Wow, what a disappointment. I was so wrong thinking this was another Brothers in Arms. Single player mode, e.g. "Training" is awful: AI is dumber than my hamster, no realism whatsoever. Multiplayer mode is a bit better, but you have to get up pretty early to get a good weapon, otherwise you're stuck with a bolt-action rifle that is awkward to use at best. Damage mode is very realistic, too realistic if you ask me: a hit in a leg slows down your movement, a hit an an arm - you can't use your weapon. But now the question is, how the heck are you supposed to heal if the game has no medics and there's a fortified machine gun nest in front??? Pointless. The only thing I REALLY enjoyed, though, is being a machine-gunner myself: those tracers and ricochets, and plumes of dust when you hit a cement wall are impressive. Expand

The lack of a good way to start playing leaves me in the dust. I had the game installed for over an hour and all that comes up on the screen is the Steam user account that i created over an hour ago. Will soon see after something gets downloading in which i have no idea what Steam is downloading.

Gameplay is awful. The maps are too large. The bots are stupid. The "Iron sight mode", which was copied from other games, is ineffective. The scenery is plain and clearly little imagination was used in forming them. Tripwire should come up with something good, and stop this second-rate game.

I pre-ordered this game thrusting steam would not put anything worthless in their system. This is by far the worst game I have ever played. It is a waste of time money and bandwidth. The movies and the screen shots looks great but that is not what you get in the game. Movement is slugish the graphics are based on the outdated Unreal engine (yes this is not a source engine game). And if plan on playing a slodier you may forget that as well. the maps are huge and you "have to" drive something. and of course you are seeing everything from a 1x4 inch screen. The only people who will love this game are the snipers who like to camp in one position. I would have donated the money wasted on this game to a charity. at least it would have done some good. Now it is used by Tripwire to make more useless games... I w?ould have give -10 if I was given the option. Do not buy! Avoid like the plaque. Expand

I bought this game with great anticipation, only to be greatly let down. First off both Day of Defeat and Call of Duty are light years ahead of this game, even Operation Flashpoint I would say has it up on this game. Compared to games of its caliber and goals, it falls short due to technical limitations. The idea of realism itself ends up become a shortcoming of the game, especially in the community, as it ends up being an excuse for certain gimmicks and gameplay features (or lack of them). I feel there was significant ambition, but too much for a game won out of a competition from a mod.

This game started off as a free mod for unreal tournament 2003. This only shows how greedy the creators are.
In fact, you are paying $24.95 for a bloody modification. I wonder if Atari, Epic Games and Digital Extremes authorized this game to be sold on Steam. I mean, the engine, wich in fact was creaded by Digital Extremes and Atari, is with no doubt copyrighted.

Take a hint from CS, COD, Quake, etc. Build a single player game first, then develop the multiplayer for those who couldn't get enough. I am sure that you are saying that since Unreal did it, so can you. This is true... On the same token, you have to acknowledge that Unreal is your competitor, and a strong one at that. Though your product is cheaper, I am more likely to pool my money into Unreal because it has a larger community and more servers with more people which equals more choices (which consumers like). I do have to applaud you on your tactic to get more people online with Red Orchestra in the hopes that they would buy the game (and to appease current owners who can't find people playing online.). I personally thought that it would be a ploy for a single player game that would put me all the way through 12 chapters in a 13 chapter series and that I'd have to buy it to finish the game (that could be a good strategy on the tail end of a games life...) Moving along... The graphics are worse than CS:Source, which is surprising with the Unreal engine. The play is slow b/c the maps are too big. Unreal successfully allowed players nonstop playing with nihl downtime when they got killed (nihl downtime and no hike to get back to the battle) The tanks cannon can only be moved with the keyboard. To get more fanfare I propose the following: (surprisingly) Create a singleplayer option. More action with less downtime. Use the graphics engine your paying to license and push Unreal to its limits. I felt like I was on a Commodore. Overall, if this was your first game, good for you. I'm sure you'll produce some quality things over the next years (hopefully Red October 2). Expand

The design of the maps is good and the sounds are also nice. The teamplay is awful as an overview is lacking. Also the maps are pretty big, so it takes a while before you meet the enemy. Furhermore the chosing of the figures you wanne be is not pretty, cause the popular rankings are gone fast (sniper, etc.).

