I've got say that this is a hidden gem. It's been out for long enough now that the video issues are long since gone. It runs super smooth on my AMD system, which is great because it sure is a beautiful game

I bought it a while back on sale on Steam. I had other games to play and forgot about it. Came across it last week and after reading the mixed reviews decided to give it a go.

It's a great shooter and has a little of the open-world that I love. If I decide to follow the plot I can. If I want to do the side missions I can.

But let's be honest it's no Borderlands. There are tons of limitation on where you can go. The missions are very linear with very few regions for exploration. Thankfully they are usually short so you don't get too stuck following the same track.

There is tons of driving. I loved it, but felt like it was forced upon you too much. It can be a lot of fun shooting while driving, but there is a lot of it.

Don't get me wrong this is a great game and will provide hours of shoot-em up fun. But it does lack that sense of finish after playing other games. Hence the 8.

Grab it on sale if you can, it's a worthy addition to any game library. I've got a race to win now so I can get the parts I need.

It's a nice game when you are a casual gamer. It looks nice but its every time the same mission design.
For this price its ok, not more. Buy it if you want but its not a must have.

In a comparison of the three games Rage comes in as the third place contender for post-apocalyptic fun. WHY? Well three reasons really. (1) The explorable 'world' of Rage is too small. (2) The role playing elements of the game (leveling up, gaining skill increases and perks) don't exist. (3) The scenario and writing is too generic and lack-luster. This is slightly sad as the environmental art, level design and combat AI in this game are really great. Id Software got a lot of the elements right. However without exploration, an exciting plot or character building to motivate players the player base quickly declined and the game was forgotten. Id should have looked deeper at what motivates gamers to play games. A bigger world. A better story. More sense of forging your own identity with your character (aka role playing). Buy this game on sale and enjoy its overall excellence. For achievement hunters good luck getting four of a kind playing poker! The mini-games in Rage are TERRIBLY boring for poor suffering completionists.

Perhaps this is the reason why Rage wears the name "iD Software" so proudly, stating on the box art as being from the creators of Doom and Quake - and indeed, the game offers a very similar experience, with some modern twists, and the result is, at the very least, enjoyable.

The main story of Rage revolves around the player character, a survivor of an experiment by the U.S. government known as the Eden Project, designed to repopulate the Earth after a cataclysmic event which destroyed most of civilisation, awakening 106 years after being put in stasis, and being unwittingly dragged into a fight between the warring Authority, who are attempting to sieze control of the remaining settlements of Earth, and the Resistance, whose name should probably speak for themselves. This plot might be a bit bland, but Rage's fun lies not in its plot, but in its gameplay. The game certainly spares no expense with regards to action during its missions, which usually see you shooting large numbers of enemies with a large variety of weapons, which can be strategically used in tandem with each other. It's for this reason that, as stated before, I compare Rage favourably with games such as Doom and Quake, though equally favourable comparisons can also be made to Borderlands for its setting and Mad Max for the driving.

The game's certainly not grounded in the past, however - there are various features which drag the classic shooter into the age of modern gaming, such as a lives system of sorts implemented through a "defibrilator" mini-game, an open-world setting and and a vehicle mechanic, with the player unlocking better vehicles as they progress in the game. The driving in this game feels surprisingly fluid - It feels really satisfying to empty your Boost gauge whilst speeding through the game's deserted wastelands. The game also incorporates a vehicular combat system, though the weapons for this mode are not quite as diverse as thse for the main game, being limited to a mostly-ineffective Minigun, rockets, and a pulse weapon later on in the game.

Aside from the large variety of weapons available to the player in the game, each weapon also has various ammunition types, for instance an assault rifle has a standard round and a more powerful round, a shotgun has standard buckshot, an explosive "pop-rocket" round and a pulse round, and the game's Pistol has not only bulllets of increasing damage, but also Killbursts - the best description for which I can give comes from in-game: "Bullets within bullets within bullets, and they all fire at once." This gives the game slightly more diversity, making things a little more interesting by allowing players to switch between different ammo types on the fly to cater for different situations - Should I blast my way through with my ordinary Shotgun cartridges or do I blow them to pieces with my Pop Rockets?

There are some criticisms to be made - as I've said before, the story is quite bland and some of the open-world segments feel a bit forced, particularly the colonies which serve as a break-point of sorts between missions. Also, in spite of all the ammo types available, money is not easy enough to come by in the game world to actually be able to take advantage of all of them at once, requiring players to specialise at some point. Also quite annoying is the fact that there is no HUD when inside the game's aforementioned colonies, making it difficult to work out where it is you're meant to be going when some missions require you to visit a particular area within the colonies, necessitating wandering around aimlessly for a while trying to work out where the hell it is you're supposed to go. Perhaps one could also argue that some of the modernisations made to the game just seem arbitrary, from the plot to basic things like iron sights, which in some situations just aren't necessary.

