To be honest this game was ok, but i think it should have stayed as a dlc not a whole new game! This game is just saints row the third with superpowers, this means there is no need for cars because you can just fly! Its fun if you have never played a saints row game before but for people who have it just adds superpowers!

Saints Row IV is not bad, instead it's just a disappointment. This game is almost like a texture pack or skin for saints row 3. The game is still in Steelport, not literally, virtually in Steelport. As is shown in the trailers, there are super powers in this game, they're kind of broken. You get super speed running an hour or so into the game, so from that point on there is basically no reason to have a car, and upgrades to running and jumping also make it so there's not really a benefit to have a plane or helicopter either.

As far as their implementation in combat, they are ridiculous, like in the last game, you can do take downs (run at someone right click on PC), they are lethal on your run of the mill cops/gang members/zin. In this game, you run so fast that you can take out an entire group, 5+, that you can physically take down them all before they can really even take a shot at you. In 3, you were limited in take downs by your sprint meter, and until your respect level got really, really high up.In this you get unlimited sprint fairly early in.
Instead of making them better or smarter fighters, instead they just spam them, literally opening portal. to bring in large groups of zin. This does make the combat harder (more like longer), but if you play on harder mode, it makes fighting with a gun basically useless, unless you want to take the time to take cover from the battalion of zin taking potshots at you, it's much faster to just use take downs.

The story is okay, not anything spectacular though, I'm avoiding spoilers so I can't really get into depth. While it's not bad, it certainly feels sequel-y (Although saints row 3 is a sequel also, it went in a completely different direction than 2 or 1 did.)

I've had one major glitch, to avoid spoilers I'll be vague. I had to get out a place with a door that was slowly closing, and the glitch meant that the doors closed to quickly. I did a quick search and found that the solution was changing the detail level, don't ask why but it worked. This occurred around a month after release.

This game also has it so when you want to upgrade powers you collect 'glitches', there are literally over 1000 in the entire game, and searching for them isn't hard but it is very, very tedious.

This is a mediocre game overall, but following saints row the third, it's just so disappointing. If you're a real fan of the series or just the third and are still interested, wait until it's on sale. I haven't yet finished the main storyline and I only play because I feel like I have to finish it, although I don't really want to.

Saints Row is a franchise that perfectly fits the description of "Trying way too hard to be hip, edgy, and funny" to entertain the bottom of the social pyramid to make lots of money. Every saints row game comes out a few months prior to a Rockstar release and almost always guarantees positive reviews.

It's not a bad game, It's just stupid, and some people enjoy stupid games.

Saint's Row IV. Many words can describe this game but only one rings true for it's entirety. Stupid. Now stupid may be an ugly word, but in the context I am using it, it means complete and utter brilliance. Volition know they're game isn't serious, and they embrace it. The aliens, the weapons, the Nolan North voice option, all of these factor into the game's complete self criticism. It's as if Volition said "Saint's Row is stupid, lets make it even more stupid" and it worked brilliantly.

Enough praise for now, let's get to the game itself. Saint's Row has undoubtedly improved itself since it's last outing. The Third was by no means a bad game, but Saint's Row IV improves upon it astronomically. More guns, more vehicles, more mini-games, more stupidity and who could forget the super powers, which are the most interesting part of this new game. The game play has been significantly improved and made more challenging, the player now has to collect Unreal style health pick-ups seeing as the health regeneration feature has been reduced greatly. This adds an extra layer depth to the previously simple fighting mechanic, it also makes it's game play so much more intense than games like Call of Duty or GTA V. The new blast mechanics force the player to strategize, balancing their now limited health and usually taking on five or more enemies at once can be a real challenge so when you see your freeze blast recharge fully you'll breathe a sigh of relief and shatter some New mini games have been introduced, along with an Olympic medal style ranking system which encourages player to replay until they earn gold.

But the main, crowning feature of this game, are it's superpowers. Not just the powers themselves but the nooks and crannies that come with aforementioned powers. The world now has much more verticality, collectibles are on the 22nd story of a building or in between massive industrial chimneys. A massive new upgrade tree, along with the Saint's standard upgrade tree seen in every game. With each data cluster, the player is that little bit closer to unlocking a desired superpower or additional element for their blast power. Finally, it's plain and simple fun just to fly around the city of Steelport.

The narrative side is where this game has completely overdone the stupid. Aliens attack and the Saints are the only thing that can stop them. A lowly gang of gangbanger/celebrities/politicians etc etc, are now tasked with the protection of the human race. Sounds completely ridiculous, well that's because it is. It's also the most entertainment I've had since, well, Saint's Row 2. The characters are over the top, the jokes are at times subtle or extremely distasteful and in your face, but always make you laugh. To be frank, this game perfects what gaming should be. It's cut all ties to reality and sanity, it's taken the "Who the Hell wants to plays a game for realism" approach. This game makes you feel like a complete badass, and there's nothing wrong with that. The writing is witty and would make any middle aged man chuckle with glee thanks to an absolute tonne of 80s references (play thermonuclear war). At the same time, any immature little brat like myself would find most jokes hilarious. This game isn't afraid to outright steal from other games, fans of Mass Effect might notice a certain cameo appearance and even a wannabe Normandy, inFamous and Prototype fans will definitely see some obvious similarities. But it's all done with self awareness, Volition knew what they were doing, and even went so far as to extend the reach of their plagiarism. It is perfection.

Issues include some shoddy graphics as the game is still running on an older engine, but anyone who buys a game for graphics is as bad as someone buying a book for its cover. There are glitches, but they were relatively small and easy enough to handle. Some of the flying is hard to control when playing on PC, but works wonderfully with a controller.

