I really cannot see the point of a beta if they don't learn from it. The bandage system needed changing because it doesn't reward team play what so ever, it just feels very pointless. All the servers seem to have crazy lag and poor hit detection so obviously something needs fixing there too. None of the stats work, like these basic things that you need to get right in the beta before you release the game!

I could see RO2 being really fun in the future but right now it's virtually unplayable and as a result gets a low score.

I've rated the game based on roughly 2 hours of game play, and not playing multi-player mode. The game is good, but at the same time you kinda see things that you would want to improve. On the other hand, I think the actual game play could have used a bit more work. I thought the enemy forces in the single player mode was pretty small, and I dont think the game pushes the envelope, as I think all new games should be trying to be better than what is considered the best.

My initial rating would have been a 9, but the Multi-Player mode would not load servers for me, and when they did, I couldn't connect to any of them, so I was unable to see how it played with other actual people, and seen how, if any, the game lagged. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase and would recommend it.

Not for the faint at heart. Steep learning curve, but if realism and the horrors of war are your cup of tea, then HoS is a game for you. I stay with one map until I feel I have mastered the nooks and carnies of all the best hiding places. This game will last me for a long time without gamer burnout. Outstanding job TripWire. Can't wait for new material to be included.

The AI is ridiculously stupid, teammates standing in front of your gun constantly, enemy AI that have dead on aiming and melee timing or just so dumb they cover in the window next to you. In essence the singleplayer is just the same old MP maps with stupid bots. For the time it took for them to make this game I thought the singleplayer would have characters ect that you see in most singleplayer FPSs. Also the single player bugs suck as planes hovering like helicopters and tanks easily getting stuck and this is bad because unlike the first RO you can bail out of the tank unless the tank or you dies. Bugs, bugs bugs, can't prone here.. can't deploy mgs in bunkers or dug outs or areas suited for good MG positions. The cover system is completely useless. Also if you are hit and need to bandage yourself your character decides to go into cover instead of bandaging leading to your bleed out death. They should have separated the, bandage, use and cover buttons I mean... come on. Also the gun sounds in RO1 were way better. The granades sound like exploding baby powder and some of the guns sound like they are on silencers Ex:KAR98. Also the reloading animations are off. You fire 1 shot and reload 2 bullets into the chamber? The real gold in the game in the Multiplayer which the Title is highly renown for. Stick with it, because the Singlepalyer in embarrassingly bad. I really wanted to love this game i really did but i just can't. Another flaw is that the weapons I spent $10 extra dollars for are not there on release like promised? That is insulting. RO1 1.0 played better then this crap. I am really pissed. Expand

I enjoyed how the mechanics worked in the single player campaign. The mechanics, without giving anything away, allow for full immersion into the perspective of a soldier, where: you are terrified, you are going to think tactically, and you are going to struggle to capture a location. Tripwire also did a wonderful job with making the game only cost around $30 if you already owned Red Orchestra 1 in the pre-order, and then $40 as the normal game's cost. The polygon counts are high, the game is beautiful, the combat features are vast and plentiful, the game has girth to it that every other FPS seems to lack. Expand

    Really dissapointed with this game.

People in the community think that when we criticise this game is cause we are COD or Battlefield players which in my case is completely wrong. I come from Wolfentein: Enemy Territory series and I was looking for a game that made me had fun, trailers looked promising but after playing there's only one conclusion: This game is just boring as hell.

I come from Wolfentein: Enemy Territory series and I was looking for a game that made me had fun, trailers looked promising but after playing there's only one conclusion:

This game is just boring as hell. Whether you are skilled or not it doesn't matter, most time of the map you will spend it just running around to get killed by a random guy camping or a bot (not much human players either, nothing strange either)

Graphics are nice, not outstanding but correct, atmosphere is good too. These is the only reason why I give it 2 points.

However, gameplay is incredibly boring, doesn't matter if you play the "action" mode or the "classic" mode, in both cases you will end up doing the same, running or dying or camping waiting to kill one or two enemies in 15 mins.

The maps are just too big and badly created, there are no short distance fights, just enormous buildings to walk around, sniper fights and boring boring walking.

