There's a members fee to unlock most of the content, a premier membership fee to unlock the full hero pass, treasure keys to provide monetary and xp bonuses, purchasable levels and buffs to obtain in- game advantages and to top it all off, this clutters the UI and generates in- game messages so you can't avoid seeing it. This means it affects your gameplay experience whether you participate or not.

For these reasons, I cannot recommend Runescape 3 due to its predatory nature. There are many other good MMOs out there that aren't littered with microtransactions.

Although not as good as Rs2 and 07' Scape Runescape 3 added alot of new content and fresh new story to the game. As a player since 2007 Runescape 3 is by no means bad. Its just nothing like the original feel and thats okay. It still manages to keep its essence and is still addicting in every way. Beware you will lose years of your life if you get into this game it is that addicting.

The graphics, which in certain areas really show their age, add a sense of history which is charming and gives the game an identity; let yourself not be deceived, though: this is not a ridiculous fossil such as OSRS, but a living, well kept game with a tight update schedule and kept in time with what is expected of an MMO nowadays, plus its amazing, thriving community which numbers in the millions. For a game so cheap (in fact, you can play a lot of it for free!) with a company so small in budget and size, it sure has worked miracles in the 20 years of its history. 10/10. Expand

I feel like their updates as of lately are "let's just add more micortransactions and not include any ACTUAL updates for the PAYING customer". I'm not understanding how Boss fights either are the only single updates they've even done. The old runescape would have had several quests out by now. Very disappointed and won't be playing or resubscribing here on out. Will get my money's worth for the year though but i've already dropped my hours from maybe 20 a week to less than 5. Just sick of the excuses Jagex gives.

I'd say Avoid and don't pay for sure. The updates have sucked.

There are so many issues with the current Runescape 3. The game can be fun. Yes, However. There are alot of smaller problems. The first problem is with the endless grind. Since they added the 120 level limit they really pushed it, So much that it makes it less enjoyable to grind. The grind also isn't rewarding at all.

This game is a waste of time, Never begin unless you are in quarantine.

Monetization is out of control in this game. There are loot boxes, a cash shop, weekly promotions, and regular events with premium currency. And, what's is really insane, is that most of these directly reward experience. The whole point of RS is leveling up, but you can get max levels by spending money. It's despicable.

Jagex, despite being a sizable company these days, struggles terribly to deliver regular and quality updates. There's clearly a management issue. It's not getting better.

The community, though smaller than in the past, is good. People are willing to help each other and cooperate. It's a fun game to be part of.

I couldn't recommend picking up RS as a new player, but if it was ever part of your childhood, it's worth taking a look. It's not always pretty, but the game we loved is still in there.

Runescape 3 isn't as bad as many people might make it seem, however it's absolutely not a great amazing overhaul.

Runescape 3 is indeed an evolution in the game, one that was maybe even needed.

Where Runescape differs is not that its not grindy (its very grindy) or that you can pay to unlock cool stuff (there is a lot of cool stuff) but that it does it in a way that is not mandatory. When i first started playing way back in 2008 the game was simple easy to understand and an all round good game, but after a while it did falter i mean grinding became more intensive and paying for membership was kinda a pain at times but the core game was still alive, i just wish i had not taken a long 4 year break think of all the things i could have accomplished.

When i did return the game was different but in my experience not all for the good reasons, i mean there was a graphic overhaul and some new awesome items and a bunch of other stuff, but the grinding was still major and buying PAID membership unlocked the rest of the FREE game it kinda puts veteran players who have played for sometime seem cheated and for those who cant afford membership makes them think "why did i even bother making a character if now i cant afford my level 80 attack gear".

As a final verdict, i wont hate on this game in fact i wont hate at all, its a game i will keep playing because why ditch something that you've spent so long playing, but grind grind grind and pay pay pay can sometime lead to die die die for a game.

Unfortunately, the game has become a bloated; so over developed that users spend as much time managing their user interface as playing the game. This, combined with constant micro-transactions and prizes, ruins any immersion the game once had. Combat and bosses aim to emulate games like World of Warcraft even though the distinction had been a boon. The writing gets more and more cringe-inducing with every quest, just as the graphics get more flamboyant and distracting in an attempt to look modern.

