SS 3 disappointed me. Disappointed me, because the beginning of the game and first couple of levels are awful new-wave shooting crap. I want my Sam on big opened space where he can shoot cannon balls and rockets. This game ruins this at the beginning giving us boring CoD crap kind of shooting. And it was really fun in the first couple of hours. Maybe even too fun (as the endless enemies thrown at the player was a fresh concept for me).
Can then, somebody explain to me, why this game failed to be engaging really soon?
My own explanation is - because all of those reasons. Quake had frantic action, but it didn't feel repetitive. Half-life also had epic environments, but they weren't only for background. The weapons, well they are just "meh".

And I would kind want to continue playing, but I know exactly what will happen - I'll go to a big open space and I'll have to shoot the hell out of hundreds of the same enemies that I already know and probably fight an occasional boss. Again, and again, and again... Only if the enemies weren't that much and time-consuming to shoot them all - I would probably want to see all the scenery remaining.

Initially, the game looks like something out of a modern shooter: nearly monochromatic color-scheme, out of control bloom/HDR effects, cramped spaces, and no weapons available except those requiring reloading. This portion of the game annoyingly features many hit-scan (or non-projectile) enemies that love to snipe you from afar with ridiculous accuracy (sometimes with a shotgun). The game eventually opens up and begins to feel like the classics it takes inspiration from, but it takes *far* too long and doesn't happen nearly often enough. You spend too much time bumbling around in cramped, pitch-black areas, while being required to kill enemies and flip tiny switches that are hard to see with nothing but a narrow-coned flashlight. Made worse by enemies that love to swipe you and then run off before you can respond. You also commonly end up in areas where you have to run back and forth across the same terrain, collecting keys (or key like objects) before youâ Expand

Oh Sam, where did you go so wrong? This game is suffering from a serious identity crisis. This game is suffering from a serious identity crisis. Serious Sam has always been (and is supposed to be) about fighting off monstrous waves of enemies, and being slaughtered should you let your guard down for a second. THIS game, however, is more about throwing 2 or 3 enemies at you at a time, as some sort of patience test. Fighting seemingly endless spurts of baddies for 15 minutes is incredibly boring, and unbelievably frustrating. I even turned the difficulty up, but the only things that seemed different at all were the humongous fights, which were borderline-impossible. ************************ The guns are utterly uninspiring, as we have seen every single one of them in every single other Serious Sam game, with the exception of the mostly useless "leash" thing. Sam has a new melee attack that will kill any enemy roughly Sam's size or smaller in one hit, from as far away as 10 feet, which is incredibly lame. What's the danger in letting an enemy get close when you can instantaneously one-hit-kill them? ************************ Sound design in this game is HORRENDOUS. Don't get me wrong, the sound effects are what I expected, and when the metal music gets pumping during hectic fights, it can be addicting. However, when you are facing the little tiny groups of 2 enemies at a time, the music will switch from laid-back to frantic over and over and over and over and over. Also, when enemies make noises, they will sound like they're right next to you, even if they're literally 200 feet away. I guess it makes sense though, since shotgun enemies will be able to tag you from literally the other side of the level. ********************************* Level design is good, and the graphics are pretty awesome. The DX11 tessellation in particular was noticeable. The only complaint I have is that character animation is absolutely horrible. Watching any character speak reminded me of 2003-era games. ************************** It seems like every first person shooter to come out in the past decade has had an incredibly annoying last level. This game takes the cake, though. In fact, this game runs in its nephew's birthday party naked, screaming profanities, slaps the cake right out of everyone's hands, and sets the house on fire. I have never EVER seen a more annoying last level. It is so horrendously, hideously, mind-blowingly repetitive and annoying, that I seriously had to FORCE myself to fire it back up and finish it. I now wish I hadn't, since the boss fight is an even more ridiculous chore. First thing I did after finishing the game is pound the escape key to get back to the menu, exit the game, and click "delete." Didn't even watch the ending cinematic. *********************************** This game is a LOT of fun in multiplayer, and there are a few moments in single player that were actually "fun," but they were few and far between, and I spent most of the gameplay time annoyed. As someone who has played and beaten ALL of the other Serious Sam games (both regular and HD versions, as well as Random Encounter and DD), I cannot recommend this game to anyone, unless it is expressly for multiplayer. This is the video game equivalent of that cheerleader you knew in college: Gorgeous to look at and seems like a blast, but in reality she's frustrating as hell, and all you want is out. Expand

In the first battle there is an amazing moment where the SS character mocks the screaming of a suicide bomber and then about 100 avenging suicide bombers all can be heard coming in a huge wave over the hill. The humor in these moments is pitch perfect. Sadly the game doesn't really have the legs to outdo itself and lacks in longetivity, but certainly worth a playthrough or two...

