Root Double -Before Crime * After Days- is an incredibly surprising visual novel in that it manages to tell a dramatic tale in a way which never comes across as ham-fisted or particularly childish.

A ridiculously compelling opening that turns into a tragic waste of potential.

Even if a fan of sci-fi and visual novels, Root Double -Before Crime * After Days- Xtend Edition will largely fail to click with most. The pacing is way too slow, the characters are not interesting, and the overall plot takes too long to get going. Despite a few redeeming factors, it simply cannot be recommended due to the many failings across the board.

A masterpiece of a visual novel with brilliant character writing, many powerful moments, a unique and refreshing choice system, and anA masterpiece of a visual novel with brilliant character writing, many powerful moments, a unique and refreshing choice system, and an expertly executed narrative. Root Double may have inconsistent pacing at times, but the content of each scenario is more than worth it. By the end of the game, each character is so fleshed out and interesting that I didn't dislike a single one of them. Without spoiling anything, the way Root Double handles the concept of multiple perspectives through the protagonists and the other characters is unrivaled in its execution. This is a game that cares deeply about its cast and is dedicated to exploring and developing them to their fullest extent. Some may be put off by the slice of life sections, the change in focus and pacing from Root A to Root B, or the large amounts of time spent on each character's backstory, but all of these things serve to make Root Double's intense moments even better. Being able to sympathize with and understand the perspectives of every cast member gives all conflict in the story great significance and meaning, especially in the latter half of the game. If you call yourself a fan of the visual novel genre, Root Double Before Crime * After Days is a must-read. Full Review »
