Retro City Rampage

For a $15 game that was essentially made by one guy, Retro City Rampage is an impressive little title.

A mix of old styles and new concepts that out-funnys most other 'comedy' games. [Christmas 2012, p.89]

A love letter to the Pixel generation, an ode to an Era that'll never come back, this Retro City Rampage blasts through the screen with an irresistible combination of pure Old School visuals and intense gameplay a là GTA, on top of the wildest -the DeLorean from Back to the Future turned into a pure roadkill machine??- and craziest icons from the TV, Cinema and Videogames of the last 30 years. A must have for those children of the Eighties.

Retro City Rampage is old-school action game at its finest.

Retro City Rampage is the perfect compilation of pop culture references. The GTA-like style is pretty impressive due to the awesome artistic work of the developer. The lack of a proper balance for the difficulty level and the boring gameplay of few missions could be a problem to somebody.

Grand Theft Auto along with the whole 80's culture is brazenly imitated by this game. Still, it's an incredibly original title, it's even retro lovers gem. If you remember 8bit, you should not be discouraged by some flaws and the high difficulty level.

Retro City Rampage is a parody to practically all game clichés and at the same time a love-letter to the eighties and nineties. Developer Brian Provinciano delivers an ode to everything that was cool in his youth. If you grew up with the same things, RCR is fantastic. Take away the nostalgia, and it leaves a decent action game.

While Retro City Rampage does make several missteps, it manages to get so many things right. The end result is a fitting tribute to the halcyon days of gaming and an entertaining game in its own right.

A heartfelt love letter to gaming's past that's sometimes a little more smitten than is healthy.

Probably not for everyone, but if you know your games and pop cultural references, Retro City Rampage will provide you with more smiles, laughs and "did you see that!?" moments than most other games.

Retro City Rampage is a game that certainly has it's flaws, but if you lived through the 80's or 90's, this a game made for you. The adventure of Player is filled with references to that time period, and if words like Ninja Turtles, Mario, Contra and Batman bring back memories, you'll have great fun with Retro City Rampage.

An 8 bit version of Grand Theft Auto packed with hilarious situations and tons of references from the golden age of videogames that soon has to deal with its own limits.

Here's a game that raises a glass to the past, and while Retro City Rampage is never as good as the strength of its references there's still plenty here for lovers of nostalgia to get involved in.

Though the variety of gameplay gives Retro City Rampage a broad scope, the redundancy of driving back and forth quickly becomes stale.

Like the cold response Marty McFly got from his failed attempt to introduce 80s-style guitar licks to the people of the 1950s, a game like Retro City Rampage might have been too much for players of the 1980s to handle. But now, its time has come, and it's well worth experiencing, warts and all.

Not an especially good game but as an interactive compendium of pop culture references it's impossible not to be impressed.

Retro City Rampage is like a trifle, one sugary layer upon layer upon layer. It's incredibly sweet and delicious, but the longer time you spend with the thing, the more the sugary goodness mashes into one consistent and familiar flavor -- not as great as any one of its individual parts.

There's plenty to like about Retro City Rampage from its nods to our childhoods to its easy to get behind gameplay to its arcade mini-games, but the story -- the main hook of the title -- just doesn't stand up.

At first, it's all very charming, but with the frustrations that come with difficulty spikes and often clunky controls, it gets old very quick. We don't play games for the same reason we go to museums, and RCR makes that frustratingly clear.
