Wonderful game. However, it crashes so often that it's almost unplayable - I've attempted all possible graphics settings to no avail. None of the support links work - I get redirected to a Ubisoft (who produced this game) page that no doesn't exist. If they fix the many, many bugs I'll give this a good review. As of now, I'm angry that I spent $20 on an unplayable game.

Menus still suck, bad aspect ratio, controls on the gamepad are illogical. Game might have a good story and such but it's barely playable. All other recent RE games are much better.

I have pretty conflicting feelings about this game. When I played it originally on the PS2 around 2005, I loved this as much as RE1-3 because I felt it brought a lot of new gameplay and game design elements to the series without straying from its roots. Since I haven't played it in about a decade at this point, this was almost a new experience for me to replay it and I have to say: itI have pretty conflicting feelings about this game. When I played it originally on the PS2 around 2005, I loved this as much as RE1-3 because I felt it brought a lot of new gameplay and game design elements to the series without straying from its roots. Since I haven't played it in about a decade at this point, this was almost a new experience for me to replay it and I have to say: it hasn't aged well. Resident Evil 4 is hard to recommend in the current year; if you can tolerate some older game mechanics and unintentional cheesiness, you will enjoy the experience but it definitely isn't for everyone.

The biggest game design issue I have with the game are surprisingly the controls. While I loved the tank controls in RE1-3, they feel out of place in a third person shooter. Leon always feels stiff and slow, as if you're steering a bowling ball instead of the Hollywood action hero the game thinks he is. Two control methods are available but neither really fixes this problem. "Classic" controls are the way the game controlled back in 2005: tank movement with mouse aiming and your POV locked to your aiming or movement direction. "Modern" controls acts like a twin stick system, with freedom of movement with WASD and camera/aiming independently being done with the mouse. I would normally prefer the Modern system but there is no camera snap/reset option available. This makes movement very frustrating because you have to constantly aim the camera manually while walking around. Coming from games heavily inspired by RE4, Dead Space 1 & 2, the default controls feel really archaic and the modern controls feel unnecessarily clunky and cumbersome. I don't expect the original game released before DS1 & 2 to have better controls than its "predecessor" but I would expect a "Modern" control scheme to function with better nuance.

Apart from the molasses controls, you still have the original RE4 experience here along with your post-game padding. Replaying RE4's Leon story in 2017 feels like two separate games; Up until the Salazar fight, the game's atmosphere is much more survival horror-esque but feels aimless and meandering. Salazar's fight feels like something out of Code Veronica, after which the game completely jumps the shark and is practically a different game. If I could just replay the B-movie absurdity of the post-Salazar campaign I would replay it almost annually like RE2 & 3. Unfortunately (possibly because I beat it 3 times previously) half of this game is a cheeseable snoozefest thanks to the RPG-7 and the ever-present Merchant & overly frequent saves.

RE4 is still a good game worth playing in 2017, but in hindsight I now prefer RE2 & RE3 for annual replays. Much of this game feels like padding and without better controls it is frustrating to play. I would still recommend it to fans of the series but only once you're tired of replaying RE1-3. The HD upgrades have improved it visually but there aren't enough new enhancements to make this worth purchasing again if you already own it on another platform.

This is the best RE ever and it's inumerous qualities have been discussed since it's launch on Game Cube. It deserved a 10/10 back then, hands down. But almost 10 years later, only a complete remake would guarantee such high score. This is not what you'll get here, though. Far from it.

But... This is the best PC version, so I can't give it less than 7.

For starters, Resident Evil 4 gets some things very right, and some things very wrong. I'll dive right into my breakdown.

    Gameplay (7.5 out of 10)
When Resident Evil 4 was released before the HD Edition, the gameplay was truly revolutionary for the time. We hadn't seen the tight over the shoulder shots this clean before, and that tight camera angle helped build plenty of tension. As the game continues on, you'll be aiming your gun at some enemies and hear something behind you that might make you jump. In this respect, Resident Evil 4 changed the way they were achieving their scares from previous games. The QTE (Quick Time Events) were, if memory serves, a new idea for the generation. We hadn't seen the likes of them before, so it added to the stress level one would feel while encountering scenes. I sometimes put my controller down during cut scenes just to take a quick break from the game while enjoying what I'm seeing, but Resident Evil 4 doesn't allow that, and that's fine. QTE aren't my cup of tea to begin with.

