ID failed his project on PC.
They blame drivers that caused such problems as run-time reloading textures, crashes. But i think they should blame themselves.
few words about the game. boring and I've seen already this features in another games. I don't even realise WHY it is 21+ GB?

At first, I couldn't even run the game which I pre-ordered from Steam (never again!). But ATI has released a specific set of drivers for these Rage issues and ... they WORK ! I no longer seem to have any noticeable graphical issues - the pop-ins, shearing, etc., are gone. Here is a link to the ATI Rage page at AMD:

    http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU121AMDCatRagePerfDriver.aspx

For those of you who are not running Windows 7 with an ATI card, maybe check to see if nVidia has a fix out for this.

I agree 100% with all those saying this game should not have been released with all these issues - it makes Bethesda and Id look bad and makes me lose confidence and trust. I know now after this that I will NEVER pre-order a PC game again. I will wait until the game is released so I can gauge what the issues are. When it comes to PC games, or maybe even consoles games, patience is indeed a virtue. Don't give in to the pre-order hype andbait ... and don't trust the offical"Critics". Look at the difference here at Metacritic between the Critics score and the User score - Wow! Now about the game itself .... for those of you expecting a Fallout experience, this ths game is NOT Fallout - it doesn't have the great atmosphere and feeling fallout 3 and New Vegas have. It's also quite linear - you can't really explore as much as you can in Fallout. You have to stick to the set pathways. Want to get off the path and climb up that rock face a bit - forget it! But still there are things I like about it. The scenery is interesting and the graphics are clear and detailed, but not revolutionary, once the issues are mostly gone. Graphics are just a bit above those of Fallout. And unlike Fallout, you get to drive a vehicle. The AI Mobs are interesting and pretty tough. The game is always feeding you quests, big and small. This game is like a mix between Fallout, borderlands and Doom, and it can be intense at times. The game has a little circular minimap like the GTA minimap. I wish there was a way to get a larger, more detailed map, like in Fallout. When you have to go somewhere, they trace a path for you on the minimap like in GTA so you know where to go..

To be honest, if I'd have known beforehand what this game was really like, I sure as heck wouldn't have pre-ordered it and would have waited until the price dropped to about $29 or something like that. I pray to God that Behtesda does not drop the ball with Skyrim. I had a lot of issues with Old World Blues DLC that never seemed to get fixed and now the Rage issues - what's wrong Bethesda, are you maybe too overworked and don't have time for testing??? At least I've learned a lesson - I will not pre-order Skyrim - I WILL wait to see the reviews. If the game is too buggy on PC, I'll get it on PS3 instead. I WILL learn to be patient and not be so impulsive in future - saving me money and frustration. Thought I had learned that lesson after my experiences with Civ 5 lol - Gee but I'm so tired of companies releasing betas and treating us customers like guinea pigs - wish they all had the same attitutde Blizzard has - you release a game when it really IS ready. Don't companies test their bloody games anymore? Don't they care about quality control or how we consumers perceive their companies and products? Guess not.

Anyhow, after considering the games graphical issues, and then the fix from ATI, and then after considering how the game makes me feel and its potential, I give it a 5 ... which I am willing to increase or lower at sometime in the future.

Another shameful console port from a major developer, unworthy of PC release. Stay clear of this one. Blurry textures from the 90s, no graphics options to speak of, Press ENTER to start, consolified user interface, and so fort. All the major red flags are here, this is a game for consoles and not for PC.

I really enjoyed this game; slick and fast first person action, this game pulls you along with story and missions to keep you hooked. [Story] A meteor has hit the earth and killed off the humans. You are a survivor thanks to having been dormant in a protected Ark. You emerge from the Ark to find a modern day wild west with The Authority trying to dominate, colonies of survivors, bandits, mutants, cool looking clothes and tattoos ! Comparisons to Borderlands will be inevitable but they are different games - both great. Commerce and construction of in-game items is straight forward, essential and fun - do not miss out - build as many robots as you can and use them when you are outnumbered in the game. This game hits the FPS sweet spot, after 45 hours of game play I really wish there had been more side missions. I am hoping for DLC : )