In the end, Saint's Row IV is worth your money, time and effort. It's unparalleled obscurity and stupidity are only starting points for why you should play this game. It is an unforgettable experience, in the best way.

I will admit the combat is rather boring and unoriginal, but that's a problem with every Saints Row game anyways, and everyone loves Professor Genki! Everyone argues that Saints Row IV is utterly random and makes no logical sense in the series of Saints Row. Uh... like the other games weren't. For 50 bucks, I'd say it's worth it, but I honestly won't consider it a must-buy until it goes down to perhaps Skyrim's price, as once you complete everything, not much fun is to be had afterwards, even with co-op. A lot of people wish the game developers will go back to their main roots and try to go back to what Saints Row 2 and Saints Row was. I'm here to tell you that is not the case, nor ever will. I'm here to tell you that is not the case, nor ever will. Volition has taken a new step towards Sand Box games and tried to make "killing things" creative and fun. The introduction of Super-Powers in this game is awesome and something I had a TON of fun with. I think they introduced Super-Powers too early and I tended to use my Super Speed more then actually getting into a car. Which is really just a kick to the teeth the people who added the car customization's which is really cool.

Clothing and tattoos are pretty much the same in this game and they haven't introduced much new clothing which is disappointing but doesn't really affect the over all game play.

The story I found was much better then Saints Row 3 and I enjoyed it A LOT more then Saints Row 3. I wish though they haven't got rid of cribs you're only main crib is you're space ship you're crew stays in for the ENTIRE game.

If you wish to play a serious Sand-Box game then go play GTA but if you wan't to "kill things" in the most creative and fun way then play Saints Row 4. They completely steer away from comparison from the GTA franchise is which I think they were hoping for when they released Saints Row 3 and now Saints Row 4.

The references to Saints Row 1 and 2 is awesome and fun. I had a ton of fun playing those missions. Also bringing back Gat was an awesome choice made by the developers.

If you want to have fun killing your enemy's in the most creative way then I would recommend Saints Row 4.

First, this was actually an expansion for the third game that in the end became a game on its own: that is reason why it lacks a lot of innovation and it just doesn't do much new...but if people can still play CoD every year despise being the exact same, this game actually DOES things a lot better than you'd expect. First, the game got a lot better in the story: many old ones and some even new will really shine out in every moment..heck even the VILLAIN is great! Not only that, a lot of the dialogues, jokes, and writing in general just got way better, without mentioning lots of scenes with just pure random awesomeness (one word: "Haddaway"). For the game itself...it had some tweaks sure: the game now features more guns with more differences between them, with also more customization options on cars and also costumes (even though not as many as you'd think). The game unfortunely changes the colors of the game into a very darkish red, meaning that the old Steelport is long gone in here: It's not a big deal, but it is a worse sight for your eyes. And of course, we got superpowers...and this is why I also dislike this game much. Because the superpowers replaces every single type of transport. Sure, you can drive (we got some few new vehicles, both flying and cars. I didn't see any water ones though), but with the superpowers you can literally plane all over the place, from side to side, in a matter of seconds, without mentioning that you're flatout faster, more agile, and everything: cars are literally pointless in this game, and it defeats the purpose of being a "Free-roaming" game, since it's more like a super-hero game. I'm not saying that this is a flaw per se but, in a way, it's like playing GTA with noclip: it's so fun at first, but you'd still want to play all the game normally without so much strength. Also, missions got very varied this game, even if slightly, and most of them still consist on same objectives but you'll have to use a different method; we also have few new missions too, like the sprint missions, puzzles with super powers (like jumping platforms, telekinesis throw, etc), some old, like Genki's and Fraud (with super powers, it's WAY hilarious to play!). My only drawback is that a lot of these missions are just too simple and easy to complete, no point even giving us 3 medals since it's so easy to complete them. And lastly, my biggest problem which was also in the third game: it's way too repetitive in here and a lot of missions are just submissions (cracking the places are the most annoying too). Sure the good missionns are GOOD and you'll love to unlock everything but I felt a lot of missions being the same exact thing. In other words, as much as I loved this game, as much as I loved the passion put into this game (especially the fact that "one" character comes back, it shows how they cared for the fans. I guess?), I personally prefer Saints Row 3 for its simplicity. But is SR4 worth? Absolutely: it's a fun game and, surprise, games are made for having fun, and it hits the spot with some resevervation.
Has flaws, but also tons of fun in it, give it a try if you just want to relax and enjoy some silly comedy.

Bad things in this game are the super powers, I think powers ruined the game in a way (I liked SR3 way more) like driving any vehicle becomes a dumb idea 'cause you can just run and fly all the your way, I don't know I think powers took away more from the game than they added.
And also the secondary missions, boring and dumb.

What should've been a light parody or nod even, to the Matrix, turned out to be an exact ripoff of the movie. If the movie came out a year ago I would understand, but it came out in 1999, and been copied and parodied to absurdity long before this game came about. If it does nothing else, it makes you want to blow the dust off of your SR3 copy, and that's never a bad thing. Story progression aside this game is one that sticks with you for a while and has so much potential for simple mindless fun from the over-the-top guns to the insane powers. Not much else to say, the story is more "as it comes" and combat is nothing to write home about, but when it is all taken in it is a less serious Prototype that likes to mess around in just about everything it can.Staying power is limited and just as the insanity draws you in it starts to wear off but while the momentum is up it is one hell of a ride. The problem with critic's reviews, let's plays and general feedback for Saints Row The Third was that people raved about how "crazy" and madcap it was, and ignored that there was actually a pretty solid story there, and very much improved characters over those in Saints Row 2. I feel Volition really took that to heart unfortunately, and so what we have in Saints Row IV is all that insanity absolutely maxed out, with any story simply present to tie activities together.

