A spiced-up oldschool shooter with tons of stuff to kill. What's not to like?

It ain't the most complicated and nuanced game ever created that's for sure. Nevertheless you can sum up Serious Sam III in one word. FUN. Many games can be clever, engrossing and have amazing attention to detail but they aren't exactly fun. Sam on the other hand, delivers fun by the bucketload! Play it.

I'm a Sam fan, but I can say without any no bias, that Serious Sam 3 is THEEE most successful and fun shoot them up FPS (TPS) I had played in ages. Dropping those generic hide and poke "strategical" shooter games that had been swarming the market for years, the return of Serious Sam sure brings fresh air to the current gamming society. Facing millions of enemies and pwn them with full pack of uniquely designed heavy weapons that are capable of massive destruction, the action contained in SS3 top all other FPS games plus together. The higher difficulty in this game not only make this game more challenging, also more fun -- diffferent characteristics of the enemies, different properties of the guns, and the strategies to deal with different scenarios are all exploited in the higher difficulties, resulting the ultimate gameplay experience and pleasure. The graphics in this game is purely amazing, the textures and art style completely portray the sceneries at their most impressive state, and of course, great heavy metal music goes with great battles, pure awesomness. You cannot go wrong with this game. It provides endless hours of non stop gut exploding action. Although sometimes you wish the enemies just stopped coming at you, the game is still amazing. Its Serious Sam for Christ sake. Sam stone can kick duke nukem's ass.

Definitely worth getting in the Steam Summer Sale! Grab this if you haven't yet. This game is not for newbies who want a rails shooter to hand-hold them throughout, which is what the official critics seem to need.

Oh Sam, where did you go so wrong? This game is suffering from a serious identity crisis. This game is suffering from a serious identity crisis. Serious Sam has always been (and is supposed to be) about fighting off monstrous waves of enemies, and being slaughtered should you let your guard down for a second. THIS game, however, is more about throwing 2 or 3 enemies at you at a time, as some sort of patience test. Fighting seemingly endless spurts of baddies for 15 minutes is incredibly boring, and unbelievably frustrating. I even turned the difficulty up, but the only things that seemed different at all were the humongous fights, which were borderline-impossible. ************************ The guns are utterly uninspiring, as we have seen every single one of them in every single other Serious Sam game, with the exception of the mostly useless "leash" thing. Sam has a new melee attack that will kill any enemy roughly Sam's size or smaller in one hit, from as far away as 10 feet, which is incredibly lame. What's the danger in letting an enemy get close when you can instantaneously one-hit-kill them? ************************ Sound design in this game is HORRENDOUS. Don't get me wrong, the sound effects are what I expected, and when the metal music gets pumping during hectic fights, it can be addicting. However, when you are facing the little tiny groups of 2 enemies at a time, the music will switch from laid-back to frantic over and over and over and over and over. Also, when enemies make noises, they will sound like they're right next to you, even if they're literally 200 feet away. I guess it makes sense though, since shotgun enemies will be able to tag you from literally the other side of the level. ********************************* Level design is good, and the graphics are pretty awesome. The DX11 tessellation in particular was noticeable. The only complaint I have is that character animation is absolutely horrible. Watching any character speak reminded me of 2003-era games. ************************** It seems like every first person shooter to come out in the past decade has had an incredibly annoying last level. This game takes the cake, though. In fact, this game runs in its nephew's birthday party naked, screaming profanities, slaps the cake right out of everyone's hands, and sets the house on fire. I have never EVER seen a more annoying last level. It is so horrendously, hideously, mind-blowingly repetitive and annoying, that I seriously had to FORCE myself to fire it back up and finish it. I now wish I hadn't, since the boss fight is an even more ridiculous chore. First thing I did after finishing the game is pound the escape key to get back to the menu, exit the game, and click "delete." Didn't even watch the ending cinematic. *********************************** This game is a LOT of fun in multiplayer, and there are a few moments in single player that were actually "fun," but they were few and far between, and I spent most of the gameplay time annoyed. As someone who has played and beaten ALL of the other Serious Sam games (both regular and HD versions, as well as Random Encounter and DD), I cannot recommend this game to anyone, unless it is expressly for multiplayer. This is the video game equivalent of that cheerleader you knew in college: Gorgeous to look at and seems like a blast, but in reality she's frustrating as hell, and all you want is out. Expand