[Challenges] There is a main story has missions and in each colony there are side missions to accomplish; racing missions to upgrade your car, commando missions to clean out infested mutant tunnels, item missions to build or acquire special items, snipping missions to defend transactions. On normal difficulty I was able to accomplish 90% of the missions the first time through without a reload - I am OK with that; if you are an FPS dog then turn it up a notch! In FPS sections, the game space and environment is big enough with lots of room for flanking, covering, sniping, run and gun; all the usual elements that we have come to love in FPS. Weapons are awesome - especially the Revolver - quite apropos - construct all items and try them all out. Also, the AI is quite good so get your caffeine; I especially enjoyed the AI behaviour depending on damaged limb and physics of the moment - hilarious ! The end story is weak and kind on makes you feel like Halo2 - suddenly it is over....The physics and the control of the fully upgraded dune buggy in one of the bumpier maps made one minigame race very very very hard, it took me 30 races to take first place, compared to 1-4 for all others!

[Audience and Skill level] All skills levels will like this Game Smoothie - a juicy blend of Quake4, Borderlands and Fallout 3 in a beautifully painted landscape tall glass ! Run down to the Steam diner and pick it up now !

[MyPC] i7-2600K 3.4GHz / ASUS Z68 ProGen3 / 8Gig RAM / Radeon 6870 / 1920x1200 / W7 PRO SP1 [Controls] I played with a keyboard and trackball. Keys are easy to remap and show up in the on-screen instructions. Sweet. Controls are tight Tight TIGHT; switching weapons quickly and using the perfect combination as you run and gun is always great fun. This was FPS heaven.
[Graphics] The game world is simply beautiful, but you will need to use a custom configuration file to make this game playable; find it on the Steam Forum by FusedCore {thanks guy}, it will take you ONLY 10 mins. It amazes me that Id released a game crippled by poor video configurations - but this is a solved issue now. The game never hiccuped after the custom config file: I used the Hi-End config. [Sound] I always play with headphones; voice acting is professional, 3D sound is great, SFX bang on, the music is surprisingly serious and ominous - next time lighten up guys ; )

[Replay+AlternativeModes] This game has a bunch of co-op only levels {Legend} and multiplayer; I should probably check these out.

[Children] Adults only, no if ands or buts.

A lot of the texture resolutions are like something from the year 2000 and 'megatextures' were supposed to be 'the big thing' about this game. I reckon it will be the last iD game I will buy, considering how they have handled the PC launch. I can't rate the game for anything other than being broken...I'd love to, but I can't.

By the normal distance you keep from textures as you normaly play, all you see is a razor sharp, very well texturixed game. Gameplay is the generic FPS slyle but is very good. AI is very predictable but that is the same with every game I ever played. I'm not commenting about the storyline on this since I didn't finished the game yet, but I'm liking it so far. But many ppl here are complaining that the they can't run the game and that every this and that are crap including the story... How can they know if the storyline is bad or not if they can't even run the game? I bought it originally for PS3, and the first thing I noticed when emerging from the Ark and looking around the world was that it was beautiful. Unquestionably, a gorgeous looking gameworld, but when I then turned left to exit the gangway, I noticed something Instantly off-putting: The textures of many close-up walls and surfaces were dropping in about a half-second late, which just looked cheap. I played the game through the first mission and returned to the quest-giver (voiced, I beleive, by John Goodman) and noticed even more late texture dropping. After playing the first mission I could tell the game was something special, the physics, the feel of the gun, the enemy AI, all brilliant. But the texture issue was seriously souring my experience. So, I called up gamestation and asked them to put me a 360 copy aside. I went down, traded it in, came back and started afresh. Now the texture problem was barely noticeable. I only noticed it at all cos i was looking for it, but even then, its very rarely an issue. So I started playing through, and as some other reviews point out, the first hour or two are a little slow. This isn't such a bad thing though, since alot of it is tutorial and meant to break you in slowly, revealing some of the games mechanics ang light-RPG elements. When you do get into a scuffle though, the game comes alive with a vengeance. The weapons feel heavy and deadly and they sound and feel superb. You can tell this game was made by the godfathers of the FPS genre. When I got my hands on the 12 gauge shotgun a few missions in, I was in FPS heaven! The enemy AI is brilliantly unpredictable. Enemies will scale and vault scenery as they rush you, they'll retreat in fear as you waste their friends, they'll drop to the floor as bullets whizz over their heads, showing a real sense of self-preservation. They'll flank you from all sides given the opportunity and they never do the same thing twice. And it all looks brilliant. The graphics are easily the best of a game this size, rivalled only by the likes of Killzone 3 and Crysis 2, but in a very open-world environment. The facial animation of the NPCs, while not quite to the standards of LA Noire, are incredibly life-like and convincing. The character models look great, too, just like everything else in the gameworld. There's quite a lot of RPG style looting and purchasing of weapons and upgrades, making gadgets from schematics and such like. The vehicle sections, used for getting around the world between missions and for race events, are actually huge fun and work very well indeed. You can trick-out your vehicles with new turbos, tyres, spike-wheels and projectiles as well as a fresh coat of paint to add a little personality. Sadly, you can't sell your old vehicles when you get a new one, which is an oversight in my opinion. If you die, theres a defibilator which you can choose to shock you back to life via a cool QTE minigame, which will also shock and stun any enemies stood over you. I did find the side quests unimpressive though, revisiting old areas and battling similar enemies seemed rather uninspired. Besides that though, the game rocks. Hard. I find it shocking that anyone could award this game with anything less than a 9, as its looks and gameplay come together brilliantly. Those giving it 1s ands 0s on here seem to have been playing on PC from what I read, but I think they're still being a little harsh, as the gameplay itself is worthy of far more than that, even without the great-looks of the great-looking 360 version. Fallout/Borderlands fans should enjoy this game for the setting, and FPS fans will love the game for the SHOOTING! Almost everything in the game is handled really well. The story is functional, if not amazingly ingrossing, and the environments are all stunning. The gunplay is fiirst rate and the enemy AI devilishly clever. Ignore the naysayer reviewers, they're just trying to be controversial. It's by no means perfect but it is damned good. The minigames and sidequests, along with the story are the games weakest link, but they're not why you'll buy RAGE. You'll come to RAGE for the shooting and you won't leave disapointed. Expand

