, and the game runs a lot smoother than when released. Ambients have a good level of detail, as well as your weapons and the monsters. Things flash here and there, a lot of fire too

    - You can upgrade your weapons, choose the skills you want and upgrade them the way you prefer, and also choose lots of passive effects to become stronger, or find more gold/ammo

    - The story is interesting. It seems like a puzzle, you get a piece here and there, and things make sense in the end. I think this idea was not well made, I felt really lost at some points, but finishing the game explained everything, and I also watched some cutscenes again to fully understand the situation

In the end, inexpensive game, good quality, and worth playing (13 hours campaign here if you are wondering)

Shadow Warrior is highly 90’s in a very good way. Pace is fast, health kits are in, guns are powerful, action is great, puns are bad and there is lot of flying blood and boy parts. The letdown is level design: they are too bland. [Nov 2013]