The result is something that certainly feels a lot like those wacky SR3 DLC storylines (not surprising really, as the development for SR4 started off as a SR3 DLC) and not like a true Saints Row game. I know SR3 was criticised for the same (unfairly, in my opinion) but really any notion that this game has anything to do with street gangs vying for supremacy has been firmly thrown out of the window. What we have here is a game that is partly a spoof of Saints Row, and partly a spoof of Mass Effect, but does neither of those particularly well.

Where it does succeed is in the various activities (blazin', the various rift challenges, hotspots, fraud, etc.) which are either new or improved over their SR2/SR3 equivalents. A large proportion of the side quests in the game are just doing selected activities in groups; while understandable, this unfortunately means anyone who likes to explore activities in the open world is penalised in terms of story (such as it is) as these side quests skip the activities already completed.

Saints Row IV has also arguably taken another step down in difficulty, just as Saints Row The Third did over its predecessor. In co-op mode, the game will offer very little challenge even on hardcore difficulty for most players.

It's certainly not a bad game, in fact it's well worth the asking price, but in reality what you're getting here is a $60 piece of Saints Row The Third DLC, not something that truly continues the storyline and feel of the previous games. Anyone coming to SR4 without playing SR3 is missing out on a awful lot.

The game is particularly easy even on Hardcore, and I've only died about once or twice in actual combat (partly due to superpowers that make the game a cakewalk). The story is nonsensical but that's also it's charm, as the sharp tongued writing compliments it. The hubworld is kind of small (in my opinion) and everything feels artificial in a sense. The game was really fun at stages but also pretty boring for some parts.
Sometimes I had the feeling they tried to turn it from an open world game to a 3D platformer, making you climb massive towers or hitting a target after a jump right in the middle.
The super powers make driving around through the city in a car completely obsolete. I only entered a car twice during the whole game (except for the missions where you have to drive a car) just to realize that it is much easier and faster to super sprint to my desired location.

For the first hours into the game I was really tempted to just quit the game and not touch it again.
The scripted missions are great and the humor is delivered on the point. But after the perfect tutorial level it lasts pretty long until the same feeling comes up again. The pace only picks up after about 4-6 hours into the game.

The licensed music is good, especially when used as background music for the scripted missions it is used perfectly to underline the humor or tension. But as before, the music is not as well used as in Saint's Row III.

All of the character background stories from Part 1 up to Part 4 are recapped in the different "Sidekick Missions" which is great for nostalgic reasons and for people who haven't played the former titles.

Overall Saint's Row IV feels like more of the same we already know from it's predecessors.
Personally I think that the developers forced themselves too much to be just a bit more over the top and absurd than before and lost something on the way of doing so.

Regarding the outcome of the story, I have absolutely no idea how a potential storyline for Saint's Row V could look like. This is why, although being a big fan of the SR franchise, I hope this was the last game in this series, for I fear it will only get worse from now on.

Looking at it retrospectively, I liked the game pretty much, but at first I really had to convince myself to keep playing and give it a second chance.

Saints Row 3 with a DLC. Seriously. It uses the same town, same textures. I have no goddamn idea why they made this a new game. The writing isn't great. Too many references to other games. I don't even think they wrote the script, just a mash of quotes from other sci-fi video games and movies.

First of all i love actionpacked and crazy games, which is just what SR4 is! People are talking about how easy the game is with the new super powers, but i'm on the way through the game on hardcore difficulty, and i'd say it actually offers a fairly good challenge. Im really satisfied with the new options super powers offers, and the only downside i've seen is that cars are pretty much useless now.
There've also been alot critic because some people thinks it's just Saints Row 3 over again, and i must say, pretty much the only thing they haven't changed too much is the world. There's new weapons, new clothes, new activites, superpowers, the possibility to paint your weapons and much, much more. I know there's some basic things they haven't changed either, but that's what makes Saints Row Saints Row, isn't it? I would also love a new or just bigger world, but considering the short deadline Deep Silver gave Volition at last, i'm pretty satisfied that they atleast made some changes in the city.
All in all i think this is a great sandbox games that you can spend alot time playing. I wasn't sure if i should give the game 8 or 9, but i felt that the average was a lil' low so i decided to go for the 9 out of 10. Good Job Volition!

I was a little more interested in this because they've really gone out of their way to give Saints Row it's own identity with absurd humour, strong voice acting and ludicrous weapons and super powers. Funnily enough, the addition of super powers compared to Saints Row III is actually enough improvement to make it quite good. The fact that the physics are pretty bad, the mini games are shallow and get old quickly, and the visuals are pretty ugly means that I have to give this game a 7. GTA V is so much better in every conceivable way. Plot, writing, setting, art direction, graphical fidelity, audio, gameplay. The physics and the way cars handle in that game are phenomenal and really make Saints Row look cheap. Not to mention the huge improvements in the procedural animations since GTA IV.

Basically. Buy a console and buy GTA V instead of this. It really is worth it.

the game follows the idea of an expansion much more than a sequel in my opinion. it uses the same playground but adds "more" of nearly everything. more customization, more casual stuff to do, more cars, more missions, buffed up graphics and soundtracks or so i think), more more more.

in my mind i had to compare it to a very nice "stuff pack" for like the Sims.

i had quite some fun playing so far but noticed that i did not care very much for the storymissions at all. the characters did not capture me as much as in prequels. the superhero mechanics are nice, but render some coregameplay obsolete (like cars) in some instances which is a shame.

all in all, you instantly feel familiar with the game if you have played SR3 maybe a bit too familiar.

