Back to the game though. The tank battles are intense. You are capable of taking shots at other tanks that are over 1000 meters away! And as a driver/gunner/commander you actually have time to make decisions and use tactics. Not like some other FPS games out there where it's just a bunch of acne ridden teens shooting anything that moves to see who can get the most kills after 15 mins. This game is a MUST HAVE for those who appreciate realism and accuracy in WWII themed games and NOT just another reason for a FPS. Expand

Great simulation of WW2. But that doesn't make it a fun game. Far too much spaced out running and spending time doing boring things.

There's no chance that productions like ArmA or Op. Flashpoint are better in this (scripts!). Full 10/10 and I'm still waiting for more modifications and addons!

RO- is a military first person shooter based around the Russian and German engagements during World War 2. The first thing I would like to bring to attention, is that some of you may groan when you hear about another WWII shooter, and I agree, WWII shooters are fine, but have been done and done again, and the general theme has been beaten into the ground. This game however is a fresh breath of air on a number of levels. The first thing that differs from the majority of other WWII games is the fact that it takes place in war torn Russia. There won't be any storming the beaches of Normandy, or fighting for wake or Midway island, but you will find yourself in a very immersive, authentic combat environments ranging from large bombed out cities complete with interior buildings to the huge fields and rolling hills of the Russian countryside. One thing that separates RO's maps from those of other games is their openness and dynamics. There are boundaries, but they are practical; If you want to take the long way around and use the tall grass for cover, you can. There are a number of ways to get into the building you're attacking. The city maps don't force the players to bottleneck into a single kill zone. Buildings have multiple levels and plenty of places to hide. There is plenty of cover, these maps are set up like a war-zone. Take cover behind a burned out vehicle, or dive into a bomb crater, use sand bag fortifications to set up MG positions. This game gives you the flexibility to play out your class and utilize the environment to your advantage. Vehicles, yes, there are drivable vehicles in RO. for some of you that are still a bit shell shocked from the BF2 vehicular onslaught, your reaction may be to flinch. I understand, your concern, and I assure you, this is different. Vehicles take skill to operate, tanks require a crew to be fully functional, tank turrets operate with directional keys so the more heavily armed vehicles operate more like machines rather than superhuman suits of armor. Also, since you need to spawn as a tank crew member to use the tanks, and those player slots are limited, just as all of the classes. This feature was implemented to ensure a balanced team and also prevents all the BS associated with pointless bickering and fighting over getting to the vehicle spawns first. It was good to see vehicles enhancing gameplay without dominating the map. The weapons in RO are very satisfying. They work on very simple principals: You see no on-screen crosshairs, your gun will move independent of your field of view when you move the mouse, but this doesn't mean your weapon is inaccurate. Your gun hits what it points at, the only thing is, if you're not using the sights you have to judge where your gun is pointing, and since the gun moves freely on the screen, it isn't as simple as using the middle of your screen. Solution; either practice aiming without them, or pull up your iron sights and aim. (Just like real life.) You will be pleased to see your enemies drop dead with one well placed shot, whether you're gunning down waves of Russians with a light machine gun, or sneaking around German fortifications with with your pistol, you won't be disappointed in your weapons ability to drop enemies. Gun models are decent to nice, animations are detailed and very well done, gun sounds are great; this game has very good sound effects to begin with, and the weapon reports are realistic, especially at distance. Factors like bullet travel and bullet drop have been taken into consideration making it necessary to lead and compensate for distance on longer engagements. Supported fire positions play a large roll in infantry combat. your weapons are accurate, but are effected by recoil rather than scripted shot dispersion. To compensate for recoil, you can force the muzzle back down between shots, or during automatic fire, crouch and or prone to stabilize yourself, or one of my favorite features of the game is how you can rest your weapon on objects like walls or sandbags, or even on the sides of trees, any solid object, and a small indicator icon will appear letting you know your weapon is stable. With this feature you can negate most of the recoil and muzzle sway. Machine gun support isn't a matter of running and gunning. weapons like the light machine guns and anti material rifles require that you deploy your bipod either on the ground or on an object to be controllable. The level of realism in this game is rivaled only by simulation games like Operation Flashpoint, yet RO achieves this while maintaining a nice amount of fast paced action. With cool features like getting your weapons shot from your hands, replacing melted barrels on your MG42, attaching/detaching bayonets that add weight to the end of your weapon resulting in slightly more muzzle sway, cooking off grenades or even clubbing and pistol-whipping enemies. Your map and hud displays only the most basic of information. there is no ammunition counter, so just like real shooting you have to keep track of your shots. A damage indicator displays where you are injured; damage to the legs will slow the player down. Damage to the arms will increase muzzle swaying. The game is in no way a slow race like SWAT 4, nor is it a marathon jump, run, dive, shoot, parachute fest like BF2. The player has a stamina system that will allow them to sprint for only so long and jump only so many times before becoming exhausted. The player becomes audibly out of breath at which point the weapons become a bit more difficult to stabilize. You can dive, as well as lean around corners, but from my experience, I can say fairly confidently that these features aren't over used or abused as in some games, I don't even think they can be. Speaking of games, I should point out how RO takes a step away from the normal FPS style. It has most of the elements of real combat without feeling like a computer game. I mean that in the sense that there are no on screen icons floating around players, friendly tags only appear at very close range, and only when your pointing right at them. Just as this game brings realism to the table, it also adds in some of the harsh realities and confusion associated with the fog of war. Friendly fire happens; If you run over the hill where your enemies are, and your team doesn't know it, there's a good chance you'll be shot from either side. Communication is key for your teams success as well as survival. Which I might add, the game features an outstanding voice chat system. And along the lines of harsh realities, there is an appropriate amount of gore. bodies will bleed, shrapnel will tear people up, grenades will blow limbs off, and a direct HEAT round from a tank will reduce the player to a fine mist of blood and bone fragments. There is respawning, but it works in waves of reinforcements. You spawn with everyone else at a set time in a cycle. Instead of a ticket ratio, the teams have a reinforcement percentage, the less ground your team captures and the more your team gets shot up, the lower that percentage will go, and the lower it goes, the lower the frequency of spawns, until the percentage is reduced to zero, and the remaining players are eliminated, resulting in the end of a round. The objectives are similar to the flags in Battlefield 2. however instead of flags, you will have a building, or small village to capture and defend. The team play is very nice in RO. No one person can win the game, and it takes the cooperation of the team to capture and hold objectives. Points are awarded more on an objective basis rather than pure kills. I am aware of a stat system, but I have not investigated it yet. It's running off of the Unreal 2.5 engine, and although it's slightly out of date, RO's developers managed to squeeze every last drop out of the engine. The visuals are in no way bad. they are quite nice, especially considering the engine. On the plus side, this means the game is very flexible and forgiving for those of us who haven't dropped 3 grand into a computer. As far as complaints towards the game, I can think of two off hand. One, map load times are a bit long, and two, falling damage is a bit excessive, other than that, I am more than satisfied with Red Orchestra, especially with its reasonable price of $24.99 on steam. I purchased it online via steam without a hitch, but you can get a retail box version if you manage to find one. I would have to say though, this game is not for everyone. If you prefer more arcade style games like Counter Strike or the get up and go instant action of Battlefield 2, you may not have the patience for Red Orchestra. Some people may not like the game at all. However, if you are a fan of the more tactical military first person shooters, if your tired of leet speakers and little kids turning your games into lame spam contests, and you can learn to respect a game who's developers actually did their homework and produced a realistic game. RO may be just what you're looking for. Expand

