    - Gameplay. It is smooth to play even on the modern systems. Yes, there is an issue with the camera, movement. All these things were fixed in RE2 R but even RE4 is not a nightmare to play.
    - The balance of difficulty. The game is not too hard to play, at the same time there are challenges. Even closer to the end the game still may surprise and force the player to be more cautious. The ammo is only gained through the enemies and the stash you may find on the map. No buying stuff.
    - Cut scenes. Just iconic stuff.
    - Dialogues. Great lines. Never boring.
    - Style. It's that iconic RE style inherited later by the Evil Within. The story, something happening behind the scenes, the horror and struggle of the protagonists.
    - "Separate Ways" makes you feel there are two games in one. And it is great.

    Cons.:
    - The game doesn't have many cons except the main one: to run on Windows 10 on PC you need to find the software (not Gidosato, other soft you may find in the threads) to decrease your display refresh rate to 60 Hz. On the default 120 Hz. Otherwise, the game won't launch. It's a bummer. The developers could fix it themselves ages ago.
    - The game seems overextended at some point. You feel: "Ok, now we're finally done." But you're wrong. You have 30% more. So, you're getting tired of it.

Resident Evil 4.
    Очень жду.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Quite innovative, it paved the way for all TPS from then on and on top of that it's an excellent game in its own right. Unfortunately, that PC version is kinda lazy - you basically need to install RE4 HD Project so that is acceptable by today's standards (or even 2014 standards, the year this version were released)

The previous PC port however, many would say, is one of the worst examples of PC port there is.

So has Resident Evil 4 suffered another injustice with the Ultimate HD edition, or has it finally been presented the way it deserves?

Well for starters the game looks and feels much more like a Resident Evil game - when i look back at Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3 one of the first things that comes to mind is the fantastic atmosphere that was set in the game. I didn't get that same feeling with the original RE4 port - the graphics were blurry, bland and fuzzy and the lighting didn't help either. This version certainly, in most ways, successfully remedies that and makes the games atmosphere much more imposing. Not to mention that everything simply looks much more vivid and smooth. It's not up to scratch against the visuals of much more recent games of course, but it is a huge improvement over the previous offering. The smooth (in my experience) 60fps performance definitely changes the way the game feels too, especially in combat. These encounters just feel more fast paced and it certainly increases the tension as well as making the game look better. You can also now change the graphics settings to meet your own preferences.

Does anything ruin all of this? Well for, for me, the "mouse support" is a big disappointment. You seem to only be able to use the mouse to look (although you are able to ready, aim and shoot using the mouse) not to turn, it often leads to the camera not moving in motion with you, but worse it means that you still turn slowly (although you can easily do a 180 using the keyboard) and doesn't bring the quickness and accuracy that, to me, is the whole point of bringing mouse support to the game. If you're using an Xbox 360 controller this won't bother you - but even when using this the controls still seem somewhat stiff and clumsy - it seems they didn't work much on this area at all.

To summarise, the improvement in graphics and performance this updated version brings are very welcome and is closer to what this legendary game deserves. But if you were hoping for an improvement in the controls you may be disappointed.

I have pretty conflicting feelings about this game. When I played it originally on the PS2 around 2005, I loved this as much as RE1-3 because I felt it brought a lot of new gameplay and game design elements to the series without straying from its roots. Since I haven't played it in about a decade at this point, this was almost a new experience for me to replay it and I have to say: itI have pretty conflicting feelings about this game. Since I haven't played it in about a decade at this point, this was almost a new experience for me to replay it and I have to say: it hasn't aged well. Resident Evil 4 is hard to recommend in the current year; if you can tolerate some older game mechanics and unintentional cheesiness, you will enjoy the experience but it definitely isn't for everyone.