I see fans of realistic FPSes saying that well you can't swap a mag in 2 seconds, you can't run really run that fast, etc. etc. Well you're actually wrong. The reload in this game was timed pretty decently. First of all, you're assuming the role of a well-trained soldier which knows his weapon well and will be in good physical condition. Except if you're playing the Russians who just threw recruits out there like no tomorrow or if it's 1945 at the fall of Berlin and you're an old man or a kid with a Panzerfaust or a Luger. But for the majority you will know how to use your weapon and take care of it to a pretty decent extent. What this means is you should run alot faster and be able to sprint longer, sighting your weapon should be quicker, recoil should be lessened, etc. etc. Developers need to realize that realism DOES NOT ALWAYS EQUAL SLOW. The vehicular combat could be better if you had more awareness. It is realistic but you must remember most people who play PC DO NOT have microphones meaning there will almost be little to no communication between a group of people in a single vehicle. The graphics of this game are well done, especially the richoeting mg bullets, (nice touch) the vehicle handling is also well done, the damage ratio is good, the sound is also pretty awesome. All in all, a good attempt that is fun for people that like the stereotypical slow tactical fps but for most it's going to be a pretty crappy time. Expand

It will probably not appeal to the BF, DoD and CS fans out there as it requires quite other skills to sucessful play (think 'brain' and "cooperation" instead of 'keyboard twitching reflexes' and a fragaholic mindset). Hardware-wise you will need a goid graphics card and lot of memory for the ultimate experience. I look forward to the future of this game. Definately the MOST REALISTIC WW2 game out there. It is very easy to be misled by the people who gave it poor ratings. Some of them claim to want "realistic war simulation," but then complain when the actual view that one would have from a real tank is too small for them (believe it or not, in a real war, you cannot simply switch to 3rd person to get a better picture of the battlefield... sorry to spoil it!). There was one person who complained about the "outdated Unreal engine," and this same person claimed to have been "misled" by the promo video. This is where competency of ones own system comes into play. When developers put together a promotional video that serves as the face of their product, it only makes sense that they are going to make it using a top-of-the-line system, which will in turn display the game and graphcis at their best. (SPOILER ALERT: Everyone does this! If Tripwire wants to promote their game using a video that was made on a brand new, state-of-the-art computer, then that is simply good marketing. I do not have a brand new computer, and I realize that before I buy a game that I am not going to be able to max out the settings. However, I still buy games, and I do not complain because my own out-of-date system can't handle it. Finally, any complaints about bugs are very unwarranted. Yes, there have been a lot of bugs in this game. Yes, there are some lag issues and long load times. HOWEVER, Tripwire already had a support site set up and ready to go by the time the game was released, and they are already addressing issues and working on a patch. In fact, I would say that I much more pleased with Tripwire than almost any other gaming company (besides Valve, of course), mainly because they are acknowledging that their product has flaws, but that they are also devoting a lot of time and energy to eliminating thos flaws. BOTTOM LINE: Tripwire is a brand new company of guys who won a mod contest... cut them some slack. They have very quickly put together an awesome game, quite possibly the most realistic WW2 fps out there, and they are giving it to us for $24.99. Compared to the $50.00 pricetag of most new games, this is a great value. The technical support and attention to flaws is unmatched by any other game developer out there (once again, besides Valve), and I think that I can speak for almost all mature gamers out there when I say that we would much rather have a cheap game that needs some fine tuning (with amazing tech support and developer attention) instead of an over-priced game that we have to wait 3 years to play. If you're an adult and can withstand a few minor setbacks, then this game is going to be a great purchase. If you can't handle realism and expect some mod-makers to deliver a fast, cheap, flawless game their first time, then you're going to be waiting a while. Expand