This game is awesome, and there are many reasons. The game takes what worked in the previous 2 games, amplified, fixed and in addition added different situations and "bit" more emphasis on the "adventure" part. Translation: we even get a bit of plot! First of all, the weapons: there are many and, unlike what I saw in the previous games, now most of the weapons are actually very different: the best example to me was the rifle (with 40 rounds magazine) and the minigun (no recharging), since they were basically the same thing before (they even used the same ammunition), but now they have different ammunitions and just work differently. Even the melee weapons (the sledge hammer) is a good tactical weapon now! So in this regard, the weapons are extremely good, varied, and add more tactical situations. Next is the gameplay, which I was surprised: I noticed many type of situations and not just linear levels like the previous ones. Yes, it's still linear, but I liked how they tried to change the areas by adding few details (like avoiding chainguns, collecting items, and escaping from a "flying" enemy. And yes, there were similar zones in the previous games too, but in here I found it more varied. Again. Third point, is the enemies: Wow, I liked how many are kinda fresh (like the Khnum), and how can you kill some of them: you can kill them in many ways and, strangely, other tactics will actually work! Seeing Kleers coming? Grab the hammer and smack their bones! The rocketeer is wasting tons of your rockets? Weaken him and grab his head! Those bulls are giving you a hard time? Use the mutilator and cut their heads off! Those giants red mechs are so annoying...attach a C4 on their body and goodbye problems! While in the predecessors the killing was basically the same, with rare exceptions, in here any tactic can almost work! That's, again, variation! With all of this said, I have mainly 3 big flaws on this game that, unfortunately, it's present from the previous games too: the gameplay is varied, yes, but the levels aren't: the theme is the same. FOR THE ENTIRE GAME. I understand this game is connected to egypt (I bet it's because of the plot, but I never followed the entire plot of the series), but I really couldn't stand how the levels were basically on the same setting: pyramids, egyptian ruins, egyptian streets, ruins of egyptians civilisation...It's probably unfair, yes, but I'd loved more variation on the setting, instead of the same egyptian theme. Also, even though I mentioned a plot, I...kinda didn't get it properly and so...my guess is that the plot is barely noticeable? Still it's good though, since the other games almost had no story...I think? And for the third flaw, the online is barely good. I don't care much about online gaming if the single player is fun (which it is), but I barely find people playing online and that's sad because it's always a good way to spend some time, eventually. With that said, this game is still awesome: to me this is how new generation shooters should be: fun to play, varied, with some weird and ironic dialogues and have a good combination of old and new school fps. In other words, this is how a FPS should change! Expand

Played it all the way through, but really it was a grind. Dull, boring, none of the glee and fun that the first two in the series brought us. The method of killing the final boss was ridiculous, and every other boss was dull and boring. The level design was also fairly uninspired.

I've read the previous reviews and I've come to the conclusion they just suck, lol. Granted the first 3-4 levels are relatively slow and weapons are limited. Honestly though if your decent at old-school fps normal is really not that difficult. Serious difficulty can be rage inducing.

If you only give the game 1-2 hours of your time, you would be forgiven for thinking it's just another CoD clone; a military helicopter crashes and Sam spends most of his time running through ruined cities and dark corridors killing mostly humanoid enemies and spiders. In fact, it isn't until right at the end of the fifth level, where a boss fight takes place in a wide open area, that things truly get going (note: the first levels are CONSIDERABLY shorter than the latter ones so that, although this is level 5 out of 12, I'd say it's about 1/5 or 1/4 of the way through the game)

By the time you're around level 7/8, you'll realise that you really are playing a Serious Sam game again. The hordes are massive, the environments expansive, and the gameplay mental, fast and fun. Sure, the dialogue is stupid, Sam's quips sound like you've heard them many times already, and the story is, well, nonexistant. But who cares? The game is massive fun, cutscenes are rare and short and, if this is important to you, the game looks truly GORGEOUS if you have the power to max out the settings.

As one would expect from a Serious Sam game, the controls are tight, enemy attacks are plentiful but dodgeable, and (at least on higher difficulties) requires some serious ammo and health management - this is NOT a dumb, pure reflex shooter.

So I urge you, if you judged this game based on the first few hours, give it another go and at least play until you reach the pyramid. It may not be up there with First/Second Encounter, but it's close, and it's about time we get a shooter without regenerating health, a two-weapon limit and useless AI partners that completely ruin the experience. This is just you, on your own, against hordes of the most mental enemies ever seen. It's been a long time since a game has put such a big grin on my face.

New weapons like C4 bricks are loads of fun. I read some people complaining that you have to reload certain weapons and you can aim down the sights on a few guns as well. Really? It may sound weird to be able to do these things in a Serious Sam game, but CroTeam made it work. Melee synch kills add a new dimension to combat and are not a "press E to win" feature. They simply provide a new way to play should you choose to use them. Entering synch kills leaves you vulnerable, so you cannot spam them and expect to do well. The first few levels of the game are insultingly easy to any Serious Sam fan and feel more like something out of Call of Duty. Once you get past these nauseating moments, the game really picks up and remains true to the franchise. Multiplayer co-op is a blast, but the high player count can cause some systems performance issues. The high player count also makes the difficulty unpleasantly inconsistent. This game is reasonably priced, doesn't have any ridiculous DLC, is loads of fun, and hearkens back to a time when FPS games were about intense action instead of following an NPC and watching it play the game for you. The weapons are well balanced as are the enemies and their vast variety. If you've never played a Serious Sam game before, this is a great place to start since it is a prequel to the previous games. If you're a returning fan, don't let the first few levels turn you off to what is a genuinely enjoyable game. Expand

Meelee executions in Serious Sam? Greatly accomplished and goes well with the game.
The missions are well introduced along with the weapons and enemies, you'll discover a lot of new things while you move on.
Most achievements are quiet easy to unlock but there are some that require you to take more time.
You'll love the remake of old enemies and you'll also get to know new ones.