Where do I begin with this game? This is one of those games where you have to be careful how you review it because, if you say one wrong thing, someone will have your throat which leaves you questioning 'which of us was in the wrong?', but I digress.

This game for me was very disappointing, also to me at least I felt a bit lied to about the whole thing. Now before I begin I am going to point out this now...I will not be judging this game on the fact it was originally going to be DLC, even though I could and make the score lower, I feel that's kind of a low blow as just because it was going to be DLC doesn't mean it couldn't be a successful standalone game. I am judging this game from a story-line and gameplay standpoint.

The gameplay in 'Saints Row IV' is very enjoyable, it is fun to run around really fast and jump over buildings. It is really stimulating, I'll happily admit that it’s like you’re a god in a world of toy soldiers. But that is one of the game’s biggest downfalls'. The powers in the game make you too powerful, you are able to get around the map so quickly and easily it removes one of the core features in these city-sandbox games...CARS!!!! They in 'Saints Row IV' now have no purpose or requirement, they were originally there to allow you a faster mode of transport around Steelport, but since now you can just jump over buildings, run across the road at super-sonic speeds and, cars go soaring away like a candy wrapper in an updraft when you run into them. Another thing these powers have done in this is made the game SOOOO EASY!!! Now what I mean is they give you all these super powers to use but then they couldn't think how to make the game still challenging so they made the challenge 'fake', what I mean is they make it so your health no longer regenerates, so you have to get health pickups from enemies which are in large numbers that aren't hard to kill because of your superpowers (also why in Saints Row II & Saints Row the Third do you regenerate health when you're mortal but in this you’re a superhero and you don't?...weird). And finally about the powers is one fact that most positive reviews leave out; the fact that these super powers in a virtual world, already existed in Saints Row the Third's DLC in the real world...and in Crackdown...and in Prototype it basically takes the original ideas of other games and puts them in this (including its own franchise!) even USGamer says and I quote 'While the game's roots as Saints Row: The Third DLC are still showing, Volition has put together an amazing game from a wide variety of sources.' even though it's used in a positive context here the point still stands that the game is just parts of other games. So to summarize:
    Vehicles: Useless
    Enemies: Weak
    Difficulty: None or Easy
    Superpowers: Unoriginal-ception!!!
    Gameplay enjoyment: Fun

Now the worst half, the story-line...to put it bluntly, BULL CRAP!!! That is all the story is in this. The thing that most people say about this game is, 'this isn't a game to take seriously it's meant to just be a game to kick back and enjoy yourself'. In my eyes that is what free-roaming is for, your own amusement, not the story-line! I remember a trailer saying that this was going to be 'The Most Dramatic Saints Row Game ever!' but that isn't true because for effective drama you need a threat, tension and, believable characters to pull it all off and make you intrigued, this game has none of those traits. The threat in this game isn't threatening. I was never for one second convinced that the aliens would enslave the human race entirely and rule the world at the end of the game, because it was one large invasion! Since there was a large scale threat there isn't any fear that they will win because you know that for this scenario the developers wouldn't do that, but if there was one alien in the game who was superior to you in any and every way and he had a new character prisoner, there would be a small threat that is effective because it creates genuine tension. If Zinyak came alone to earth and was able to stop you very easily and had captured Asha who was just introduced that creates great tension because you don't if in this game their main character or a built-up plot point just ready to die at his hands, and the fact it can go either way makes great tension. There you go, there’s a way to improve Saints Row IV straight away! Also the characters are just gone in this game, they just aren't them selves. And that sucks because I like these characters but in this I don't. The comedy is all wrong as well as the charm of saints row 2 & 3 was it was serious and funny but this is just funny that isn't really funny at all.

So overall I'd say don't waste your time, if you take the time to see the issues with this game, you'll start to notice obvious flaws. In my opinion: save yourself $40-$50 and buy something else; crackdown... or Prototype. Seriously it's the same game

Don't believe the hype about this game.

The vast majority of the assets in this game are recycled from Saints Row 3. I bought this thinking that "only" the city was recycled. I had no idea that the character models would be identical (including the customization options!), planes and cars would just be reskinned versions of SR3 vehicles (interesting that UFOs fly just like SR3 VTOLs),

The vast majority of the assets in this game are recycled from Saints Row 3. I bought this thinking that "only" the city was recycled. I had no idea that the character models would be identical (including the customization options!), planes and cars would just be reskinned versions of SR3 vehicles (interesting that UFOs fly just like SR3 VTOLs), and even many of the guns are just reskinned versions of their SR3 counterparts. The developers also recycled some SR3 concepts that have no purpose in SR4 (such as gang design or car customization). Heck, even the clothes/outfits are straight from Saints Row 3.

The gameplay is disappointing as well. The main story missions are short the vast majority of your time will be spent doing side missions. Most of these side missions are literally just "go to x location across the city and do some minigame you've already done 10 times before". Its worth mentioning that most of the minigames are recycled from SR3.

Another big problem is the complete lack of CHALLENGE in this game. The superpowers make everything so unbalanced in your favor, even on hardcore mode. The poor enemy AI makes this even worse the "wardens", who are supposed to act like mini-bosses in the game, will often jump around aimlessly and never attack if you stand on top of a building.

Of course, the saving grace for the SR series has always been the tongue-in-cheek humor. Sadly, that's not the case with this game. This game feels like it was written for teenagers who speak in Internet memes and enjoy Seth McFarlane comedies, the type of people who think anything random and "edgy" is automatically funny. Saying that this game is just "over the top" and that it "doesn't take itself too seriously" is a disservice to games that manage to be genuinely funny without being idiotic (Saints Row 2, anyone?).