Some blame the relase at beta stage as the main reason why this game was not succesful but this is wrong, just a few bugs and glitches would have ketp a big community waiting for the patches.

This game is just not fun to play and thats why the game dies day by day and the community gets smaller.

This game with the atmosphere had all the ingredientes to be an awesome arcade action game, sadly another WWII game to forgett.

Making a "realistic style" game as the fans claim doesnt mean making a boring game.

Developers should learn a bit from old action games. If there are only tanks and basicly infrantry fights... make action available in the game, it just feels so slow you sometimes forget you are supposed to be in a war inside the game.

As I said, really dissapointed with this game.

What is more in SP battles looks identically as in BF1942, no tactics just rush on enemy positions. OK let's leave AI and focus on other things, for example terrain graphics, how awful they are. Anyone should see training and environment so old school but in wrong meaning of it like from an average game dating back to 2007-2008. Playing this game can lead to frustration when you cannot crouch in the open field, different action are associated with a single key thus causing you unable to perform desired action as it is usually the other one game unintended to perform. Its hard to say what took devs additional 14 days of polishing their product? Maybe it was even more crappier than 'release' product, or we are playing just paid beta, while devs are fixing errors? All faith is left for MP after few patches concerning on gameplay problems cause graphics won't be changed and SP will remain some kind of reincarnation of BF1942-style-crappy-ai. If someone is challenging whether to buy or not this product for SP I would not recommend to do it, for MP it could be playable but not now and buyer should wait for few weeks after mayor patch introduction or after certain bargain. Not recommended.

PS: I bought this product mainly for SP cause I don't have time for dozens of multiplayer matches thus score corresponds to 90% SP and 10% MP play. For standalone SP I would give 1.0 (BF1942 replay after 10 years) and for MP 6.0 so after quick counting its 1.5 - still 1.

Well, after waiting 3 months -the game (Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad) finally came out, and it was ready to be played! So therefore i installed the game, and when it was done, i started it...
Suddenly my screen turned all black, and some old 19th music started. Shortly after, the menu appeared, and i was available to choose which mode i wanted to play. Single player or multiplayer? -Because it was my first time playing, i picked single...
I picked the German mission... -since the Russian version couldn't be picked before you've completed the German version.
The mission started off with a single task..; I and my German army group was suppose to conquer some land from the Russian's. So i picked up my gun, and ran side by side with my squad against the Russian's. Already when i ran i could feel that this is going to be really intense. I ran up against a wall, to use it as protection. It made me feel safe. I fired some warning shot's against our enemies. -It feels so real firing a gun in this game! I heard Russians speak, so i took a peek and noticed a Russian running against me. So i aimed for him and shot him... But that's when i realise i'm the one laying down and dead... someone shot me just before i got the chance to shoot... That made me realise that this game means business!

I would have given the game; 9/10, but since there is so many bugs in the game, i pick to give it; 8/10 instead.

That said, the game itself is excellent. In terms of realism it puts any other World War II shooter to shame. The rifles are a bit too accurate it seems, but they are immensely satisfying to use. The cover system is well-designed for the most part, and very impressive to see in a multiplayer FPS.

I could do with some adjustments to the rules- it seems that every single game ends with the arbitrary capture of a point instead of the death of a soldier. The game could really use a "sudden death" for the defenders in Countdown and Territories so that the defenders get a chance to retaliate when their last point is taken by the enemy. It also seems that maps without attackers or defenders are decided by an arbitrary time limit, which is annoying.

Still, I feel like this is a worthy alternative to the COD and Battefield franchises. Now if only it would run well...

