The action is intense and out of panic in the middle of a tank bombardment and infantry invasion it happened that I have bayoneted my team mate... Sometimes I want to hide, want to survive don't care about objectives and take it personal with the bayonet on snipers and mindless grenade throwers. The feeling of immersion is there for sure. Sometimes you feel very little and vulnerable. Maybe a little less so than in the original with its very vast maps but still, the game gets to you. The only problem I have with the game are the aspects that it inherits from typical main straim FPS: spawn protection system, auto team balancing,.. for all those mechanics better solutions exist than the ones that have been implemented. Honestly I find the game mothering too much its players and restricting it. War is hell but stick to the rules and die a hero by the book type of thing. To bad the game does not offer full freedom for any strategy to intensify the real dirty war experience and let your instincts run free. I hope they make those configurable in server switches and network game browser filters.

There are (graphic) lag issues on 32-64 player servers. Turning down the graphics to high instead gave me 30 percent higher frame-rate up from a poor 20-25fps. Hope some future tweaking will bring further improvements. I don't doubt this game will be fully supported for many years to come, both by its community and Tripwire.
Red Orchestra 2 is a different league. For some there is no alternative.

After having about 60 hours in Beta and 6 or so on retail (Pretty much the same), I can safely say I have a good understanding of the game. I'm gonna keep this review short and to the point in a hope to let people know what the game is like.

    My specs - i7 @ 3.5, 260core216OC, 6 gigs, win7.

    -- The Good --

Graphics - 9 - Better than BC2 by far, but no where close as other PC specific titles. They have a very distinct feel stripped strait from the time period the game takes place in. The mood is dark and gritty as it should be and often times you will stop in combat to look at how much detail went into making each individual room look unique and authentic. For example I found a cellar on a map and it was detailed to the point of RPG type levels. I almost wanted to sit down at the desk and read the book near the lamp that gave off a nice warm glow while forgetting a battle for life and death was going on outside.

The lighting is probably the strong point with this game. Shadows are actual shadows and theirs no avoiding having to squint to figure out if that silhouette is an enemy in that dark corner.

After tweaking settings I'm able to get a stable 45+ with my rig and theirs no mouse lag like in other games even if you played at 30.

Game play - 9 - What else can be said about the game play other than it's as close to war as you might want to get. Each individual map supports new strategy when engaging your enemies whether that be close range or from a distance. You must master the class you pick in order to survive in the conditions presented to you and often times failure can be as exciting as victory. Choose the assault class and you need to be somewhat run and gun clearing out rooms and generally getting into the face of your enemy. Choose a class with bolt action and you're deadly at mid/high ranges and able to do deadly melee attacks with a bayonet if needed. Picking Support classes that use either MG's or Anti tank weaponry and you can now see how the strategy of the game unfolds. Nothing will ever be as fun as blowing up a tank who has killed 10 of your buddy's with some charges carefully placed as you run for cover.

Gun play is a huge selling point for this game and it shows. Weapons act just like they would in life, and the addition of free weapon movement and weapon collision with objects gives you a sense of depth other shooters don't have.

    - Sound -8- Not much to say other than it's good. Weapons seem a little week especially the MG and Mp40, but bolt action rifles sound amazing and blow your ears off. I don't really know much about weapon sounds but I suspect they do so I won't go into detail on this.

    - The Bad -

The game still crashes out for most people I know. I have experienced it many times myself but so far none since retail release (Crosses Fingers). Their are also many other bugs reported and people are generally having FPS issues on beast rigs.

Artillery strikes will end your good FPS until they subside. Good thing I'm hiding at that point anyways, but sometimes the frame stutter when it happens can ruin a combat situation.

Cover system while good in most situations can also get you killed. Once you learn how to work it however it becomes a valuable addition to your tactics (Blind firing around corners has saved me many times).

    The verdict?

It may not be everyone cup of tea, but by no means is this a "Bad" game. People may have issues with the bugs and performance but the core game play is rock solid and is easily one of the best shooters I have played in years.