THE GROT REVIEW CRITERIA: After a long time writing reviews like an anus, think its time to set a few bad habits straight: Stop insulting designers. Show some respect for the design process and getting games in circulation. Hence (1) No Red scores. (2) Game scores as follows: Bad Game 5/10. Poor Game 6/10. Mediocre Game: 7/10. Good Game 8/10. Great game 9/10. Stella Game 10/10. To get 10/10 it must be a game that can be (theoretically) play-able for 1000+ hours. Not only great but near endless fun. Games may be bad or poor but making them should earn respect. Thus even the worst POS will still be a 5/10. 0/10 no longer exists in my vocabulary. Yellow is the new red. Serious Sam 3 brings out FPS arena mechanics (such as fast gameplay and a lot of weapons) and tactic FPS mechanics (such as aiming and reload) and merges them into a fully and solid gameplay. In fact, this way allows the game to be liked by any FPS player (although 85% of the gameplay is arena-style). The single-player features a lot of enemies and very hard/adrenaline moments, all mixed with extremely cool metal music and appropriate environmental music themes. Finally, this is the game that features a solid plot, although not so deep, but which still contains some twists and, of course, Serious Sam's "epic" dialogues. The game is moddable and people can make extra contents such as extra missions and maps, multiplayer included. By the way, the multiplayer is just like the SS:HD remakes, which is cool. This makes the longevity very good. Graphically, the game is very good. The maps are very well structured and detailed, and there are a lot of excellent particles effects (for example, when you make dust, you see shadows which get filtered by it). Even the performance is good, infact, this is the only game that allowed me to play good graphics with full stable 30+ FPS. This is probably the only very good game that came out these years, I'm very happy with it. Technique (Avg{Graphics, performance}): 6+ (6.25); GamePlay: 7- (6.75); Plot: 6; Longevity: 6½ (6.5); Audio: 7. Avg: 6½. Bonus "innovative gameplay" (+0.5 (=7)). Rank: 7. Super!

Hordes of enemies to kill especially in the 2nd half of the game you get insane amounts thrown at you.
Sams Humorous dialogue, which made me laugh or at least amuse me most of the time.
Like that you can melee enemies and rip out their eyes, hearts and can use them as a weapon against other enemies.

I dislike that it can feel very repetitive and tiresome, especially the last level, it just dragged on and on.
It's easy to get lost and confused on lvls, I had to replay lvls just so I could beat it in half the time.

It's not trying to be modern or adopt conventions, rather bringing back a game which plays somewhat like Doom and almost identically to a game called Will Rock. Only gain health and ammo from glowing pickups, no cutscenes to interrupt the flow mid-level and minimal use of aiming down sights. And almost no story or much attention to make levels feel meaningful. And absolutely no attempt at realism. In Serious Sam 3, you get to fight a variety of enemies which are distinctly recognisable and because they come in unbelievably large volumes, and you can sprint ridiculously fast, the game achieves the most fundamental objective of an FPS: to make the action fast-paced and intense. The melee is satisfying, you get unlimited pistol ammo and the game mechanics are very solid. Controls are simple and satisfying. Simple things like changing the way your crosshair looks and disabling headbob and even the ability to switch seamlessly between first and third person view whilst in-game with the press of a button are all great additions. The environments are purposely out of proportion to give you room, so that's why the game allows you to have field of view of up to 120 degrees although one disadvantage of everything being so wide is that it's easy to get lost. Yet despite all the old-school gameplay and premise, Serious Sam 3 has great graphics (especially the lighting and blood effects), smooth framerate, minimal texture pop-in and a distinct style, because it uses Serious Engine 3 (and not something generic like Unreal Engine 3). You can also play both the survival modes and campaign in co-op locally with a friend, which almost no other PC shooters do. That said, old school shooters don't work very well with controller. All in all though, Serious Sam 3 is a pleasant change from the more complex modern shooter. It takes everything back to basics yet still delivers an exciting FPS experience. My main complaint is that it's not really gripping because there's nothing which makes you want to continue playing. Of course, games like this naturally get repetitive since they're so minimalistic in their content. To get an idea of what this game is, think of Battlefield 3 as a whole and imagine the exact opposite. Then you get Serious Sam 3. Two very different games, two very different motives. If you hate modern shooters, you'll love this game. If you're a console gamer, you'll hate this. Expand

This is a guideline for how to properly review games. Many reviewers like to get a “feel” for a game, and arbitrarily give a game a score that they believe it deserves. This results in wildly different scores between different reviewers, and vastly different scores between similar games. This guideline addresses these problems and scores games fairly and consistently. This guideline also gives scores that are usually similar to the metacritic score.

The review score is based out of 10 points. There are no “half” or 0.5 increments. It is impossible to have a score above 10 or below 0. The review score will change as the game gets new dlc, drops in price, or if more secrets are found through the game increasing its appeal.

The scoring is split into 6 sections. The first five sections can add a possible 2 points to the final score. The first 5 sections are Single Player/Multi Player, Gameplay, Visuals/Story, Accessibility/Longevity, and Pricing.