The biggest game design issue I have with the game are surprisingly the controls. While I loved the tank controls in RE1-3, they feel out of place in a third person shooter. Leon always feels stiff and slow, as if you're steering a bowling ball instead of the Hollywood action hero the game thinks he is. Two control methods are available but neither really fixes this problem. "Classic" controls are the way the game controlled back in 2005: tank movement with mouse aiming and your POV locked to your aiming or movement direction. "Modern" controls acts like a twin stick system, with freedom of movement with WASD and camera/aiming independently being done with the mouse. I would normally prefer the Modern system but there is no camera snap/reset option available. This makes movement very frustrating because you have to constantly aim the camera manually while walking around. Coming from games heavily inspired by RE4, Dead Space 1 & 2, the default controls feel really archaic and the modern controls feel unnecessarily clunky and cumbersome. I don't expect the original game released before DS1 & 2 to have better controls than its "predecessor" but I would expect a "Modern" control scheme to function with better nuance.

Apart from the molasses controls, you still have the original RE4 experience here along with your post-game padding. Replaying RE4's Leon story in 2017 feels like two separate games; Up until the Salazar fight, the game's atmosphere is much more survival horror-esque but feels aimless and meandering. Salazar's fight feels like something out of Code Veronica, after which the game completely jumps the shark and is practically a different game. If I could just replay the B-movie absurdity of the post-Salazar campaign I would replay it almost annually like RE2 & 3. Unfortunately (possibly because I beat it 3 times previously) half of this game is a cheeseable snoozefest thanks to the RPG-7 and the ever-present Merchant & overly frequent saves.

RE4 is still a good game worth playing in 2017, but in hindsight I now prefer RE2 & RE3 for annual replays. Much of this game feels like padding and without better controls it is frustrating to play. I would still recommend it to fans of the series but only once you're tired of replaying RE1-3. The HD upgrades have improved it visually but there aren't enough new enhancements to make this worth purchasing again if you already own it on another platform.

Ok, lets be honest, the graphics are already outdated, even in this HD edition. But considering that the game was originally released in the early 2000', I think this is not a big thing.

I did like RE1,2,3 back then when it came out for the PlayStation, but I think I really started to love this series when it changed to a 3rd person shooter with this RE4. Definitely worth trying out,

It seems that they are all connected together, but there is a strong smack that they all live their own lives due to the excessive difference in the situation and enemies that do not intersect with each other, although they play out a single group-sect.. These stories are not bad, even to some extent interesting, especially for their time, but the problem is that by combining them all into "one long sausage", this game begins to tire you very much. Moreover, there are other problems in it that add to the level of this fatigue.
Now it's 2020, the game was made in 2014 ... well-known bugs with QTE have not been resolved yet (fu*ng trolley in mines... fu*ng statue in castle). To solve these problems, you need to perform "shamanic dances with a tambourine" like fps manipulations or beginning to play ONLY with eng. language.
Wildly slow turns. Due to the inability to move sideways, there are often situations when you fail to react to the enemy from the side(the enemy has time to stuff you with arrows or bullets while you turn and aim. Turning button on 180 does not always help). And for the dessert: In boss fights this is very annoying, because while you turn and shoot, the boss will have time to drive you into the ground, because you need 100500 shots to win, but 3 hits are enough for him. This is certainly not critical and completely surmountable, you just waste more time for that, but in general, from game to game, this turtle speed is just infuriating.
Didn't find how to rotate items in the inventory. The inability to combine ammo with weapons - minor but uncomfortable.
However, I liked the game in the majority. The story, although filled with pathos and various clichés, is interesting.

On budget computers, you can often find a bug with a slowmotion at 60fps in the game. Also, not all textures were reworked in the "Ultimate HD Edition". The textures of the dirt, trees, houses, surroundings, static objects and characters remained the same, although better than in the PS2 version of the game. Also in the chapter with Del Lago you can see crooked aiming in a boat with a harpoon (mouse aiming).
In any case, the "Ultimate HD Edition" is the most comfortable version to play on PC due to extended support for keyboard and mouse control and some reworked textures.

This game blew me away nearly 18 years after it’s initial release. Action, suspense, exploration, world building, puzzles. I could go on with how this game made me feel. As someone who hates horror games, ‘The Last of Us’ franchise being my only entrants into the genre, I was surprisingly drawn in and couldn’t put it down until I had seen it all. This game is an experience at its finest.