All in all, the enjoyability of Rage depends on what you want from it. If you're looking for a deep story experience, then this is probably not the game for you. If, however, you enjoyed games the likes of Doom, Painkiller, Serious Sam and Duke Nukem 3D and are looking for a similar experience updated for a modern age, then Rage will be happy to provide you with a generous helping of over-the-top, rip-roaring action that will surely sustain one's appetite for death and destruction.

Gameplay is pretty fun though, sometimes grindy, but still overall pretty fun to play, would indeed recommend this title! :D

The premise of the game is pretty well set up. You survived an apocalyptic asteroid impact and emerge from your cocoon into a world radically changed by this event.

Now I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic fiction, so this review may come across as slightly biased.

The storyline in and of itself is fairly good, well written, with some memorable characters. But it's not by any means genre-defining.

The graphics are the main draw of RAGE. Featuring IDTech 5, it introduces a new rendering concept called "Megatexturing", in which instead of a multitude of textures comprising a game world, the world of RAGE is rendered with one massive texture over everything in the environment. An ambitious method, for sure.

However, this technique is still very new, so there are a lot of quirks in the game such as texture pop-in and a green tint in dark environments. Not to mention that in order for the game to be able to run decently on most consumer hardware, the textures had to be greatly compressed from their original state, and the effects do show sometimes.

One effect from this compression might be the aforementioned green tint, but also the textures in general may look fairly muddy and blurry, especially on consoles and lower-end hardware on PC.

As Megatextures use a new transcoding method to render objects, SLI and Crossfire are not supported. The game will not even recognize anything beyond one GPU. I'm fairly optimistic that ID Software will address this with future titles though (I can't comment on Wolfenstein: New Order, as I have yet to play it myself on my SLI computer).

    But I digress...

The gameplay itself is very solid and quite fun. ID Software is a master of the FPS genre, so as expected, the gunplay is extremely well presented and gives a visceral experience as enemies realistically react to localized damage.

The multiplayer, however, feels a tacked on. But I had a lot of fun with co-op.

I bought the game while it was on sale on Newegg back in late 2011, and I enjoyed the experience quite a bit.

If this is the consequence of this new engine then its not worth it just to have pretty looking textures for some of the game. 4)I have the worst screen tearing i have ever seen in my life (i have a very decent nvidia based rig and have not been able to get rid of it even with all the suggested fixes and patch). On the plus side i havent had any crashes or the texture pop-in others are having and it stays a nice 60 fps. Also the character models are nice, the textures at a distance can look look fantastic, the combat is fairly satisfying, and the driving is kinda Mario Kartish. The post release update (that also includes the missing graphics options) has made stuff worse for me and taken some of the crispiness out of the good looking textures. With all the technical issues its had at release, its really not what we should be accepting from a modern AAA title. Looking at the game as a whole package, its really below average in most respects apart from graphics, and not worth paying full price for, definately reccomend waiting for price drop. Expand

There was enough distinctive elements (the ability to carry every weapon, for instance) that was undeniably an Id Software game, yet it is stained by present-day conventions. The relatively drab color scheme doesn't bother me, Id has always been known for such and in the old days, that wasn't an issue. I'm not even bothered by the glaring graphical problems. The issue is, RAGE tried to be two things it shouldn't have been, and I don't have enough room in this box to go in-depth as to why. One, it tried to be a console game. Console games have too many limitations. Two, it tried to be "Borderlands with plot." Borderlands doesn't have a have a lot of plot because it's about fun, cooperative gameplay. At least the cars and guns were fun. Expand

Not bad, but not as good as I expected. The story is ok, but it's finished too suddenly, it could have been longer and explained better. As an example, for me it was very annoying at the start, that nobody explained or told anything about what happened with the world while the protagonist was in the ark.

Ok this game is no where near as bad as most people here suggest!....