RAGE is your standard issue FPS game with slight RPG elements to it. And in RAGE, slight means practically non-existent. Your choices don't impact on anything, they're if anything just flavour choices and barely alter the game and its story in any way at all. It's not immersive, it's not compelling, it just has elements that force you to spend time doing menial things like racing, yes racing. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but the title of this game is RAGE not RACE. Admittedly the racing plays only a small part in the game, but on the keyboard and mouse the controls are just horrible so I'd rather not even compete at all, but I'm forced to on several occasions. The whole game suffers from a horrible case of Consolitis, and it shows in almost every possible way. After playing for several hours, it became blatantly apparent that I had to ramp up the difficulty setting. Not a lot changed, enemies still got gibbed after one headshot (which isn't hard because they almost certainly stand completely still). Fights almost always only happen in a frontal cone, allowing for barely any movement and just to run and gun. Five hours in and I've never had to turn more than 30 degrees left or right during a mission to shoot enemies. They made the game like this so that the console players wouldn't stress having to flick around left and right. The Z-axis almost doesn't exist either, there are hardly any variations in vertical combat so it means that everything is either directly in front of you or slightly to your left or right. The AI is, for lack of a better word, stupid. They sit behind cover, only to expose their entire upper torso and skull to be easily shot. Technically this game falls short on so many areas, the FoV feels wrong if you modify it at all. From my understanding 80 is the default, so I guess it gets a bit of praise for that considering most console shooters lock you under 65. I play most FPS games on 110, but RAGE... I can't take it above 90 without getting huge graphical issues. The textures load at the edge of screen extremely slowly when spinning around quickly, you can see them rendering as you flick left to right. Again, I'm forced to modify game files outside of the game in order to increase/tweak the graphical settings. Did you simply forget to put these options in the game, ID and Bethesda? Or could you not be bothered? Rage is another example of what gaming has become. We're accepting our games as they are, poor console ports with no features. The only reason I give this game a single point is the fact that ID and Bethesda opted to leave the Developer Console in the game. Expand

It's baffling that a game that has been in development under the aegis of one of PC gaming's most respected developers could be quite so awful to look at, remain quite so unoptimised for modern PC rigs. Say: "There are many bugs, bad performance and graphic on basically any typical hardware configuration, but thats all the fault of hardware variety and driver bugs and not of the game or the engine, so it fine, lets ship it!"

So no reason for a better User Score, yet.