I give this game a mixed '5' just for the nostalgic legacy that I know must still be buried somewhere beneath all these ad panels and sound effects.

Also at this point the developers began to update a lot of the game worlds and monster's graphics which made the game lose its "old school" feel.
    Cost
The game's payment model is free-to-play, but has the option for players to upgrade to a member's subscription at a cost of £5.99/m, in free-to-play worlds, players may train 16/27 of the skills up to 99, this can however be more far more tedious than it is on a member's world as a lot of the high level training content is locked behind the members subscription and even when a player does reach that high level, a lot of the abilities they would unlock from them is also reserved for member's worlds. In this sense the free-to-play version of the game is more of a teaser of the whole game for new players rather than where many players play for real. The game does however have a way of obtaining a member's subscription without paying real money which I have explained above, so for those without the ability or money to pay for their subscription with real money this can be very helpful.
    Gameplay
The main goal of most players in this game is to reach level 99 in all skills, 5 of these skills are combat only, while the most of the others are trained to give boosts to your combat ability or equipment etc. The skills range from Construction which can be used to build a player owned house which can be outfitted with many useful facilities, to dungeoneering which gives tokens that can be used to buy upgrades to combat equipment or skilling buffs aswell as reaching certain levels that unlock areas in the world.
Reaching level 99 in a skill is no mean feat however, some skills are painfully slow to level unless large amounts of gold is spent on training supplies. So, for players who like slow grind mmos for a big reward it is a very rewarding game, however for those with less time or patience it may not be the best choice in game.
Gold is the main currency for trading between players and most shops (some shops have their own special currency) it can be acquired through many, many different ways. Most players will make their money off rare drops from bosses however it can also be made by completing treasure trails, training skills, casting spells, and much, much more.
The PvE content is slow to begin with, with monsters having no real threat to the player however, as the player begins to progress the monsters having increasingly harder mechanics that need to be correctly prepared for or dodged/blocked, very high-level monsters and bosses may have many different skills that need to be dealt with accordingly.
    Graphics
While the graphics aren't revolutional or have a particularly stand-out art-style they are nice to look at and are quite satisfying especially when in newer recently updated areas.
    World Design
Each area in runescape has its own unique feeling, the areas range from jungle tribe villages to large walled cities, small market towns to elven fortresses etc. These areas arent just a one time visit either, with runescapes non-linear levelling/progressions system these areas must be travelled to by the player often for quests that aren't just "kill 10 boars" but require an actual level of thinking. There is also the wilderness which is far less used than it was before the PvP content was killed, however it is still a large expanse that players must very infrequently travel through where they can be attacked and killed by other players for their currently held items.
    Bugs
Bugs in the game are quite rare, however when they do come up they can be game breaking, in the sense that players who abuse them can make lots of money or gain lots of experience sometimes months before they are found. There have been a few cases of this happening, however some out of the few, Jagex have rolled the game servers back or banned the offending players and fixed the bug.
    Microtransactions
Microtransactions are a very controversial topic between players of this game, while bonds which can be purchased with real money give some an unfair advantage, it does give people the option to pay for their memberships with in game money which can take several hours to earn.
Treasure Hunter is a daily bonus that rewards players with lamps that give small-large amounts of xp bonuses, at a daily level of two keys this bonus is fine however, the keys for the bonus can be purchased with real money which gives people the ability to buy their way to level 99 in their skills, which takes away from the achievement of another player who may have gotten there with hard work. Buying your way to a 99 can be very expensive however.