The atmosphere is great, you wince and duck as you hear and feel the bullets fly past you or strike home! After a successful couple of rounds as team commander barking orders, leading charges and calling artillery I was mentally drained as if I had done a hard days work (could just be getting old :) ) , which is a great feeling to get from a game. Staying alive seems to matter more to me in this game than any other fps. The game does have a steep learning curve, but it is worth the effort, one has to learn how each weapon operates to know how to use it to maximum effect. The game is a little more COD player friendly that its predecessor, however its definitely for more mature gamers.
Yes the game has bugs and crashes, however its still very early days and a raft of patches have been released and more to follow I don't doubt. Plus I can only count on one hand the number of games that have been released bug free on the PC in the last 5 years, unfortunately this is how the PC game development has been heading for the last few years, so no one should be surprised by this. For those prefer RO1, well I'm certain that mod's and game tweeks are just around the corner, RO1 was not perfect when released. Currently the weakest multi-player part of RO2 is the tank maps, the tanks do not feel quite right yet and the map is dull, once again though its only a matter of time before new updates and content will be released to address. Please don't buy this game for single player mode as this is just the multi-player maps with bots just like practice mode in RO1 but with story cut scenes between maps. This does not bother me as I never buy FPS for single player mode as they are generally scripted like a film and like shooting fish in a barrel (COD for example). So this game is not for every one, but for those that are into the history of WW2, who are mature, patient and willing to learn, this game is a gem.

I was really torn as to what rating I should give this game, as during my first two multiplayer games I immediately thought it deserved a 9 or even a 10, but that has since changed a bit.

Let me start off by saying that I never played Ostfront, nor have I played any other realism fps. Way back when Call of Duty 2 was released I was amazed by its multiplayer and have ever since been searching for a WWII fps experience to top what I got out of CoD2. When I discovered Heroes of Stalingrad I knew that it could very well be the game I'd been searching for, so I could hardly contain myself. When I entered my first game my graphic settings were on 'lowest,' as I just wanted to get a bearing on how my computer could run the game, and even on the low settings it looked beautiful. Don't listen to ANYONE who claims that this game looks anything other than great, as even sub-par settings will satisfy you.

Now for the gameplay. I'm going to say right now that if you're looking for another CoD:WaW you will be disappointed. Many people seem to have criticized HOS for being too similar to the CoD series, but as a gamer who never played Ostfront and switched over from playing Call of Duty games religiously this game is an incredibly refreshing change of pace. Yes, you can unlock attachments and guns and yes there are recon planes, but they are not what you'd expect. By "attachments" what the game actually means is that if you use the basic bolt-action rifle for one army for a long time (and I mean a LONG time) you can unlock a bayonet. Or if you're somehow lucky enough to be a squad leader over and over again you might just unlock a round-drum clip. As for the recon planes, they really only serve to help squad leaders spot positions for artillery, and for the basic rifleman all they will do is tell you that there is, in fact, an entire team of enemies roughly somewhere where you are not. NOW I will get on to the actual gameplay. When you join your first server you will almost definitely only be able to enter the battlefield with only a bolt action rifle and 2 grenades. And the next game. And probably the next game. In fact, I'd say overall you're bound to be a basic rifleman 50% of the time. Again, people used to CoD will hate this, but once you actually get immersed in the game you realize how fun it really is. There is nothing more exhilarating (and actually true to history) than being a pinned down Russian soldier laying down alongside 15 or so other soldiers trying to remember how many bullets are left in your gun, all the while being told by an officer that as soon as the smoke grenades go up you have to run directly towards the enemy fire that has you pinned down. Yes, as a rifleman your k/d spread will almost never be positive, but the fun of it is just that. You are simply one of the pawns in the battle, and your only options are to provide suppressing fire or attempt to overrun the enemy with sheer numbers. I could go on and on about each one of the many classes, but I should really move on.

Now for the reasons I didn't give this game a 10. There are 3 game modes, but you will only ever play one: territory. Of the entire community about 90% of the servers are territory only, and the other 10% never have a single player on them. Also, most of the servers with more than 20 players connected will have tanks disabled, which is something that I simply can't understand. I've only played a single game so far where tanks were allowed, and it honestly didn't change the gameplay that much, so I don't know what the point is in disabling them. These both ultimately serve to make the game more repetitious, which is a shame because the game was DESIGNED to have all these additional features that are simply ignored. And then there's the single player. If Tripwire had simply excluded single player I would have given this game a 9/10, but they decided to throw it in anyways. The solo experience is a joke. It feels like a bad demo for the original battlefield 1942. It consists of literally the exact maps and game modes you find online, but with about 1/3 of the intensity of multiplayer and downright awful AI. There is literally no reason to play it.