The inventory management system is expanded from previous games, giving you a case that you can expand over time. Without going into great detail, it fits well in the game but takes away from the stress you would expect in a Resident Evil game. Inventory works well within the game, though it's worth noting it's very different from the Resident Evil games that came out before RE4.

Game saves are too often. I don't love games that are punishing, but the scary part of this franchise has always come from not knowing what's around the corner and if you'd die from it. If that were to happen, you'd have to go back in time quite a ways sometimes. In RE4, that's not a worry. Again, some might prefer to just experience the game this way, but overall I wanted that worry factor in my playthrough.

    Story (3-10)
Awful, just awful. Almost everything about it is bad. Why would the President send 1 man to get his daughter? I'm not going to try to get into all the nuances of the story here and pick them apart, but that just had to be pointed out since it's what sets the story in motion. The lack of zombies isn't what I wanted, but it largely works. The las plagus virus is explained eventually and I can get on board with it.

I do have to take some time to talk about one truly atrocious character...

Of course, I'm talking about Ramon Salazar. This Napoleon-like character has the worst voice I have ever heard in a video game. He also has the worst lines ever given to a voice actor. Resident Evil games, to this point, didn't have a character that was so far over the top like Ramon Salazar. Was Wesker a bit much? Yes. Was Brian Irons goofy? Sure. Ramon Salazar simply disconnects you from the games immersion and makes you scratch your head. Due to the success of Resident Evil 4, largely because of the gameplay mechanics and not the story, Capcom now assumes that fans want these kinds of characters in their games with more action and more explosions. Ramon Salazar is the entire reason we get Ricardo Irving in Resident Evil 5.

Until Resident Evil 4 was released, we had been working towards taking Umbrella down as the player behind the controller. Within the first few minutes of the game, we find out that Umbrella no longer exists. For me, the satisfaction of being there in the final moments before Umbrella went belly up was so dissatisfying. From the Mansion the the desecration of Raccoon City, Umbrella was always the target and now it's just gone with a new story to tell I guess. Not a fan of that choice, though I get that the story started to head in a new direction.

At the heart of it all, that's the problem. While the story isn't even good, it dictates a direction for Capcom that is far off course from what I personally wanted. I don't want thousands of rounds at my disposal and tons of bosses with "this isn't even my final form" mottos. No! Give me tight corners to escape from, puzzles to solve, distances to travel wondering if I itemized the right essentials for my journey. Give me limited saves so I'm always second guessing myself. Don't give me waves upon waves of Genados to wipe out with my jump kicks!

Did I have fun playing Resident Evil 4? Of course I did. It's a fun game with intense moments. It's a B movie when it should be an A movie though. If we've learned anything over time and from the success of Resident Evil 2 Remake is that fans want the franchise to take itself seriously because it deserves to be taken seriously! RE2 Remake was my GOTY in 2019.

If you're a Resident Evil fan, you've already played this game. If you're looking to dive into the franchise from the start, I would highly suggest playing 1, 2 remake, 3 remake, then going back and playing the original releases for these games

Somehow RE4 ended up being the last mainline RE game that i finally got to play so late in the series life cycle, and while it's age shows, for a game originally released in 2005, it's not bad, not bad at all.

However there's nothing 'Ultimate' or HD about the how the game looks, it's still clearly a mid 2000's release from a visual standpoint, with PlayStation 2 grade texture quality.

However there's nothing 'Ultimate' or HD about the how the game looks, it's still clearly a mid 2000's release from a visual standpoint, with PlayStation 2 grade texture quality. But that doesnt stop the game from looking great in terms of art design and the bleak, eery, unsettling atmosphere in the game has held up damn well too.