As for plot, there is none. If they writers wanted to make the plot crazy and insane, they should've still ensured that it was internally coherent. Quite a few of the missions start with Kinsie telling you some nonsense about alien technology, which segues into her telling you to do something that will disrupt the aforementioned technology even though there is no clear reason why. Apparently jumping in front of cars for insurance money will help disrupt an alien simulation. The game also ironically points out its out plot flaws quite a bit, as though being up-front about it would lessen the criticism (I guess they were right in this regard).

Do not buy this game. It should've been a $20 expansion pack or DLC, though even if it were I would still recommend everyone to stay away.

While some think it taking place in the same city as the previous game is a bad idea, I think it was the right idea. It gave them more time and resources to spend on other aspects of the game.

They really nailed the effects and shaders, and used them to their advantage. Whether it's the "loading" in of the virtual world, the very subtle pixelation of random characters and objects, or the almost VHS like flicker you can notice buildings have when you look closely at them. It gives off a feeling of being in a simulated world, without shoving it in your face 24/7. Only when it is crucial to the plot will they make it completely obvious, and over the top. It's stuff like this that really makes the game feel polished.

While many of the mission types from 'Saints Row: The Third' did get carried over into 'Saints Row IV', They also added some new, completely different missions. Especially in the main story. There were many times while playing through the main story that I had nearly forgotten that I was playing one game, and not an amalgam of three or four different games blended seamlessly together.

I have to admit, I was a little worried that it might just turn out as an expensive, standalone DLC for the previous game. However, I loved what I saw in the trailers and liked the previous game, so I trusted them. That trust paid off. There was not a single part in the main story where I knew what was going to happen next. It was well written, unique, and enthralling. You identify with both the protagonist (your character) and the antagonist. Some parts made me mad, some made me sad. Mostly, it made me laugh.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone that liked 'Saints Row: The Third' for its absurdity, hilarious character dialogue, ridiculous plot twists, and unique gameplay.

I would not recommend it to anyone who is expecting it to be a serious, more realistic game, not unlike the Grand Theft Auto series. That's just not what The Third Street Saints are about.

I didn't think it was possible, but everything I said in my SR3 review works here as well. Volition, go yourselves for selling out.

Enough with the GTA comparisons. Having played every single GTA and Saints Row game, I can assure you that they aren't even close to competitors. The Saints Row series has really declined over the year, yet everyone hails this game as being a savior

Enough with the GTA comparisons. Having played every single GTA and Saints Row game, I can assure you that they aren't even close to competitors.

The Saints Row series has really declined over the year, yet everyone hails this game as being a savior simply because GTA IV was too boring. Most of the people who are reviewing this game never played SR1, so they think Saints Row was always this ultra silly, casual alternative to the slightly more serious GTA. In the first game, the whole focus was the 3rd Street Saints. You weren't a Gary Stu, you were just a wild card in the gang. Most of the gameplay revolved around following your Lieutenant's orders. You actually had to use gang members, play the activities, and gain territory. It wasn't simple, nor was it easy. Level 8 Snatch activities, I rest my case. Those were infuriatingly impossible.

In the first game, we had more clothing customization. We had more layers of clothes to choose from. We could zip and unzip outfits, turn hats, put up our hoods, lower our pants, and frankly do whatever the hell we wanted. There was more intricate jewelry, a wider variety of clothing stores, and most importantly of all, colors mattered. Nowadays, respect is nothing more than some equivalent of levels in your average RPG.

In SR1, you could rob stores at different times of the day. If you burglarized stores at night, you broke in to the back, cracked the safe, and carried out boxes of goods. You then had to load them into trucks and drive them to a fence.

In SR1, you could buy liquor and joints. Not that getting high or drunk was all that important, but it made you feel more like a gangster and it also allowed you to punch people ridiculous distances.

In SR1, activities had 8 levels instead of 6. The final 2 levels of practically every activity were absurdly challenging, even on Normal.

In SR1, respect and money didn't grow on trees. You couldn't just buy meaningless properties that sit there in a static environment and do nothing. You actually had to play the activities and contribute to the well being of your gang to continue to do missions. In SR3 respect is thrown at me for taking a piss on the sidewalk.

In SR1, there was an actual story worth following. Los Carnales, the Rollers, and the Vice Kings put the SR2 and SR3 gangs to shame. Benjamin King alone is a better character than the combined cast of SR3. The narrative isn't limited to LOL SO RANDUMB kind of humor made for 12 year olds who are convinced that GTA is supposed to be some ultra silly casual party game. That's literally where the SR2/SR3 audience came from. They played San Andreas, thought that every GTA game was like that, got mad about GTA IV, then forced their way into the Saints Row userbase.

In SR1, there were stronghold missions. Even these were kept in SR2. In SR3, a stronghold is some useless building with nothing to do in it that sits around and makes you more money to spend on absolutely nothing.

In SR1, your phone was actually useful. There were phone numbers all throughout the game that made Stilwater feel much more alive and real. It wasn't limited to 911, taxis, and other dumb ****.

I could continue to go on about all the features that SR1 had that were stripped away in SR2 and further removed in SR3, but I'll end with this. I 100% completed Saints Row The Third in 17 hours and 40 minutes. If you actually think this game deserves anything more than a 6, you must have the lowest standards on the planet. There is no new content to this game. The more serious tone has been completely abandoned for stupid kiddie humor and bland characters with absolutely no development. The whole community is filled with idiots who want furries and ponies and random they find online. The quality of game was sacrificed for slightly improved graphics in a boring, static city with no exploration allowed. The worst part is that there is genuinely no content. Once you beat the missions, clear the activities, and get the collectibles, you're done. The activities are so short, I have 100% control of the city before the story even ends.