I know this is considered a great classic, but playing for the first time in 2014, it takes a while to get used to. The controls and over-shoulder camera view are not very satisfying. Effectively the game is just about grinding and blasting your way from one environment to the next, in the search of an important young woman who has been kidnapped by some shady people – comical villains really. There are some puzzles along the way, but the boss fights are more challenging … According to my Steam stats I killed almost 900 enemies and it took over 16 hours to complete. That’s a lot of shooting. I may be in the minority here, but I actually remember enjoying RE5 more than this one. That being said, the game provides incredibly good value for money. According to my calculations each enemy I killed cost me 1.7p, based on 886 enemies taken care of, from an outlay of £15. I also died 92 times, apparently, so that’s 16p per death!
Some comments on the port – I have never seen the original version or the previous PC version/s, so cannot compare. Yes I experienced a few annoyances, not just related to the controls. However, I never had any issues that impacted on my game experience other than a serious slow-down in FPS that happened sporadically. If we had better viewing angles and camera controls, this would have made a big difference.

This is the best RE ever and it's inumerous qualities have been discussed since it's launch on Game Cube. It deserved a 10/10 back then, hands down. But almost 10 years later, only a complete remake would guarantee such high score. This is not what you'll get here, though. Far from it.

But... This is the best PC version, so I can't give it less than 7.

This is a good HD Edition game. In true fact: It uses Wii/PS3/Xbox360 edition version. Gameplay is same but graphics are totally different and nice. But the only program is that, they sometimes cause graphical issues and some cutscenes still use the old crappy PC version.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. RE4 is a pretty great game :) I played it as a teenager way back when but I never beat it until now. It was really fun replaying it many years later, especially with the HD Project updated textures making the game look a lot better. Overall though, I would give the game a 7/10 as the gameplay is pretty fun but does not have enough depth to keep me playing much into Mercenaries or want to replay the game.

The gunplay feels good and I really enjoyed the different feel of each gun. The management of ammo & healing items in the main game was really good and I loved the sparse resources (for the most part, sometimes you have more than enough ammo especially). I was feeling like was over the gameplay after finishing the game and then playing through Separate Ways. I didn't even play Mercenaries as I felt content with how much fun I had with the game & didn't really want to fight the same enemies in the same areas again, after basically replaying 1/10 or so of the original game in Separate Ways.

The story & dialogue were good and kept me engaged, haha especially with the pretty cheesy one-liners. I enjoyed Leon's ridiculous movie-like lines & tropes, like yelling at Luis' dead body "LUIIIIIIISSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!" Hahaha, I literally laughed out loud. Maybe not what the developers were going for, but I really loved the cheesiness of the game. I do wish the story was more in depth & the origins of the Las Plagas were explored even more. I would have loved to see scenes or diary entries about Luis' research on the Las Plagas, or Saddler before being joined with the Las Plagas how he built a connection with Salazar and convinced him to resurrect the Las Plagas from the fossils. But I know the focus of the game was on gameplay & the developers didn't emphasize the story more than needed.

I definitely recommend the game to any fan of 3rd person shooters, Resident Evil, or shooters in general. Go in knowing its an older game, download the HD Project textures, don't force yourself to play more than you want and enjoy the cheesy/campy dialogue :D

Somehow RE4 ended up being the last mainline RE game that i finally got to play so late in the series life cycle, and while it's age shows, for a game originally released in 2005, it's not bad, not bad at all.

However there's nothing 'Ultimate' or HD about the how the game looks, it's still clearly a mid 2000's release from a visual standpoint, with PlayStation 2 grade texture quality.

However there's nothing 'Ultimate' or HD about the how the game looks, it's still clearly a mid 2000's release from a visual standpoint, with PlayStation 2 grade texture quality. But that doesnt stop the game from looking great in terms of art design and the bleak, eery, unsettling atmosphere in the game has held up damn well too.