The gameplay is still essentially RO with some essential features added (bullet penetration, being able to dynamically take cover behind objects of any height, controllable breathing and zooming, etc.). In some details it has a little less of that RO feel, though - guns barely sway even when held unsupported, for example. Perhaps it's better overall this way, it's hard to judge these things without taking all other aspects of the game balance into consideration, but it takes some getting used to for an RO veteran. There are also some assorted bugs - problems with the server browser, sometimes I miss a respawn ingame, now and then I get a wierd bug where the gun won't fire on first click.. none of which stops me from enjoying the game, but these little annoyances make it less fun than it should be, they make it feel more like the beta of a great game than a great game's live release. As for performance, my new pc runs it smoothly on 'ultra' (i7 not overclocked yet, 2x 6950 1GB, 8GB ram). The game is also playable on my old xp machine with 'normal' graphics (core2duo 2.4ghz, radeon 3870 512MB, 2GB RAM). I don't doubt the people reporting performance problems, but for my part I have no complaints. All in all it's a 10/10 game being held back by some problems as mentioned above, it could use some patching (which I trust Tripwire to provide in due time), still a great game and an easy 8/10 in spite of that. I'm new to the series, but being completely bored of the mindless console port BS that most shooters are now days, I gave this game a shot. This game is delightfully and refreshingly hard! No running and gunning here. You have to go slow, keep your head down and work with your team. The lack of floating names above people, the cover system, the bolt action rifles, the iron sights, the way you freak out when getting shot at, adds a learning curve (and immersion) that I think is missing from most other shooters. First couple sessions were frustrating while getting used to the feel of the game and the mechanics, I'll happily admit that. However I kept at it for a while, and I'm really enjoying it now! Not a game for the majority, but I'm really glad I went down the FPS path less traveled. If you aren't a S--- talking xbox live kiddie, you might like to join me. Expand

For whatever reason, the dev's added NPC tannk crewmembers. THis might be ok - if they did not also shoot the guns for you. Very easy to park a tank in a key location, particularly as Axis, and let your super-soldier NPC AI friends mow down everyone coming in. They are far more accurate than they should be, I have exploited this a few times - but it's not really fun, just obnoxious. The tanks also feel like moving a cardboard box around instead of driving.

Oh - the upgrade weapons! IN their infinite wisdom, they added a bunch of weapons that were never mass produced, such as the precusor to the AK-47. Instead of a deliberately paced rifle shooter, we end up with a blandly themed, poorly performing CoD World at War 2.0 - everyone and their mom is running around with some unusual weapon.

I hope the idiots that published this trash enjoy their Lamborghini - I will never buy anything from them - or associated with their names - again. Complete rip off - you get a handful of maps some of which don't even work. It also crashes frequently and the netcode is so bad pings average 300ms with a very fast connection.

Tripwire constantly say they go for realism, yet this game is full of weapons that unbalance the game that weren't even in the real battle for Stalingrad, and yet, the most popular SMG which is the PPSH41 with a drum mag is not even there until you grind a big chunk of your life in this already frustrating game (that unless the system bugs out and unlocks it for you instantly).

It seems that this game had no direction, no focus or specific audience, and Tripwire doesn't seem to have the skills to pull of such an ambitious project, and they think it can live alienating the existing fanbase with all their troll decisions.

Well, the result is that the previous game is a much better game, and the Scores speak for themselves.

I feel ashamed for recommending this game to my friends, my advice, if you want the best WW2 shooter, get Red Orchestra: Ostfront instead.

Being a RO1 player, I enjoyed the RO2 improvements to infantry combat (long range combat is less frustrating, I like how you need to manually zero in your sights if you want to hit targets past 100m) and the that movement system is overall less clunky. There were some things I didn't like about the game that aren't caused by bugs, such as killcams (almost every server has them enabled), and the idea that the devs combined a cover/use/give ammo command into one universal command; it was unclear to me that the cover button doubled as the use key until I learned it myself, with no proper documentation (no game manual).

In terms of visuals it might look average compared to other UE3 games like Bulletstorm, but remember that RO2 levels are extremely large with large view distances that can support up to 64 player tank + infantry battles. In that regard, it's relatively good and plus the atmosphere that's conveyed through the visuals is depressingly realistic. It also runs well on my PC on Ultra settings at around 40-70 fps which is good. Sound design is also excellent, guns sound like their real life equivalent and the music sets a great mood although I wish there was a checkbox to disable it (atm you need to manually set the music volume to 0)

Now, by this time many people now about the game's extremely buggy release and have refunded their purchase as a result; that was a poor decision since Tripwire is known for delivering quality, consistent FREE patches and updates that not only fix most of the glitches or bug, but they add upon the gameplay (see killing floor for an example). And as for the day 1 unlocks not working, they obviously didn't want that to happen and it was a bug that no one could expect; Tripwire didn't lie to the consumer on that because they didn't expect the unlocks to bug up. The only real bugs I get annoyed with are related to stat tracking (some servers track your stats, some don't) and the bug that doesn't let you fire your bolt action rifle when you zoom in initially.