The game is quite linear with the missions/quests all linking together which often necessitates they be completed in the correct order before a new one can be embarked upon... though this isnt a strict rule and some can be overlapped... most missions are pretty straight forward and on arrival at the mission destination often include another sub-mission which is initiated & required in order to complete the first!..this can be a bit irritating after a few missions..but not overly so..
The graphics on my system nvidia gtx 285, i7 @ 4.2 ghz are smooth and often look amazing with great attention being given to the set pieces in each location..some are a true work of art...Sadly this is slightly spoilt on the pc version with pretty dismal and often very low res textures complete with pop up laggy texture drawing when quickly viewing another area of the environment then another....the lack of V-sync was solved in my case using Nvidia inspector and forcing it on..
The game is a sort of cross between Fallout 3 and Borderlands.....but its neither....and in some ways fails at both levels in some areas and also succeeds for what it is........its a shooter at heart trying to employ rpg elements/missions etc to maintain interest and longevity...but its a strange union that makes you wish sometimes it was just a pure free form rpg like Fallout 3..especially since the graphics can at times look amazing....but sadly this is no Fallout 3 beater...and the world is often devoid of life nad activity..until you hit the next scripted event around the corner!

But I like the game, its easy playing..it has character...the driving elements and races are in some ways similar to a dumbed down motorstorm on the ps3...but later on with added guns and shields and drop-able bombs etc to spice it up!
Gameplay when gun fighting is quite satisfying also..with enemies AI offering enough of a challenge for most players on the harder levels....and weapons offering the usual upgrade paths and so so variety...
The main issues with the PC version of the game in my opinion are the low res consolized textures!...yes the scenery is amazing at times and the set pieces and structures are amongst the best i have ever seen on any game, it just seems so sad and weird that the graphic options in the menu are non-existent....come on..i know this is a console port but wtf....there are literally NO options apart from a basic resolution and AA... and the resultant graphical issues limitations are very obvious...am sure tehy could of been fixed before releasing the pc port!... As they stand at the moment they do not seriously distract from the games enjoyment but they certainly dont add to it either!...and there is NO excuse for such LOW RES TEXTURES!

This game with some polishing and a high res texture pack could look awesome!....as it stands it just looks great....its certainly better than the stupid cell shaded Borderlands crappy graphics that some seem to wet their knickers over!..

but its ok..its def worth playing .....am giving it a 7..maybe thats a bit generous.....but its certainly worth far more than the 0's and 1' some here are giving it!....does it live up to the hype and previews....well maybe not..but what game today does!...most are simplified dumbed down console games to pc ports with shallow game play, low res textures etc...it seems developing games for consoles is killing any real game play and holding back on any depth of game play and a lack of graphical need or willpower to develop real TRUE next gen games..so this game sadly falls into that same simplified box as all the other simplified cash for console ports! games like the latest call of juarez the cartel...or even Deus Ex - Human Revolution.they all share the same problem CONSOLES!.......it shows in the lack of vision and lack of REAL development commitment towards a deep satisfying game.....and the new console area also shows a lack of any real interest to programme for PC's anymore (programming old code for old consoles does not require as much effort as pushing the envelope for newer DX11 technologies and the immensely superior capabilities of modern PC's)......sadly with pc piracy at an all all time high and most console games a sure fire win win situation financially for commercial games investors/developers..its hard to see a way forward for future pc games....this is a huge slap in the face for PC owners when you consider this game was released prob with knowing graphical bugs/glitches.(unless all the pc beta testers were BLIND!)....this pretty well sums up all the attitude of the shallow console games developers and their shallow slap in the face couldnt give a real **** to pc owners and their crappy port-overs today....

It is a game that tried to be something much bigger than it is and at that it failed. It combines too much and those things don't feel as one complete game world.

I liked the care and details with which the levels were designed. Invisible barriers make you feel you play Doom 3 with some kind of glitch making walls invisible. In fact, one area is totally Doom 3-like - not even sure what all that blood and some alien outgrowth on the walls have to do with the Rage story.

Graphics quality leaves a mixed feeling due to very low resolution of close-ups - especially in darker areas. Other than that games looks very good and I do get great performanc eon 560TI. The weapons and the fight mechanics are very nice but some missions are too easy and boring. Story, is ok for a shooter but definetely lacks for an RPG. All the build/buy/sell activities feel boring and unnecessary. Driving is done pretty well but again, unnecessary. Minigames add pretty nice spice to the whole package and are done very well.

As far as bugs etc. I had no real issues with the game. However, I played it after the initial patches.

My biggest personal problem with it is the ending. Not to make this a spoiler, but for those who played the game - what was the purpose of BFG again?

I love the racing portions! It is kind of like pod racer on wheels. On the shooting side it gives you a somewhat engaging story with an "open world" environment. Rage will be a great new franchise for them. Thanks Carmack!