Having played Resident Evil 5 before RE4, i already expected a familiar, but somewhat less refined gameplay experience, and thats what i got. Thankfully the mouse and keyboard controls are relatively ok and since i had that run in with RE5, the stop and shoot action gameplay wasnt a major issue for me. The gunplay was more enjoyable than i expected for such an old 3rd person shooter game. Changing weapons though was annoying, with the need to go to inventory all the time, but it's something that can be used to.
One thing that has aged like milk however are RE4's quick time events, i previously thought RE5 had the most infuriating QTE's i've seen in a game, but RE4 negatively outperforms it in that regard. Some of QTE sequences do look cool though in action, that is when the ridiculously short reaction times and moronic button combinations finally dont get in your way.

Story was a fun ride, with interesting and well performed characters, cool antagonists and some expectable, but nevertheless enjoybable twists. Some of the boss fights however were a pain in the arse, since Capcom liked to overly rely on aforementioned QTE's during them, that interrupt your attacks against the bosses and screw up your flow if you fail them.
I've also heard that plenty of people didnt like to baby sit Ashley, but honestly i didnt find any major issues with her, well atleast outside of that one instance where Leon gets ambushed by a crowd of chainsaw wielding enemies and Ashley gets grabbed and taken away, that one sucked.

Just a really good game still even in 2021.

I also was thinking of stating the superfluous amount of ammunition that I was finding in my first playthrough was a bit much, when I found that you use everything and more in the 'Professional' difficulty. Leon is apparently sponsoring Nerf in this mode of the game.

I am not a fan of Ada, but I see how many are. I found Claire to be the stronger of the two in Resident Evil 2, where Ada was just a flirt and a tease that would scamper about, and Claire was more about getting it done and facing whatever odds that came before her. That and I would like an explanation of how Ada survived, which seems to not be in this. In fact, a lot of loose ends are throughout Resident Evil 4 about Ada and Leon, but I think that they are attempting to make Ada mysterious.

While this game was the pinnacle of gaming excellence when it first came out, in my opinion of course, it has not aged well is the best way that I can describe it.

This game is still a must play for those that want to enjoy the full lore of Resident evil, and it is good to get Leon back in the saddle, However, this game is tedious and might try your patience, even with the assistance of mods for the controls. On a side note, oh how I miss Claire. Maybe she is caring for the little girl.

Resident Evil 4 is a fun game, but it's not a good Resident Evil game.

For starters, Resident Evil 4 gets some things very right, and some things very wrong. I'll dive right into my breakdown.

    Gameplay (7.5 out of 10)
When Resident Evil 4 was released before the HD Edition, the gameplay was truly revolutionary for the time. We hadn't seen the tight over the shoulder shots this clean before, and that tight camera angle helped build plenty of tension. As the game continues on, you'll be aiming your gun at some enemies and hear something behind you that might make you jump. In this respect, Resident Evil 4 changed the way they were achieving their scares from previous games. The QTE (Quick Time Events) were, if memory serves, a new idea for the generation. We hadn't seen the likes of them before, so it added to the stress level one would feel while encountering scenes. I sometimes put my controller down during cut scenes just to take a quick break from the game while enjoying what I'm seeing, but Resident Evil 4 doesn't allow that, and that's fine. QTE aren't my cup of tea to begin with.

The inventory management system is expanded from previous games, giving you a case that you can expand over time. Without going into great detail, it fits well in the game but takes away from the stress you would expect in a Resident Evil game. Inventory works well within the game, though it's worth noting it's very different from the Resident Evil games that came out before RE4.

Game saves are too often. I don't love games that are punishing, but the scary part of this franchise has always come from not knowing what's around the corner and if you'd die from it. If that were to happen, you'd have to go back in time quite a ways sometimes. In RE4, that's not a worry. Again, some might prefer to just experience the game this way, but overall I wanted that worry factor in my playthrough.

    Story (3-10)
Awful, just awful. Almost everything about it is bad. Why would the President send 1 man to get his daughter? I'm not going to try to get into all the nuances of the story here and pick them apart, but that just had to be pointed out since it's what sets the story in motion. The lack of zombies isn't what I wanted, but it largely works. The las plagus virus is explained eventually and I can get on board with it.

I do have to take some time to talk about one truly atrocious character...