Overall this is a good game that suffered an unfortunate buggy release (like Bad Company 2 and Black Ops on PC). If you like relatively hardcore shooters and have the patience to wait for Tripwire to fix the glaring bugs affecting gameplay (they already are releasing a patch which will fix a good deal of the current crash bugs) you should get this game. RO2 requires some patience and learning so don't just drop the game if you find it frustrating. This game will definitely shine in the future, once the free content patches and various mods flood in for it. For those of you wondering about my specs, I have: i5-760 2.8ghz, 4gb ddr2 ram, EVGA GeForce 460SE 1024mb with the beta 280.19 drivers running at ultra detail in 1680x1050.

I love the great atmosphere, that is much harsher than in other FPS. This is because of the unique mixture of realism, sounds of explosions, dying and wounded comrades, the suppression mechanics, WWII typical graphics etc.- I think this is as close as a current computer game can get to real war experience.

They didn´t mention it would be a bad call of duty clone. They didn´t mention it would not work on alot of rigs. The reason for releasing this beta instead of a finished product was simple: money. With BF3 and Modern warfare 3 soon to be released aswell, tripwire figured if they were first on the scene they could get alot of people waiting for those games to buy RO2 and play while they awaited the other games. It worked with the preorder, on the day of RO2´s release there where around 10.000 players at peak hours. After a week that number was less than 3000. Now, six months later, this game is stuggles to get above 1000. Is it a good beta then? Sadly not even that. Besides the bucketload of bugs, still unadressed six months after release there are still alot of things that will never be changed. The biggest and most gamebreaking one of these things is the netcoding. When you fire a weapon, you have to lead for ping. And because the ping is never consistent, you have to guess where your shot will land. We can thank Ramm for that one, among other things. This might be fixed by modders, who in all likelyhood will do a better job than the amateurs at tripwire. Add to this a less than customer friendly attitude of some of the teripwire team *cough* Rammjaeger *cough* this experience has lead me to decide to never spend any more my hard earned money on products coming from Tripwire.

We can't talk 'bout realism if a PTRS round is able to pass through the front armor of a tank turret and kill its gunner, if a soldier can heal himself with a patch after taking so 2-3 rifle bullets at close range but a binocular stab or a bayo kills instantly, if someone is not able to lay down near a wall 'cause "he's too close to it", if grenades are deadly only if you throw them really close to the opponents (if someone knows how deadly nades are)... We can't talk 'bout a complete game since there are still bad bugs (falling through the terrain after spawning, getting stuck to the walls with a tank or in a hole while trying to find cover, watching through texture etc etc), the game is not completed (campaign still missing, 2 bad coded tanks only and still 9 maps, some of them are really unbalanced), there's lack of players ( at the moment, 500 at max as far as I know and see) which means that there's a lack of general interest, there's not a proper cheat detection (just have a look on youtube), it requires a good rig otherwise you'll go pixel hunting most of the times... It's too expensive for what it really offers. I still play the game and still hope it will get better, but for now I suggest you to save your moneys and play something else untill it will be fixed, new maps will come out and, hopefully, we will have the same feeling of playing Ostfront back. If you like sniping and don't mind sitting at the same spot for 10 minutes until some poor sod enters your machinegun scope so you can snipe him off with single fire, then this is the game for you. I mean as a paying customer people should be fuming, instead "It keeps crashing, buggy as hell but still a great game". Game is poorly optimized, crashing bugs, broken cover and leveling system, outdated physics, servers bugged, some ranked servers are unranked.. you got the idea. An epic waste of money, should of used on horse racing bets instead that's all I can say.

But I know Tripwire won't let this game die. They are 20 guys working against the clock to bring their vision to life and they won't rest until it's working without major flaws.
Killing Floor and RO1 had many bugs on launch date and now they are completely playable.
I'd also like to point out that BF: BC2 had a non functional server browser on launch.

I'd say that the game easily deserves an 8 out of 10 in its current state. I'd also like to point out that it's 23.99 in many places (or 29.99-35.99 in others) which is a lot less than 49.99 (standard price for PC games).

The maps are big compared to some other FPS games I've played, it's a very tactical game and requires a little thought before moving towards a position (Territory), running and gunning can and will get you killed very quickly.

I haven't tried all the weapons in the game yet but of those I have used they seem effective and do the job.

The best part of the game for me is atmosphere, the sound of a weapon in the distance or artillery raining down on my position is very good.

The game does have a few problems, cover/use/bandage assigned to 1 key needs to be changed, lockdown timer needs to go, that stops any kind of tactical play as the game then becomes a mad rush for the cap before the timer runs out, these are small things but some were mentioned during the beta and are still in the full release. I only hope that Tripwire are reading their forums and the Steam forums and taking the feedback from the players as a good thing, I want the game to be perfect and at the moment it isn't, some players do have major problems so hopefully they will be fixed.

I enjoy the game but the little irritating bugs, some mentioned above, stop me from giving the game a higher rating.