I loved the work behind the game: All the music is superb as usual, the light and shadows techniques are from another dimension, cool shaders, cool physics, magnificient graphics...the overall game engine is PERFECT and the best of all is that it has been highly optimized to run on all modern/modest computers.

Thanks Croteam for this piece of art work. I'm a programmer and the Serious Engine is my favourite one since the 1.0 version and i like very much what you've accomplished with it so far. I'm also a big fan of the SS game as many others here. SS3 is what we all wanted for breakfast.

Are they even aware of the numerous complaints about the problem with modern shooters these days (although I love Battlefield 3 and plenty of other shooters these days)? If a game that so much RESEMBLES a classic shooter comes out, they have to make up problems to nitpick in their silly reviews. Now, let's talk about the game, as I am not reviewing the REVIEWERS here. Serious Sam 3 is... a completely awesome game with lush graphics, jaw dropping moments, and seriously awesome seriously serious battles. It paces itself just right too, giving you room to breathe right before a huge battle pops up suddenly! This game in a nutshell is all of our classic gaming sensibilities done just right for the modern market! Reloading helps to give combat more intensity, and forces you to switch weapons on the fly. Health powerups like medkits are often scarce, opting for an abundance of +1 health stimpacks instead. Better gore helps to make each fight seriously more seriously fun than ever before. Seriously seriously!! Okay enough with the "seriously" jokes. The only major problem is, once again, a lack of real optimization for PC despite what Croteam says. The game's performance is VERY erratic for many gamers, with little or no explanation for why it runs poorly by the developers themselves. They say it runs "well" for them, but they don't understand that not all of us have fancy processors or PCs. Silly Croteam. RAGE and Battlefield 3 look better but run very well for me, which says a lot about Serious Sam 3 in terms of the performance. However, that's the only real issue I have. Other minor complaints are somewhat repetitive area designs, reused sound effects clearly from the glory days of classic Serious Sam, and incrediblly hard to find secret areas. Everything else, however, is perfectly fine and worth every penny in your pocket! Now go play Serious Sam 3, and gib some baddies! Expand

Croteam have gone to absurd lengths over the last six years to meticulously research everything that should and should not be included in order to maintain the series' draws, but also to keep it progressing and evolving. The game, while being an immensely enjoyable 15+ hour kill-fest, also works to subvert the norms of the first-person shooter genre. It laments the state of FPS, asking how it became to be about storyline, scripted events and underdeveloped RPG elements -- and does this by providing nothing but fast-paced, gory action. It is more retrospectively old-school than even the other games in the series, and comes with gameplay (nay, *gunplay*) unmatched by any video game currently on the market. Add to this a stunning graphics engine, and you have the best game of 2011. Perhaps the public simply isn't ready for such a bold step in video gaming? No matter; I was ready for one, and I got it. This is back to basics gaming at its best. I think the developers have kept it simple and similar to the previous outings which I also own.
Pretty amazing graphics and textures enhance the gameplay as well.
Definitely one of my best game purchases. I'm 16 hours in and haven't even tried out the co-op and multi-player yet as am enjoying the single player game so much

If you can stomach the first few levels, the game does pick up quite quickly. By the time you leave the war-ravaged city setting and reach the pyramid, it's back to what you expect - giant, open areas where wave after wave of monsters come at you, interspersed with occasional dark and slightly creepy tunnels and tombs.

And my God, is it refreshing to play a shooter that lets you quicksave anytime, doesn't have checkpoints, has healthpacks and armor instead of regenerating health, and lets you carry all your guns at the same time.