If you're interested, download the game manual and have a read. Ballistics, GOD how I needed them! The game is all the more fun if you play with an organised team and co-ordinate attacks. I personally love the game, it is everything I expected CoD 2 to be and more. Those that dont like it are the unskilled players that normally have to hop all over the screen to get a kill, or hope to keep from being killed. You can not do that in this game, and I love that. Team work and strategy are what it is all about, makes for a great evening of fun and gun. If youre looking for a game that you can actually get into, and enjoy immensely, then this is the best $25 you can spend. The game comes out of the box with 13 stock maps, and more are in development. Honestly, youll find once you get past the learning period, not only will you thoroughly enjoy the game, but you may find it has improved your shooting and K/D ratio in other online FPS games. This is the MOST realistic WWII FPS game I have ever played. The realism makes the game more exciting, and enjoyable. It does take a little reading and getting used to, but WELL worth it. It's funny how all the people giving this game a bad review say the graphics are prehistoric, what a crock of shit that is. They need to open their eyes, because it uses the 2004 Unreal Engine. Despite not having the absolute best next gen graphics, RO destroys other games like DOD:S, Flashpoint, AA, COD, and BF2 combined! The reason for this is very simple. Unlike other games, RO (in multiplayer) is not your run of the mill linear run and gun arcade style game. This is because of the extreme realism, which is the cornerstone of RO. Although many of you complain that this game is too slow, this is another realistic aspect that I enjoy. This slowness is due to the huge size of some of the maps, as well as the realistic time it takes to get in and out of prone, and using iron sites. Because of this, and the realism, you have to take cover behind objects, provide cover fire, use stealth, and out flank your enemy. This is why it seems so slow, because you must find the enemy and employ certain tactics in order to defeat him. Another great aspect of this is that it builds up the kind of suspense you would have in a war, as you try to anticipate the enemy's next move. Because of this, I wouldn't consider this game slow paced, as the game speed very is realistic. You can not run and gun in this game, because -unlike other games - it takes tactical thinking to win. It´s a 08/15 shooter. Very rarely detailled maps. Dammed long loading times for a graphic, that is much worse than the source graphic maybe in HL2.

The maps are too large, so there´s no real action. You just run to get to the pont of action. Run very long. And then you get killed by a camping sniper. Wow, what a bad game. Even the open source shooter "Nexuiz" is better.

Bolt action means I have to aim but the ironsights are annoying, the realistic "scope sway" is also pointless and annoying. due to the ranges I usually have to aim perfectly for small specs but cant, because I cant see the guys and when I do I don't get that half second to aim (again the pointless sway), top players all take the good classes and everyone else is just for being farmed. Too many grenades, perhaps limiting one grenade each to assault class, for realism I am surprised they totally overlooked grenade spam. Took the time to sight up and shoot an enemy in the back in the same room who wasn't moving and hadn't noticed me, like a meter in front, I didn't hit, dunno if thats a bug but that made me close the game there and then. Some maps look okay but others look pretty ugly and unreal. Tank fights are fun, even if sometimes I am shooting an enemy tank and nothing happens and they can just one hit me, other times I got a good fight and kill ratio. Overall I appreciate the effort for realism, but as has been said, the reality is that WW2 was the most miserable waste of human life ever, and nothing makes you feel more like a dehumanized tool of armed giants with morale hanging on a string like getting killed again and again in such frustrating circumstances like RO. If your a hardcore realism gamer, enjoy steep learning curves, and don't mind imbalance and BS, and have a good group of friends/clan signed up for teamwork and VOIP, get it, if not, you'll probably be excited wih it at first but quickly lose interest within a week or two.