There have been major improvements since this game first came out. I originally gave it a 5 due to stability issues in the multiplier segment. Pros:
-Now they allow Modded Maps from STEAM!
-The shooting is realistic (no virtual crosshairs) -You must be very careful and precise with your shots -Challenging and rewarding for every kill -It's quite fun if you have a collaborative team

-You can feel the horrors of WWII

Cons: -Single player is absolutely worthless
    -You will die A LOT.
-Some poor map design because of the openness.

I rated this game higher because its a better take on FPS. You can't play it like Call of Duty and you shouldn't play it like call of duty. If you are up for a challenge you will love this game.

Maybe if more money and time had been applied to the graphics, it would be getting better reviews. But because it requires a more thoughtful approach, and rewards teamwork much more than twitchy reflexes, it is probably not a game that will satisfy the gaming hordes anyway. And maybe that's a good thing. I am so thankful it has not been dumbed down from the original for a mass audience.

The small FOV, zooming and the way weapons and iron sights cover much of your screen makes close quarters combat a very chaotic affair, leaving sniping from a distance the most viable option most of the time. Machineguns are as useless as they were in the previous Red Orchestra game. In short, weapons are modelled realistically, but their application is not. Soldiers move around way too fast and erratic, and the game pace is more like a traditional FPS than a realistic wargame. In addition, the gameplay itself is very chaotic and it is difficult to judge exactly what is going on, who is attacking where, where the enemy is etc. The game seems to be designed to please both the realism-oriented crowd and traditional FPS-players, with gameplay and pace pleasing the latter and the weapons modelling pleasing the former. Perhaps that is the game's weakness: it tries to be two things at the same time. Despite all of this, I've had some very memorable moments with the game so far, particularly when the teamplay has worked out. There is also no other FPS out there that even tries to model WWII squad-based warfare to this degree AFAIK, so if you like the concept, that alone would be a good reason to give this one a try. The cover system touted by the game simply does not work. In theory it is groundbreaking, but if it doesn't work -- and it doesn't -- well, then it's just an annoyance. And, because at least 4 other functions are bound to the same (control) key, it creates far more problems in practice than it purports to solve in theory.

The controls are very awkward. The game will not let you go prone on flat ground for no clear reason. The sound cuts in and out. The hit detection needs work. Spawn killing is common in the game, and the developer has yet to figure out that suddenly deciding that a piece of ground a player has been standing on for 20 is now a "restricted area" for a new enemy spawn doesn't work; it just frustrates the innocent player who suddenly finds himself dead for no apparent reason.

As I said, this game could be so much more. I would raise my rating to 7 if the bugs and performance issues were solved. As far as game play, balance and control issues, well, that speaks to the core game design; it is what it is, and "hoping" for it to change is simply hope.

There are few maps released with the game, and as far as I can tell, they've only released a single tank battle map. Things like being able to range in your weapon's sights go completely unused, as there aren't any maps that are large enough to really require adjustment. When they fix the mechanics, the crashing, the menus, the server browser, the horrible lag during game play (I far exceed the recommended requirements), and the fact that there are only a handful of maps, the game might be worth buying. When I play multiplayer, it is because I want to play with other people, the increadibly dumb & boring bots should have been restricted to the uninteresting singleplayer part of the game. Also, the maps are often to narrow, and I was dissapointed that there were no real Conquest mode a la Battlefield, the game modes in the game are quite boring. The realism and gameplay aspects of this game is great, but the content is not. Expand

There is absolutley no other way to describe the game other than the fact you can have it extremely realistic or play it like CoD, but in the end this game is a sure buy. And i have to admit, my favorite thing about this game has to be the sway of the gun, there is no pathetic easy no scope, you either have to be lucky or just keep shooting until a bullet hits if aiming from the hip. I cant tell you how many times i have ran out of ammo with no time to reload and hiding behind a door watching Germans poor in to kill me and as soon as they see me! STAB, my bayonet sticks into them just for 2 more Germans to rush in and fight me up close and personel. Just buy the game and you will know what i mean. And if the bugs are discouraging you from buying it, know that they ironed out the game so its almost perfect now besides a few graphical glitches and stupid A.I. lol. But in all honesty i have 26 hours played and i still am craving to jump on and see what happens next. Pros:Intense action, strategic gameplay, Teamwork

Cons: Multiplayer lag, only 2 tanks, some maps have horrible designs to benefit snipers to an extremely high amount, NO MEDICS.

Conclusion:Instant buy, grab a friend to play wih you, be my meat shield when you buy the game so i can get close enough to throw some C4 on those Panzer IV tanks :p

I got this game during the week it came out and was quite impressed with just how 'right' Tripwire Interactive were able to get the perfect balance between realism and gameplay advertised as the game's selling point. My only gripe with the game is that the single-player is a little glitchy at times, and that the multiplayer community can be a little shakey at times.