I am only deducting a point because of the incredibly boring first few hours, and the lack of silliness that was present in the first two games - no giggling health pills that run away from you, no kamikaze bush, and no 'secret bloodbath' where picking up a health +1 triggers some giant robots surrounding you in a tiny courtyard. The gameplay, though, is 100% there.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I heard that Croteam are gonna release Serious Sam 3 in this year I was like "OH MAN! It's awesome!". I was really enjoying the first two games of Sam's adventures, but Serious Sam 2 was just not like it should be. After wasting a couple of hours in Serious Sam HD, I felt that this series can still be alive. So I bought Serious Sam 3 immediately on Steam. When I launched the game, I saw pretty well done intro that explained me whole situation. It appears that Serious Sam 3: BFE is a prequel to the First Encounter, which means I must travel in time and save my planet! Whole idea of making prequel is really cool, but I'll talk about that later. So, after starting a game, I saw Sam, and a couple of soldiers in a helicopter. They were talking that they must secure professor Stain who might know how to run Time Lock. First I was like "WTF!?", then I was like "So they don't even know how to turn it on?", but then I was like "Oh yea, it's prequel! I'll find out!". While we are on topic - story in Serious Sam 3 is really cool! While it's not so important in these games, it's really cool to have some sort of more advanced storyline in that series. During whole game, we are gonna find out a lot of interesting things, like that Sam wasn't the main character who had to go to the Time Lock! There was group of soldier who had to do that, but because of Sam's adventures, situation on our planet is messed up, and he is the only one who can make it. Some people were talking that game can be really bad because of some sort of pieces from modern shooter. I was kinda scared about that too, because I saw a couple videos from beta version of the game - gameplay wasn't really promising. What new we got in here, from these modern shooters? Reloading in most guns, sprinting, and iron sights. Trust me - it's great that game have them! It seems that CroTeam tried to bring some players to their game - I don't know if it worked, but these elements from moder shooters are mixing great with Serious Sam game. I can't believe that too! Reloading just add hardcore, and thanks to that you must switch weapons more often. Sprinting allows you to run faster in areas when you don't need to fight (Sam still walks normal, like he always was), or to take cover (but honestly, in Serious Sam game?). Iron Sights reduces recoil, and it helps you to aim at monsters while they are in big group, or to eliminate one by one. It's also really helpful if you are fighting with group of zombies for example. Excluding it, game didn't change at all for me. We still have some big guns, really cool monsters and a lot of humor! While we are talking about that what did changed - a lot of monsters and weapons are from old, good first Serious Sam games. We will still be able to encounter Biomechanoids, or Arachnoids, or Kleers or Kamikazes (AAAAAAAHHHHHHH!. They slightly did changed, and you will see that, but at least, we got the taste of the past! Of course we got a lot of new enemies, like Scrapjack, Khnum, And what's most important - we still got a big army of monsters heading your way! Only in few moments at beginning of the game I felt alone - not for long of course! Game otherwise have some cool improvements, like melee kills for example. We can twist off Scrapjack head and kiss him while he is weak, or we can rip of Kleer's skull! It's really useful, and makes you fill better (you can also throw the piece you got from each monster!). About weapons... We still got Rocket Launcher, shotguns, minigus, but we got new assault rifle, Devastator, mutilator, and more. There are a lot of tools of destruction! Serious Sam 3 also serves us a good piece of multiplayer. Coop modes up to 16 players can cause head explosion, same as Versus modes. There are not a LOT of servers, but if you can find yourself one, you will have a great time. Game is powered on Serious Engine 3.5, successor to the Serious Engine 3, which was the engine for Serious Sam HD games. It's not Crysis, but game still looks good. Not great, but good. Models are pretty well done, same as animations. Only a few of them are just awfull (like third person ones). The environment is really well done, we can destroy a lot of things as usual! The best part of engine is what allows me to fight 200 enemies at once without freezing. That doesn't means that game can't drop FPSs, but developers are fixing performance in patches. Game sounds as it should like. We got some old sounds, like kamikaze scream, or same Sam's voice (which is GREAT!). Music is not so addictive as it was and I remember only a couple of tracks during maps. We also got a couple of new... you know.... "WWAAAAR!" tracks. These are really cool. To the finish... Serious Sam 3 is good game. It' not the best game of the year, but it's a great successor to the Serious Sam 2, and other titles from series. It's not yet polished, but still good. NO COVER, ALL MEN! Serious Sam 3 is a ridiculously fun old school shooter. It is a really great playing experience which some modern shooters don't compare to. While it can be difficult at times it is not difficult to the point where you cannot get past an objective and since it is only 40 dollars it is a must buy.

I haven't been able to connect to the Multiplayer aspect, but the Single Player manages to hold its weight alone in typical Serious Sam fashion. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was expecting more of a Serious Sam HD kind of overhaul/remake, which keeps everything in tact. But unfortunately SSHD kept literally EVERYTHING in tact, including the levels and all gameplay elements. It is fun and quite exciting to see the classics in '00 getting graphic overhaul.

SS3 BFE however, added unnecessary things like reloading weapons, sprinting and iron sights. Why? CoD I guess. SS games wouldn't need any of those, and it just added more frustrations than fun. Imagine huge mob of beheaded kamikaze running towards you, then you're out of shotgun bullets. That's "cheap difficulty" for me, and certainly... not fun. Also iron sights? Older SS didn't need any of those, why adding such thing? Sprinting... ew.

If we wanted those things, we would've played CoD instead. But SS is SS. And its root are unique, therefore it should've try to keep the elements that makes the game unique, keep unique... a straighforward, huge amount of endless monsters-massacre.

I think what would've made SS BFE much more "proper" sequel is better graphic (check. BFE is beautiful), more consistent enemy themes (more jumbled and mess in this one), better, tighter pacing (the game is kinda boring at start, without any weapons in your hands, just the sledgehammer, then it suddenly throws in the numerous giant scorpions in your face), also much more "balanced" and well-thought/designed weapons (serious cannon & serious bomb?)