Notice that 3 of these sections have two parts. These particular sections will be scored based on the stronger part of the game of the two. For example, if a game has a lousy single player campaign, but an excellent multiplayer component, that section will be based solely on the multiplayer as if the single player did not exist. This allows games to be based on their own merits, as many unnecessary features are shoehorned into video games by publishers to reach a “feature quota”. Games that excel in both areas of a section don’t receive should be noted in the written review, but cannot increase the score past 2 in that section. However, it can be taken into account in the final section

The final section can add 1, add 0, or subtract 1 to the final score. This final section is the “wildcard” section. This section is for how the reviewer “feels” about the game, but limits this only to this section, rather than the entire 10 point review. This section can include any positive or negative point that was not covered in the previous 5 sections.

As much as I love how chaotic it can be at times, Serious Sam 3 is a messy videogame whose various components were lazily patched together with a broken hammer.

I really enjoy this game, it goes back to the golden age of shooters in terms of game-play which i like, and
co-operative game-play is a blast, however multiplayer content is lacking with only a few maps and weapon balance is non existent. overall a great game for a great price.

I preordered this game back in the day because I loved the franchise, but never got around to finishing it. I gave up very close to the end of the game. I recently went through the entirety of the main campaign with a friend in co-op, so I will now write out my review.

Being a diehard fan of the Serious Sam series and playing the the First and Second Encounters to death, Before the First Encounter was a bit of a leap in a different direction. Croteam was clearly influenced by Call of Duty, and it is really evident. A more modern story, sprinting, instant kills, etc. Personally, I feel like that was a bad decision.

BFE got a casual shooter makeover, and that can negatively influence your opinion of the game if you were hoping to play more of the classic Quake-like high octane gameplay. The game can feel clunky and not all that fluid to play, and the increase in movement speed may feel unnatural to some. The removal of the jump sound took away the definitive "Sam feel" (which many complained about but Croteam ignored), and some of the guns just don't feel the same.

The game has a strong focus on swarming you with waves like the survival modes in zombie games, which gets tiring since they're overdone. You don't have much of a choice of arsenal either, since the swarming never gives you a chance to use any weaker weapons. You get forced to use the same few high firepower guns.

Despite how hardcore of a fan I was with the series, I just couldn't bring myself to finish BFE the first time, and I ended up uninstalling near the end. Although I have finished it now, the last boss was anticlimactic with how easy and scripted it was. There are a good number of progression-inhibiting bugs, and performance could be better during intense scenes. BFE was bleeding edge in the graphics department at the time, which is a plus, but that's really all you could admire about it.

The gameplay is glorified and gimmicky, and the maps don't seem interesting to explore since there aren't that many meaningful secrets. After the first few maps, you're stuck in the desert going through recycled versions of the same map over and over. The game isn't that long if you rush through it on a lower difficulty (higher ones make it more tedious). You could get it done in a few hours in multiplayer if efficient.

In my opinion, I don't think I could bring myself to play through it more than once, unlike TFE and TSE, which I easily played through hundreds of times. BFE really was just a graphics showcase at the time of its release (and in a way, a Crysis-like benchmark). The game feels like a knockoff of its own franchise, which is ironic. It is still worth a play if you can get it cheap on sale, but I wouldn't set too high expectations for it.

I give BFE a borderline 7 because of how disappointed I was with its execution.

Реалистичность игре 50 на 50. Сюжет как всегда в серии. Геймплей... Не очень весёлый из-за реализма.

Enemies look a lot more intimidating compared to the older games where they looked goofy as hell which I admire.
The OST still good, sprinting was a nice addition, but reloading and iron sights...why?
TFE/TSE only had the revolvers and the double barrel shotgun reloading but still. Hitscan enemies which dries your health quick as hell. Also bride witch is possible to must unfair enemy

Also bride witch is possible to must unfair enemy to face in a FPS game, stuns you mid air while a horde of kleers, kamikazes, biomechanoids etc. are after you. Good one Croteam.

It's nice to see that Croteam is back to basics. But The First Encounter is still the best game in the series.

This game is the opposite of modern FPS. Enemies attack in hordes and the levels are labyrinths. Serious Sam 3: BFE is a game from 90's made with the tools of the 21st century. [March 2012]

Serious Sam 3: BFE is a game worth checking out, especially if you were a fan of old iD Software titles like Doom or Wolfenstein, or the even the Serious Sam series itself. If you're a gamer who's only played modern FPS titles, you'd still do well to see what Serious Sam 3 has to offer. It's more unique nowadays, and it's polished just enough to be an enjoyable experience.

A worthy descendant of the original Serious Sam titles, it's a FPS that deviates from the standards of today's games: its difficulty level is high, it challenges your reflexes, it's utterly addictive and it's honest, as it delivers on what it promises. [February 2012]