Haha I just read machinima's review, and it is probably the most poorly written review on earth. A 5 year-old could've done better. With the SDK being released in a week, and several mods in a couple of months, this game will be limitlessly fun. I have to give it a 10, because although they epicly failed at blending realism and arcade tactics, the core game is amazing. Eye-candy graphics running at a solid 60 FPS on my under $900. computer with almost everything set to "ultra" - including the outstanding "WWII MOVIE" graphics setting - the games pull you in nicely and the sounds echoing from every shot fired on the maps is of very high quality. This one has Tanks, artillery barrages, machine guns that can rip through buildings walls, explosive charges for engineers, sub machine guns, rifles, pistols, grenades, smoke grenades, anti-tank rifles, sniper rifles, terrific maps, ***and in release this week the fantastic Software Development Kit that will let us make our own maps for free - just like Red Orchestra 1 was set up in 2007 - Expect dozens of free maps to start flooding into release by the time Christmas / New Years hit - just like it went after the release of the SDK with Red Orchestra 1. Tripwire has new tanks and half tracks scheduled for ( free) release soon. That's how Tripwire rolls - Years of Free content will be following up RO2's release. I'm giving it a 10 because it is now my favorite game. *That rates a 10 * But RO2 did have some early issues that are since patched now, and some users with the variety of systems out there still get a bug here and there ( thankfully it isn't on any of our systems running it.) I noticed about 12 patches since September. Both of our systems run RO2 both of our RO2 games rock solid - and we can now run them at the highest resolution & on the highest quality settings (except shadows on high) since 2 months ago so the patches were pretty effective. Since the patches worked so well and I have played it so much - this is a re-review - and it goes up from my previous lower score to a 10. Expand

It is in it's own class when it comes to historical accuracy. If the hitcode straight from the 90s doesn't impress you, the way the game runs like you are on a Pentium 2 certainly will. As far as WW2 accuracy it kind of fails, in that Germans are handed out extremely rare prototype weapons like candy, and all the maps favor that particular side. It's as if someone designing the game has struggled with their impartiality when they looked at the two warring nations. As if they wish history would rewrite itself based on what happens in a given game of RO2.

"Singleplayer" is just mindless bots and shouldn't exist. The game is half finished, if that, in just about any area. And most of all, it's just not fun. There isn't an endearing game underneath all the broken issues, just an uninspired semi realistic WW2 shooter. Any given multiplayer WW2 game outshines it in that department, and any realism shooter out-reals it.

Give this stinker a wide berth.

Crammed in this exciting sequel is a veritable smorgasbord of new and refreshing features, including fully modelled and meticulously detailed tank interiors, new game modes to appeal to a wider audience and an amazing attention to detail. This is all on top of the already refined core gameplay elements that were already present in the first game.

However, it has been a rocky road to release and I suspect what will be an even rockier road to a stable release version. Despite being free from the pressures of an outside publisher and having the pleasure to set its own development cycle, Tripwire Interactive has somehow managed to shoot themselves in both feet.
Despite the successes of 'Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45' and 'Killing Floor', Tripwire still very much feel like an amateur game studio. The general lack of company structure and the lack of game release experience have led to a very poorly executed and managed beta.

The months that led up to release were plagued with serious performance issues, subsequently pushing the release date back by an entire fortnight and delaying the beta. Had the beta that was 'too buggy to release' been put out earlier, and communication between the developers and beta testers been better, release would have been much smoother.

Nevertheless, if you can somehow manage to figure out and get past many of the technical performance and optimisation issues the game feels and plays fantastically. At the very heart of Red Orchestra is the multiplayer and Tripwire have definitely delivered a solid multiplayer experience. The pace picks up a little compared to RO1, gone are the days of tediously long walks to objectives. The game has been made â