Of course, I'm talking about Ramon Salazar. This Napoleon-like character has the worst voice I have ever heard in a video game. He also has the worst lines ever given to a voice actor. Resident Evil games, to this point, didn't have a character that was so far over the top like Ramon Salazar. Was Wesker a bit much? Yes. Was Brian Irons goofy? Sure. Ramon Salazar simply disconnects you from the games immersion and makes you scratch your head. Due to the success of Resident Evil 4, largely because of the gameplay mechanics and not the story, Capcom now assumes that fans want these kinds of characters in their games with more action and more explosions. Ramon Salazar is the entire reason we get Ricardo Irving in Resident Evil 5.

Until Resident Evil 4 was released, we had been working towards taking Umbrella down as the player behind the controller. Within the first few minutes of the game, we find out that Umbrella no longer exists. For me, the satisfaction of being there in the final moments before Umbrella went belly up was so dissatisfying. From the Mansion the the desecration of Raccoon City, Umbrella was always the target and now it's just gone with a new story to tell I guess. Not a fan of that choice, though I get that the story started to head in a new direction.

At the heart of it all, that's the problem. While the story isn't even good, it dictates a direction for Capcom that is far off course from what I personally wanted. I don't want thousands of rounds at my disposal and tons of bosses with "this isn't even my final form" mottos. No! Give me tight corners to escape from, puzzles to solve, distances to travel wondering if I itemized the right essentials for my journey. Give me limited saves so I'm always second guessing myself. Don't give me waves upon waves of Genados to wipe out with my jump kicks!

Did I have fun playing Resident Evil 4? Of course I did. It's a fun game with intense moments. It's a B movie when it should be an A movie though. If we've learned anything over time and from the success of Resident Evil 2 Remake is that fans want the franchise to take itself seriously because it deserves to be taken seriously! RE2 Remake was my GOTY in 2019.

If you're a Resident Evil fan, you've already played this game. If you're looking to dive into the franchise from the start, I would highly suggest playing 1, 2 remake, 3 remake, then going back and playing the original releases for these games

And they even add a shop? What the hell, is this resident evil or Counter strike? The game kinda starts to get boring after the first two massacres. Also, you have "over the shoulder" perspective but the character moves like in old resident evils, it's SOOOO unintuitive.

To finish, something really annoying was he fact that the action takes place in Spain and the voice actors are clearly speaking mexican dialect, it makes me feel the game is kind of a joke, they didn't even research anything about the place the game was taking place in?

The game looks very nice and interesting, but the controls just killed it for me. The mouse is terrible and you can't control the character right. It's another disappointing ps remake...

This was the point of the franchises downfall. resident evil 4 is the second worst game of the franchise, followed by 8.

This is another **** port. Fps always drop at crucial moments leaving you with massive input lag leading to many cheap deaths. This is some B.S , be ashamed crapcom.

...it's as if everyone wants Resident Evil to NOT BE Resident Evil!

I started playing Resident Evil as an adult, out of curiosity for the series, and to really delve into the lore, characters and stories. I can see how the series suffered a serious split between Resident Evil 1-3 and Resident Evil 4. I believe there is an explanation and there is a reason for this.

Resident Evil 1-3 are more of your classical horror games, in style, writing and theme. Resident Evil 4 decided to take a turn towards a way more casual style of horror and was aimed at a much younger audience than the Original 3.

Eventhough the beginning gives off a nice strong horror vibe, you quickly realize that this is just a facade as the game quickly turns to its way more casual horror style. They tried to give the horror aspect through the first few village levels with "zombified"/mind controlled villagers and a few that have tentacles that come out of their heads.. this is where 'HORROR' stops and it's true face reveals itself.

So here, we are presented with a main villain that will act very much like a villain does in children's television shows and movies. They spout these very simplistic one-liners and have that very childish laugh that goes somethign like: "I dare you to find me, MUhahahaha!" and then Leon will answer something like: "AAAAhhh... this is NOT the last of me!". Throughout the ENTIRE game, this is the level of dialog between your main protagonist and the main villain.

I realize Resident Evil can come off as a little campy sometimes, but this is such a departure from its roots, I am still puzzled to this day as to how this game can score so high.