Also, BFE unfortunately took a more "realistic" approach to its visuals. It's not bad, but the way previous SS was very videogame-ish, with sprinkles covering the floating power-ups, etc, things like that. Again, if we wanted realism we would've fetched another "realism wannabe" FPS.

I never fancied on jokes in SS, they all lame. And the story? Meh. SS never needed any proper stories. Animations in this game is kinda unpolished, visibile only in the cutscenes tho (which is not really a critical element of SS), in game, I never noticed any bad quality of the animations, since I'm busy doing killing the monsters.

Nevertheless, the game is brutal, featuring very satisfying gore, tons of enemies and those "oh sh1t" moments.

And multiplayer? Oh boy! SS Deathmatch really shines here, unlike those CoD team deathmatches. It's like Quake in modern era, but FAAAAARR better than quake. Think of it as Quake Deathmatch with steroids. Seriously, people should try this game's MP rather than the same old, same old MW3 deathmatches.

Final words : Best $40 I've ever spent. Buy this game, stop feeding A*tivision and E*, they got tons of cash from Co* and B* fanbois already. And don't you think you deserve something more awesome than those military sim/realism wannabees?

Croteam deserve the credit for such awesome game. So. GET. THIS. GAME... ASAP.

Let's get this out first: I am a HUGE Serious Sam fan. I have played all the canon games, and still pop them in today. They were just flat out, appalling fun. That was it. No stupid storylines with twists and turns, just you, guns, and monsters. These games were masterpieces. Serious Sam 2 was ok, but just wasn't quite the sequel we all expected it to be.

Then, that fateful day. The day Serious Sam 3 was announced. I s*** my pants. "A new Serious Sam game? Holy crap", I thought. I couldn't believe it. My dreams of a sequel had came true. I couldn't wait.

Then I bought it. When I started, My first thought was "holy crap these graphics are awesome". This is truly a game for a monster PC, which I happen to own. As I was drooling over the screen, I heard the sound, the sound of death: AAAAAAAAAAH! I just felt nostalgia soar through me. It was a wonderful feeling! As I continued to play, however, I started to dislike the design of the level. It resembled Modern Warfare's style, and this was my first sign that SS3 was trying to be something it shouldn't. The further I played into the game, the more repetitive the gameplay and level design got. There is a level were you slowly navigate dark, foggy, tombs, fighting the same enemy over and over. What happened? Serious Sam games would take longer to become repetitive, like several playthroughs. SS3 got boring around the fourth level.

My honest opinion is that SS3 is good. It definitely isn't the sequel I wanted, but it isn't bad either. The monster redesigns are awesome, and the secrets are sure to give some laughs. Remove all the repetition, and this would be an awesome game.

*I know People will disagree in some areas, but remember this is my honest opinion. I dont totally dislike the game. Ill probably turn it on every now and then. If you love this game in every way, then go play, and I hope you have fun

You exit a secret passage under what used to be the Sphinx, shotgun in hand with a fair amount of shells. Your health isn't looking too bad either at 89%. You notice there is a large amount of extra health, armour and ammo in front of you. You can hear masses of headless fellows, reanimated skeletons and robot walkers teleporting within your vicinity.

This is when Serious Sam 3: BFE really starts. All of those levels set in urban environments were only there to ease in people who weren't used to this breed of shooter, the kind of shooter that could pass as a modern Smash TV or Robotron 2084 if the camera was placed at a top-down perspective. No regenerating health, little cover (that doesn't last long), and swarms of monsters that want you dead. At the same time you're given a fighting chance with a variety of weapons such as the stock standard pistol, shotgun, rocket launcher and assault rifle, as well as less conventional weapons like a sledgehammer (great when surrounded by lesser enemies in close range), the devastator (a kind of sniper grenade launcher that is fun to use) and the almighty cannon. This cannon isn't some sort of science fiction-ey cannon, this is the kind of that would look at home on a pirate ship. The satisfaction gained from firing this bastard of a thing through a herd of Kleers is immense. Another great thing about these weapons is that you can carry all of these at once, as opposed to two or three in most shooters these days.

It's Possibly the best shooter in the last ... 6-7 years? Requires and rewards skill with the mouse, it's fast, it's unrelenting in its pace and its difficulty on Serious is seriously brutal. Loads of ways to go about doing everything, lots of interesting weapons, seems quite long too, even if some reviews slagged it for being short, my steam timer says I played it 7 hours now and I'm only on the "Unearthing the Sun" level. If the buildup continues like it has so far, I just can't wait to get further into the game and see more, then play it again in coop with a friend or two, maybe try out 16 player coop at the next LAN. The game starts out slow as a direct parody of the Call of Duty / Battlefield / Medal of Honor games that have gotten so popular recently, complete with "blurry staring at hands"-scene. It then goes on in a series of levels that give you only a pistol, a sledgehammer, and your fists to fight off an increasing amount of baddies. The whole thing looks much like any other modern shooter; a bombed out middle eastern city. But while you're running around aiming down the sights of your pistol/assault rifle, and pumping out a few with your shotgun, the absurdity just increases evermore. It looks like Call of Duty: Yet Another Game, but you're shooting some far out monster, and the whole thing is just golden. Sam gets a lot of calls from someone in an earpiece, who he constantly tells to just shut up and then continues with his own thing, acting like the Duke Nukem we'd all hoped to see return in DNF. It's a hilarious quip at the current trend of high profile shooters where you're always relegated to being some grunt who just follows the Follow blurb over one of the NPCs and waits patiently for them to open doors.