TWI have admitted they ARE trying to make a game more accessible, the reason being money, of course. But in the process of trying to make this game "More accessible" they've in fact made it f***ing terrible.
    Why?
Well, there is nothing for the Cod and BF crowed here that Cod or Bf doesn't do better. And there is nothing for the old crowed that Project Reality or Arma doesn't do better. Ro2 is neither hardcore or arcade, it's neither, it is a jelly fish floating aimlessly in-between. The hardcore fans hate it because it's to arcade. And the arcade fans hate it because it's just a rubbish attempt at trying to be arcade. Ro2 is simply put, a disaster. The core dynamics of the game play contradict each other. Weapons are accurate out to infinite ranges, even if you are suppressed and/or have just sprinted 300 meters. Many a time I have pinned down a rifleman at short ranges with an MG only to have him quickly pop up and one shot me on the face. This leads me back to the point of Ro2 not being hardcore or arcade, they haven't tried to make the game either of the two, they've simply just put the game play features into one game. And it doesn't work AT ALL.
The only thing from Ro1 that is still good in Ro2 is the name of the game. Nothing else. The large open maps from Ro1 we all came to love are gone, now, you are left with the same CQC urban cod fests, and it's pathetic. The sounds is terrible, rifles sound like pop guns and arty soungd like fire works, you can actually hear your own footsteps and breathing over and arty barrage. The graphics are meh, but who cares about them. Sorry TWI. This game is absolutely hopeless, I will wait for the modders to make something good out of it. Until then, enjoy your ruined credibility and learn from your mistakes. In the process of trying to make new fans, you lost all your old ones. Hope it was worth it.

    - This is the main reason most ro vets abandoned or criticise the game.

    5. Initial 8,000? customers left within a month of release. Among them are ro vets/ tactical gamers.
    - It's not fun arcade shooter, not even good enough tactical shooter either.

The technical support area is constantly having people blocked for doing nothing more than stating the truth; a forty dollar game is expected to be a finished game. Everyone can forgive a few bugs, but it goes to a whole new level. Also, many people purchased it on Steam and are (as usual) being denied refunds for a game that many cannot even launch. And that's not counting the fact that many are unable to play AND still having gig's upon gig's of updates thrown at them...just to have the game still not work.

The developers (and I'm using that term loosely) have a great game system...just let us know when it's anywhere's near actually playable for the rest of us.

The game is buggy. It has crashed several times on me, and kept Steam (arghh... Steam) crashing alongside.

The game is buggy. It has crashed several times on me, and kept Steam (arghh... Steam) crashing alongside. However, this happened never during actual gameplay. Sometimes the servers do not refresh and you have to exit the game. The performance on my high end setup runs great on high, a bit stuttery on ultra even though I can run most games on highest with no problems. This one is a bit of a wild card in terms of performance. The graphics, while a lot of people say...suck, are not terrible at all. It's not a great looking game by any means, but a decent looking game it is. Reminds me of Brothers In Arms: Hells Highway mixed with COD2 and BF2. Single player does look better than MP for sure. Speaking of SP, not much to say about it. It's plain. Uninspiring. Typical. Dead A.I. pretty much sums it up.
Multiplayer is why you most likely got this game. And it's different. For those who never played Red Orchestra this is going to be a tough pill to swallow if you're used to Modern Warfare. The game is very tactical, brutal, and punishing. It's also rewarding. The weapons do plenty of damage, even though I question some of the recoil from semi-automatic rifles and assault weapons. It's pretty much one shot kill. The maps are large and with plenty of buildings and rooms to go into, but fall flat in design and character. They feel like they were made by modders not something that was shipped on shelves. But the gameplay is rock solid if a little buggy. Some adjustment to sensitivity and you are all set. It's a fun game when you enter a lag free server. Do find those, trust me. I love how when you crouch behind cover you don't have to stand up to aim. You just aim and you'll automatically pop up a little bit. Or you can use the cover system. It's a great choice. I also love how easy it is to strafe, and the animation is great from your perspective ... not so much from others. Overall give this game a buy if you like a more difficult, rewarding FPS that is pure PC. It does have bugs, and it's not perfect, nor the prettiest, but if you like the first one of more of a COD4 style S&D gameplay, this is a solid buy, bugs and everything. Just don't expect it to blow you away.

    Solid 7.5 out of 10.

It's so unconvincing. Single player is worthless and just plain unplayable. I can only ever find a couple of populated servers, with a large majority bots to substitute the empty slots. At least the game runs at a stable framerate online, but games like Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway look and run a whole heck of a lot better. The controls are so clunky compared to the original RO. Suppression effects are way too exaggerated in this game; in the original RO, the screen only flickers a little when a bullet whizzes by you. When you get suppressed in this game (which is all too often), the whole screen turns black and white, making it impossible to see anything. No one cooperates as a team because they're more concerned about getting kills and unlocking weapons than actually playing the objective. The maps in my opinion are too small... some more emphasis on vehicles like in the original RO would be much appreciated. Overall this game feels like another trashy, fast-paced console shooter. If anything, it's more approachable than the first game, despite being more complex (an achievement!), but the core gameplay remains the same: stay low, be keenly aware of your surroundings, and know when to rush and when to bunker up being solid cover.

This game is not easy, but the raw satisfaction of knowing that every weapon in the game can kill you with a well placed shot makes it "fair" for everyone: yes, a semi-auto rifle is "superior" to a bolt-action rifle, but if you learn how to shoot straight, you won't feel outgunned. There's enormous potential for self-improvement in this game, and it's multidimensional: it doesn't only involve getting kills.