Dialog is also far from the only thing that I believe was changed for a younger audience; we can take the level design. We went from the originals puzzle-based locations that require a little thinking, memorization and "planning" to an extremely simplistic linear level design where you do not need to think at all.

Some of the levels (especially around the castle) seriously become something similar to what you find in your very basic platformer-styled game. You've got cannons on a castle shooting at itself (at you), because it makes a lot of sense for a castle to have cannons that shoot itself? ..and a huge statue that actually destroys the castle itself.. but the thing is, the statue was pretty much built to kill you. Seriously?! Yes.. SERIOUSLY!

I mean, I'm trying to stay level-headed here, but we go from the original games that is somewhat more based into a fictitious "reality" where at least buildings and locations are somewhat believable to the level design you find in kids games.. here? none of that! Let's make level designs to impress little kids!

It doesn't even end there.. most of your typical enemies are even pretty subpar for what I would consider "good" foes in video games. Sure, okay it's an old village, you do expect some more old-school tendencies.... but shields and flails? and Genetic Engineering......

I'm not even certain how to keep my cool writting this review as the more I think about this game, the more I find it bizarre that this is a game that is highly praised.

Did the fanbase of this game never even play a Resident Evil game before? Where they so young when they played this that this seemed like such a mature game?

I'm at a loss and I'm not certain where and how this game can even get high ratings when it's at an all-time low when you compare to the games the preceded it.

Resident Evil 4 is when Resident Evil lost itself and became a milked franchise. It even makes the live-action movies seem like pure art!

Wonderful game. However, it crashes so often that it's almost unplayable - I've attempted all possible graphics settings to no avail. None of the support links work - I get redirected to a Ubisoft (who produced this game) page that no doesn't exist. If they fix the many, many bugs I'll give this a good review. As of now, I'm angry that I spent $20 on an unplayable game.

RE 4 is a great game.... if you're playing any other version. This port is not optimized for any hardware past what the best was at the release.

It has gotten to a point where a PC can be too good for this port, causing it to lag at the simplest of things. Are you trying to tell me my PC can run PAYDAY 2 at most of it's highest settings without a single frame-drop, but at the same time

It has gotten to a point where a PC can be too good for this port, causing it to lag at the simplest of things. Are you trying to tell me my PC can run PAYDAY 2 at most of it's highest settings without a single frame-drop, but at the same time can't manage to keep a consistent frame-rate in RE 4 on fixed 30 fps, lowest shadow settings, and original textures each time I fire one of the shotguns?

Not to mention 9 times out of 10 the game will lag during a cutscene, but the audio will continue as if it wasn't, meaning SUPER desynced audio.

The only thing I can say good about this port is some of it's controls. The rest of the controls are complete **** and beyond reasoning. The few that make sense are changeable, but the ones that don't and will probably no longer be supported in the near future are unchangeable. Who at the dev team thought it was a good idea to make PAGE DOWN the unchangeable button to rotate items in inventory?

Don't buy this version of the game. If you want a version that runs and has mouse-like aiming, buy the Wii version.

I've tried this game many times, but I just couldn't find myself comfortable with the controls. The controls is horrendous, absolutely unplayable for me. I have played Re1 HD, Re2 Remake, Re3 remake and Re7. I like this franchise but for this game maybe I'll pass.

Sadly the final score has to be lower than originally expected, at least until the developers can fix the issues. Resident Evil 4: Ultimate HD Edition is essentially the great PC version we've been waiting for all these years, it is priced quite reasonably and, under normal conditions, I would recommend the game wholeheartedly to fans of the series and newcomers alike, but not until all the bugs have been squashed. Until then, keep your money in your pockets.

If you haven’t played Resident Evil 4, it’s still absolutely worth playing. It’s a definite classic that stands along with the likes of Half Life 2 as one of the best games of its generation.

Resident Evil 4 is still one of the best games ever made, but less-than-ideal mouse and keyboard controls and a barely noticeable texture upgrade keep this PC port from being the ultimate version of this masterpiece that it could have been.
