Re:Call busts out the gate with clever gameplay systems that deal with memory manipulation and puzzle solving. It’s an additive affair as you attempt multiple times to get the story straight and progress the narrative. However, the balance of gameplay and storytelling is lost in the final chapters as the narrative is the true highlight of the experience. Make this your next weekend game; you won’t regret it.

Over the course of multiple, inventive chapters, I unravel why I’ve been gifted these weird abilities, how they came to be in the first place, and the conspiracy that connects everything together. While at times the more juvenile dialogue — and one, slightly frustrating, area — had me worried the game’s threads wouldn’t stitch together in a completely satisfying way, RE:CALL stuck the landing. In its customary fashion, the ending is dominated by a choice, which means different possible conclusions. But whichever way the player leans, this is a game well worth experiencing.

RE:CALL has an excellent, mysterious story and unique time travel mechanics, but it struggles with gameplay consistency at its halfway mark. However, the fun puzzles, text-based choices, and memorable cast of characters definitely make it a title easy to recommend.

Combining several gameplay styles with a protagonist-switching, fourth-wall-breaking story makes RE:CALL feel almost experimental at times. But since its disparate elements ultimately work reasonably well together, it’s an experiment in storytelling that could be worth checking out.

It’s hard not to hold Re:Call’s larger stumbles against it, only because any honest investment in its original ideas and systems fails to come together in a satisfying or rewarding way. Some of its most exciting or unusual puzzles far outclass later sections with rote stealth vision-cone mechanics. Re:Call is worth investigating with a playthrough - just be prepared for a paradigm shift just when things are getting good.