The graphics are quite good, everything is sharp and pretty, and the game runs reasonably well too (on a HD5870 + X4 965 I get 30-40 fps most the time at "max" settings without antialiasing at 2560x1440), and everything is quite top-of-the-line for a game that's developed by an independent studio in Croatia.

Bad parts I noticed were that the AI has some issues with close quarters, but most of the game takes place in rather open areas so it doesn't become too evident. The level design is ... weird. It's basically a return to Serious Sam 1 again, where you have short interludes between large arena style fights. Only this time the arenas are littered with ruins that blow up spectacularly (this is good), but I miss more indoor variety levels. Maybe they'll pop up later, but so far the parts that are around are not very indoor'ish. But of course, that's not really what you expect from SS, but hey, they could expand a little :-) Reloading and the inability to do so while sprinting, and the incessant need to do it all the time on the pumpaction shotgun and the assaultrifle is annoying. I wish they'd removed that, as it does take quite a while to get through the game on Serious difficulty. Maybe had it as an option or give upgrades later on that would enable infinite shooting. It would've been better if you could reload while sprinting though. But hey, can't have everything I guess. Gotta relearn how to move again I guess :p since all the last many games have been spent crouching in a single spot while shooting pop-up target baddies.

Conclusion: Really fun game. Graphics are great, voiceacting is fun, story is total nonsense, locations are spectacular, guns are great and rewarding to use, difficulty is way up there on the higher ones, but it doesn't become frustrating like 1 hit 1 death shots from invisible enemies. You can always hear what's around you and you can move to avoid/kill it if you're clever enough and fast enough.

Been an FPS fan since I played Wolfenstein 3D the first time in 1992, and this, this is what FPS are all about to me. Highly recommended.

Last but not least, the serious engine, really good imho, with bloom, hdr and post-processing effects implemented in the best way. Also useful is the spotlight for ammo/health. The sarcasm of the protagonist is in every sentence he speaks...and it's also appreciable and funny the new ''ANECA''.
In the end, the best SS since now! If you love the fps and you hate scripts, this is your game...a game of 15+ hrs, not an interactive-movie of about 3 hrs like most of fps today!

Serious Sam 3 feels a little bit bit dissapointing - as it is not perfect as I hoped it to be. Still, the game offers unparalleled joy of blasting dozens of foes into pieces.

Serious Sam 3 feels a little bit bit dissapointing - as it is not perfect as I hoped it to be. Still, the game offers unparalleled joy of blasting dozens of foes into pieces.

While modern times got us used to shooters on rails, enforced storyline and support of teammates who can complete the game on their own, Serious Sam poses a real challenge and features nothing but fast-paced action. This is a first person shooter where all you do is run and shoot. While it may not satisfy Skyrim or Minecraft players, it is an obligatory position for any hardcore shooter fan. Game is good at what it is supposed to be and does not distract from its core.

Although the concept of shooting reckless monsters is older than genre itself, compared to its first episode, Serious Sam has gone mature. Enemies are no longer cartoony fools, there is someting scary in their design. Health pick-ups don't float anymore in the air, their placement is logical and realistic.Behaviour of foes also has been altered - soldiers can crouch to take cover, bigger foes strafe to dodge upcoming rockets. It does not, however, spoil the game's concept "No cover, all man". It's just harder and doesn't allow player to stop for a moment. This game will force you to strafe in unimaginable ways, swap weapons every few seconds, aim at surrounding monsters and never feel safe. Don't expect the comfort of hiding behind an obstacle and waiting for your health to regenerate. Taking excessive damage causes death - a thing not obvious in modern games.New players may find it impossible to win at diffuculty beyond normal. You will reload game many times at hottest moments just to impove your aim and strategy every time, until the challenge is beaten.Oh yes, the strategy. This 'silly, brainless' shooter involves more skill and intelligence than recent realistic blockbusters. Every enemy is different and needs alternate approach, every weapon has unique advantages, while the ammo is scarce.

Weapons, your tools of destruction, ask for separate paragraph. At the beginning you will be playing with familiar handgun, shotgun and assault riffle, which work as usual. An uncommon addition is mighty sledgehammer - close-range weapon which effectively splashes minor enemies in no-time. New thing in SS3 are melee attacks that can quickly gib single enemies - but won't help against the horde.