Saints Row 3 is a bastardization of the previous two Saints Row games. The worst part is, this game is a pile of rubbish BEFORE the season pass bull**** I can only hope this was a product of mismanagement at THQ, and that Volition will do better in the future like we know they can. Oh wait, the same problems are happening under new management.

That's a sign of a good game in my book.

If you want reality and no super powers, go pick up one of the thousands of "be a soldier" games, or dig out the GTA series. This isn't them. It has super powers, it's not meant to be realistic. It's just meant to be fun. It succeeds.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all I will say that this game is probably enjoyable for people that didn't play SR3.

    I am, however, quite disappointed.
By trying to go even more over the top than Saints Row: The Third, they nearly ruined everything.

I will now list all the good and the bad things I found most noteworthy.

    Good:
-They improved the engine a lot from SR3, it looks better and runs a lot smoother
-The new characters are interesting, especially Benjamin King
-The voice actors are superb and bring the characters to life, the dialogues are snippy and often good for a chuckle
-First mission is hands down one of the most awesome ways to open a video game. I mean, riding a intercontinental missile while disarming the nuke, landing in the president's chair, what do you want more
-First 2-3 hours were quite fun, as you always got new toys to play with, discovering new things, etc.
-some of the new weapons are quite cool, like the an*l probe and the blackhole launcher

Bad things: (in no particular order of badness)
-the game consists of 70% Saints Row: The Third, some activities have new wrappings, but they're still the same old inside
-the remaining 30% are: 20% Matrix (the movies), 5% other video games/movies/pop culture and 5% original content I hope for Deep Silver that they got permission to use exact soundfiles from Metal Gear Solid)
-they chose near-maximum movement distance between every (step of a) mission. I spent about 40% of my total playtime just running around to go to the next mission
-while all the new stuff you get is all fun the first few times, it gets old really fast, using abilities, doing activities becomes extremely repetitive after a few hours, so I couldn't bear with it anymore and did the main storyline and the loyalty missions
-the missions themselves also become very repetitive very fast
-the first 4 powers that you get kinda get your hopes up that the remaining 4 will be as awesome, but they are all really lame in comparison
-the story makes absolutely no sense at all. Don't even try to make sense of it, it's not possible.
-the highly advertised "romance" features, from which I hoped they would be like in rpg games like mass effect or the witcher, are just: press R for sex, that's it, from the first time you meet a character
-they seem to have taken BOTH endings from SR3. Shaundi is alive and there is nothing to be seen from Killbane. They were mutually exclusive in case you can't remember
-one of the cool things to do in SR3 was tuning cars, since you could adjust colors, etc, very well. It's still there, but after 30 minutes of gameplay you won't ever use a car again, unless forced to.
-difficulty is extremely low, I did not die a single time on hard mode
-the playtime is ridiculously short, I finished in 11h 21m with 74% completion
-the ending creates an unstable time loop
-collecting the 1155 (no typo, one thousand one hundred fifty-five) collectibles some audio tapes) gets boring extremely fast, they're not even hidden at all, you can see them from hundreds of metres away since they glow-- absolutely no motivation to get them all, and I usually 100% all my games
-THE most annoying thing for me: The mini "bosses" aka everything that has a shield.
After you take down the shield with a power, you get a measly 3 seconds to damage the boss.
The bosses have a huge amount of health, leading to very drawn out, yet unchallenging fights.
As if that wasn't enough, they can easily stunlock you with their telekinetic throw, even if you press space to recover in midair.
-knowing the style of SR3, there were almost no surprises. In every situation you know what will happen, because you know how things roll with the Saints.

Further more, very good games are underrated, buy I would prefer not to mention names. I'm disappointed with this one. I have to mention that I haven't played the first ones, only the third and I liked it, very. I have heard that the third was a mimic from the others. I cant tell haven't checked that just yet, but I will base my review on the Third. This game is actually the Third but mutated as mentioned before. And is not the classic GTA style, just morphed into a Prototype so I've heard maybe a Infamous one, a little bit. The city is actually the same, all is actually the same with very little modifications to worst. it's like imagine an ad from the third now imagine the ad with an ugly face. Bad. I don't know if this going to change further ahead in the game but the result is the same. Your character is more like a superhero that a successful gang leader or so. So like a superhero, you don't need more the use of a car and so on. This is not like isn't fun but; for the ones who liked the first releases, this is a complete letdown. In fact this 4th installment was released soo early. In fact feels more like an ad-on, that a new release. Maybe that was the first goal, and Volition just change of company or I heard so, that the result is bad. Well to be sincere, is not like is a bad game but neither a good one, just an average, what is lame for a successful franchise(or, it was?) This reminds me that there's a phrase to mention for the hyperactive people who always want to improve what doesn't need to be improved: If isn't broken, Don't fix it!
But what is broken? Saints Row just need better graphics, a little more of everything like a working subway a completely new big and different city, even the most simple solution like, only just imaging(is not like I have seen this before...) if they like variety why don't they just release a new Saint Row with a 50-60s atmosphere? All that with the crazy humor and everything so peculiar of the Saints. I would certainly cheer and like that, meanwhile look like the Saints are on the road to hell like Tomb Raider, Hitman ,Resident Evil and the list goes on ,I hope that Volition reconsider it for them and or us for he next gen of videogames PS4,Xbox One, PC and retake the path, and don't see another weird mutation next time.