First of all its pay2win, not only that but there are 3 DIFFERENT ways you can pay2win. Which 90% of the community does, and that brings me to my next point. To do ANYTHING worthwhile in this game you have to dedicate so much of your own time its appalling. To get the easiest 99 would take about 24-48 hours playing NON STOP and using the fastest methods which would require obscene amounts of money. (which is also hard to get) Otherwise your going to spend weeks or months at a time reaching the max level in most skills, and when i say weeks or months at a time i mean playing at LEAST 8 hours EVERY DAY! Now money is another big factor in this game, see the problem with money is you need large amounts of it for anything decent in this game, but have fun trying to get large amounts of it! If you dont pay2win your options are to kill monsters and beg and pray for lucky drops which only cost a small fraction of the amount you need, or cut down trees, mine rocks, or fish for moths at a time. Now i must add that some players have found ways to make money that go against the rules so you can also do that. And finally the combat system, a few years ago they released a new combat system into Runescape that pissed the majority of the community off and caused them to quit, (oh yea thats another thing this game is dead empty minigames and worlds.) Anyways the majority of players quit due to a bad CB system and Jagex has gotten CONSTANT complaints about it like every single day somebody says it needs to be removed on the forums. But they dont listen so were stuck with this crummy system, so if you wanna try Runescape be prepared to NOT PVP due to a broken system.

In conclusion Runescape just makes me sad and angry these days, it was so much fun back in the day and its been made into such an infuriating experience i cant even stomach it anymore.

PS: Ive been playing over 12 years and still not maxed. Thats some dedication and that some rediculous amount of time having to be spent!!

There are plenty of other reviews on here that I agree with – Jagex turned a wonderful game into something questionable and overwhelming. Jagex holds the record for "most updated MMORPG," which some see as a good thing. However, myself, and many others it seems, find that to be a negative aspect to the game's history.

Gradual change is great. It keeps the game interesting and provides players with content. Constant change, on a week-to-week basis, with content that overloads the senses, is very, very bad. And that's just what Jagex has done with RS3 for years and years now. Somehow they've fallen under the impression that the more they change the game, trying to make it more similar to your typical, mainstream AAA MMOs, the more players that will come. Unfortunately, that notion has completely backfired and has destroyed what once was a highly regarded Java-based MMORPG.

I haven't been able to log in to RuneScape 3 on my account for more than 15 minutes without feeling instantly overwhelmed by the ridiculous amount of content that has been added to the game. World of Warcraft has changed a lot in 10 years, but I know that if I had stopped playing in year 1, and picked back up in year 10, the game would feel relatively similar and it wouldn't take me long to pick back up where I left off. RuneScape 3 is just the opposite. It's not even the same game anymore, and it has lost it's identity.

For those of you who share my disappointment, there is yet a glimmer of hope for us. RuneScape has opened up Old School (OS) RuneScape servers that carries us back to our former game, along with all of its nostalgia. I have been playing OSRS for about 3 months now, and can honestly say that it has satisfied me beyond expectations.

If you miss the way the game used to be, go ahead and pick it up. You will likely not be disappointed.

Now with different people in charge that still only care about the money coming in the game has become even worse.

The game has been made so easy that it is pathetic. They are even trying to introduce micro-transactions which are the hallmark of a scamming game. I came back to play the new Ironman mode which was supposed to be basically a single player mode with no GE or trading. Every chance that they get they work around the Ironman theme to keep what group or forced interaction with other players that they already have. On top of that, players have already maxed out accounts with all 99s in 10 months.

The community now mostly consists of high level players, because the game is now a joke, that like to act like they accomplished something when the game had to be made easier for them. They are extremely pathetic. They want more and more high level content which they wouldn't need in the first place if the game hadn't been made so easy.

Jagex and Runescape should be considered a joke among Internet games and those that continue to play it should pretty much just get laughed at.

This game is absolute trash. They made me pay months for a membership just for me to log in after not playing for a month to tell me i was permanently banned for an account of "macroing" when I have never done such a thing. I reported them every time I saw them yet runescape NEVER did anything about them and instead chooses to ban ME for absolutely no reason. Not to mention they will not refund you, ever unban your account, or even show you the evidence for their own mistake. I have been playing this game for over 2 years and I find it horrible that they would do this to someone. They won't answer any attempt at contacting them about it and they could care less about their players. I would reccomend NEVER playing this game unless you want to bore yourself and be robbed of 100s of hours of your life and all of your money just for the jagex team to wrongly ban your account and not show you evidence of their reason for banning you or allow you to contact them about it. One of the WORST games on the web. Expand