Big hordes need big guns - you will enjoy every new toy which is significantly more powerful than previous weapons and allow to take evergrowing amounts of enemies, which also become towering beasts. But he game starts off relatively slowly, with only a bunch of foes on a screen, located in the slums of Cairo. As you progress further, the areas gradualy become wide-open and can hold over a hundred of enemies in a single battle - there is a couple of levels that contain over a THOUSAND of enemies rach. To take them down, at then end you are given enermous cannon, which shoots huge iron balls that literally roll through enemy ranks. That is something you can witness in no other FPS and makes Serious Sam series outstanding. Still, the gameplay remains smooth and balanced - Croteam just knows how to manage the chaos.

As yet I didn't mention the storyline - in fact, it's just an addition. Sam 'Serious' Stone is send to future war-torn Egypt to save the world with a help of ancient artifacts. It's not necessarily deep or sophisticated, but the plot and short cinematics give a sense to all this endless mayhem. The presence of actual storyline is a significant progress compared to previous games, yet you can ignore it completely just to focus on next group of angry monsters.

Some things have gone due to mature style shift. No more power-ups, no more rooms with warped gravity or completely ridiculous secrets. As a reward, every new kind of monster gives unique gameplay experience - just as wall-climbing spiders or cave demos jumping out of darkness. This is still enjoyable, but just quite different. As a long-time fan, I missed that craziness, though.

The game's engine is impressive - it features an absurd amount of tunable options, which scale well to pretty every modern PC. You can adjust everything to your liking, by setting vivid colors or hippie blood (sic!). Graphics can stand up to the very best competitors, such as Crysis or Modern Warfare. Still, Serious Engine 3.5 can handle dozens of enemies without fps drop. It couldn't, however, handle empty, narrow streets of Cairo on my machine.

Oh right, there are some issues I didn't like. The game, despite heaving 9 gameplay modes, features very little maps for them. What's the point of trying survival if there are only two locations for it?Another problem is AI - while monsters are not asked for exceptional intelligence, they get stuck at corners from time to time, which spoils the fun.

The game still can offer more joy than any other title around. If only you like to shoot things, don't hesitate - get Serious Sam 3.

There were great improvement to combat in this game. I like the open environments, the new weapon set, and the new game engine. The monster designs are cooler than ever. Now, the campaign is fun, but it's not the best part. Go online and try your hand at some co-op Campaign, or my favorite, co-op Survival. This game has a great atmosphere for co-op. Pros and cons, shall we?

Pros: -Improvement in every older game element across the board
    -Excellent new designs
    -Super fun online
    -Replay value out the wazoo
-Much harder than previous Sam games

    Cons:
-Only two Survival maps. This mode is very fun, and the two maps offered can keep me busy for a couple of hours, but there should still be... more. It would be nice if there were an update or content pack that added a few maps.
-Digital Deluxe was not worth the extra ten bucks. Sorry, but the player models and sniper scope aren't that cool, and the soundtrack and bonus art, while good, are not enough to justify the extra $10 I spent. Save yourself some money and just get the base game.

Overall, a great game. I agree with anyone who pretty much said that this is what Duke Nukem Forever should have been, and I'd say that it's well worth investing in. If you're unsure, wait until the price drops to $30 on Steam. I think it's worth at least that.

I welcome sprinting with open arms. It lets you traverse the massive landscapes much quicker. People need to get over themselves regarding these new gameplay additions. I'm tired of people screaming the term "CoDified" and whatnot. This game is HARDLY like CoD. Just because it has iron sights on TWO guns doesn't mean it's trying to be like CoD.

Anyway, the humor is toned down quite a bit, at least compared to SS2. That's not to say it's not funny though. I found the crappy dialog and the poor choreography to be brilliantly done, which sounds really contradicting, but that's exactly why I find it hilarious. It's like a parody of itself. It's different from Croteam's usual formula, but I think it's that way on purpose.

Anyway, not much else to say. It plays and feels like the other Sam games. I guess the optimization for low-end systems could be a little bit better. I basically run it maxed out on a dated machine because I'm a graphics glutton, but it runs ok in single player. I have to put it on low settings when I play online though, otherwise it lags too much. I still get some stuttering though. Hopefully Croteam will release a patch or two that includes some performance fixes.

I have no idea what these critics are thinking. This game is AMAZING. It's one of those games that comes out and isn't the most popular, but you just can't put it down after you start playing. Coming from Serious Sam 2, this definitely holds up to my expectations, and exceeds them. 16 player co-op looks awesome, I just need to round enough people up to play it. On a technical note, I'm very impressed by the Serious Engine 3.5. For example, they've managed to do shadows the right way, something that Skyrim couldn't deliver. By this I mean in the foreground of Skyrim, the shadows are distorted and low quality, where on Serious Sam they are sharp and crisp. Well done Croteam! Expand

Don't let anybody tell you different, Serious Sam 3: BFE truly delivers on every expectation this fan wanted. Massive hordes? Check. Familiar enemies, and new memorable ones? Check. Difficult? Massive hordes? Check. Familiar enemies, and new memorable ones? Check. Difficult? You bet. Serious Sam 3 succeeds in being a throwback to the golden age of shooters as promised. Though it brings some contemporary FPS features such as iron sights, and sprinting, these are arguably more acceptable. Make no mistake, Croteam let those be the only contemporary elements, opting to keep the more unacceptable ones such as regenerating health, out of the formula.