Overall this is a great game. It has some flaws, but from what I can tell all the initial bugs it got criticized for have been patched and the multiplayer experience is a blast. I recommend this to any gamer who has gotten bored of the CoD formula.

The pros: you can get a good adrenaline rush from playing this game, since it heavily simulates reality, so you die extremely easily.

Cons: Tripwire has NOT done a good job supporting this game. Initially, it was so buggy, that it was almost unplayable, they have patched it many times since then, and its still a mess. collision detection is unreliable, the game still takes up quite a large amount of resources to run for an Unreal 3 Engine game, forget about using AI Bots, as they are often hard to hit due to their jerky movements and animations, along with their animations and models not showing what they are really doing. I have been head-shot by AI bots many times when they are clearly looking the other direction, the bullet literally flies out of the muzzle of the gun, does a 180 the moment it leaves the barrel, and plants itself firmly in my face. They scale AI bots to your Honor Level, which means, when you first start out, they cant hit you at all almost, then when you get to at least level 50, they will headshot you from across the map with a submachine gun on the first shot 90% of the time. not only that, but the AI has some of the worst path-finding ive seen... with them bugging out on STOCK maps, all 30 AI players on your team will all get stuck in some particular spot or another, either they get stuck somewhere, or they will eventually all wander OUT-of-bounds till they are killed by being out of bounds too long... the AI isnt the only bad part. The UI is also buggy as hell, with one of the common bugs being that at the end of a match, it will continually make a clicking noise, as if you clicked on a button, and every time that happens, the map is shown, and it would kill the scoreboard if you have it up, its not game-breaking, but its annoying as hell. There are also issues with how the game runs on servers as well. map voting sometimes, ends up with a completely random map being chosen in the end, and I have seen an online campaign game get completely out of whack, bugging out and displaying everything wrong.

one annoying thing I have to note is the stupid way they did tank mechanics. Its fun to drive a tank and it feels authentic and everything, but the hit detection and damage system is just stupid, as they state that it simulates real-life, but it does not in any way. they state that the angle of the armor and how the shot hit the armor affects damage and penetration, which is completely wrong. no matter what angle you hit a tank, its the same "damage". plus, throw in random damage on top of that. sometimes you barely glance a tank with a shot to the front armor, and it explodes in one shot, sometimes, you have to hit it dead center where the ammo bin is with 5-6 shots before it explodes... tank battles would be much more fun if the damage was not random like it is right now.

Its cute that they added a leveling system to both the soldier classes and weapons, but I think it was something that is completely out of place, and I feel like they were pressured into putting it in due to CoD being so popular with its level and unlock system. that entire system should be tossed, since its a form of "the rich get richer" which really ruins the community, as it turns newbies away, which is a major issue since RO2 is heavily realism oriented, so it has a massively steep learning curve in the first place.

the largest issue I have is the maps. many of them are historically accurate, but that does not mean that the maps are balanced in any way. not just that, but most of the "community maps" that were put into the game after a map-making contest are just plain bad. They may look pretty, but they are in no way balanced, nor fun to play. most of the community maps are wide-open sniper-fests, either heavily favoring the attackers or defenders, there are only a few maps where it feels like both sides have an equal chance at winning.

in the end, its a fun game, and the idea is something I really love, they just ruined the execution of it by not releasing it in a playable bug-free state, and considering the competitive nature of games by making balanced maps. I give it a 6/10 since it is inexcusable that this game is still in such a buggy state more than a year after release, even if it is "playable". If the game worked perfectly with no bugs, and they fixed the balance issues, I would give it a 9/10.

I have played this game longer than any other. This is because this game has the best multiplayer if you want the ultimate realistic hardcore FPS experience.

The soundscape is excellent. Weapons sound very realistic, whether near, far, or inside a building. Weapon handling (accuracy etc) are still the best I have ever seen in any game (much better than ARMA series in my opinion). There are some neat gameplay mechanics that simulate suppression, and reward teamwork and discourage camper score-whoring. This is probably the only game that really models suppression. Don't bother with the single-player though, its rubbish and the AI is dumb.

