Even though i managed to get some fun out of playing Operation Raccoon City, i cant lie that it's an undeniably average game, but at the same time it still offers decent amount of guilty pleasured times whether you're a Resident Evil fan or just a fan of mindless shooters.

On gameplay side of things ORC is a quite bog standard 3rd person shooter. Gunplay is a mixed bag. There are some guns that feel satisfying to use, and equally much guns that dont. Problem with some guns is that their bullets travel in a very arcady manner when it comes to longer distance engagements, they dont instantly connect, as you watch them as they fly to their target, mostly this is a problem with pistols. I know, bullet travel is a real life thing, but ORC gunplay is not simulating real life aspects, bullets dont travel that slowly irl. Many, if not most, guns also have very generic sound effects, like the ones you find in cheap, straight to DVD action movies, bringing down the satisfyment of gunplay. Blasting down zombies for the most part is decent fun, however it's not the case when fighting human enemies, because it feels like they are way too bullet spongy than they should be and they often move around in erratic manner, making it annoying fighting them. Your AI team mates sadly arent the brightest either, when there are many enemies present and you get overwhelmed, your AI squad just cant handle it and they go down fast, often leaving you alone to make it through difficult encounters, unless you can revive them during action. The movement system is lackluster too, your controlled character doesnt feel like there's real weight behind them. ORC sadly uses auto-cover system that i dread so much. You cant always be sure which cover will work and engage, often leaving it a guessing game which can end badly if you're low on health with enemy fire coming your way. And human enemies have very good precision, if you're dicking around or the cover system, as usual, is letting you down, then chances are that they'll nail you. Another grievance i have is in how easily zombies can infect you, it just happens so fast and randomly that it's just annoying as hell.

Story aspects take a back seat in ORC, though its fun playing as Umbrella's special forces and experiencing events from their POV. There is also a second campaign where you play as US goverment special forces, though you cant play it as one continuous campaign like you are able to with Umbrella forces one, you must play each mission seperately here, something i found rather dumb. Both sides offer somewhat interesting choices as to what kind of a character to play as, each with their unique little bit of personality and talents. You'll come across events that intertwine with the storyline of Resident Evil 2 and 3 and run into some famous faces from those game, but as i understand ORC's narrative isnt canon, so whatever happens to them in this game is unique and confined to ORC. The last leg of the final Umbrella forces mission was infuriating as hell, as the game endlessly throws zombies at you and at the same time you must break through a goverment forces barricade, your squad constantly gets infected and become zombies, goverment soldiers respawn aswell, unless your break through their baricade using a zombie horde which only happens if you make enough soldiers starting bleeding sending zombies into frenzy, it's a nightmare if you play solo...

When it comes to presentation ORC looks dated even by 2012 standards, it looks more like a AA release from 2008 or 2009. On PC it feels like you're getting minimum effort console to PC port, with not so high resolution textures and quite low fidelity shadows. Though the character models atleast look nice and are well detailed. To add more salt to the injury, the game also doesnt run that well at times, with frame rate drops and stuttering appearing in certain parts of levels.

I cant outright reccomend this game, but if you're on board with just a dumb shooter set in Resident Evil universe, and you're fine with the fact that it will piss you off at times, maybe give it a try.

It plays a bit like a tactical shooter than a Resident Evil game, shooting to other armed enemies with zombies on the field just to make clear that this is a Resident Evil title.
Friendly AI is way to dumb, they will constantly die a lot and you will be more time reviving them than killing enemies (the closest dumb AI which i can compare them is Clive Barker's Jericho), at least they can harm enemies, but still....
And the game is hard, not that much like hard core but it is hard at times, and makes it obvious that this game must be played in co-op rather than solo.
Ohh, and this game is so inconsistent, there will be times were enemies will die from a few shots and other times will require like 2 mags, the recoil in the weapons is terrible, like, 70% of the shots will miss even if you are in close range.
And the multiplayer? well.... i didn't play it because "Games for Windows" you know...
And the one of the game's endings is the lames in video game history.
Operation Raccoon City could have had potential, if Capcom gave to the developers more time to fully polish the game, to make it constant and fair, with better friendly AI and a more structure and complete story.

I love the franchise of Resident Evil, each game, obviously. I don't know, I delayed playing this game a lot, just saying it will be a chaos, but it was just a bit different than I thought. The graphics are okai, but not so nice for 2012. I don't know, I didn't like the gameplay; if you drop down, you can't go back. If there appear many creatures, you have a limited space to move and survive. The most I liked is that Raccoon City is the single RE with real zombies. The comrades are useless and if you die, they cannot revive you. Why ? You're the single good piece in the game. Rare times they heal you, rare times they defend you... They are for nothing. I didn't play the multiplayer, to confirm that if there you can be resurrected, but it's weird. They cannot do something special. I said the movement, the gameplay, now the plot. I didn't understand it at all. I don't know why you can kill Leon ( I have to mention that the game is happening between RE 2 an 3 ) and in the RE 4 you play as him. Something's not linking. Anyway, the characters are good and you can choose what you like, which is a good thing. The last thing I didn't like is that the game ends suddenly, after you have to kill or defend Leon, and that totally decepted me. All in all, is a playable game, and in my opinion, it's from 5 up. From me, 5. Expand

This game is good, not great but good. If you expect it to be like any other game in the series, then it's downright terrible and any true Resident Evil fan will hate it. If however, you look at it as an action shooter that takes place in the Resident Evil world but is it's own entity, it's a decent game.

Operation Raccoon City is a game that should be great, but just isn't. Playing as Umbrella Operatives? Aw yeah! Zombie-infested multiplayer matches? Sign me up! These are awesome concepts that are poorly executed. What we have here is another run of the mill class-based third person shooter. Glitches and awkward deaths are plentiful.

Jesus Christ. What a mess. The game is just barely average. It's full of glitches, the A.I is horrendous and the hit damage on enemies seems to be random (I've emptied a whole clip of an assault rifle into a Lickers head and it didn't die, but then but 4-5 bullets of a silenced pistol into another and killed it). Like everyone, I was disappointed because it lacked a storyline and the gameplay "sucked". When you try shooting at the zombies/spec ops the AI would always run in front of you thus causing damage to themselves and making you heal them(where you can't get them close enough to heal multiple team mates at once). When you're under attack they're 1)already at the door to the next segment or 2)too slow in coming to your aid. I'm sure multiplayer may be a different story, but my interest in the game didn't last long enough to get to multiplayer. One problem though. The game itself is BROKEN. Cover system don't work at all, the way you aim your weapon is so inaccurate it keeps on flying to directions you don't want to pick, every enemy in the game takes 30 bullets to kill, even when you shoot them in the head, you can get stuck on a low object, and the enemy AI, especially the bossfights, are terrible. They run and run without hitting you most of the time, and it takes 100 bullets to get them down. So while you fight regular enemies that takes 30 bullets, you also have to kill bosses with 100 bullets, even though you only have 180 bullets in total for regular assault rifles so you have to either find an ammo crate or use your secondary assault rifle, if you have any bullets left in that one. That's frustrating as hell. The game plays like SOCOM with zombies. I mean it'll be a decent game if the enemies don't take that much hit to kill and their AI is competent, I will rate it higher if it's like that, but nope. Stay away from this game. Buy RE6 instead which is one of the best third person shooter game I have ever played which I already play 200 hours into. Operation Raccoon City should be avoided at all cost.