The result is an old-school shooter, with a touch of modern spice, but not enough to completely overpower the taste with that stale generic feeling that your standard military FPS games have today. Croteam has created a perfect example of what FPS games should be like in innovation, and game play. Graphically, BFE is one of the most impressive video game visuals of 2011. Even the most hardened system may have trouble running with everything at maximum with the amount of action on screen. These "professional" reviewers who critique the visuals for the game are obviously blind, as the game's textures, and models are some of the best in 2011. In sounds, BFE also stands flawless. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing, once again created by the same composer who did the previous games. The score is fantastic, fitting, memorable. If you like Serious Sam music, you'll love this addition as well.

In closing.. BFE? A masterpiece created by Croteam that definitely deserved to be picked up if you've been longing for an FPS that stays true to what the genre should be like. And to any self-respecting Serious Sam fan out there; this game is for you.

seriously? a 69/100? People are giving revivals of classic shooters such as Duke Nukem Forever and Serious Sam 3: BFE scores they don't deserve. I've never even played earlier versions of these games because I was just a baby when Duke Nukem Forever was announced. But seeing the scores of those games, upsets me. People just don't give games the scores they deserve. So I'm giving this a 11/10.

what happened to this game? the animations are horrible... especially the melee ones (check 3rd person view) and the strafe ones... even QUAKE 3 does strafe animations correctly in EVERY SINGLE MODEL (and yes, there are a lot of them)

its very funny how croteam decided every single charater should wear sunglasses to cover the lack of facial expression

also why sam model has a pistol but he can only use the one he founds on the floor?

I don't understand why Sam likes Hellfire... is the ugliest girl in the world, I know he is in the middle of the desert and there are no other girls... but she looks like a lesbian or something. also she says sam has a "mini gun"?? WTF? I though duke nukem was the one full on steroids that shrinked his dâ

This is the best SHOOTER of the last years! Pure fun, madness and epic. It feels as if I was sent into the past, in golden age of PC shooters, when the genre of fps was not poisoned by console gayplay. Thank you, Croteam, for this feast of the soul!

Only two critic reviews so far? Seriously? This to me is pretty firm evidence that game review sites are nothing more than puppies being fed dollar signs by so-called "big buck" game publishers to deliver on a perpetual basis unrealistically hyped-up and base-less reviews of games which are so thought-less and pathetic that they would not be able to sell on their own otherwise. Serious Sam 3 has got to be one of the best games of the year and Croteam deserves so much more than this. This is GOTY content we are looking at. Two very big thumbs up to Croteam for having the nerve to stick to the true, solid and proven roots of classic first person shooting in an era where everyone else is trying to make their games more "realistic" and more "story" and "character" driven. Croteam has delivered to us a reminder of what the true value of fun in gaming is all about. Serious Sam 3 is fun and this to me is the single most important aspect of any game I wish to play. Sure, it may be seen as being overly simplistic to some... after all, Serious Sam 3 is pretty much a "go from Point-A to Point-B and kill everything in between Point-A and Point-B" type of game. But if it works and you are having one heck of an awesome time then Croteam has succeeded where others have failed. Thank you Croteam for this epic masterpiece. Expand

A True PC Shooter, its been a long time
Masterpiece, nothing more, nothing less, this is what all hardcore PC games that loved the likes of Doom and Quake should buy instantly, support this game, we need more classic PC shooters like this and less console shooters like Bad Company 3 and Call of Duty 14.
Ignore all the reviews from Official sites like IGN, they have no idea what they are

Hold down the trigger, Run backward, Repeat! Long campaign, Awesome graphic, no health generation, NO COVER, lots of enemies, big BOSSES, awesome story, no bug in game, ...! This is a REAL game for ONLY real OLD gamers!! Whoever says this game is boring, just shooting enemies and ... , he/she is not a real gamer!

This game is the opposite of modern FPS. Enemies attack in hordes and the levels are labyrinths. Serious Sam 3: BFE is a game from 90's made with the tools of the 21st century. [March 2012]

Serious Sam 3: BFE is a game worth checking out, especially if you were a fan of old iD Software titles like Doom or Wolfenstein, or the even the Serious Sam series itself. If you're a gamer who's only played modern FPS titles, you'd still do well to see what Serious Sam 3 has to offer. It's more unique nowadays, and it's polished just enough to be an enjoyable experience.

A worthy descendant of the original Serious Sam titles, it's a FPS that deviates from the standards of today's games: its difficulty level is high, it challenges your reflexes, it's utterly addictive and it's honest, as it delivers on what it promises. [February 2012]