When it was released back in 2011, it was rough around the edges with lots of bugs, but now in 2014, with continuous support from the devs, virtually all the problems have been ironed out, and it now runs very stable.

Being realistic and brutal, this is very unforgiving to noobs (and CoD players). Only 1 rifle bullet is needed to kill. Noobs spawn, run forward, and get killed by enemy artillery, or a tank 300m away, or a sniper 200m away, or a machine gunner 150m away, or a maxed out assault trooper 5m away, and never see it coming. Being realistic, machine guns are almost just as accurate as sniper rifles, but it is slightly harder to spot prone enemies without the scope. I am usually the machine gunner, and by a round's end (20min) I may have killed over 80 of them and only died 5 times. That's how ruthless this game is. This is arguably both the game's biggest strengh, and its biggest problem.

This game uses a leveling and unlock system, but it is still quite fair on new players. While fully levelled guns will help (with slightly reduced weapon sway, recoil, reload time, magazine size etc) it is still only 20% of your effectiveness and the remaining 80% is down to your tactical awareness, teamwork, and most of all, your individual skill. That is the most important thing. If you are naturally good, you will start out quite well and only get better as you level up, but if you are not so good at aiming with a mouse, you might always struggle.

The online community is more mature than in most other shooter games. We still get the occasional 12 year old, but not too often. As of Dec-2014 there are still a good range of servers and a good volume of players online (about 1500 sunday night, 300 monday morning). At peak times there are about 5-10 servers with 64 players, and some servers occasionally go over the 64 player limit. The most I have seen is 85, that was epic. In 800 hours of gameplay I have only seen 1 incident of hacking (the artillery hack), and that one was patched out by the devs within days. So, this game has a virtually hack-free environment.

So, this game is too brutal and realistic for many, but if CoD or Battlefield is not cutting it for you, I recommend you try this.

Everyone looks like dead dolls, and it really ruins the feeling you get. Upon first view most of the game looks great, but when you look into small details like this you realize it's very unpolished and fails to deliver simple things games from 2005 were able to produce. Textures look good, but many of the objects have uneven edges. Not very impressive for a game from 2011.

(+++) Sounds. This part was just stunning. It feels as if though you're in a real war, with soldiers on each side cursing at each other in their native tongue (given you set in-game language to this), while they hammer the opposing side with gunfire, airstrikes and grenades. The game makes a fantastic effort at making the possibly greatest battle of all time live up to its record. Death screams, prayers, and begging for mercy made me almost feel sorry for them. To top it off, Sam Hollick composed a staggering 25 scores for the game, all which fit the gritty setting of the war, where heroes are welcomed and enemies loathed.

(+, -) Gameplay. The one thing I like about the game is the fast pacing of it. You get the feeling that there is an extreme disregard for human lives, which was very true indeed for the Battle of Stalingrad, and the rest of the Eastern Front, for that matter. What bothers me the most is how unbalanced the game is. The Axis clearly has superior weapons, which is all fine and dandy since that's the way it was back in the real war, but back then the Soviets made up for that with their sheer numbers. Here, the armies are equally sized. One thing that made me shiver was the introduction of the MKB-42, a prototype to the MP-44. Just because the Germans had a few working models back in Berlin, it doesn't make it okay to distribute them among the soldiers on the Eastern Front. To make matters worse, they usually end up dominating the game.

    All in all:

    Audio: 10/10
    Graphics: 6/10
    Gameplay: 6/10
    Overall Score: 7.3/10

I recommend the game. This review might not help you if you're looking for a new Red Orchestra: Ostfront, but if we imagine the game being the first in the series, this is the score I'll be giving it. Comparing it to the first which I loved to the death and still do, the review score would be considerably lower. A step back if you ask me, but the two games can't really compare much to each other.

One of the best games I've ever played. The realism and the gameplay elements are the most unique I've seen in a game in a long time. Although it has it's low points, it is still a great tactical shooter worthy of those tired of the Call of Duty and Halo world we live in now.

TWI loves to take years to fix gamebreaking bugs, too. Mapclipping (exploits) and MG-clipping (invulnerable MG guns) were in the game for years.