A solid 9/10, despite some unavoidable bugs.

(NOTE: During the two weeks beta, the game was patched 3-5 times, and -a lot- of bugs were squashed. Plus, TWI has an excellent reputation of supporting their games (with free DLCs to boot!). so yeah, if you're hesitant you could wait... or since there's a practically limitless potential for self-improvement, you just might as well get it now ;) It's -very- playable, and loads of gritty fun. I'll be playing this for a long time to come).

I have enjoyed the few hours of the single-player. And the multi-player is surely a 100x better.

On seeing the rating this game took, I was shocked as a 76/100 on steam for a game of such engineering deserves a hell'of'a'lot more. The main complaints such as the bugs/glitches can be easily fixed with patches, as we saw with Empire: Total War.

At the end of the day, RO2 is an amazing game. Try it and you'll understand. Oh and make sure the volume is turned on!

A lot of these reviews were from release day bugs. Most the problems are fixed now. The game is a highly realistic WWII FPS, and I love it. I bought exactly what I paid for. Plus, free DLC? Come on, what's not to love? Imagine if COD did that for you. It's brutal, and unforgiving. But oh so satisfying.

That is this games crowning achievement, make you feel like your in a dirty war with death all around you. Sounds are amazing and really pull you in. Graphics are good, and game-play is spot on(if you like this type of slower pace battles). 64 player servers are truly epic as well and pull you into this is war even more. There are a few bugs on release which can be a pain. But then again almost all games do so Im not about to give it a zero because of it. I believe tripwire has a great track record of fixing these things so I'm just taking off a point for that. Bottom line your either this type of player or not. This game lacks EVERYTHING that the first game had, EVERYTHING.

Let me start off with my biggest irritation.

The game feels empty, dull and uninspired. The maps are always the same **** couple of buildings here and there. Random and unthought roads and cover here and there and they call it a map.

The gameplay consists of you running around just searching for the enemy and hoping to actualy find him, when you do you just shoot at eachother until the war is **** over. The maps and the gameplay are so dull I often play for 10 minutes and quit. It's just not enjoyable, it's so repative and boring .. And the better you are at the game the more boring it gets. Because once you actualy relize and get skilled, the game becomes of you shooting people like pigs without any resistance.

The classes that the game offers (Rifleman, Squad Leader) also feel like there is no difference or detail to them, it's just all about the weapon you get when you choose. NOTHING else.

The graphics are **** and the optimization is bad, this is primarely because they decided to use the HORRIBLE Unreal Engine. It instead became Blurred textures & Bloom: The Videogame.

This game lacks what WW2 shooters need. That is, big maps, slow gameplay and most important of all NOT DULL gameplay! RO2 does not offer any of this.

The game is really simple often divided into Objective A, B and C.

Soviets attack A B and C and the Wehrmacht defends A, B and C. This never stops and goes on for eternities until somebody wins, when they win there is a cheesy themesong playing with zero detail and feel to it. And you just feel like "Oh wow, it's finaly over"

Played this ****ty mess for 103 hours on Steam, I think I deserve the right to talk so bad about it. I've had it.

Tripwire Interactive has also attempted to attract more idiots to this game by making free weekends almost every month what it feels like, and constant discounts and sales. But it just isn't working.

The game is **** if you want a good WW2 game consider something else. RO: Ostfront and the mod Darkest Hour for it are 100 times better.

    Good luck.

The first week after release was hard going. An abundance of quality control issues reduced the experience and left one feeling that a couple more weeks on the Beta table wouldn't have gone a miss. I purposely missed out on the Beta because I wanted to play a more finely honed and complete game and felt a little disappointed at the final offering. However, I've experienced the developer Tripwire at work and seen them take Killing Floor from a UT2004 mod to simple retail release and then render that release into something very special at no extra cost for what amounted to expansion pack updates. All the while, bug patches and game play balancing continued in the background making for a very solid game.

Based on that experience I expect no less for Red Orchestra 2 and that influenced my purchase. And true to form a flurry of recent patches are beginning to bring stability and order. I enjoy the full spectrum of FPS games going back to Halo where I first got the bug, through Star Wars Republic Commando, the Battlefields, CODs, F.E.A.R., and the list goes on. I love something about all of them and enjoy the eclectic diversity they bring to the gaming community. Of all the FPS I've played, Red Orchestra 2 is way up there on mission strategy and a sense of realia. The pace can be as sedate or 'run and gun' as you like and there's no sense of loss finishing with a low kill count as long as you've added to your team's task in hand. And what a task that can be!

