Not a big fan of rogue-like games but...

    Pros.:
    - Family manor and many upgrades.
    - Gameplay is quite simple. Easy to navigate.
    - Map and its design.

    Cons.:
    - Some bosses are quite annoying even with good lvl.
    - High lvl of adjustment. You kind of need to like this type of games to play it. Otherwise, it gets boring too fast.

Rogue's Legacy: A Challenging and Addictive Adventure

    Rating: ★★★★☆

Rogue's Legacy is a captivating and challenging indie game that brings together elements of roguelike and platforming genres to create a truly addictive experience. Developed by Cellar Door Games, this title offers a refreshing take on the genre, delivering a unique blend of exploration, combat, and persistent progression.

One of the standout features of Rogue's Legacy is its dynamic and ever-changing castle. With procedurally generated levels, each playthrough feels fresh and unpredictable, ensuring that no two runs are alike. Every room and corridor holds a surprise, whether it's a hidden treasure, a deadly trap, or a formidable enemy waiting to strike. This randomness adds a layer of excitement and replayability to the game, as you're constantly discovering new secrets and strategies.

The game's combat system is well-crafted, striking a fine balance between challenge and satisfaction. You'll face a wide array of enemies, each with their own attack patterns and weaknesses. Precision and timing are key as you engage in intense sword fights, unleash powerful spells, and dodge incoming projectiles. The tight controls and responsive gameplay make every encounter feel intense and rewarding, despite the game's inherent difficulty.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Rogue's Legacy is its unique inheritance system. After each failed attempt, you'll take control of a new descendant who possesses different traits, abilities, and classes. Some may be nearsighted, others may suffer from vertigo, and some might even have extraordinary skills. This inheritance mechanic not only adds variety but also forces you to adapt your playstyle and approach to each run. It's a constant juggling act, deciding which descendant's traits best suit your current goals and challenges.

The game's pixel art style is charming and nostalgic, capturing the essence of classic retro games. While the graphics may not be groundbreaking, they contribute to the game's overall atmosphere and charm. The soundtrack is equally delightful, with a mix of energetic tracks and haunting melodies that perfectly complement the game's various moods and environments.

However, Rogue's Legacy does have a few minor shortcomings. Occasionally, the procedurally generated levels can feel a bit repetitive, and the difficulty spike can be frustrating for some players. Additionally, the progression system, while rewarding, may feel slow at times, requiring significant time and effort to unlock new abilities and upgrades.

Overall, Rogue's Legacy is an exceptional indie game that successfully combines challenging gameplay, dynamic exploration, and a captivating inheritance mechanic. Its addictive nature will keep you hooked for hours as you strive to overcome its trials and tribulations. If you're a fan of roguelikes and platformers, this title is definitely worth checking out. Prepare yourself for a journey of countless deaths and triumphant victories in the ever-changing castle of Rogue's Legacy.

Really solid roguelike platformer. Its challenging but it has a cool incremental upgrade system centered on building a family legacy. Its challenging but there's good class variety and the controls are responsive, so boss fights and chaotic rooms can be a lot of fun.

Sure, that can describe any number of games, but often that is the main drive behind people continuing to play a game that they enjoy. For as difficult as a game may be, they want to keep playing because of the gut feeling that tells them, "Okay, this time I got this". Rogue Legacy is one of these games.

Rogue Legacy is a rogue-like platformer where you traverse through four sections of a procedurally generated castle, slicing through enemies, defeating bosses and gaining loot. What helps set this game apart from other games of its kind is in its progression. Each time you die (which is constantly), the next family member in your lineage takes over for the previous one, each with their own class and quirks, and attempts to succeed where their ancestor has failed. Unlike most traditional rogue-like games you also don't start from scratch each time you die. You will continuously level up and use the gold that you have collected (your inheritance, basically) to add and upgrade your weapons and abilities, class types, and just building up your estate. The more that you upgrade, the easier it will be to traverse the castle. Some classes will be better than others depending on your circumstances. If you are more comfortable with high defense, choose a barbarian class. Looking for a glass cannon? Get the Shogun/Hokage. Need the extra gold? Then spelunkers are your best bet. The classes get randomized each time you die, as well as the various traits that come with them, so you'll need to adjust accordingly.

One of the things I love the most about this game is just how charming and silly the whole thing is. I've already mentioned that, in addition to each character having specific classes, they also have unique traits and quirks about them. Some of them can directly effect gameplay like having random muscle spasms, being giant, glaucoma, blurry vision and ADHD. Others are cosmetic like The One and monochrome, while others are just there to be humorous like IBS, balding or gay. The simple, yet affective graphical style also perfectly reflects the non-serious nature of this game.

The core gameplay itself, while rather simplistic, is solid. Like in a Castlevania game, you have a primary weapon and sub weapons that you can use to defeat the various denizens of the castle. No matter which class you play, the control will still remain wickedly smooth, making any platforming or dodging a breeze to pull off. While there are many repeating and familiar layouts, what order they appear in and what enemies occupy it are different (unless you lock down the layout). The enemies themselves pose a threat because of not only your frail nature, but often one of the biggest challenges comes from just avoiding projectiles as recognizing enemy attack patterns is pretty simple to do. Aside from encountering a few new enemies, you'll pretty much have seen everything the game has to offer in the first few hours, so it can feel monotonous. However, the drive to inch further into the castle, getting close to beating that boss and getting stronger characters is this game's biggest driving force to keep going. The mark of any good rogue-like game.

I've poured dozens of hours into Rogue Legacy. Not just because of me constantly dying and retrying, but simply because how addictive the game is. It's never just playing for a few minutes, it was always playing for close to an entire day. If you are even slightly interested in these types of games or just want a hearty challenge, this comes highly recommended.

The fun part is each time you restart you pick one of 3 characters with random genetic traits, some detrimental, some helpful, others just humorous that don't change gameplay.

What I like is that you can choose which level of difficulty you tackle after going through the first level of difficulty, and to kill the 4 sub bosses in each area of difficulty before going for the end game. So you don't have to worry about slogging through too much over and over, it is more about getting enough money to upgrade enough for you to beat everything, and hey, if you are really good you can quickly beat the game with more of a difficult go at things.

A forgiving game, that isn't too hard, but how you tackle the game allows you to make it harder or easier on yourself. I just wish they would make a sequel with some expanded choices, new enemies, and better balance of abilites, upgrades etc.

It's an action rogue-like where your skill might actually be more important than your luck. If that's not enough to make you want it, the developers managed to make an explanation for why do you resurrect from death every time, and WHY you keep all your money after dying.

Character customization is extensive, with various gear setups of weapons and armor, and skill runes that add things like extra jumps or air dashes. I died many, many times over the course of my playthrough, especially during the very difficult (perhaps even cheap) boss fights, but unlike some roguelikes the game never really punishes you for that. You're even able to "lock" the castle and reenter the same layout as your next character, expediting your progress to say, a boss room. I found myself addicted to the game, wanting to go on "just one more run" to get another upgrade before moving on to something else. The game has decent music and a charming art style as well, which clashes nicely with its rather grim lore. The game delivered strongly on that "what's in the next room?!" factor that I love about these sorts of games, including action roguelikes like Diablo and its derivatives. Rogue Legacy was persistently entertaining throughout and I can recommend it to most, even those who would normally shy away from a roguelike. Expand

Roguelike games have become increasingly popular of late and it’s great to see one which rewards you for all the time spent by allowing a form of character progression. It’s mitigated to a point by having you lose all your money before entering a castle and each purchased bonus makes all the others more expensive.