I enjoy these types of realistic games, this one is basically dirt cheap and is as timeless as Call of Duty: World at War or Medal of Honor: Allied Assault if you still even play the latter lol.

This developer built its reputation on giving lots of free content to support the game - to date, all we have had from them is 2 new maps and 2 new weapons. Pre-release, the developers promised 4 new tanks in the first content patch, now, 2.5 years later, we are still waiting.

It's realistic and gritty enough, but they also went the mainstream way and added a level-up system and you get weapon upgrades and stat boosts ... so you have to decide how realistic that is. (Interesting paradox of this: you need to be level 25 to get a bayonet on your rifle, BUT a total noob can immediately grab a very important role such as Commander and ruin everybody's fun by not knowing what to do ...)

ROOST was a classic game, but this falls very short of that, and the lack of new content is really frustrating, the game had so much potential.

    Singleplayer - 5/10
I have got to say that the singleplayer for Red Orchestra 2 is the worst I have ever seen, horrible AI, tons of glitches, awful story and also the same objectives, over and over and over again. "Capture this, then capture that, then finally capture the last one, and it is the most heavily guarded!" Is this the most Tripwire Interactive could come up with!?! Let's start with the AI, the worst I have ever seen. Soldiers running around in the battlefield, not looking for cover, acting like idiots, a Soviet soldier passes by a German soldier and completely ignores him! WOW, this is what must of happened during the real war! Glitches, they are everywhere! Soldiers sinking into the ground, soldiers spinning like they are at a disco party, running on the same spot, the glitches are endless! Awful story, one of the most boring stories I have ever encountered. I understand that it is during WWII and the Germans are fighting over the Russians etc... but come on! They could of made the story much better than what it is! And the objectives, always the same... just in a different place. Do this, then do that, then take over here, then there, etc... Really gets boring after a while. Overall I am disgusted by the level of poorness this "singleplayer" has to show. But the level of realism that it shows, from the breathing, to crouching and other stuff really makes you feel like you are in the battlefield. But overall, a complete disaster!

    Multiplayer - 6/10
Fun, not that fun but mostly fun, but the best is playing with your friends, as it can get very boring in a matter of a few hours. The only thing I have got to complain about is... why the hell are they advertising Rising Storm, which for me is a completely different game in this one!?! I really thought that Rising Storm is integrated into Red Orchestra 2 and it comes free, but OH NO, when I entered the game, you have to pay for Rising Storm, which I can understand, but why on earth would you integrate it with Red Orchestra 2 if they are two completely different games in two different places! And when I wanted to play one of the maps of Rising Storm in Red Orchestra 2, it did let me, but it strips away all the classes to the bare bone, what a waste. Honestly, you either make them separate games or charge for both Red Orchestra 2 and Rising Storm together, BUT overall the multiplayer is not bad, best with friends and family though!

Co-operation with your team is very important, going alone may only be any good if you are flanking, but going with a team is still always better
Voice acting... I really like the voice acting, I like it that for once when an enemy/ally is shot, they make a sound, shoot them in the throat and they will choke on their blood, shoot them anywhere else and they may say random things, shoot them in the head and they will usually go silent
Only negative thing I give is something not everyone may have, but I have an AMD card, and the game is poorly optimized for me, in the GOTY edition I cannot sprint due to massive framedrops, many other people experience this so I blame it on tripwire for not optimizing the game for our cards

Overall, this game is one of the, if not the, most realistic FPS out there, I highly recommend to have a team of friends and communicate with each other, it's huge fun!

The basic fact is that Red Orchestra 2 spoils you. Playing any other shooter, especially one that claims to be realistic, after going through a few rounds in RO2 is bound to be a disappointment.

The multiplayer of Red Orchestra 2 offers various interesting debate points about the realistic online shooter breed: praised by many, played by few. Forgetting some bugs and the (hopefully) soon to be addressed performance hiccups, Red Orchestra 2 is definitely an entertaining product that, online-wise, will guarantee months of brutal fun.

If you think both Battlefield and Call of Duty are too exaggerated and unrealistic, and feel Counter-Strike is too soft, Red Orchestra 2 might be the game for you. It doesn't appeal to us, though.