All in all, I'm enjoying Red Orchestra 2 immensely. The player classes and weapons offer great variety and you can take a more laid back approach as a rifleman or lead a squad or the whole platoon. The environment is realistic and well researched as the experts in the Tripwire forum will attest. The Unreal Engine offers sound game physics and unique additions such as cover add to the already full arsenal of player movement. I've never needed sparkly larger than life graphics at the expense of quality game play and I'm glad that's the case in Red Orchestra 2. The game looks good but plays superbly and that's what counts I love the range of architecture with bombed out open areas and rickety covering to close fire fights in apartments.

Well done so far on Red Orchestra 2. It's going to be a classic and I have every reason to believe it'll continue to be supported well into the future. As with the first offering and Killing Floor, the community has its' set of modding tools and they will certainly be utilised.

Clearly Tripwire was in over there heads, and no amount of false 10 ratings here is going to save it from the truth, it is just plain bad. The graphics are ok, but shadows are yet to be optimized correctly. Physics are terrible, and dated. This is the Unreal 3 engine and, for whatever reason, they managed to fail on every level when it came to taking advantage of a proven engine. The sounds is great, but not a break-through in innovation and attention to detail. It is a World War II game, and it sounds like one, respectively.

The gameplay is as you would expect from a Red Orchestra game. The problem here is that Tripwire is attempting to implement features, such as a cover system, into the game that are simply broken and implemented incorrectly. It just looks out of place. Team work is limited, and unreliable. You simply can not expect everyone to be a mature adult when it comes to interacting with a simulation shooter.

The value is what I would include, to sum this up, as the compensating factor. Tripwire has promised free updates, and mod tool support. For this reason I see no way this game could completely fail. I would be hard pressed to say it can compete in the coming months with franchising giants like EA. Time will tell, and will be the ultimate saving grace for Red Orechestra 2. It is certainly not worth investing money into now.

Tired of your Call of Duties? Had enough of Bad Company? If so then it's understandable that you're looking at purchasing RO2. But before you do, please consider this: No matter how good the core of a game is, if it's so buggy and clumsy that it makes it difficult for you to get any enjoyment out of playing it whatsoever, would you want to blow your hard earned readies on it? Probably not.

I shall explain. What drew me to Red Orchestra was the 'realism' tag that everyone associated with the game is tagging it with. It has a cover system, you can blind fire around corners, go prone, drive a tank with other people, kill people in one shot. In theory it sounds fantastic, but in practice it could not have been implemented any worse than it has been. The cover system is clunky and more often than not will actually aid your enemies in killing you. I spent hours wondering why as soon as I popped my head around a corner I would get shot by someone around the corner who could not have seen me unless he was endowed with x-ray vision. One of the biggest flaws is that of telling players apart. Fair enough, WW2 Russia was drab, burning buildings providing the only colour against a bleak, snowy landscape. But when you cannot tell your team mates apart, especially at a distance expect a lot of team kills (the decision not to include a visual tagging aid to distinguish who is who is baffling, realism or no). This in itself is poor, but when there is an option to punish accidental team killing implemented it further detracts from the game. It makes me wonder just how much thought went into the design process with silly mechanics such as this. Another thing that didn't help the games plight is the horrendous lag on the bigger battles. I play with a fast connection but every battle that was 45 players and over tended to chug badly. The pings shoot up and it makes it unplayable. This is a server issue and can be fixed, but it's still a drawing point of the game and it never should have rolled out with such an unnecessary issue.

In the grand scheme of gaming, I've always thought that graphics are just a frivolous extra that should never take precedent over gameplay, but the player animations are noticeably awful and again, this helps to ruin what could have been a very different experience. The are a few good points however. The wealth of class options is fantastic and really caters for everyone. Want to play an Anti-Tank gunner? How about a Squad Leader or Commander? Well go right ahead. In the bigger battles when/if they fix the server load issues it could make for an incredibly varied and tense battle. I also love the ability to play from inside a tank as a driver, gunner, or the machine gunner. The community appears passionate about the game which will help to convince Tripwire to rectify the bugs. I also enjoyed some of the neat little quirks, such as having to change your barrel as a machine gunner if it overheats too much.

Overall, in the state that it's currently in I would advise everyone to look elsewhere for their WW2 kicks. The game promises realism and yet delivers frustration in large quantities. I hope that Tripwire rectify some of the issues with the game as it has the potential to be great. But as of this moment in time I do not believe it should have left alpha testing.

The multiplayer of Red Orchestra 2 offers various interesting debate points about the realistic online shooter breed: praised by many, played by few. Forgetting some bugs and the (hopefully) soon to be addressed performance hiccups, Red Orchestra 2 is definitely an entertaining product that, online-wise, will guarantee months of brutal fun.