The game was funny and... uhm... different (10), maybe a bit repetitive on secondary missions (-1).
Maybe too much a matrix clone, but not that bad.
I won't spoiler, but i got a bit disappointed at the end, seems like an empty ending, like saying "well, this is it".

So the game. Super powers abilities are very entertaining, story is embarrassing, music is golden, but after you finish story line and few side-quests, it get boring really quickly. Co-op might be a help, but don't bet on it.
You have no more reason to use cars or any other vehicles, because of your superpowers, only 12-year old kids always use army helicopter and that flying-rocket kind of stuff, cause they scary to get down and do things hand to hand, you know what I'm talking about. Even on hard difficulty is game very easy, so I don't understand those players with pants full of sh.t who play it on medium and are constantly dying.

If they would've focused on creating a better multiplayer experience, they would of had much better critical acclaim. That and the combat is sort of bland.. Sure there's some funny weapons, but Sleeping Dogs to me is the runner up to the GTA series as far as the contemporary single player open world experience genre is concerned.

    But I was wrong.

Saints Row IV manages to beat the Third in almost every domain. The jokes are way more clever, the story is much stronger and the good radio stations are back with an incredibly good soundtrack. The universe they built here allowed the developers to be really creative with the activities, level design, weapons and storyline.

I was afraid of what they were going to do with this "simulation", but they managed to create pretty funny situations and throwbacks at Saints 2 and the Third.

On the downside, your homies don't feel as charismatic as they were, and we're still a few steps away from Saints Row 2's quality storytelling. And with a universe this huge and varied, you will eventually have a game crash and/or a few glitches in-game. Some activities can also become tedious pretty quickly cough*hacking*cough.

To conclude, this game is just too much fun to pass on, especially if you're a Saints fan. Whether you enjoyed the second or the third game better, you are sure to have a LOT of fun playing this adrenaline-boosted, over-the-top, all-guns-blazing adventure Volition did a really great job with that fourth episode.

    What happens if you take:

1 part super powers from Prototype, 1 part collection scheme from Crackdown/Infamous, 1 part crazy weapon collection from Ratchet & Clank, 1 part irreverent M-rated humor, and 1 part gratuitous violence?

You get Saints Row 4 and therein lies the problem. The game is, at best, schizophrenic in terms of what it aims to be. While it continues to be completely irreverent and crude, often making fun of pop culture and other games, it's lost a lot of what made Saints Row the "anti-GTA". Now it wants to be a super hero game, a mini games collection, and Saints Row without really committing to any of the styles.

Running around gathering clusters isn't nearly as enjoyable as orb gathering from Crackdown or shard gathering from inFamous, the free roaming city design is utterly destroyed by the ease of traversing the entire city using super jump and super speed, both of which can be maxxed out within only 2-3 hours of gameplay time.

It bears repeating that this was originally designed as a large DLC for Saints Row: The Third but ended up becoming a full game in and of itself. This is evident in the fact that Steelport hasn't changed except to add the new alien structures. The location of most events are in the same places as SR3, the models are the exact same, and the core gameplay is shorter.

How much shorter is this game compared to its predecessor? Well, when I completed the main story, I had finished all the activities, side quests, and targets and was sitting at 93% completion after only 14 and a half hours. I spent shy of an hour and a half finishing up gathering all the collectibles and doubling back to repeat two activities for gold medals and reached 100%. On hardcore, I had reached 100% completion in a third of the time spent on Saints Row The Third.

"Why is this game so short?", you may be asking. Well, frankly, they gutted a ton of activities that was in Saints Row The Third for this and streamlined the number of stores, as well. For example, the Saints Row standby missions of "Snatch", "Escort", and "Trafficking" missions are gone. The "Nobody Loves Me" clothing store is gone, and many stores have had their location numbers extremely reduced. "Genki Bowl", which had at least 7 different activities in Saints Row The Third, has been replaced with "Genki's Mind over Murder", which only has three (and two cameos of Genki Bowl as side missions). "Buying" properties has been changed into a hacking minigame that is annoying and tedious, not difficult. As for the activities themselves, other than one or two, anyone can get gold on them on the first try rather easily. "Insurance Fraud" which was one of the more challenging activities in SR3, has become laughably easy thanks to super sprint and the ragdoll mechanic (at one point, I had over a $1M combo, higher than needed for the gold medal).

Unfortunately, all the issues with the SR3 engine persist, and Deep Silver have even compounded some of the issues. The engine is even more poorly optimized than SR3 and slogs even on quality machines. The game is a buggy mess right now, with the initial release crashing and deleting game saves, and the patch "fixing" this issue causing even more problems such as the loss of weapons, cache, and vehicle/weapon upgrades.

All in all this is a very hurried cash in that, despite the humor, isn't worth the $50 price tag. It truly is nothing more than a quick 'expansion' of SR3 that is really only worth about $25. My sincere advice is to wait for a complete or GOTY version, then wait for THAT to go on Steam Sale before picking it up.

Yes, this iteration of Saints Row doesn't really innovate quite as much as the others did, but you know, it's still ridiculously fun, especially for something that almost didn't get created in the first place.

Yes, portions of this were originally slated to be DLC for SR3, but the released product goes beyond that.

Yes, portions of the game get repetitive (namely the non-story related missions), but I found that true for SR3 and *gasp* SR2 (which seems to be the Holy Grail for several of the people making negative comments).