Then I got corrupted textures all over the place. Somewhat improved by tweaking the config files but never fully fixed.

Now I understand that this is probably caused by broken video card drivers more than by the game itself, and by the fact that this is virtually the only game that uses the newest OpenGL version, and that those issues will eventually be fixed, but knowingly releasing it in a virtually non-working state for the majority of ATi card users is just pathetic. Especially with id's reputation as one of the the leading technology companies.

Kind of shocked to see the amount of negative reviews this game has gotten. (Altho many 2011 reviews comment on bugs and crashes. I cant comment on the state of the game at launch but I can tell you that as of writing this review I played thru the game from start to finish at max settings @1600p and it played smooth without a single hitch on a high end rig). This is a decent FPS, its not ground breaking and given the pedigree of the team involved you may have understandably some high expectations. But while there are better FPS shooters out there, this (particularly at the cheap price it is these days) is still worth a go. Its actually a mixture of Motor Storm (a racing game if you didnt know) and a little Borderlandsish (enemies)! Its maps are especially large, which impressed me considering some of the beautiful detail. The AI isnt too bright, thankfully they are agile and have some randomness about them, but dont expect much trouble taking them down. The weapons are a bit of a let down, nothing feeling as good as it should - your melee attack is a force to be reckoned with, but a steel-tipped arrow directly hitting a naked head - apparently not that devastating :s I can see why some may have felt disappointed with this, especially if you bought it early and had the hype building. But as a game that can be found for under a fiver, its worth the money. Expand

OK so it's a lot like Borderlands. Yes, that may be true but what it doesn't share with Borderlands are the boring, repetitive missions, redundant and overly diverse weapons and lack of fun. Rage is a fun adventure FPS with driving elements that are reminiscent of Carmageddon and the Twisted Metal series. Rage succeeds in creating a credible environment with interesting characters (great voice-over work although your character doesn't speak) and an engaging storyline. Everything looks beautiful and runs smoothly. The store system is very simple and is great for the engineering aspect of the game. It does lacks any real upgrading abilities though in terms of the weapons. The biggest problems with the game are that it is too short and most missions are similar. The racing circuit is very easy aside from the latter races that can be a bit challenging but there isn't many of them in general. There were far too many closed doors and the enemies would regenerate right after the areas had been visited. The ending was WAY too easy especially with the BFG. I had no issues with full video settings. I did have some sound issues at times though. It's not a perfect game but it is a fun one with some great visuals and story. The gameplay is challenging and exciting. Overall it needed a bit more. Also, I have absolutely no idea why this game is called "Rage" when there is no actual raging. Weird. Expand

I'm just now getting around to playing RAGE on PC, and I gather it's a good thing I waited for both patches. I'm running on an old outdated Phenom II 3.4GHz quad-core, Nvidia GTX 460, resolution @ 1680x1050 and it's been smooth for the most part (using "smart" V-sync). My score will be higher than many simply because I didn't have to endure all the problems it had at launch. My score will be higher than many simply because I didn't have to endure all the problems it had at launch. I didn't expect some magnum opus regarding story considering this is iD, so I'm not that let down there. You'd think that after Doom 3 it would also be unrealistic to expect decent textures, but after the much touted "mega-texturing" feature, I was hoping not to see Playstation 2-like, 8-bit color stuff at the very least. For every (just) decent texture, there are dozens that look just plain horrible. Like some other developers of late, they seem to have forgone texture artists in favor of shader code. I suppose this is yet another result of the recession/depression we are still having to endure, thanks to the current administration. Rage is mindless fun, like all other iD shooters, and truly is quite a bit more fleshed out than any game they've made to date. However, I can't see many developers lining up to license this engine, as it doesn't bring anything new to the table that I can tell. This is problematic for iD, who has always depended more on engine licensing than sales of in-house developed titles. Expand

Excellent graphics and good weapons choices are strong points in this game. Story line is a bit routine, however. A pretty, fast and aggressive shooter, striving in vain to be something more. [December 2011, p.62]

Far from perfect Rage somehow is has fun post-apocalyptic action where the principles are set –fortunately – bit different than in other games of FPS genre. [Nov 2011]

It seems id Software is still living in its golden days and failed to notice that times have changed since Doom and Quake. Rage is just a decent, linear, old school shooter combined awkwardly with an arcade racing game. The world is only 'kinda openish' and the story must have been written by the coders while they were compiling the alpha version. The game looks great though – if you're lucky enough to have the it run smoothly and without technical issues that haunt the PC version. [November 2011, p.46]