Then you get to John Goodman's voice as the first NPC you meet. Ok, fine...start your first mission...and even at the lowest setting, it stutters and locks up. From what I see--it's nowhere near as good as Fallout New Vegas (also from Bethesda) which runs incredibly well on my PC at high settings. They should've used the same engine (stubborn iD). Anyway, if you want enjoyable post-apocalyptic fun, go with Fallout. Will iD give me my money back (or Target) now that the product is registered?? Expand

For a game with so much hype it's lucky I gave it a 2 after all. I know many games come out now these days with bugs or issues but this one takes the cake & eat it too. Be it the game engine or drivers this must be one of the worst ever experiences with any game. Wish I would have knew better I would have gotten in on the consoles. Why pre-order when you can just wait till its in the bargain ben for next to nothing maybe then the headaches will be worth that price tag.

Textures are horrid, screen tearing is unbelievable, but heck if you don't move the game actually looks good too bad you have to move around to play the game, if you can play it at all.

As for specs I'm well off,.
    4GHz AMD 1100T
    2 XFX 6970
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
    8GB High Performance Ram

Surely i should be able to run & play this game.

The ending killed it for me. It was clearly supposed to be a 20-25 hour game but it got cut short.

Incredibly anti-climactic. Invisible walls everywhere to the point that it's almost like they don't want you to explore what I thought was supposed to be an open world. The shooting is fantastic, so are the enemies. It's the one thing they did right in the game and did very very well.

What can I say about the graphics.. it's an amazing engine with a terrible auto detect feature that we can't correct ourselves.

This game definitely was not supposed to come out for another year.

Technically awesome (if you know how to tweak some config file) but that's all. Weapons are boring, driving is boring, mission are boring. The game is boring, and short.

A graphical powerhouse, Rage is, so far, easily the most technically advanced video game thus far. The gameplay, both the shooting and the driving, is top notch. The enemy animation system makes surviving every encounter feel like a miracle. It's 15-20 hour length easily eclipses most shooters. The story, though a bit sparse, is competent, and never detracts from the game as a whole. TheA graphical powerhouse, Rage is, so far, easily the most technically advanced video game thus far. I don't know what game the critics were playing but it wasn't this one. I played the PC version and I won't comment on the bugginess factor that is already well documented. I tend to judge a game not just on how much I enjoy a play through, but on the dollar value. In my opinion $1 = 1 hour of play time. The game itself was mediocre fun, I didn't touch multiplayer just single player. The quests were pretty much the same thing different area and you always ended the level where you started so you could hop right into your vehicle and speed off. No memorable moments just a lot of running around with your favorite gun tried to avoid mutants. No real engaging characters/relationships... which is really an expectation these days. I did not enjoy the racing aspect of the game, and being left handed, I had issues mapping some keys which killed some of the joy... I do admit that I had to play the game sporadically because the texture popping gave me headaches. I finished the $60 game after 25 hours... you can do the math. Expand

Rage has to be the worst game of 2011, hands down. Possibly even the worst somewhat major game release in 5 years or more - and that's with the latest patch installed! The textures are so incredibly blurry, and I mean incredibly blurry, that they look like they belong in literally half life 1. The textures also have great big seams everywhere, including on characters - so besides being able to see perfectly well how everything is made out of polygon edges, you can also see perfectly well how badly glued together the blurry textures are on everything, even the faces of characters. The gameplay is highly linear (like everything else), the AI is stupid, the inventory and the items are meaningless, the story is non-existent... this is not even a tech demo. The entire game, tweaked to the max with patches and all is still not enough to entice anybody anywhere to play beyond the first two missions. This game deserves a 0 because of the above. Expand

Didn't work when I purchased it. Did work after installing AMD drivers update. Now doesn't work anymore following automated update by Steam I guess. A pretty, fast and aggressive shooter, striving in vain to be something more. [December 2011, p.62]

Far from perfect Rage somehow is has fun post-apocalyptic action where the principles are set –fortunately – bit different than in other games of FPS genre. [Nov 2011]

It seems id Software is still living in its golden days and failed to notice that times have changed since Doom and Quake. Rage is just a decent, linear, old school shooter combined awkwardly with an arcade racing game. The world is only 'kinda openish' and the story must have been written by the coders while they were compiling the alpha version. The game looks great though – if you're lucky enough to have the it run smoothly and without technical issues that haunt the PC version. [November 2011, p.46]