The story itself is actually pretty enjoyable (if not flat out ridiculous), and I thoroughly enjoyed playing it. That said, I *did* pre-order it and get it for around $40; I don't know that it's worth $50, and definitely not $60, but I've yet to see it for over $50 on Steam. I'm also convinced that anyone giving this a 0 either a) didn't bother playing the game for more than 10 minutes before reviewing it or b) is blatant troll-baiting.

No work whatsoever on the graphics.
There is lot's of annoying bugs in the game

The ending is just awful and feels rushed out, well the whole game feels rushed out.
It's the exact same city you where in the last game except some buildings are gone and there is a giant space ship floating in the sky.
Beacuse of the super powers that you have cars are now useless.
The worst part of all is the godamn price, would you pay 50$ for a DLC? Probably not so why would you buy this game!? and oh yo dawg i got DLC for your DLC!
If you don't have a lot of money like me you should wait for a good game like GTA V!

Since it's set in the same city as SR3, there is no exploration aspect, plus with the superpowers (which had already been done in an SR3 expansion pack...), the game becomes much too easy.

It's fun to almost fly from building to building for a while, but wait for a very generous sale if you wish to buy the game.

the idea is actually really good where you can have fun with your superpowers kicking zin's asses
but as the game goes on it gets pretty repetitive and annoying
mission like disable 3 generators used again and again
and your superpower like super sprint can get really annoying if maxed because you're just moving too fast lol

May be this is really a DLC, not a whole new game. But it's definitely worth what it costs.
Gameplay went far from original game. Now it's something like Prototype or Infamous, and it plays even better than this two.

Prototype 3, starring Nolan North as Neo.

The game is hilarious, fun, and a bit schizophrenic. It plays far more like Prototype than Saints Row, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. If you thought Saints Row 3 didn't take itself too seriously...this one is on a whole other level. Even on hardcore mode it's not that difficult, that's pretty much the only glaring flaw with it.

There's also a few glitches like getting stuck in walls if you're slammed into them with a telekinetic blast, or enemies getting stuck in them if you slam someone into them with a telekinetic blast.

If the game was harder I'd give it a solid 9/10, if it was harder and the glitches were polished out I'd give it a 10/10.

It lacks some of the WTF moments like in SR3, but it does carry itself very well. If you're a fan, definitely get this. The amount of homages it pays to other games/movies is worth the price of admission alone.

But still this has become a fact.

I would even go so far as to say that this game does better than any super hero game that has ever been done, and its not even about a mainstream superhero. This game has its moments, and as a fan of the series watching saints row progress more and more into madness was well worth the trip. If you want to play a serious shoot em' up gangster game, than that is what GTA is for and by the looks of it GTA5 is going to be stellar. But if you just want to blow up stuff in creative and new ways and have fun, this is the game for you.

Now there are some downsides to this game. 2 in particular which I will mention that stood out to me. The first is the fact that super powers almost eliminate the use of cars and car customization. This is something the game designers spent a lot of time to improve on and its almost completely rendered useless with the ability to run faster than any car. They should have held off the super powers until later in the game. The second thing is the repetitiveness of the side missions. The side missions were just completing activities around town and it became very boring doing them over and over again.

Over all, with the games downsides and crashing 2 times on me, coupled with everything we love about volition's stellar series made the game totally worth it. I would say this is a must buy and play for anyone into sandbox games, and was a good play all the way through despite being repetitive at times

Hell NO. This can't be called Saint's Row IV. It could be called Saint's Row The Third: Alien Expansion pack. And it should cost around 10 euors, NOT 60! This is not a new game, is just an heavy modified version of SRIII with aliens! Missions are boring, repetitive, the story is nice and the story missions are good, but i can't believe they sold this game as a new Saint's Row. Very disappointed.

Beyond this the powers feel OK they don't flow well in my opinion and the movement never feels very precise. Graphics are fine nothing special. Sound is kinda meh, I think the radio stations are really which you can say just use your own music but when that is such a big crux to your game I think that should be mentioned. Writing is honestly the only place where this game shines but I don't think its worth suffering through the very repetitive gameplay. In addition to these major flaws there are a TON of minor flaws that are just irritating to deal with so be prepared. I'd say avoid.

It´s a great and enjoyable game. A lot of sarcastic quotes of iconic movie and comp industry titles without getting torn apart by it.
1 Point less because of the missing cover system in fire

Saint's Row 4 is essentially more of the same, with parody and satire and humor that somehow mixes the lowbrow with the high in a perfect combination. The more video games you've played, the more you'll get out of it, with the almost neverending references scattered throughout.

If there was one thing that I found to be not quite excellent, it was the having to harvest the nodes to improve your superpowers. In a game that's always been all about balls to the walls fun, this aspect seemed like nothing more than a boring grind, especially since the damn things were on every other rooftop, which almost compels you to grind them, whereas if they had been a lot rarer, it might have been something obtained a lot more organically while playing the game.

The voice acting was excellent, again. I play the female version, and Laura Bailey continues to nail everything without overacting. I know Jennifer Hale gets all the voice actress press due to her high profile with the Bioware games, but I've always thought Laura Bailey to be the best voice actress in the business (I think Hale tends to overact-ie: female Shepard, but is great when she doesn't feel like she has to).

The only other downer is that, as far as I know, this was the last of the franchise. I do hope we see someone else make a quality game that is obviously having a lot of fun with itself in the future. So many games take themselves super seriously (not that there's anything wrong with that), and it's nice to play a AAA game that doesn't (and doesn't suck as a result).

It's not to be taken as something like GTA. It's open-world, yes, and that's about where the similarities end. It's a game perfectly capable of standing on it's own, which is also why this could not be a DLC; the story line is too long, there are too many abilities and too much time and power put into making this game that it could be justified as a DLC.