Having played Resident Evil 5 before RE4, i already expected a familiar, but somewhat less refined gameplay experience, and thats what i got. Thankfully the mouse and keyboard controls are relatively ok and since i had that run in with RE5, the stop and shoot action gameplay wasnt a major issue for me. The gunplay was more enjoyable than i expected for such an old 3rd person shooter game. Changing weapons though was annoying, with the need to go to inventory all the time, but it's something that can be used to.
One thing that has aged like milk however are RE4's quick time events, i previously thought RE5 had the most infuriating QTE's i've seen in a game, but RE4 negatively outperforms it in that regard. Some of QTE sequences do look cool though in action, that is when the ridiculously short reaction times and moronic button combinations finally dont get in your way.

Story was a fun ride, with interesting and well performed characters, cool antagonists and some expectable, but nevertheless enjoybable twists. Some of the boss fights however were a pain in the arse, since Capcom liked to overly rely on aforementioned QTE's during them, that interrupt your attacks against the bosses and screw up your flow if you fail them.
I've also heard that plenty of people didnt like to baby sit Ashley, but honestly i didnt find any major issues with her, well atleast outside of that one instance where Leon gets ambushed by a crowd of chainsaw wielding enemies and Ashley gets grabbed and taken away, that one sucked.

Just a really good game still even in 2021.

While it is a big change from previous RE games, This game is interesting as it is never boring, it is packed with action, you have a lot of ammo, the storyline is good.

It seems that they are all connected together, but there is a strong smack that they all live their own lives due to the excessive difference in the situation and enemies that do not intersect with each other, although they play out a single group-sect.. These stories are not bad, even to some extent interesting, especially for their time, but the problem is that by combining them all into "one long sausage", this game begins to tire you very much. Moreover, there are other problems in it that add to the level of this fatigue.
Now it's 2020, the game was made in 2014 ... well-known bugs with QTE have not been resolved yet (fu*ng trolley in mines... fu*ng statue in castle). To solve these problems, you need to perform "shamanic dances with a tambourine" like fps manipulations or beginning to play ONLY with eng. language.
Wildly slow turns. Due to the inability to move sideways, there are often situations when you fail to react to the enemy from the side(the enemy has time to stuff you with arrows or bullets while you turn and aim. Turning button on 180 does not always help). And for the dessert: In boss fights this is very annoying, because while you turn and shoot, the boss will have time to drive you into the ground, because you need 100500 shots to win, but 3 hits are enough for him. This is certainly not critical and completely surmountable, you just waste more time for that, but in general, from game to game, this turtle speed is just infuriating.
Didn't find how to rotate items in the inventory. The inability to combine ammo with weapons - minor but uncomfortable.
However, I liked the game in the majority. The story, although filled with pathos and various clichés, is interesting.

Not to mention 9 times out of 10 the game will lag during a cutscene, but the audio will continue as if it wasn't, meaning SUPER desynced audio.

The only thing I can say good about this port is some of it's controls. The rest of the controls are complete **** and beyond reasoning. The few that make sense are changeable, but the ones that don't and will probably no longer be supported in the near future are unchangeable. Who at the dev team thought it was a good idea to make PAGE DOWN the unchangeable button to rotate items in inventory?

Don't buy this version of the game. If you want a version that runs and has mouse-like aiming, buy the Wii version.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This was the point of the franchises downfall. resident evil 4 is the second worst game of the franchise, followed by 8.

Ця гра - дуже атмосферна зомбі адвенчура з елементами хорору (саме елементами, а не хорор). І тепер можна керувати мишкою)

Sadly the final score has to be lower than originally expected, at least until the developers can fix the issues. Resident Evil 4: Ultimate HD Edition is essentially the great PC version we've been waiting for all these years, it is priced quite reasonably and, under normal conditions, I would recommend the game wholeheartedly to fans of the series and newcomers alike, but not until all the bugs have been squashed. Until then, keep your money in your pockets.

If you haven’t played Resident Evil 4, it’s still absolutely worth playing. It’s a definite classic that stands along with the likes of Half Life 2 as one of the best games of its generation.

Resident Evil 4 is still one of the best games ever made, but less-than-ideal mouse and keyboard controls and a barely noticeable texture upgrade keep this PC port from being the ultimate version of this masterpiece that it could have been.
